Business As Usual as Cagayan de Oro celebrates 3rd Himugso Festival

agayan de Oro celebrates its 3rd HIMUGSO Festival this month with the tagline “Business As Usual Cagayan de Oro”.

During the City Tourism Council’s special meeting held June 8 at the new Hugo Skye Lounge in Barangay Indahag, the adverse effects of the ongoing conflict in Marawi City and the subsequent declaration of martial law in Mindanao were discussed.

To counter the negative perception about the city’s safety and security, the CTC is organizing a multi-sectoral task force to launch a multi-media, multi-platform public re-

lations initiative dubbed #BusinessAsUsualCagayanDeOro.” The CTC aims to use the 3rd HIMUGSO Festival to launch the campaign by asking stakeholders in the city to carry the tagline/ hashtag in all their ads, events and social media campaign and posts.

NMR4 Governor Nelson Alonto-Sarapuddin inducts 18 new members of the Metro Cagayan Eagles Club.

THE Metro Cagayan Eagles Club led by president Michael Joe Montecillo celebrated its sixth anniversary last Saturday with a Mass, motorcade, tree caring (of the trees planted two years ago) and a fellowship.

During the fellowship held at Grand Caprice in Cagayan de Oro City, NMR4 Governor Nelson AlontoSarapuddin inducted 18 new members of Metro Cagayan Eagles Club.

In his talk, Sarapuddin said that “Metro Cagayan Eagles

Club has already reached the pinnacle towards success. And yet we continue to soar high.”

According to Montecillo, Metro Cagayan Eagles Club currently has more than 100 active members. It was chartered in 2011 with Sarapuddin himself as charter president before he was catapulted into his post as charter governor in 2016.

Chez Marie opens SM CDO Downtown Premier branch June 12-18, 2017

CHEZ Marie Bar Café and Restaurant, the startup which became a stunning overnight success after it opened its doors in December 2014, decided to open its third branch at the newest shopping mall in the city, SM CDO Downtown Premier. And so the new Chez Marie branch at SM CDO Downtown Premier was blessed and inaugurated much to the delight of the people living nearby.

Of course, there are lots of new dishes that Chez Marie is offering at its third branch. Gambas and crispy knuckles are expected to be their bestsellers.

Chez Marie started as a hobby.

Proprietor Maribel Gargar used to intently view and observe the late German Moreno’s recipes in the defunct show Negosiyete. Long to be a fan of French cuisine, Gargar then infused what she had learned

from the TV show and developed French-inspired recipes. And so Chez Marie was born. (Chez means “come” in French, the whole name would loosely translate “come to Marie”, alluding to Gargar’s first name.)

Chez Marie’s flagship dish is their black mamba pizza, the only pizza served in Cagayan de Oro which has a black-colored crust.

Their other favorites would be Steak Au Poivre, Greek braised pork, chicken and beef quesadillas, oxtail stew, herb-roasted chicken, seafood pasta rollups, fettuccini ala king, olio pasta, among many others.

They also have a wide range of desserts including banana and almond crepe, chocolate fondue cheesecake and blueberry cheesecake. Their signature drink is a juice that is something for your taste buds to look forward to.

BRIDGES 1982, I visited Davao City for the first time in my life. I learned about the awesome project of a bridge from Davao City to Samal Island. I can’t see this bridge till today.

It matters not if our skin is black or white, if we are rich or or poor, man or woman, being sad or happy.

So obvious our daily life is that we might even forget simple things easily.

Self-esteem, respect and freedom rom anxiety are the necessary and conclusive foundations for this kind of bridge.

Small but important bridges every daily - how easily are they to be built: gestures of love - like a medicine; a handshake together with commendation and praise, encouraging words, a warm smile, instead of a superficial “How are you?” and the expected “Fine” or “OKAY LANG!”.

