Of the 21 official participants for the Kids Category, 12 made it to the finals on Day 2. Crismar Lariosa, from Opol garnered 51.34 points for the 7 final sets as the 2nd Runner Up (Rank 3).

Curt Gaabucayan, was1st Runner Up (Rank 2) after pulling off an over-all 53.00

points on the 7 final sets, while Lester “Panoy” Rosal earned the title of Ultimate Shore-breaker for the Kid Category with impressive sets and 54.67 over-all points.

For the Advance Category, 9 finalists showcased their finest sets on the Finals. War Padiala, of Iligan City was 2nd Runner Up (Rank 3) with 48 points during the final sets.

John Michael Tawakal, of Opol was 1st Runner Up (Rank 2) with 49 over-all points while Daykie Yana, also from Opol was declared the Ultimate Shore-breaker for the Advance Category with 50.34 points.

In the Masters Category, 8 professional finalists from all over competed for this year’s title. RJ Edrozo, from Opol, was 2nd Runner Up (Rank 3) with 56 points.

Dingdong Lagmay, from Iligan City with 60.67 over-all points was 1st Runner Up. Christian Quitat, also from Iligan City, was declared Champion for the Masters Category with 65.34 over-all points.

He previously finished 1st Runner Up (Rank 2) Open Category in the Shore-breaks 2 Competition and placed 2nd (Rank 3) in the 1st Shore-Breaks Tournament. Christian is renowned for his Flat Backside 180 degrees and/or Flat Frontside 180 degrees combining some FrontsideShuvits.

Jelson Ortiz, from Tandag City, Surigao del Sur garnered an over-all 55.67 points in the Masters Category eventually finishing 3rd but won the Best Trick Award.

Winners were judged based on the following criteria: Creativity – 40%; Difficulty – 30%; Smoothness – 20%, and Audience Impact – 10%, for a total of 100% with 7 sets.

All other competitors received complimentary tickets during the Endless Summer Pool and Foam Party last May 21, 2017.

CSWD to train teachers in psychosocial therapy to IDPs

PROFESSIONAL psychologists and associates from the City Social Welfare Department (CSWD) of Cagayan de Oro will be training teachers on how to undergo psychosocial therapy to elementary and secondary students enrolled here who were displaced in the ongoing battles in Marawi City.

City Social Welfare Department chief psychologist Jayvee Leonen admitted on Thursday that they are overwhelmed with the large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) that they are catering and their manpower is stretched thin.

In Cagayan de Oro City alone, there are 14,994 persons

Leonen said they could not personally provide psychosocial intervention to each one of them but they could train other professionals to do so, in this instance the public school teachers.

She said that CSWD modified its psychosocial intervention module to tailor-fit the Maranao culture and the age demographic of the children.

Forty public school

principals from Cagayan de Oro City attended a meeting with Leonen last Thursday to discuss the challenges that have emerged when IDP students began trickling into their campuses.

There were three common problems that needed to be addressed – many Maranaospeaking children could not understand the prevailing Cebuano vernacular, the students are demanding for Islamic prayer/ablution rooms and there were at least a dozen cases of bullying.

Some obese IDP students complained

that they were being shouted at “baboy”, which is doubly offensive for them considering that pig’s meat is sacrilegious for the Muslim Maranaos.

One 14-year-old female seventh grader said she felt offended that some of her male classmates kept staring at her figure. Islam prohibits exposure of one’s figure especially when it is in a sexual context.

Other students also avoided their IDP counterparts, dubbing them as “Maute terrorists.”

All these concerns could be addressed by the psychosocial intervention, according

to Leonen.

Also present in the meeting was Department of Education (DepEd) disaster response overseer Ronilda Co who announced that they are temporarily deploying the displaced Maranao public school teachers in Northern Mindanao to serve as translators to the Maranaospeaking students who could not understand Cebuano.

In the meantime, all parents of the IDP students have undergone briefing on basic campus regulations for their children to be familiar with.

‘Kausaban’ confab addresses challenges in teaching creative writing in Mindanao Report by Hazel Aspera Photos by Mark Acero

Seventy-five creative writing teachers from various corners of Mindanao and four professors from the Ateneo de Manila University came together at Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan for the Kausaban Forum on Teaching Creative Writing.

First of its kind in Cagayan de Oro City, the forum, held on Saturday, July 15, was

organized in response to the challenges in teaching creative writing, a subject included in the newly-implemented K-12 program by the Department of Education.

Many educators expressed the need to strengthen their understanding of the four genres covered on this subject, namely, poetry, fiction, essay, and drama as creative writing

goes far beyond the conventional language and literature subjects in the previous educational model.

Creative writing requires an approach that is different from conventional teaching practices.

“Tingnan natin ang larawan ni Mona Lisa at ni Lisa Simpson,” said Allan Derain, a professor from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Kagawaran ng Filipino.

