Philippine Institute for Skills and Arts Development (PISAD) 1st Commencement Exercises

he region’s premier school Philippine Institute for Skills and Arts Development (PISAD) and duly accredited by the Technical Education & Skills Development Authority (TESDA) had its 1st ever Commencement Exercises last December 27, 2014, 2:11 P.M. at Centrio Ayala Mall Event Center, Cagayan de Oro City. After finishing a total of 275 hours or a total of 35 days training period required by TESDA, 54 successful dressmakers graduated with flying colors during the commencement exercise which was attended by over 500 spectators, guests, visitors and the graduates themselves. The graduates are scholars of TESDA under PESFA and Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP Batches 1 and 2). TESDA with ISO standards gave National Certificates (NC 11) to these qualified graduates as they are prepared and honed their innate talents for global competitiveness in the field of garments and fashion industry in the region.

ig Bite Northern Mindanao Food Festival, the region’s biggest food festival kicked off at the Centrio Ayala Mall,

Cagayan de Oro City, Januar y 9.

This food festival aims to promote the best foods and other products of Northern

Mindanao. Big Bite showcased Misamis Oriental’s Kuyamis Festival, Green Bukidnon, Food Basket of Mindanao and The B ounty of the Sea and culminates Sunday Januar y 11 featuring the foods and dishes of Camiguin, Iligan and Misamis Occidental.

Celebrity Chefs Mar vin Agustin B oy Logro and Jeric Gonzales also graced the 3-day

food festival much to the delight of the mall goers and shoppers.

Centrio shoppers were also encouraged to join in on the festivities as shoppers got a chance to win the golden raffle to the Big Buffet held ever y night from Januar y 9-11 at the Centrio Gardens, 80 shoppers a day were randomly chosen to win.

creatures of habit T hink a minute…You’ve probably heard the expression “A leopard can’t change its spots.”

This, of course, is true of leopards.

But is it true of people? Can people change? Are we humans just creatures of habit? Do we not have any control over our actions and habits?

One guy said, “Bad habits are like a comfortable bed: they’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” Someone else said: “The chains of habits are too small to feel until they’re too strong to break.” So ‘breaking the mold’ of our bad habits takes effort, yet one of the greatest freedoms in life is the freedom from bad habits.

Habits are like the roads we take through life everyday. The problem is that not every road takes us where we need to go.

Actually, our routes through life often become our ruts in life.

We end up stuck in them and find it hard to dig ourselves out.

That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our ‘second nature’. You see, our habits

become our character and our character becomes our life. As one wise person said: “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”

But we humans don’t like to change, do we? So we come up with excuses, like: “I can’t be different; that’s just the way I am.” Or we say: “I was born this way.” And the good ol’ saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that’s just it: we’re not dogs or animals. In fact, we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we become.

So what habits do you need to start changing today? You know, there’s one bad habit you need to change first, that will help you change all your other habits. It’s the habit of living your own way, instead of your Maker’s way. He’s the only one who knows the road to the best, most satisfying life for you. So today, won’t you ask Jesus Christ to forgive you, and to take full charge of your habits and life?

appy New Year my dear readers! The new year will be a challenge for the EU. The economy has to be boosted with public investments worth billions, and a clear policy towards Russia is more urgent than ever.

“We will have a breath of fresh air, but not galeforce winds,” said European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker, when he was asked in an interview, if he expected any changes in 2015. And I strongly agree with him.

The EU Commission wants to give a new impetus to t he EU’s st r ug g ling economy and focus primarily on the creation of jobs and its investment program worth 315 billion euros ($381 billion). “Nonetheless, b a lancing t he nat iona l budgets will continue to be important,” Juncker said, hoping to reduce expectations in economic crisis countries such as Italy and France.

T h e C o m m i s s i o n’s economic forecasts predict a modest growth rate of 1.1 percent for the euro zone, with developments in single member states continuing

to be markedly different: Germany will fare reasonably well, whereas other major euro zone countries will, m ore l i k e l y t h a n n ot , stagnate. Jyrki Katainen, EU commissioner responsible for growth and jobs, has acknowledged that “the economic and employment situation is not recovering.

Greece could fall behind again. As we could learn last December: No more money from the IMF. In the following year, the European Central Bank (ECB) will continue to grapple with the consequences of the sovereign debt crisis and sluggish economic growth.

Economic risks predominate, the ECB concluded in its recently published analysis.

Cause for concern for the m on e t ar y w atch d o g i s provided primarily by an inflation rate considered too low. The ECB stands ready to inject money into the markets on a massive scale; but when this step will be taken remains unclear for the time being. Italy can’t wait for it, but Germany is stepping on the brakes, preferring, as usual, fiscal policy restraint.

The euro crisis, considered overcome by many in Europe, could return in 2015 on a massive scale. While writing this piece, the euro remains on a four-years-low. If Greece’s far-left Syriza party, which is currently leading in opinion polls, wins snap elections, financial market confidence will likely be unsettled.

“The Greeks know very well what a wrong election result would entail,” Juncker w ar ne d blu nt ly. In it s analysis, the Goldman Sachs investment bank has been even more outspoken.