Allow me to say it clearly and direct to the point: Separations result from

F

orty years after I first came to Tagaytay as a fresh graduate taking a break from his training in Escolta, Manila, for his first job, I was back last May 29 and I was happy to discover the everyday’s-a-weekend vibe of the change hasn’t changed much.

Of course much can happen in four decades and indeed at the ridge where my friend’s house used to stand is now chock full of restaurants, inns, roadside stands selling the ubiquitous pineapple, furniture and woodworking shops and here and there high rise buildings are beginning to dot the landscape.

Best of all for me, the laid back ambience of the city remains, although perhaps it’s not advisable to come down here on a weekend when I’m told

most of the people from Metro Manila who are nearer to it come down in droves to enjoy the balmy climate and small town charm of Tagaytay, its attractions and its people.

After spending Sunday at Summit Hotel Magnolia at New Manila, Quezon City, off we went to our next stop for Summit Ridge Tagaytay.

Since it’s quite a long drive from Quezon City, we dropped by Tito Chef Restaurant and All Things Culinary at Sucat, Parañaque City for lunch. Quite an experience meeting Chef Amadeo “Menoy” Gimenez, who treated us to a virtual Chef ’s Table by walking us through an excellent lunch and a lightning tour of his culinary school, P.A.C.E. But that’s another late that deserves its own story later.

After another hour’s drive through the picturesque countryside replete with Tagaytay’s furniture and wood workshops, and the ubiquitous pineapple fields and roadside stands, we finally to Summit Ridge Tagaytay where we got a warm Tagaytay welcome from Hotel Manager Cristy Alcantara, who immediately made us feel at home by talking to us is Bisaya, she hailing from Surigao del Sur. Cebu Pacific boosts flights to Cebu, Davao, and Hong Kong with 59% more seats June 12-18, 2017

Brand-new planes brings total CEB fleet to 61 aircraft

T

he Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) increases the frequency and capacity of its flights to Cebu, Davao, and Hong Kong, upgrading the aircraft from an Airbus A320 to an A330. The increase in frequencies comes as CEB added two brandnew aircraft into its fleet.

Starting July 4, 2017, CEB will be increasing frequency of its ManilaHong Kong route by 50%, resulting in thrice-a-day flights, or a total of 21 flights a week, from the current twice-a-day. CEB will also use the A330s to fly between Manila and Cebu three-times daily, or 21 times a week; while the Davao hub will get a boost with two additional daily flights to and from Manila, bringing frequency to four times daily, or 28 weekly flights. The upgrade from a 180-seater A320

to a 436-seater A330 makes available an additional 256 seats for each flight, or 59% more capacity.

“More seats and more flights in high-demand destinations will help lower fares for everyJuan.

Moreover, using larger aircraft will make flying more efficient, freeing-up some aircraft and slots at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

This will also enable us to increase capacity and frequency for other routes moving forward,” said Atty JR Mantaring, Cebu Pacific Vice President for Corporate Affairs.

The brand-new ATR 72-600 aircraft, on the other hand, will form part of the existing ATR fleet of wholly-owned subsidiary Cebgo. The latter recently announced five new domestic routes set to start operations in July, namely: Cebu to Masbate, Cagayan

GSIS extends college scholarship application until June 23

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is currently accepting applications for its enhanced GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP) for Academic Year 2017-2018. The deadline for submission of application is extended until June 23, 2017.

This year, GSIS is offering a total of 400 scholarship slots to children or dependents of active members and permanent total disability (PTD) pensioners with the lowest annual basic salary. Of the 400 slots, 40 or 10 percent are allotted for dependents of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo or single parents.

Active members may nominate their children or dependents if they are permanent government employees, have at least three-year government service, have a salary grade of 24 or below (or its equivalent job level), and have paid premium contributions for the last six months.

I believe the garden setting of this establishment is the inspiration for many others like it around the Philippines although the Tagaytay original breathes a unique, homey ambience unlike similar restaurants I’ve been to.