“The past is like a song. You can take an old record, put it on and listen to it. But that’s not the job of an essayist. An essayist is like a DJ who takes different records, remixes them and puts them together in a way that is meaningful,” said Villanueva on writing narrative nonfiction.

The Power of Prayer When tragedy strikes, it’s easy to harden our hearts and cry out, “God, why did you let this happen?” Maybe then, we started praying.

Before, when everything goes smooth, we would not even think a minute about praying... .

“To be a Christian without prayer, “said Martin Luther, “is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Prayer is the only way of becoming what God wants us to be. This is the reason, why Jesus spent many hours in praying.

Unquestionable, our needs bring us to a place of prayer. Confronted with danger or tragedies, as I mentioned earlier, we look for God’s help. Difficult times always cause the hearts of men to turn to God into prayer.

Let me ask you: How long has it been since your’re brought your burdens to God? Since you asked His forgiveness for your shortcomings?

In his very interesting book “People in Prayer”, Dr. John White reminds us that prayer is a divine-human interaction and it is always God who takes the initiative. White write: “God speaks and we respond. God is always speaking. To hear his voice is not usually a mystical experience. It consists merely of a willingness to pay heed to God who lays a claim to our lives.”

Yes, God always speaks. It is up to us whether we will listen and respond to Him. Many think we are the ones who initiate prayer.

But prayers begin and end with God. There was a time, I wasn’t in the mood to pray any more. It seemed that God didn’t listen my prayer any more. I didn’t get what I prayed for. Of course, not... ! That’s not the meaning of praying to God. All my wishes will be granted?

Heaven forbid!

H ave M y Say Sometimes, after we have prayed, God’s answers may puzzle us. But as time times goes by and as events unfold we see God’s purpose in His answers. We might get a larger vision, what Klaus Doring HE likes. Not what WE like... .

Think about it for a moment: How does the idea that prayer begins and ends with God affect me now? Do I have the habit of listening to God? How do I respond to Him? How do I usually pray?

I confess that long time ago I have been trying to persuade God to change other people in my surroundings or circumstances. Nothing changed. Of course not, what a fatal attraction?

I got confused because God never granted my requests. Meanwhile I got God’s answers to my prayers. Maybe very simple: I was willing to let God change me... .This is how each one of us should start. Happy endings. Because I prayed according to His will... .

Nowadays, I live a wonderful life in my second and last home, the Philippines. I never regretted to move here for good. I have everything I could ask for. I can do everything I wish to do. XU-GLI, Pilipinas Shell Fndn offer barangay governance course for Puntod, Macabalan leaders

In partnership with Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc (PSFI), the Governance and Leadership Institute (GLI) of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan organized a leadership and barangay governance enhancement course for the leaders and residents of barangays Puntod (on June 27-28) and Macabalan (on July 10-11) in Cagayan de Oro City.

During the workshops, the two barangays identified priority concerns which they could refer to when making their plans.

For Brgy Puntod, they identified disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM), illegal drugs, health and sanitation, traffic management, and sustainable livelihood as priority issues.

Barangay Macabalan, on the other hand, identified the following

as their top concerns: absence of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), illegal drugs, DRRM, informal settlers, increasing number of out-of-school youth, health, and political patronage.

Participants also identified other stakeholders in their barangay who could help in addressing their priority concerns.

The case study “Bakit Namatay si Rosario,” one of the activities during the workshops, particularly struck the participants and introduced them to the "Systems Thinking" approach in analyzing poverty.

In implementing its social development programs, PSFI chose to tie up with barangays Puntod and Macabalan for being the fence line communities of their North Mindanao Import Facility (NMIF).

Cebu Pacific to provide airlift support to wounded soldiers, cops in Marawi CEB to provide free cargo for relief goods for Marawi Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) will be providing airlift support to military and police personnel wounded in action (WIA) in Marawi City.

On top of the free airlift on Cebu Pacific flights, the WIA government troops will also get baggage allowance of up to 40 kilograms.

In cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), this initiative aims to augment air support by the Philippine Air Force by helping move wounded government troops from field hospitals in the area to larger medical facilities of the AFP and PNP. Through this, field medical stations can be declogged, giving way for wounded soldiers and police personnel who need immediate medical attention.

SSS ready to implement EC Funeral benefit hike in 1 month from effectivity date State-run Social Security System (SSS) on Thursday said it is ready to implement the recently issued Executive Order No. 33 by President Rodrigo Duterte ordering the increase of the Employees’ Compensation (EC) funeral benefits for government and private sector employees from P20,000 to P30,000 within 30 days from the publication date of the Implementing Rules and Regulations to be issued by the Employees’ Compensation Commission.

SSS administers the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP) for workers in the private sector. Under the ECP, workers will receive compensation benefits for illness, disability and death resulting from occupational diseases and workrelated activities. EC benefits are granted only to members with employers. The employer shoulders the cost of the employee's EC contributions.

The EO was signed last July 17 citing “there is a need to continually improve benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP) to make them more responsive to the welfare and development needs of occupationally disabled workers.”
