The Division Schools Press Conference is an annual tilt among students covering the following subjects – News Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Editorial Writing, Photojournalism, Script Writing, Radio Broadcasting, Feature Writing, Copyreading
and Headline Writing, Science and Health Writing, Sports Writing, Collaborative Publishing, Tagisan ng Talino and TV Broadcasting. Winners of the Division Schools Press Conference which ended last Sunday will be the city’s representatives to the Regional Schools Press Conference which will be held later in the year. The regional winners will then be sent to the National Schools Press Conference which will be held in Dapitan dspc/PAGE 7

“I’d like to think that I was born for the hospitality industry.” These are the words of Armand Angeles, the new hotel manager of Seda Centrio.
Ever since he can remember, he has always wanted to be involved in something connected with the hospitality industry. Growing up, he wanted to be a
chef and open his own restaurant. Then he realized that he was not cut out for a job in the kitchen; that cooking, for him, was more for entertaining.

LIMETKAI LUXE’S SOUS CHEF BAGS AWARD ON CHEFMANSHIP ACADEMY
U
nilever Food Solutions (UFS) held its globally successful Chefmanship Academy here in the City of Golden Friendship last July 21, 2016 with the goal of spreading the mark of true chefmanship. During the past years, the Philippine food industry has shown remarkable growth which is an appropriate time for UFS to support the various chefs all over the country who are being challenged by the increased competition in the market. The Chefmanship Academy was first started last 2009 by UFS Germany to help restaurateurs and chefs to improve their businesses through a series of workshops and seminars. The training modules made for the workshop focused on Menu Planning, Counting Costs, Food Plating and Presentation, and Banqueting led by Executive Chef Joanne Limoanco-Gendrano, her Sous-Chef Carlos Aluning and their team. Through the session, the chefs shared important food trends, insights and learnings about running a food business For the last part of the workshop, there was a cooking competition called Elite Chef Challenge wherein chefs from different restaurants and hotels within the province were tasked to prepare their best noodlebased dish using the ingredients provided
by UFS in a span of 45 minutes. From the 15 chefs who joined, the champion of the said competition was Chef Benjie from Limketkai Luxe Hotel. He prepared a delicious Thai-style seafood noodle soup that the judges loved. According to them, they chose his dish because it was “very well thought out and well prepared”. The dish is called, Glass Noodles Seafood with Tofu in Coconut Milk Kaffir Lime Soup. The ingredients of which are the following: Glass Noodles (Sotanghon), Shrimp, Fish Cake, Kani Stick, Tofu, Coconut Milk, Kaffir Lime Leaves, Lemon Grass, Knorr Napoli, Knorr Shrimp Powder, Knorr Chicken Broth, Knorr Lime Powder, Fish Sauce, Fresh Shitake Mushroom, Cherry Tomato, Fried Shallots, Ginger, White Onion, Garlic and Chili. For five days, 20,000 delegates met in the South African coastal city of Durban to take stock of progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, against a background of warnings that recent gains are under threat. The delegates to the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban came from more than 180 countries around the world. Most were from the worst-affected regions in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Nearly 20 million people in Africa are aff licted with the AIDS virus. South Africa has the highest infection rate in the world with nearly seven million affected. One of the senior HIV/AIDS research specialists in South Africa, Professor Jerry Coovadia, presented a paper on the state of the disease in that country. Coovadia said South Africa had made enormous progress in curbing the spread of AIDS and providing treatment to affected people. But, Professor Jerry
Coovadia is optimistic that the fight against AIDS can be won. South Africa has the largest anti-retroviral (ARV) program in the world with more than three million people on ARV treatment. He said there was no doubt that “we will continue to make progress. To really eradicate HIV/AIDS is going to be a long job but it’s not impossible, given the advances in medicine, given the advances in what we know about genes and how genes can affect it, given our advances in the best forms of treatment. Very important, too, is prevention circumcision, condoms, change in sexual behavior, monogamy and so on. So I think it is possible but it is going to take a long time.” Yes, there are plans for a new vaccine study. Delegates expressed great interest in the announcement made at the conference that promising results from an early safety trial with a potential HIV vaccine had paved the way for a major new
study in South Africa. 5,400 volunteers will take part in trials for the experimental vaccine called HVTN 702 due to start in November. How about official and in-official figures and numbers for the Philippines? The alarming situation should be addressed immediately as this may lead to an epidemic. But, the topic AIDS has been, is and seems to remain a hot potato, though only an immediate government intervention is badly needed to stop the spread of AIDS. The Philippines is among the countries who posted dramatic increase of AIDS victims closely being monitored by the United Nations. AIDS doesn’t know any special season. Not the question “Sex first before love, or love before sex” is relevant. Besides all discussions regarding “pro-and-contralife”, feminists’ sexual rights and freedom , using contraceptives or observing the safe periods in lovemaking, yes, what partners (married or not!) are

