THE Nor thern Mindanao Region (NMR) 1 of the Philippine Eagles (Fraternal Order of Eagles) celebrated the Philippine Eagles Week from June 15 to 22.

It can be recalled that then President Fidel Ramos issued Proclamation No. 600 instituting the said dates as Philippine Eagles Week, citing the group’s civic and social endeavor

for community development and nation building.

The Philippine Eagles foundation day as the first Philippine-born civic fraternal organization was June 22, 1979.

Here in Nor thern Mindanao Region (NMR) 1, Gov. Anjun Gomez lined up several activities such as billiards, basketball, chess and dar t.

avier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, Mindanao’s first university, celebrated the 119th Philippine Independence Day as a commemoration of the country’s triumph for freedom and a recollection of its value amid the crisis of terrorism and the consequential declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

SM Malls in Mindanao join hands in Brigada Eskwela All four SM Supermalls in Mindanao joined hands with the Deparment of Education to help rehabilitate public schools in the island.

Guided by the 2017 theme Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan, Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan, SM Supermalls recognized its role as a catalyst for development in the immediate communities it serves.

Over a hundred employees from different SM Malls volunteered in Brigada Eskwela, the 14-yearold program of DepEd that aims to improve the learning condition and environment for students for the school year. Brigada Eskwela ran from May 15 to 19 and will recur throughout the year as Brigada Eskwela Plus to ensure continuous community participation In Davao City, 20

SM Lanang Premier volunteers helped clean and repaint classrooms in Lapu-Lapu Elementary school, while 30 SM City Davao volunteers did the same to classrooms in Kabacan Elementary School.

The same bayanihan spirit brought 28 volunteers from SM City General Santos to Jose Lansang Elementary School where they helped with minor repairs of school buildings.

Dozens of employees from SM City Cagayan de Oro also joined the Brigada activities in full force at the SM and BDO donated onestorey four classroom school building in Lumbia Elementary School to clean up and refurbish furniture and fixtures.

The collaborative efforts demonstrated by private sectors in activities like this pave a bright future for Philippine education.

Within the university gymnasium, Xavier Ateneo students, along with the faculty and administrators, waved the country’s flag as the hymns of Francisco Santiago and Ildefonso Santos’s Pilipinas Kong Mahal and George Canseco’s Ako ay Pilipino resonated in musical performances.

Wary of Martial Law Succeeding the raising of the flag and the 21-gun salute led by Reserved Officers in Training Corps, XU president Fr. Roberto C. Yap SJ commenced the program by reading the Statement of Five Ateneo Presidents on the Marawi Situation and the Declaration of Martial Law along with his speech.

“The undersigned wholeheartedly support the members of the Armed Forces and the police who give their last full measure of devotion so that our country may be safe,” Yap remarked.

While this nod is given by leaders of the Ateneo community, they also reiterated the reasons for civilians to be more vigilant and cautious of martial rule.

“We have more than a decade of reasons to be wary of Martial Law,” Yap continued. But despite the notoriety of the era when the country was under a similar rule, the said statement didn’t fail to explain why the terrorism that displaced thousands of civilians in Marawi City from their homes prompted President Duterte towards its declaration.

Shared responsibility For Senior High School Media and Information Literacy (MIL) instructor Jay Rhen Galagnara, the freedom to post on social media may have its costs.

To practice freedom is also to be considerate of the responsibility that comes with it.

“As an MIL instructor,” he said, “I teach my students to practice [their] freedom of expression and speech by being responsible for what they post online.”

Galagnara further discourages his students to spread fake news which may trigger aggression and the perpetuation of false information, but encourages them to use media to sharpen their knowledge on local, national, and global issues.

Freedom, however, can still be protected as the statement highlighted the current Constitution’s safeguards to curb the abuse of power and the call for those in authority to respect and follow them.

“We trust our President when he tells us that martial rule shall only be limited and temporary,” Yap said before concluding with the call for the community to pray for peace and justice in Marawi and Mindanao.

Nationalistic commitment In a juncture, students were encouraged to tie ribbons on the bare and intertwining branches of decorative trees as the music continued to resound throughout the

Tying ribbons each representing the colors of the Philippine flag, the act is an artistic symbol of the commitment to nationalism according to Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) director Hobart Savior.

