Barangay 31 is the home of Santo Niño where the Parish was founded years ago, and yearly thereafter, thousands of devotees celebrated their Annual SINULOG Festival theme.

XCCA opens Cinemagis 7

Promoting peace in Mindanao.

Dealing with a traumatic past.Strife for freedom. Bullying in school. Defying religious and cultural prejudices.

These elements have converged, assembling the captivating menu of digital short films for the seventh installment of Cinemagis festival under the banner of Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) of Xavier University.

XCCA director Hobart Savior has expressed his delight and gratitude for the development of filmmaking in Northern Mindanao through Cinemagis which serves as a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talents and stories.

Cinemagis continues to grow in terms of the number of participating filmmakers and its audience reach.

Running on January 21-24 at the XU Little Theater and SM Cagayan de Oro Cinemas 3 and 4, the event presents 4 professional entries, 9 student films and the criticallyacclaimed films of the award-winning director Brilliante Mendoza.

From past conflicts to present issues In the professional category, each entry deals with a morally-baffling theme.

Set in Maguindanao at the height of conflict between the Philippine military forces and Moro rebels in 2008, “The End of War” by Joeromer Bacus chronicles the struggles of a

family stuck in crossfire “they never wanted to be a part of.”

“May Bituin Din sa Umaga” by John Solomon T. Legara takes the audience to a modern take on the colonization in the Philippines and the nation’s strife for freedom. The protagonist of the story named Bituin Maglaya represents the Philippine resilience and dignity, and the film follows Bituin’s journey of finding her heroes or “lucky stars.”

Adrian Rey Banaag Manapil’s “Bagabag” (Apprehension) displays a suspense story about an accounting professor Grasya who is trying to forget her traumatic past while her friendship to Leonor is being tested.

“She [Leonor] entrusted her daughter Yzel to Grasya with a promise to send her financial assistance while she is working abroad—until an accident happened while Yzel was playing,” the film’s excerpt reads.

Completing the list of films from the professional category is “Ang Lihim ni Natividad” (The Secret of Natividad) by Jasmine Limas.

During the 4 th Cinemagis Film Festival, Limas’ “Carmen” won the Best Student Short Film and it had its international debut at the Yerba Buena Arts Center in San Francisco, California, USA. From bullying to defying stereotypes On the other hand, the student films

this year offer appealing storylines as much as the aforementioned entries.

“En Pace” (In Peace) by Orpheus Nery takes us to a journey of a man who met a mysterious woman who seems to fill his void after the unexpected death of his wife.

“He is having fun when he sees people afraid of him but one nightmare will change his life and perspectives,” teases the excerpt of “The Bully has Awakened” by Harold A. Villegas, a Development Communication student at XU. This short film follows a transformational story of Ruben who is a bully yet he contends with making himself a better man.

“Abansada sa Hangin” by Marvelous J. Bencio from Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) simply describes his film as “about promoting peace in Mindanao.”

Brian Adam Salvador Anay’s “Tingki” chronicles the story of a young and aspiring ballerina “who has been leading a ‘jacketed life’ as a Muslim and who finally decides to fight for her dreams in dancing despite facing societal reprisals because of her religion.”

“A love story between Gab, a college student who supports abortion and Vanessa, a Subanen who is devoted to her conservative beliefs,” this is the storyline of “Grasya” by Geffel Lou A. Rodrigora. Opposing beliefs will test their love as they go

through some dramatic encounters.

“Across the Universe,” a film

by Megan Louise C. Hernandez is about “the choices we make in our lives and how we should deal with them.”

“Feeling Loved” by Greanne Mendoza is something the youth can relate to with the subject on the “acceptance in social media.” It is a movie about wanting to be “in” on the new media. In desperation, the main character spreads lies about his life and goes the extra mile just to keep the ‘likes’ going.

Murder and intrigues linger in the film of Lucky E.dela Rosa’s “Emosyon” (Emotion) and it follows the tousled relationship of the characters Victor and Jewel.

Cinemagis serves as a springboard for filmmakers from Region 10 to showcase their stories. Since its inception in 2009, a number of films have already gone to other national independent film festivals and even in the international scene.

hink a minute…Did you know that the average person puts only 25% of his energy and ability into his work? That means those who use 50% of their ability stand out from the rest. So the very few who actually give their full 100% of strength and smarts to their work become the most successful of all. Many people want the greener grass, but they don’t want to pay the higher water bill to get it!

“No person has ever slept his way to success, since he just sleeps through his best opportunities.” While we’re sleeping, our talents and abilities sleep with us.

The only way to smell sweet success is to wake up, so you can work up the ladder to where you want to be.

Then after you’ve reached the level of success you want, work is the only way you can stay there to keep enjoying it. Remember, nothing just happens by itself; somebody has to do the work to make

it happen. The great music composers like Beethoven and Mozart did not sit around waiting to get inspired before they started working. They got inspired because they were already working at it.

But it’s not enough to work hard. An important question we need to ask ourselves is what are we working for? We can’t just work hard, we also have to work smart. Don’t get ripped off by working your whole life for something that doesn’t give you real quality of life. We need to be smart and get the best deal we can for our life of work.

Some people work hard all their lives and become rich, but inside they’re still very poor and unhappy. They’re u ns at i s f i e d and e mpt y because they didn’t work smart for the right things.

umbling oil prices and We s t e r n e c o n o m i c sanctions have caused the Russian ruble to crash – with dramatic consequences for Russia’s neighbors and trade partners.

The Euro remains on a dramatic six years low.

