We bookworms in Cagayan de Oro must be proud of our city: two books by two home grown authors within the year and both overseas! After Annie Gorra’s The Mystery on 17th Street earlier this year, now comes Kristyn MaslogLevis The Girl Between Two Worlds, incidentally both published by Anvil Publishing Inc., the publishing arm of National Book Store (NBS). Kagay-anons thank the people in Anvil who championed our home-grown talents like Annie and KK! Incidentally, there’s another common thread running through these authors besides both hailing from Cagayan de Oro: they were both previously with media,

Annie with broadcast and print (Newscope and Frontline Mindanao) and KK with ABS-CBN TV Patrol Northern Mindanao and some local specials by the same station. But we digress! “The Girl Between Two Worlds” is actually KK’s third book, the first two being self-published children’s books, “The Dragon and the Lizard” and “We Have It All (A True Story).” In a guest post at Kids Book Review, an online blog about children’s books( http://www.kidsbookreview.com/2011/11/ guest-post-self-publishingon-budget.html), KK relates the joys and trevails of “Self-Publishing on a Budget” as well as how the story came about. To quote: “The reason

why I wrote my book was not for publication but to preserve a family story Mama used to tell us as kids. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up so books were a scarcity. I remember a torn and tattered copy of Alice in Wonderland and that’s about it.” “Luckily, my mother is a treasure box of stories. I was afraid to write The Dragon and the Lizard because inside I knew I might want to take it further that just a family book, and I was afraid to take it there on my own. But I couldn’t let the story die so I wrote it.” Like her first book, KK’s second was another children’s book “We Have It All (A True Story), also self-published and can still be purchased from Amazon. As she describes it: “Yes it is a true story… based on our childhood in the Philippines and the premise is that no matter how little you have, no matter what kind of hardships you’re going through, there is always a brighter side to things.” “It’s about our childhood years without TV, computer games, books and toys. It’s about our childhood living in a house with only half a roof and half a floor. It’s about how happy our childhood was and how we need these reminders to see the good things about our lives today.” (Pssst…Annie Gorra, are you reading this?) I bet a quick scan of this first effort would lead one to the present novel, like many great works which started life as a short story and eventually progressed to a full length novel. When asked about the origins of her first novel, KK replied to me in an email:

“For the last couple of years I’ve been working on my first ever novel that included the Filipino mythology and takes it outside of the Philippines. After four years of writing, editing and pitching, Anvil Publishing picked up my book last year.” “I vividly remember where the concept came from. I was wondering why when Filipinos migrate to other countries we stop ‘seeing’ spirits, ghosts and monsters everywhere. I remember saying tabi apo as a child and being scared of kicking ant hills because a Nuno sa Punso might be living there. I remember freaking out when I heard bat wings because it might be a manananggal! And who wasn’t scared of the harmless banga in the corner of the house? A Tiyanak might be living in there, you never know.” “But when I moved to Australia, all of those creatures suddenly disappeared. I stopped saying tabi apo and highways at night weren’t homes of the white lady anymore. I did feel a bit sad.” “So I wondered, what if even after you migrate to another country, these creatures still haunt you. What if there was a Tiyanak in the park where you take your kids? What if there was a manananggal living close to your house? That was how “The Girl Between Two Worlds” was born.” She also professed to having a “huge part of me” wanting to showcase Filipino folklore to the world. “Those vampires and werewolves are puppies compared to our aswangs and manananggals! We grew up with very rich stories – some scarier than others. Why not share this with the world?”

With this first in a trilogy, KK hopes to “spread the wonderful fear that our stories provide.” Anvil Publishing House has set a July release for the novel and like Annie’s Mystery on 17th Street, it will also be distributed by National Bookstore. We can only hope NBS provides sufficient copies of the book especially to its four branches in Limketkai, Centrio, Cogon and SM unlike Annie’s novel which arrived in trickles (Good thing it’s finally available in all branches). Here’s an excerpt from The Girl Between Two Worlds as posted in the author’s Facebook page: “The day after Karina’s sixteenth birthday, supernatural things start to happen around her and she has no idea why. Her mother, who disappeared soon after they migrated from the Philippines to America, speaks to her in prophetic dreams. Stranger still is the old man who turns up at her house one day and claims to be her grandfather, even though Karina’s mother had told her he died a long time ago.” “Karina discovers that her mother is an engkanto princess who ran away from Engkantasia. Karina is now of age to take the throne and must do so to prevent a war between Engkantasia and the human world. She must learn to control her powers