“It is also a symbol of patriotism for the attainment of peace,” said Savior, who also directed the event.

Terrorism, Savior reckoned, can be combated through artistic means. “I think we have the responsibility to mirror and hammer our understanding and consciousness for our own people and land, of our own context and situation.”

DOE Leads Forum On Energy Efficiency For Consumer Products

T

he Department of Energy (DOE) recently held the second of a series of public consultations aimed at developing a national energy efficiency standard for household appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and lighting products like LED lamps.

Holding the dialogue in partnership with the European Union, the DOE led other government agencies such as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and private sector representatives in culling inputs from

experts, resource persons and the general public.

The collective inputs would be used to improve the proposed Particular Product Requirements (PPRs) that would help consumers choose wisely in buying household items that are energy efficient.

Once finalized, the PPRs will form part of the Implementing Guidelines for the DOE’s Philippine Energy Standards and Labeling Program (PESLP).

Through the product standards, consumers will be better informed on the energy

consumption and efficiency levels of specified consumer goods.

Director Amelia de Guzman of the DOE’s Energy Research and Testing Laboratory Services stressed the importance of involving consumers and civil society in the deliberations in order to get the practical viewpoints of the end-users.

She explained that the PESLP not only benefits consumers by reducing their energy bills but will also help in significantly reducing carbon emissions that contribute to mitigating

climate change.

In his opening remarks, Program Manager for Energy of the EU Delegation in the Philippines Willy Hick said, “The EU has been supporting the Philippine government through the years in reaching its energy efficiency and poverty reduction targets.”

The EU has allocated 60M Euros or PHP3.3 B in support of the Philippine government’s 100%-electrification target by 2022.

“European funding can never work without a strong partner,” Hick said during

the Philippines’ and EU’s Access to Sustainable Energy Program (ASEP) Meet.

Aside from efficiency, the ASEP also advocates clean energy by providing grants to boost rural household electrification using clean energy sources.

The first public consultation was held last 24 May. Apart from the consumer products mentioned during the first two conferences, the PESLP will also cover television sets, washing machines and even passenger and commercial vehicles.

More than 250 kindergarten teachers from the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Cagayan de Oro City were introduced to the wealth of resources available on the American English (AE) website in a seminar-workshop.

Through the Arrupe Educational Center (formerly Regional Center for Expertise – Northern Mindanao) of the School of Education of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, the seminarworkshop, held on May 30 and 31 at the Pilgrim Christian College Auditorium, formed part of DepEd’s efforts to ensure a successful

implementation of the Kindergarten Education program.

Schools division superintendent Dr. Elena M. Borcillo serves as the overall committee chairperson and PSDSKinder coordinator Anita M. Gochuco acts as technical planning committee chairperson of the Kindergarten Education program.

“Arrupe Educational Center aims to promote quality education by providing relevant training programs to the pre-service and inservice teachers. [We] support the aspiration for DepEd to ensure that every child has the best start in school. The kindergarten teachers

pave the way for young learners to possess the love for learning,” said AEC director Ma. Victoria Trinidad.

“The key is to lead the teachers to tools and ways that will capture the needs and interests of the child.

This school year, with the use of AE tools, I am looking forward to kindergarten classes having high teacherand-learner engagement and eventually result to readiness for Grade 1. I wish to thank the AE team, US EmbassyManila, and the Local School Board, our partners in this training,” she added.

50 IPs Complete Indigenous Crafts Livelihood Skills Training

ome 50 Matigsalug trainees recently completed a series of skills training conducted

by AboitizPower subsidiary Therma South, Inc. (TSI) and the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., together with the Department of Trade and Industry – Region XI (DTI-XI).

The trainings, which are part of the ongoing comprehensive crafts livelihood project spearheaded by TSI, DTI and the Aboitiz Foundation, aims to capacitate a group of local residents in producing value-added

products out of their traditional baskets, fashion accessories, and wearables. Members of the Davao Designers Pool of DTI-XI were tapped during the product development process, as well as during the conduct of the trainings.

I really amired her and didn’t care to travel hundreds of miles to her house located in the former East Germany just to spend a few hours there. Salt on earth: Many things can be like that. Not only during mass service in the church. Not only by preaching. Also these touching hands of my distressed friend, listening to my lonely neighbour; remembering someone and writing him or her a letter or an email. I join others by helping, working, laughing, playing, singing. I listen to love’s melody.