For many Russian retailers, Christmas season sales were particularly good in 2014. “In December, we had a flood of Belarusians in the area around Smolensk,” said Julia Sotova from the “M.Video” electronics chain.

Customers from Belarus bought whatever they could carry. Due to the crash of the Russian ruble, they suddenly found themselves with enormous purchasing power. Inflation? Deflation?

Auto retailers in border regions reported equally high sales. A Volkswagen showroom in Smolensk that previously sold three cars a month to customers from Belarus began selling 10 per week. But the government in Minsk has now clamped down on the shopping spree by strongly devaluing the Belarusian rubel. Let’s face it, there is a certain dependence to Russia. In Eastern Europe,

the Caucasus, and Central Asia, practically all the former Soviet republics have close economic ties to Russia. Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan might be independent politically, but not economically. Only the three Baltic states have followed their own paths into the Europan Union. The Caucasus republic of Georgia has been trying since the Russo-Georgian conflict of 2008 to distance itself as far as possible from Moscow.

Russia pushes for economic integration wherever it can. The customs union with Kazakhstan and Belarus gave way at the turn of the year to the Eurasian Economic Union, of which Armenia is also a member. But it got off to an inauspicious start. Due to the weak ruble, Armenian exports of manufactured goods to Russia fell by 6.3 percent, according to the “Aikakan Schamanak” newspaper from Yerevan.

Moscow’s Academy of Sciences maintains a more opt imist ic vie w of t he situation. “The ruble crash is not affecting exports to Russia,” said Asa Migranjan, economic expert with a focus on CIS states. Armenian manufacturing, “especially in the areas of jewelry and mechanical engineering has Russian roots, namely, Russian capital,” she told DW. She said that the current turbulence within an integrated economic area would quickly neutralize itself.

Undeniably dramatic, however, are the effects of the ruble crisis on the labor market. Casual laborers and construction workers in Russia’s major cities tend to come from Central Asian nations. Around 5 million people from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan work at Russian building sites, markets and restaurants. With the start of the new year, however, up to 70 percent of these guest workers were told to stay home, said Konstantin Romodanowskij, head of the Russian immigration authority. The weak ruble

and the recession in Russia have decimated the market for unskilled workers.

So, let me ask: Who will pay for Russia’s mistakes? The income from these migrant workers is now missing in Central Asia. Money transfers from Russsia make up around a third of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Kyrgyzstan; in Tajikistan, wages from migrant workers account for half of GDP, according to the World Bank. Many families in Central Asia have suddenly been left with no income. “There are not many alternative job markets for migrant workers from Central Asia, mainly because of the language problem,” said Peer Teschendorf, head of the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s office in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Here, to o, it’s cle ar just how dependent on Russia many former Soviet countries still are. Only the oil producing countries of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have been able to fend off the worst of the crisis – but just barely. Globe leverages on cloud to bring better customer experience for local banks The Philippine financial services industry, particularly its local banking sector, can seamlessly serve customers by adopting the latest capabilities in information and communications technologies or ICT, most particularly through cloud computing, according to a high-ranking Globe official.

“It is an inevitable fact that we as customers, whether in the retail or corporate setting, are going digital, by the way we want to be engaged, from various social media platforms to the mobile applications to access content, which are resident in the cloud. This is also true with the way we now do banking transactions,” said Globe Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer for International and Business Markets Gil Genio.

Speaking at a recent banking convention where Globe Telecom was a thought-leadership sponsor, Genio expounded on the topic of “Building a Strong Technology Platform,” pointing out that businesses have to follow the digital lifestyle which their customers are now embracing.

“All current customer experience through a mobile phone, or what one does over the internet, is facilitated because there is a cloud infrastructure behind it – for instance, when we do mobile banking. No doubt, without us probably realizing it, we as bank customers are placing information through various cloud infrastructures. However, we need to place necessary platforms in order to properly secure those bits of data.

spending in setting up various kinds of clouds for banks, citing a 2014 Deloitte study on the right balance and trade-offs between cost and growth: “Similar to a telecommunications company such as Globe, the cost of infrastructure goes up every year, thus we have to keep on investing. From a cost perspective, it is a matter of transitioning from trying to do everything by yourself and changing the cost model, from a capital expenditure-driven one to something like ‘pay-as-you-go.’

As an example, he pointed out that smaller financial institutions such as rural banks are more open to use the cloud.

In considering the cloud, a group of 10 rural banks can save on costs from 20 to 25% if they employ what is called a “community cloud,” a shared infrastruc-

ture among several organizations where some of the cost savings potential of cloud computing are realized. In terms of security levels, it requires a member organization to impose additional security measures as necessary. This is in contrast with a cheaper public cloud where there are more users but limited control over the cloud environment, or with a private cloud for individual organizations or group of companies where owners have complete jurisdiction, but can be more expensive to put up.

Genio disclosed that banks can start adopting cloud computing with basic steps such as considering colocation in the Globe data centers. Another alternative is to subscribe to Globe IT Enabled Services’ Infrastructure-as-a-Service, both of which are “evidently better options

than buying new equipment.” According to him, forward-thinking banks can also maximize their cloud by harnessing the practice of harvesting information through big data and processing those through analytics, which can be used to study and understand customers.

In summary, the Globe EVP and COO pointed out that the capability of a cloud provider such as Globe can help IT companies invest in necessary secure infrastructure. At the end of the day, he said, it is all about “pursuing opportunities while simultaneously trying to limit risks, and getting up to scale and rationalizing operations.”