and fight a range of weird creatures trying to kill her and her family. To make matters worse, she finally meets a boy she likes and there’s something about him she can’t quite figure out.” As for influencers, KK admits to “reading a lot of books and it wasn’t really any one person in particular.” When she finished her two self published children’s picture books “it just flowed from there. I got bitten by the writing bug and couldn’t stop,” she adds. Please don’t! We have to have those two other books asap and we hope we don’t wait another four years for the next one! Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra Concert Master Marc Hamlet Mercado, Krystal’s mentor in Cebu, started her with the orchestra’s rehearsals until she was proficient enough to join its regular events. Similarly, MSO Conductor Arturo Molina mentored Krystal during the MSO Intensive Summer Workshop and helped her join the MSO Juniors after her evaluation since she can’t join the MSO until she is 18. Krystal’s love of music was imbibed early from Weng, whose family is musically inclined with many singers and musicians. “I was a piano and organ teacher before,” Weng said. “I wanted to study piano but since my parents couldn’t afford it, I saved my baon to

pay the teacher and fortunately, I managed to get further lessons on a scholarship.” “When Krystal was a little girl, I let her try a lot of things like swimming, painting, dance lessons, and public speaking. When she was Grade 4, she wanted to join the Rondalla Club so I bought her first bandurria. On the day of her audition, she had fever and was unable to perform. She cried and texted me (in Saudi!) to convince Sr. Sosima at YLAC (where she spent her elementary days) to allow her to audition. Sr. Sosima was very strict but in the end, she allowed Krystal to audition and she passed it.” When she was 11, Weng bought Krystal her first violin so she could start her private lessons. She auditioned for the Mandaue School for the Arts where she had to present 3 talents (voice, bandurria and violin) and a grade above 85 to qualify. She passed all exams with flying colors, making the top 12. “When I found out Krystal wanted to study violin abroad, I was dismayed since it’s so expensive and I was the sole breadwinner, so I researched for scholarships and grants since I wanted her to have the best teachers that I could afford.” “Two years ago she told me she wanted to go to the US but I challenged her to top her class and I would allow her to try for a visa. She did just that and was granted a US visa so we visited the US last year. She really wanted to go to Julliard and NYU but I told her “pa picture lang sa ta ana na mga schools ha?” Krystal initially planned to attend the Children’s Orchestra Society (COS) Intensive Summer Seminar Workshop of Michael Dapdap and Dr. Yeou Cheng Ma at Molly College. The Children’s Orchestra Society is a non-profit organization

dedicated to teaching children and teens “the language of music.” Dadap is a popular Filipino guitarist, composer, conductor, and influential advocate of Filipino folk music. He was instrumental in the creation of a worldclass rondalla ensemble in the United States and is also the founding music director of the Iskwelahang Rondalla (Rondalla School) of Boston, Massachusetts. However, when that fell through, Dapdap referred Krystal to the Long Island University (LIU) Post-Chamber Music Festival where she managed to submit her audition video at the 11th hour against all odds with the help of LDCU College of Music Dean Rudolf P. Golez and Liceo Conservatory Prof. Hans Backer. The LIU PostChamber Music Festival is an intensive three week seminar that focuses on the study and performance of the standard chamber music repertoire. Coached by the faculty ensemble-inresidence, The Pierrot Consort, the program includes Chamber Ensembles, Chamber Orchestras, Faculty and Student Concerts, Master

Classes, a Conducting Program and a Concerto Competition. The artist members of the ensemble are actively involved in the musical life of New York City and have a commitment to the educational life of Long Island. The members of The Pierrot Consort are Susan Deaver, flute; Dale Stuckenbruck, violin; Veronica Salas, viola; Maureen Hynes, cello and Heawon Kim, piano. The Pierrot Consort is a member of Chamber Music America. The 35th Edition of the festival runs on July 11-29 and includes Master Classes by the members of the Pierrot Consort, the Ensemble-in-Residence at Brookville, NY. But even earlier when Krystal learned of her acceptance to the COS, she asked Weng to ask Dr Ma if she was available for private lessons to coach Krystal on her Bruch Concerto No.1 in G Minor performance after her chamber music classes at LIU. After some time, Dr Ma said yes. Dr Yeou Cheng Ma is a child prodigy who started to learn music at age 2 ½ when her father taught her the violin and piano lessons with another when she was 3, and won her first award when she was 7. Like Krystal, Dr Ma and her famous brother Yo-Yo were also recipients of free lessons while growing up and were moved by how their teachers

believed in them. Which is why COS charges very little for its programs as a community service. From an 18-member ensemble, COS now has four orchestras with over 200 students. Although it requires auditions, COS accepts children regardless of talent or income provided they show a burning desire to learn. Even if they play the harmony rather than the main melody, Dr Ma often tells second violins and violas they are vital for an orchestra and relates how she learned to listen to the music during her first year at Julliard. This develops patience, team work, and dedication. And a desire to learn Krystal has in spades. If the mother finds ways to find the means, the daughter is equally up to perfect her craft, often practicing in school from 3:30PM right after her classes end, and even longer at home right after she finishes supper around 6:30PM and often up to or way past midnight. She starts with warms ups, does her scales and etudes, before proceeding to practice her piece. Among her favorites are Mozart’s Concerto in G and Bach’s Sonata No. 1 in G Minor Adagio. But playing the violin is just one of Krystal’s goals as she goes along her musical journey. Prof. Hans Backer, German faculty for Liceo Conservatory, said “She has an edge because