“In the event of a [Syrizaled government no longer paying its debts, leading to a] severe Greek government clash with international lenders, interruption of liquidity provision to Greek banks by the ECB could potentially even lead to a Cyprus-style prolonged ‘bank holiday’,” it said.

Greece, owing a total of 250 billion euros to the International Monetary Fund and various EU institutions, would tumble into financial chaos. A Greek tragedy would obviously affect other states with onerous debts: risk premiums for Cyprus, Italy,

Portugal and, possibly, France would increase. This, in turn, would be poison for public budgets, which are to be used for investments as opposed to increased interest burdens.

And here is another big question? Is the United Kingdom on its way out?

There are growing centrifugal forces with the EU, not just due to the challenging economic situation but also because of a general dissatisfaction with Europe and “the guys in Brussels.”

This trend may continue with the elections to the House of Commons in mid-May. The UK Independence Party (UKIP) could triumph once again after its win in the European elections in May. Driven by UKIP, British P r i m e M i n i s t e r D av i d Cameron has promised his voters to negotiate increased sovereignty for the UK with the EU. But German Chancellor Angela Merkel has already drawn a red line by assuring that “freedom of movement of EU employees is non-negotiable.”

DOT Launches Visit Philippines 2015 in Normin January 5-11, 2014

he Department of Tourism in Region X has launched “Visit the Philippines Year” (VPY) 2015” in Northern Mindanao at the Activity Center of upscale Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.

“This launch is a response to Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr.’s directive to move tourism out of Manila and urge people to visit other places such as Northern Mindanao,” said Catalino E. Chan III, DOT-X regional director.

Earlier, Jimenez cited the

key role of local government units (LGUs) in spurring tour ism outside Met ro Manila. *”Kung saan masigasig talaga ang local [government], doon malakas ang tourism.

Binay who is chairman of the Pag-IBIG Board of Trustees.

“We work hard to earn the trust of our 14.6 million members. Please do not sully the good name of Pag-IBIG Fund with baseless allegations of an anomaly,” Pag-IBIG Fund President and Chief Executive Officer Atty. Darlene Marie Berberabe said.

Berberabe vehemently denied statements made by Senator Trillanes that PagIBIG Fund is involved in an anomaly that allegedly favors contractors whom he claimed were identified with the Vice President.

“In the strongest terms, I deny that Pag-IBIG Fund

favors any stakeholder. On the contrary, we pride ourselves with having leveled the playing field when the new management and the new Board assumed office in 2010,” Atty. Berberabe stated.

“To say that we favor contractors in awarding housing projects is simply false because we do not award projects, nor do we deal with contractors. It is unfortunate that an allegation which discredits the integrity of Pag-IBIG Fund is made, but the basis is not provided. When you do your work professionally, and regard principles of fairness and integrity with the highest standard, it is most disheartening to be dragged into an alleged anomaly that has no basis,” Berberabe said.

The Pag-IBIG President regrets that Pag-IBIG Fund is being pulled into the political controversy.

“We have endeavored to institute reforms since 2010 to ensure that there will not

“Pag-IBIG would not have been able to achieve and maintain its robust financial standing and credit P10.1 billion worth of dividends to its members in 2013, the highest in the Fund’s history, if the allegations of shady deals are true,” she added.

The COA, which is the principal agency that checks the integrity of the Fund’s processes and financials, has issued an “Unqualified Opinion” in both 2012 and 2013 for Pag-IBIG Fund. An Unqualified Opinion is the best finding that an auditor can issue. This is a testament to the fact that Pag-IBIG is not only focused on performing and exceeding targets in its housing and savings mandates, but also in good corporate housekeeping and thus good governance.

Atty. Berberabe also emphasized that Pag-IBIG enjoys the trust of developer groups and maintains a good working relationship with them.

During the NCR Developer’s Forum held last October 2014, Paul Tanchi, Chairman of the Board of the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association, Inc. (SHDA) described the leadership of Pag-IBIG as embodied by competence and character.

In the same event, Engr. Jefferson S. Bongat, Chairman of the Board of the Organization of Socialized Housing Developers of the Philippines (OSHDP) also praised Pag-IBIG, comparing its professionalism and efficiency to that of a well run, top private company or bank.

In 2010, Pag-IBIG Fund filed a syndicated estafa case against GA President Delfin Lee and cohorts, which led to the prosecution of several GA officers and a Pag-IBIG employee.

According to Atty.

Berberabe, after the GA issue, Pag-IBIG introduced reforms that some developers initially found very stringent. These reforms involved the lifting of the authority previously granted to developers to approve home loans, and the strict implementation now of the procedure where the Fund personally validates the identity and capacity to pay of each of its housing loan borrowers, which initially slowed down the takeout process. She said that after they explained the changes in the Pag-IBIG processes, the developers understood that the reforms were intended for the best interest of all Pag-IBIG Fund stakeholders, particularly its members.

“Since we implemented these reforms, we have significantly improved the integrity of our portfolio. We improved our underwriting thereby resulting in better performing loans ratio. We also outsourced the collection of our non-performing loans. As a result, we converted almost 50% of our non-performing loans back to performing loans, a huge feat in the housing industry,” Atty. Berberabe emphasized.
