Story and Photos by MARK FRANCISCO,Lifestyle Editor

T

HE Misamis Oriental FilipinoChinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MOFCCCI) broke ground last Saturday the refurbishment of

the kitchen and dining hall of Mother Theresa Foundation, Inc. located at Upper Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City. With 76 kids under its care, the Mother Theresa

Foundation, Inc. home for the homeless kids has been around since 1997 under the inception of Norma Noble. Mirroring that of the organization founded

by Mother Theresa, the foundation provides street children in Cagayan de Oro with a safe sanctuary, resocializing them such that they acquire positive spiritual, moral and

Cagayanon is overall female champ in Challenge Camsur 2015 Story by MARK FRANCISCO, Lifestyle Editor

IT’s hard to tell that this ace triathlete is a mere government employee who has never been a sports star in her high school college days. But as Challenge Camsur 2015 Women Elite Category champion Lezette Albarote would put it, excelling in triathlons comes with age. Triathlon is a multiple stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential

endurance disciplines – swimming, cycling and running. And nowhere in the Philippines does triathlon comes close to prestige except any of the Challenge Philippines series, which is part of the Challenge Family worldwide. Challenge Family is changing the face of long distance racing around the world, featuring spectacular courses in iconic destinations, delivering the race of a lifetime to athletes of all ages

Along this line, Noble said they are hoping that all the kids under their care from seven to 17 will graduate through college. They are also appealing

to the public for kind assistance in the form of clothing, shoes, toiletries, beddings, pillows, blankets, floor wax, door jambs, rice, paint, maintenance tools, tables, chairs, plates, cutlery, stove and gas. They are also calling for kind donors to pledge and sponsor the education of one child at Mother Theresa Foundation. Meanwhile, MOFCCCI under the able leadership of president Greg Marten Lao and incoming president Adelfa Sia has slated more charitable activities for the year.

The Night Stalker:

Boy Zugba re-invents Bisdak Cuisine with a twist Okay, so there’s a new Filipino Restaurant in town, what has it got to offer that’s not already in the hundred other restos of all size and genres found in Cagayan de Oro? Plenty. Though not that new, Boy Zugba is already making waves at its location along Corrales Avenue-Ramon Chaves St (beside Pit Stop, across Parasat office) and won a devoted clientele that regularly comes in daily, weekly or when-can-you. Despite its relatively ‘young’ age

(it opened last February 9th) it already ranks 9th among 141 restaurants listed by TripAdvisor in Cagayan de Oro, garnering an “excellent” rating for all reviews submitted in its behalf. Said a reviewer from nearby Iligan: “Read about Boy Zugba from the internet and decided we’ll give it a try once we’re in Cdo. I like the artsy names of their food, the ambiance (with their funny local sayings) and their outstanding service. No wonder the place is packed when we got there that night. Will surely dine there next time we’re in town.” The “artsy names” of the menu items were christened by Henrik Yu, the other half of the dynamic duo which came up with the concept for Boy Zugba, the other being his wife, Joanna Cris Lim-Yu. Doy and Ann (as they are known to friends) together with partner Catherine Genabe put up in 1999 Bigby’s Café & Restaurant, their first restaurant whose global cuisine and fine/fast-casual

Sakay sa Bisaya Express

dining format revolutionized the Kagayanons dining habits and now ranks it #5 in Trip Advisor with 8 branches in the Visayas and Mindanao. Another ground-breaking establishment followed in 2000 with the advent of Missy Bon Bon Breadshop Restaurant, serving gelato, pastries, sandwiches and pasta at Limketkai Center, and now ranked the #7 restaurant in Cagayan de Oro by Trip Advisor. As if two game-changing restaurants weren’t enough for a lifetime, the partners have put their collective wisdom together to come up