Sabotage causes Baloi-Agus 2 lines 1 and 2 tripping; 82mw isolated from the Mindanao grid At 10:47AM, July 20, a tree branch tied with rope was intentionally thrown at NGCP's Baloi-Agus 2 138 kiloVolt (kV) Line 1 in Brgy. Adapun Ali, Balo-I, Lanao del Norte. The act of sabotage caused the line to trip, and isolated Agus 1 and 2 hydroelectric plants, which currently provides 82MW of power to the
Mindanao grid. Efforts to immediately clear the line of the obstruction was significantly delayed as the landowner, Abner Sulog, initially refused NGCP entry to the transmission line corridor. Just a week ago, Line 2 of the same Baloi – Agus 2 line was similarly sabotaged. Line 2 has
been out since July 12 after unknown persons maliciously erected a bamboo pole within NGCP's right-of-way corridor, causing the transmission line to trip. Attempts to reenergize the line failed after claimant over the property, Mapangkat Luman, refused NGCP access to the

Another line, Agus 2-Kibawe 138kV line, remains unenergized since May 3, 2016,
when one of its towers was bombed by still unidentified perpetrators. The said line could have delivered the power from Agus 1 and 2 hydro facilities to the rest of the Mindanao grid. NGCP could not repair the bombed tower because of an ongoing case against land claimants, Sambitory family, who refused NGCP’s line personnel entry to the property to repair tower 25. The company requested for a Temporary Restraining Order against the family, with the hearing set on
August 10, 2016. NGCP reiterates its appeal to the national and local governments, community leaders and the general public to respect the transmission right-of-way. "NGCP continues in its efforts to provide world-class, reliable and efficient power transmission services to all areas within its franchise. But our efforts are oftentimes hindered by these claimants who seem determined to burden the public with avoidable power interruptions," the company said.

And he likes the fact that Kagayanons are making it easier for him to adapt to his new environment. “Everyone, even the people welcoming me into the hotel, is just so friendly.” He admits, though, that he has yet to master the dialect. Aside from his people skills (he likes to go around talking to people) and his dedication to efficient customer service, Armand’s strength lies in the fact that he has built a career with Seda. “I’ve grown up with the company. Its culture is ingrained in me.” He vows to pass on whatever he has learned to the Seda Centrio family. At the same time, he knows he will learn a lot from Kagay-anons. Young as he is, Armand knows what he needs and wants to do to continue the relationship that Seda has started with Kagay-anons and their guests. He knows the advantage the hotel has over the others. “In terms of service, we are up there,” he said. At Seda, everyone is
treated like a member of the family. Guests who frequent the hotel are often surprised by how much the servers remember their preferences. It’s easy to extend personal service to guests. Hotel employees also communicate with each other freely, so that when a regular guest comes in, they immediately know what to do. One can say, “Mr. John Doe is here with us again. Don’t forget, he likes his room this way,” and the others will easily pick up from there. These are small acts that create a big impact, and this is what Armand hopes to continue. “I really don’t want to do anything drastically different than what my predecessor has already done here,” he said. His intention is to stay consistent to the brand’s international standards and for Seda to continue growing. With his dedication and commitment, coupled with years of experience in the hotel industry, Armand is sure to achieve the goals he set for the hotel – and for himself – in no time at all. But, he’s not in a hurry. In fact, he intends to stay here for a long time.
