UCCP Invites public to free lecture on State of the PH Environment 2016 The Cagayan de Oro City Church of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines invites the general public to a free lecture on “The State of the Philippine Environment, 2016” by Dr. Ben S. Malayang lll, President of Silliman University, on Saturday, June 18 at 2:00-4:00 in the afternoon at the UCCP Cagayan de Oro City Church Sanctuary.

The lecture, with the

theme “Stewardship of God’s Creation”, will be a general survey of the environmental security threats and issues in the Philippines as these are linked to localto-global scales of the threats and issues. It offers opportunities for discussion on the challenges of these environmental threats and issues to Filipinos living a faith in God. The lecture series is

one of the core events of the year-long celebration of the centennial of CDO-UCCP. It may be recalled that in March this year, we had the first of the lecture series with Dr. Victor R. Aguilan who talked on the church history. Dr. Aguilan is a professor in church history of the SU Divinity School.

SM employees adopt schools, support brigada eskwela June 11-17, 2016

On June 4, 2016, SM employees across Mindanao region came out in full force to participate in “Adopt-a-School,” an Employee Volunteerism Program (EVP) aimed at benefiting public elementar y schools. The said activity was held in support of the Department of Education’s Brigada Esk wela, which ensures that school facilities are ready for the opening of classes.

Sharing their time, efforts and resources, volunteers from SM City General Santos, SM City Davao, SM Lanang Premier, and SM City Cagayan de Oro spearheaded a simultaneous clean-up, maintenance and repair work of their respective school beneficiaries.

In SM City

General Santos, volunteer employees repainted some of the classrooms and the stage of Balite Elementar y School. They also donated cleaning materials and first aid kits for the students and teachers. Balite Elementar y School has produced a Valedictorian graduate of batch 1999, Rose Fatima Manlangit, who is now working as a Building Administration Officer of SM City GenSan. “I am privileged to have been given a chance to go back here and ser ve my Alma Mater. I am also proud that I am an employee of SM that shows more concern to the community through this kind of activity,” notes Rose Fatima Manlangit.

of both SM City Davao and SM Lanang Premier conducted their respective “Adopt-a-School” initiatives.

SM City Davao adopted Kabacan Elementar y School, which is near the mall. Volunteer mall employees, SM Foundation scholars as well as the SM Security Force cleaned up classrooms, repaired armchairs and did some carpentr y works. SM also rehabilitated the school librar y making it more conducive to learning. Kabacan Elementar y School is expected to cater to some 2,0 0 0 students.

In the past, the school has also received benches as well as reference books from SM City Davao.

Lanang Premier, together with SM Security Force, reached out to the neighboring Ubalde Elementar y School. Apart from cleaning and beautifying the school grounds and façade, they made a longstanding contribution by turning over newly built bookshelves to the school librar y. SM Lanang Premier also previously donated electric fans and educational textbooks to Ubalde Elementar y School, which has a population of around 80 0 students.

In the same way, SM City Cagayan de Oro employees, together with SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc., Security Agency and Engineering Agency personnel, carried out their “Adopt-a-School” activity at Lumbia

They improved the comfort and convenience of the classrooms through general cleaning and repairing of broken ceilings, doors, and lights and plumbing works in the restrooms.

The “Adopt-

a-School” activity is under SM Supermalls’ Employee Volunteerism Program, which encourages employees to give back to the community and the less privileged sectors of the society.

North Meets North: SM City Baguio hosts Pasundayag sa Northern Mindanao 2016 E June 11-17, 2016

The Department of Tourism Region 10 conducted a grand promotional activity in support to the initiatives of the private sector to strengthen the unity of diverse cultures in the country.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan gave an inspiring message that warmed the hearts of everyone as evidence of his support to the tourism industry.

Let Your Kids Watch Walt Disney Movies June 11-17, 2016

Walt Disney has played a big part in my life. Ever since I was a little girl and up until now, I love watching most of their movies.

I also love going to Disneyland theme parks because it’s such a happy place. Let me tell you why I love watching Disney movies…

Beauty and The Beast taught me to dream, that fairytales could come true and there’s so much more to the provincial life.

It also taught me not to judge people with their looks because beauty comes from within.

Cinderella taught me the importance of courage and

kindness.

Ariel from The Little Mermaid made me realize that with love, anything is possible.

And, that you can be a part of any World where you feel that your heart belongs.

Aladdin taught me to be honest with who you are and to be yourself. No matter what your past may be, you can still be great someday as long as you believe.

Pocahontas taught me that even with different cultures, with love, anything is possible.

The Lion King taught this to be true… That the past can hurt but it’s either you run from it or learn from it. And of course, Hakuna Matata - It means no worries for the rest of your days.

Those are just a few of my favorite Walt Disney movies back then. But, they just keep on getting better and better on making movies and inspiring not only children but also us adults.

The more recent ones are Ratatouille… One of best movies ever… So many great quotes like, “Only the fearless can be great.” “If you focus on what you have left behind, you will never be able to see what lies ahead.”

“You must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul.”

Frozen made me realize that only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart. Also, to just let go of our worries and fears and

Those are just some of my favorites! I believe that we should start letting our children watch inspiring movies because movies like these teach them to never stop believing, to never let negative comments bother us, that all our dreams could come true, to be yourself and to never give up when going through hard times because even our trials lead us to our destiny.

Walt Disney is such a genius and I’m a big fan! For someone who got fired from his job because of lack of creativity.

Hmmmm… Here are some of

his best quotes ever! “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” “Laughter is timeless, Imagination has no age and Dreams are forever.” “Around here we don’t look backwards for very long, we keep moving forward opening up new doors and doing new things because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

Whenever I feel down and I feel like I need something to inspire me, I watch my favorite Walt Disney movies, they really change my mood and shift me back to the positive side of life.

Never trust someone above 30?

Above 30? Above 40?

I really don’t know Born in 1953, I started my life at a period, when more babies have been entering the German population than never before. World War II, more or less, the end of the world (!) - as my late grandmother mostly describes that time - has ended eight years ago. It was not the end of everything.

Really not! The world economic crises changed into another economical world wonder.

During the Sixties, we looked upon the youth culture of Woodstock as a symbol - of the power of music, the pursuit of self expression, the values of peace, love and community, and the rejection of “the establishment” even in the midst of torrential rain and an aftermath of footdeep mud.

generation with long hair. Yes, I confess, many times I was really very cynical about my parent’s values, and rejected anything that suggested tradition.

Please explain: what is the meaning of tradition?

By the way, that’s one thing, which can be observed also in the Philippines since a couple of years. I observed such changes since my first visit in the Philippines in 1976.

The slogan “Never trust someone above 30” had to be abandoned since I crossed that divide myself. Now, hopefully at the second half of my present life “40” looks impossible young.

And let’s be honest to ourselves: Are we not facing the same realities our parents did: Raising families, needs to pay for school et cetera, et cetera? We

have held fiercely to freethinking and the untraditional ways our parents - shaped by the “Depression”, World War II and much more - never had the luxury to feel.

Those of us who have made good money hold fewer illusions that a big house and a Mercedes (or any other brand!) in the garage are likely to bring happiness. But guys, what seems most precious to us nowadays is not career or success, but time and the freedom to do the things we love to do that hold meaning. Earnings through a job we don’t like might be painful; but isn’t it much more painful to wait for nothing while being fed by a friend?