of her burning goal to be one of the few great female conductors in the world.” Krystal is taking minor in Conducting under Backer and Rudiments 1 and Solfeggio 2 under Michael Jhun Padua Paceno. “I got interested in taking up conducting because since my elementary days, I would take charge of the rondalla if our teacher was absent, which I also did when I was in grades 7 and 8 in Junior High School.” In grades 9 and 10, she taught her classmates and lower grade levels when the violin teacher was absent and also handled the ensembles. In Grade 10, she joined a guitar ensemble, conducting and training the group which won first place in a competition. Following those experiences, she became interested in conducting. “There are only few female conductors in the world and so far no Filipina conductor to date. I want to prove that girls can be great conductors, too. I was happy to have met the owner, Janice. She’s very nice, smiling, hardworking, beautiful and humble. I must say, she did great with opening Mango Mania here in Cagayan de Oro City. It’s something unique which makes it special. I asked her a few questions about Mango Mania… 1. How, when and why did you start Mango Mania? - It all started a few years ago when I was doing an extensive travel throughout Asia. I discovered that fresh fruit desserts were very popular, specifically mango. I, like other Asians, love tropical fruit desserts as they’re much healthier. More interestingly, the best mangoes being served throughout Asia come from the Philippines. Then, an idea came to pass: why not offer the same healthy dessert back home? After

A little something about you in connection to the business… - Since I love eating fresh fruits, I consider mango as one of those amazing fruits which you can actually mix with any food and it will still give a delightful taste. There is so much that you can do with mangoes. They are great with other fruits, sago, salad, etc. I love inspiring people with healthy dessert options and I hate the fact that most desserts that are available out there are heavy, too sweet and starchy which are big NO-NOs to your health. 3. All natural ingredients? - Yes, Mango Mania uses nature’s goodness to produce delightful healthy desserts. We only use natural ingredients, nonartificial flavors and the customers have the flexibility of choosing their own sweetness preference.

4. Again: Europe - quo vadis? When the results were on the table, I really was shocked. And not only me? What does the Brexit mean for the United Kingdom’s and Europe’s future? What does the Brexit means for the whole global economy? Let me focus especially to France and the United Kingdom. The French business might to gain from Brexit, but also a “Frexit” menaces. Following the Brexit, the UK’s closest continental neighbor faces its own political challenges. But the French are also poised to benefit should the UK lose access to the single market. As Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” about Paris and London, begins, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” The same could be said after Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union with a nearly 52-percent vote. France, the United Kingdom’s closest continental neighbor, will have its own set of political and economic challenges in the days ahead: from losing Great Britain as a partner at

the EU round table to the specter of its own Frexit referendum. But the French are also poised to benefit should the UK lose access to the single market. Honestly, the Franco-British political relationship had never been defined by the European Union but is based on bilateral interests. I am sure, that this will not change. It’s not like Germany, where the Franco-German relationship is extremely important as long as the EU is working well. As for refugees an issue that “Leave” campaigners had hammered hard to drum up votes - French center-right Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron had previously said migrants would no longer be stuck at Calais in the event of a Brexit. But Macron’s statement was just an empty threat, and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said France would uphold its end of the 2003 Le Touquet treaty, which allows UK immigration police to conduct controls on the French

side of the channel. Economy Minister Macron had said the Brexit would mean an influx into Britain from Calais. France had its own day of union reckoning in 2005, when voters rejected an EU-wide constitutional treaty. Could a Frexit be next? Marine Le Pen, of the far-right National Front party, has long been an advocate of ditching the Euro currency and has already said that France needs to follow Great Britain’s lead and get out of the EU. Le Pen is expected to reach the second round of next year’s presidential elections and says France isn’t the only country that should have a referendum: She wants all EU members to go to the polls. At the latest then, the question will arise: Europe - quo vadis? Ahead of the Brexit referendum, Herve Mariton, who is running for the center-right presidential ticket, had said he would expect the French to ask for a vote similar to the Brexit referendum, and he was

not confident that voters would necessarily choose to remain. As the Brexit referendum result sank in in Paris on Friday, 32-year-old Victor Jauvin said it was good that democracy exists to allow such votes, but he is nevertheless upset about the United Kingdom’s looming exit. “This was 200 years of developing this Europe,” he said. “It’s sad that it’s begun to disintegrate.” “Hyperdemocracy is going to come one day for decisions like this, where we have to consult the citizens of all EU countries,” Jauvin said.