with yet another winner in Boy Zugba. Those who’ve grown fond of Bigby’s and Miss Bon Bon, will find themselves right at home with the trademark “artsy names” they’ve become familiar with, (courtesy of Doy) like Gidagat na Calamares, Humba ni Opaw! (with pride bread), Sakay na sa Bicol Express!, Humba …is that Steeww?, Pansat Gihubog sa Itlog Maalat, Squid Tac Tic, , Banana de Coco Martin and What’s your plan, leche Flan?but my favorite is Pancit sa Pulis! There’s many more, but I won’t spoil your fun by mentioning them here: Go find out for yourself! But those are but names, so how does the food measure up? Said another local review from Trip Advisor: “Among all the Filipino restaurant that I’ve tried, Boy Zugba has the best Filipino Food so far. Great Food , Excellent Service , Great People. For me, it’s more what you’ve paid for because of the high quality that they serve.” A quick rundown of the fast moving

bestsellers can guide the first time diner: Bandihadong Karne (a sampler of their best selling Pork barbecue, Cheezy Chorizo and Liempo); the classic Kagay-anon Sinuglaw de Cagayan, Chicken Inasal (that can hold its own against the best from the Chicken Inasal capital of the Philippines!), Lechon Kawali Gi Ulanan sa Sili ug Tanglad, Manok La-uya, Presko nga Lumpia Ubod, and not the least, the quaintly named Kiping dala Atik for dessert!

Provincial Director LEO VEGA VELEZ during the awarding of Qualification Map to one of the TWSP participating TVIs in the Province

the Trainingt Induction Programs conducted by TESDA. Participating Technical Vocational Institutions (TVIs) in the Province will also benefit from the program. This would give them the opportunity to offer programs in higher qualifications that would cater to the requirements of the new emerging industries, not discounting the opportunities brought

about by the K to 12 and the ASEAN integration. TESDA on the other hand will continue to provide opportunities in human capital investment by expanding access to quality techvoc and develop workforce competencies required in growth areas. Scholarship implementation is one among/of the programs employed by TESDA to address this battlecry.

Dyedin-the-wool millionaires or even multi-millionaires over lose their view of re a l ity m a ny ti m e s. They can’t even see the horizon, which could be the demarcation of their real estate. They

If you’re rich, you might be on the top. But believe me, once you are on top, you will have some unwelcome, mostly acceptable companions such as loneliness, so-called friends (!), parasites and free-loaders. These companions will let you scream in pain, because you will start missing things, you have expected from them: real friendship, love, care, comprehension, understanding, sympathy, appreciation... .Remember such things? Miss such things?

Yes, money can give you a wonderful sleep, and you might stay in one of the most luxurious beds - but being awake, while your poorest neighbor sleeps better and more peaceful on the floor. You might study a lot and get a lot of experiences; it’s just a pity, if you don;t use them at the right time for the right people in your surroundings. Money can buy food but no appetite. Who reaps the benef its of it? A full to overflowing store room will never be satisfying, if sour freeloaders join your table and push away your real friends. congruence with TESDA’s mandate, Governor Bambi worked hard to have a Training Cum Production Center in the Province-a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) with the support of TESDA. It was his dream that through Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Program of TESDA that Misamis Oriental economies will be supported through the provision of a globally competent workforce; offers a major human resource investment choice for the Filipino workers; and helps bridge the local communities to national and global competencies. Indeed, Governor Bambi is so lucky when sometime in October 2014, during the ocular made by Secretary Emmanuel Joel J. Villanueva of TESDA made a commitment to expedite the development of Libertad Training Center. The Hon. Secretary Joel Villanueva approved the amount of Php 2,000,000.00 for the first phase of its program of works through Training for Work Scholarship Program (TSWP). The courses in a training cum production scheme were under Construction and Metals & Engineering sectors, which the implementing training institution, the Cagayan de Oro (Bugo) School of Arts and Trades-TESDA administered school targeted 275 trainees from Libertad, Initao, Gitagum and other nearby municipalities in Misamis Oriental. The said training started last November 24, 2014 and ended on April 2015. The development of Libertad Training Center with its latest timeline for its near completion and road to success is realized through the coordinated efforts of Gov. Bambi Emano of the Province of Misamis Oriental,