Salt of the earth: Christian life doesn’t always mean possessions or property.

Before the refrigerator was invented, salt was a miracle of daily life. Salt made foodstuff keep well. So, let’s think about it: if we are part of earth’s salt, who are we? Do we bring rottenness or do we preserve and keep well our surroundings?

We should be salt on earth as in cleaning, helping and healing, but not salt, that brings caustic, corroding and mordant poison in other’s life.

Following the certifications issued by leading global laboratories which rated Petron’s Blaze 100 Euro 6 as surpassing the most stringent fuel technology and emission benchmark in the world, the Philippines’ most advanced gasoline was field tested in a marathon performance run across the length of Luzon.

With Honda as the official vehicle partner, test teams were deployed in two driving modes— hypermiling mode to test fuel efficiency, and normal mode to test the overall driving

experience. The six-day run saw the test teams driving up to Ilocos Norte and then all the way down to Sorsogon, before turning back to return to Metro Manila.

However, this run proved that having a highperformance fuel has its benefits—in our case, fuel economy—when used properly. Another factor is that Blaze is 100% gasoline, so we had additional energy

President Duterte lead distribution of food assistance to Marawi IDPs Iligan City --President Rodrigo Duterte will lead the distribution of the P1,000 cash as food assistance to families living in the evacuation centers here tomorrow.

The beneficiaries are those validated internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Marawi City as of June 15.

DSWD Field Office 10 Regional Director Nestor Briones Ramos said that amount can be used by Muslim IDPs to purchase more suitable food when they break their fast on the eve of June 26, the end of Ramadan.

Iligan City has 815 validated IDP families living inside the five

evacuation camps: Maria Cristina (220), Buruun Gymnasium (55), Sta. Elena Gymnasium (244), National School of Fisheries in Buruun (174), and Tibanga Gymnasium (122).

Ramos assured that all validated homebased IDP families here and in the evacuation centers and homebased in Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, and Misamis Occidental will also receive the food assistance in the coming days.

As of this writing, DSWD has served 24,529 families.

There are currently 38 evacuation centers housing 2,436 families.

The number of homebased families remains at 22,093.

For the whole province of Lanao del Norte including Iligan City, the total number of IDP families is 21,508. The number of families inside evacuation centers including Iligan City totaled to 2,433 with 11,058 individuals.

For Iligan City alone, the total number of IDP families remains at 9,231.

There are 798 families sheltered in evacuation centers, while the number of home-based families has remained at 8,433.

In Misamis Oriental, the number of IDP families remains

at 2,583, three families of which are staying in the lone evacuation Center in Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City.

In Bukidnon, the number of IDP families has increased to 343 families or 1, 703 individuals who are all home-based or staying with their relatives in the municipalities of Kalilangan, Valencia, Lantapan, Pangantucan and Malaybalay.

Total cost of assistance extended to IDPs amounted to P 43,713,857.00 of which P41,846,414 has been extended by DSWD. Breakdown of Cost assistance is P 27,475,807.00 for food and P 14,370,607.00 for non-food assistance.

by Dr. Klaus Maertens, who created a unique air-cushioned sole to aid his recovery from a broken foot. Using a salvaged cobbler’s last and a needle, Maertens made a prototype shoe and showed it to an old university friend and mechanical engineer, Dr. Herbert Funk.

The two went into partnership by using disused military supplies to begin producing their unique shoes. By 1947 they began formal production and within a decade had a booming business, mostly selling to older women. In 1959, they decided it was time to advertise their revolutionary footwear invention in overseas magazines The Griggs company in England acquired an exclusive license to manufacture the boots branded as ‘Airwair’ which came complete with a black and yellow heel loop featuring the brand name and the slogan “With Bouncing Soles” (based on Bill Grigg’s own handwriting). Taking its name from date of its inception, April 1st, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot had arrived.

The 1960s – the decade in which the Dr. Martens boot was born – saw an unprecedented wave of change, new ideas, cultural upheaval and eventually social revolution. This radical atmosphere also witnessed extravagant and often exotic fashion, an odd backdrop for the birth of such a functional work-boot, but then Dr. Martens has always kicked against the norm.