Hon. Mayor Leonardo Uy of the Municipality of Libertad and TESDA Region and TESDA Misamis Oriental. Another 2Million is released for the second phase of the program of work and for the completion of Libertad Training Center with its proposed date of inauguration and turn-over ceremony on August 26, 2015. For the first phase of the project implementation, there were a total of 275 who enrolled the course of Carpentry NC ll ( one batch), Construction Painting NC ll, (3 batches), Electrical Installation & Maintenance NC ll (one batch), Masonry NC ll (2 batches), Plumbing NC ll (2 batches), and Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC ll (2 batches). Of the 275 enrollees, 264 graduated and assessed and 256 were certified. Courses to be offered for the second phase and to answer to the completion of the Training Center are the following: Carpentry NC ll-(one batch) -24 trainees; Construction Painting NC ll (3 batches)-74 trainees; Electrical Installation & Maintenance NC ll (one batch)-25 trainees; Masonry NC ll (one batch)- 24 trainees; Plumbing NC ll (one batch)-23 trainees and Tile Setting (6 batches) – 140 trainees. Libertad Training Center of the Province of Misamis Oriental in the long run will offer programs in higher qualifications that would cater to the new emerging industries, not discounting the opportunities brought about by the K to12 and the ASEAN integration. Along with TESDA, the Hon. Governor Bambi Emano will continue to provide opportunities in human capital investment by expanding access to quality techvoc and develop workforce competencies required in growth areas like Misamis Oriental.

2015 consisted of 1.9 kilometers of swimming at the Camsur Watersports Complex, 90 kilometers of biking in the scenic province of Camarines Sur and 21.1 kilometers of running in Naga City. Lezette conquered all this yet you’d be surprised – she’s already 39 years old. And she has never been a varsity member nor a PE teacher. She’s just a mayoral staff in the municipality of Baungon, Bukidnon. In her early 20s, Lezette settled down with her husband and son in barangay Nazareth. Across the street is Sports Zone and she whiled the time away playing badminton. While playing the game, she slowly discovered that her legs had the knack of running. That piqued her interest and veered towards the sport. Lezette ran first as a hobby until she tried entering into a contest “just for fun.” To her surprise, Lezette placed fifth in the highly competitive North Face 10k Trail Run in 2009.

Galvanized with this success, Lezette challenged herself more and by January of the next year, she joined the 42k Cebu Marathon 2010 where she garnered the 15th spot, clocking in at 5:11. This development was a turning point to Lezette’s inspiration. She pushed her body more and ventured into biking. She also took a swimming coach and after more than a year, she was ready. She entered her first triathlon race in August 2011 in the very same spot where she would garner another victory a few years later – Camarines

Sur. The event: Cobra 70.3. Her placement: 12th spot in the 35-39 category. “After CamSur, I made a promise right there and then. That I’d be back in this place and I’ll be the champion by that time. Not just in the age category but in the elite category,” Lezette recalled in this interview. True to her forecast, on that fateful day of June 14, 2015, Lezette clocked in at 5:25:24 in the women’s division of the Filipino Elite category in Challenge Camsur 2015 under the banner of Team HerbaLife. But the victory was not instantaneous. It was four

years of chasing down triathlon competitions all over the country that Lezette was able to perfect her skills before grabbing the top spot a few weeks ago. And it was also sheer discipline and dedication that she maintained to the sport that did it. Despite having a day job, Lezette wakes up at 3:30 in the morning and bikes from her Nazareth residence to Talakag, Bukidnon and back, trailing a total of 60 kilometers. In the evening after her work, she swims for an hour at Pelaez Sports Center. On weekends, she bikes from here to Iligan City and back. So how does her routine not strain her? “I make sure that in each week, I rest one full day from biking and running,” she quipped. Lezette’s next target: the Cobra 70.3 in Cebu City this August 2015. That’s Lezette Albarote, bringing pride not just to Team HerbaLife but also to her neighbors in Cagayan de Oro and her constituents in Baungon, Bukidnon!