Initially worn by postmen and factory workers, Dr. Martens’ first few years of existence was very much that of a £2 workwear boot, selling solid quantities to Britain’s working classes. Then something incredible started to happen..

Without any warning or intent, Dr. Martens were suddenly picked up by early multi-cultural, ska-loving skinheads – who proudly championed British working class style. Shortly after, Pete Townshend of The Who became the first high profile individual to wear them as a symbol of his own working class pride and rebellious attitude.

In so doing, both first generation skinheads and Townshend altered the course of the brand’s history, changing this functional work-wear boot into a subcultural essential.

The decade of glam, punk, Two Tone and early goth saw British youth culture mushroom into countless distinct tribes.

Each successive new tribe who adopted the boot subverted the style of the previous wearers – yet large sections of the anti-establishment underground continually championed Dr. Martens.

By the end of the decade the boot had become a fierce symbol of selfexpression at the very heart of British youth culture.

With Britain plagued by anti-government riots and social resentment, youth culture rose up from the streets with yet more highly visual and individual tribes such as psychobilly, grebo and scooter boys.

Its history became closely linked to British youth cultures and their

preferred musical genres such as the Mods (jazz, ska, reggae), Hippies (Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix), Punks (Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones), Skinheads (reggae, ska, R&B, punk), and Grunge (Nirvana).

Grunge turned the mainstream music world on its head and took Dr. Martens along for the ride. Back in Britain, Britpop rebelled against this so-called ‘loser kid’ apathy but did so in the same boots, the 1460.

The emergence of numetal and very early emo saw yet more new music genres adopt the boot.

The brand also became synonymous with festival culture.

Shortly after the brand’s fortieth birthday, sales declined so dramatically that all but one of the UK factories had to be closed to stave off bankruptcy. Then in 2003 the revitalization of the famous brand began with high fashion designers from around the globe re-interpreting and customizing the classic 1460 boot.

In 2007 the resurgence continued when the original Cobbs Lane factory in Northampton factory resumed making hand-made Dr. Martens Originals.

In the era of the global village and social media, every aspect of youth culture and subcultural style has changed. Yet diverse individuals, fans and subcultures still champion Dr. Martens, attracted by its unique alternative appeal and authenticity in a world of homogeny.

In 2010 a revitalized Dr. Martens celebrated its 50th anniversary: five decades that have witnessed the brand’s adoption by a

diverse range of tribes, celebrities, musicians and free-thinking individuals – each subverting and twisting the boots and shoes to their own personal needs, attitudes and identity.

Without music, Dr Martens would have remained a work wear boot. The music of tribes who wear Dr. Martens has become inseparable from the brand itself.

The American English website is a resource center for teaching and learning about American English language and culture. The website provides a variety of engaging materials and resources for teachers’ professional development and for students in the classroom.

Different activity games and materials that they can download and use such as “Activate Game” boards, “Guess What?” e-cards, “Word Bricks,” and “Picture This” e-cards were also presented to teachers.

They were also introduced to “Sing Out Loud Children’s Songs” album and references like “Create to Communicate” that contains activities and lessons that use art to foster English language development.

“Integrating the pedagogy of play using the American English materials, kindergarten teachers designed these work periods with the ‘fun factor’ in mind.

The set of activities is contextualized and student-centered promoting better retention and fun learning experiences in the kindergarten classrooms,” shared Genon from MSU-IIT. Workshop participants in the second day grouped themselves to come up with activities and materials adapted from the AE website resources.

Miss Philippines Earth 2017 candidates tour Misor Story by MARK FRANCISCO

IXTEEN of the 40 candidates for Miss Philippines Earth 2017 toured Misamis Oriental for three days from June 19 to 21 through the invitation of Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano.

The candidates were able to tour Agutayan Island, the sailfin lizard park and Sagpulon Falls last Tuesday.

Emano said these are the top three tourist spots in the province.

In the afternoon, the candidates held a fashion show courtesy of Mags at Centrio in Cagayan de Oro City.

Emano said he is proud to tour the ladies to different tourism destinations in Misamis Oriental to discover “the secrets and beauties

embedded in this glorious province.�
