hink a minute…Can you imagine life without machines? If we didn’t have cars, buses, telephones or radios, we’d be lost without these basic machines we use every day. But a machine only helps your life if you know how to use it. It reminds me of the old chief from the jungle who came to town because he was asked to make a speech on the radio. The old guy had never been in a radio studio or seen modern gadgets like a microphone before. So when the radio host gave him the microphone, this jungle chief grabbed it and put it up to his EAR to give his speech!

Machines and gadgets are great—if you know how to use them correctly.

Do you know the most sophisticated, advanced machine ever invented? It’s you and me! The human machine. In fact, the more that scientists and doctors discover about the human body and brain, the more they learn what an amazing

computer and machine we human beings are. Our mind, body, emotions, and will make up the total person that we are. You see, the only one who knows everything about how the human machine works correctly is the One Who designed and invented us. God made us differently from all the other animals which have no ability to choose in their lives. They do everything simply by instinct.

But we are free to think with our mind and conscience to make our own choices how we live. God did not make us robots that He controls and forces to live the right way.

Sadly, since we’ve all chosen to be stubborn and self-centered, we’ve used our freedom wrongly. We even think we know better than our Maker and Inventor what will make us happy. We’ve all chosen to live our own way, instead of using our bodies and minds the way God hurst/PAGE 6

Do you understand what I mean?

FINISH YOUR URGENT TASK FOR THE FIRST HOUR OF THE DAY. Have you ever felt that you need to finish the URGENT task so you want to get this over with?

So there is a tendency that you’ve been working for it for 2 to 3 hours but nothing seems to be happening.

The more you feel stressed realizing that the person who will help you to fulfill the task is not available; worst never returns your call and text. So you’re stuck with the task the whole day.

What I usually do is I set a timer in front of me and set it for an hour, then I start working on the given time.

If nothing happens, I move on to the important matters of the day which may not be

I personally set aside a specific amount of time to also work on the important things and once the time is up, then I go back to the urgent and unfinished task for the first hour.

umbling oil prices and We s t e r n e c o n o m i c sanctions have caused the Russian ruble to crash – with dramatic consequences for Russia’s neighbors and trade partners.

The Euro remains on a dramatic six years low.

For many Russian retailers, Christmas season sales were particularly good in 2014. “In December, we had a flood of Belarusians in the area around Smolensk,” said Julia Sotova from the “M.Video” electronics chain.

Customers from Belarus bought whatever they could carry. Due to the crash of the Russian ruble, they suddenly found themselves with enormous purchasing power. Inflation? Deflation?

Auto retailers in border regions reported equally high sales. A Volkswagen showroom in Smolensk that previously sold three cars a month to customers from Belarus began selling 10 per week. But the government in Minsk has now clamped down on the shopping spree by strongly devaluing the Belarusian rubel. Let’s face it, there is a certain dependence to Russia. In Eastern Europe,

the Caucasus, and Central Asia, practically all the former Soviet republics have close economic ties to Russia. Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan might be independent politically, but not economically. Only the three Baltic states have followed their own paths into the Europan Union. The Caucasus republic of Georgia has been trying since the Russo-Georgian conflict of 2008 to distance itself as far as possible from Moscow.

Russia pushes for economic integration wherever it can. The customs union with Kazakhstan and Belarus gave way at the turn of the year to the Eurasian Economic Union, of which Armenia is also a member. But it got off to an inauspicious start. Due to the weak ruble, Armenian exports of manufactured goods to Russia fell by 6.3 percent, according to the “Aikakan Schamanak” newspaper from Yerevan.

Moscow’s Academy of Sciences maintains a more opt imist ic vie w of t he situation. “The ruble crash is not affecting exports to Russia,” said Asa Migranjan, economic expert with a focus on CIS states. Armenian manufacturing, “especially in the areas of jewelry and mechanical engineering has Russian roots, namely, Russian capital,” she told DW. She said that the current turbulence within an integrated economic area would quickly neutralize itself.

Undeniably dramatic, however, are the effects of the ruble crisis on the labor market. Casual laborers and construction workers in Russia’s major cities tend to come from Central Asian nations. Around 5 million people from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan work at Russian building sites, markets and restaurants. With the start of the new year, however, up to 70 percent of these guest workers were told to stay home, said Konstantin Romodanowskij, head of the Russian immigration authority. The weak ruble

and the recession in Russia have decimated the market for unskilled workers.

So, let me ask: Who will pay for Russia’s mistakes? The income from these migrant workers is now missing in Central Asia. Money transfers from Russsia make up around a third of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Kyrgyzstan; in Tajikistan, wages from migrant workers account for half of GDP, according to the World Bank. Many families in Central Asia have suddenly been left with no income. “There are not many alternative job markets for migrant workers from Central Asia, mainly because of the language problem,” said Peer Teschendorf, head of the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s office in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Here, to o, it’s cle ar just how dependent on Russia many former Soviet countries still are. Only the oil producing countries of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have been able to fend off the worst of the crisis – but just barely. 6 BSP to issue commemorative coins for Papal visit The

Good news to all coin collectors!

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced the issuance of limited edition 50-piso and 500-piso papal coins to commemorate the state and pastoral visit of Pope Francis.

Both coins are legal tender and will be sold for P100.00 and P1,000.00, re sp e c t ively, to cove r production, packaging and other costs. The coins are minted under a licensing agreement with the Vatican.

The 50-piso C ommemorat ive C oin for Pope Francis is made of Nickel Brass while the 500-piso is made of Nordic Gold with gold plating. On the obverse, both coins feature the portrait of Pope Francis and the following markings: “Republika ng Pilipinas,” “Pope Francis,” signature of Pope Francis, the denomination, yearmark “2015” and BSP mint mark.

On the reverse, both coins contains the BSP seal and the markings “Papal Visit/Philippines,” the date

of visit “January 15-19, 2015,” logo of the Papal Visit 2015, and mini letters “Mercy and Compassion.”

The 50-Piso and 500Piso coins will be available beginning the last week of January 2015.

However, the coins are not available over the counter. To reserve, forms may be downloaded from the BSP website, www. bsp.gov.ph, and sent to papalcoins@bsp.gov.ph.

Wait for a confirmation e-mail with the date when you can pay for and pick up the coins at the BSP. Reservation forms may

be submitted only until the end of June 2015.

As a matter of policy, the BSP commemorates significant events in the country’s history through t he mint ing of coins, medals or overprints on our banknotes.

Papal commemorative coins were also issued for the 1970 visit of Pope Paul VI, and for the 1981 and 1995 papal visits of Pope John Paul II. Meanwhile, 1,000-Piso silver and 10,000-Piso gold Papal commemorative coins will also be available in May 2015.

The Pasungko Festival in Misamis Occidental has been declared first accredited activity for Visit the Philippines Year 2015 in Northern Mindanao.

Aimed at promoting the islands of the Philippines to the world including festivals and events, among others, Department of Tourism (DOT)

regional director Catalino E. Chan III said that the Pasungko Festival in Misamis Occidental was the first to be accredited for Visit the Philippines Year 2015 in Northern Mindanao.

Celebrated in November, Pasungko is already enlisted in the website visitph2015.com where international and local

tourists can see and participate.

Milo Oropesa, Promotions Specialist of the Tourism Promotions Board said that Visit the Philippines year 2015 is not meant to replace “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” but to refresh it. It is a microsite inside the “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” website to serve as directory to everything the Philippines has to offer.

All stakeholders, from event organizers to tour agencies, are encouraged to go to visitph2015. com and register and promote their activities to an international audience.

Visit the Philippines Year 2015 is a Philippine Tourism tactical campaign based on development, organization, implementation, and promotion of a year round of activities in 2015 that compels

tourists to proactively participate in the events. This includes fiestas, sport events, aim to highlight strategic products, diving, shop and dining.

There are five themes for this year namely music and arts, entertainment, lifestyle, sports and eco-tourism, history and culture.

Events will be organized in partnership with local government units, private sector and relevant alliances.

Further, according to Oropesa, the recent upgrade

of the country’s aviation safety rating to category 1 will also be a boost to tourism not only for international flights but for domestic as well.

This is not only to promote Philippines as tourist destination, but also business avenues and cultural experiences with the purpose to improve international and domestic arrivals.

People in many neighboring countries are beginning to feel that they are paying the price for Russia’s political escapades and mistakes. The economic dependence on the former

hegemonic power is (once again) becoming an issue.

It’s not just politicians in Central Asia and the Caucasus who are asking themselves how long the recession in Russia will go on. “Even when the sanctions are lifted and oil prices rise, it’s the lack of investment that will continue to hurt the Russian economy,” said Sergeij Aleksashenko. He once ser ved as Russia’s deputy finance minister and deputy head of its central bank.

Today, he is much in demand as an expert on macroeconomic issues. In an interview with German International Television, he said that the crisis is neither

cyclical, nor the result of external factors. In his view, the downturn is homemade – caused by a lack of political reform. “In my opinion, this crisis will go on for quite some time,” he said.

If Aleksaschenko is right, the Russian economic crisis could stir up social tensions which, particularly in Central Asia, could lead to political unrest. Becoming a leader takes a lot of courage and skills especially in influencing others, and in order to be influential, he must be effective In a book authored by an American educator Steven R. Covey, he enumerated seven habits that an aspiring leader should possessed in order to be effective.

First is to be proactive or the ability to control a situation through making things happen or preparing for possible future problems.

Goal setting is also a way to be proactive. This is a process of turning one’s vision or plan into real action. It is focused on acquisition of knowledge and helps in organizing time and resources.

Beginning with end in mind is also a habit that one should have. This is through envisioning a mission and vision. Best way for this is to set mission and vision statements that serve as a guide and a direction for

an organization.

Putting first things first is also another habit of highly effective person.

Time management is a key to this habit. In addition also is through setting priorities.

This could be done through doing the things that should be done first before the other.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood. This is done through active listening and understanding the experiences of others.

In this way, it is not hard for an aspiring leader to catch the ears of people.

Think win-win and synergize are the fifth and sixth habit. The first is referred as win-win negotiation or the fair compromise. This aims to find a solution that is acceptable to both parties, and leaves both parties feeling that they have won.

Synergizing, on the other hand, is through working together to produce best results.

Sharpening the saw is the seventh habit, and this is through evaluating the direction where a person himself is going and seeing to it that he is progressing.

Through time, more skills will be adopted and habits will be embodied.

In these, a person will be more effective, as a leader and a person, at large.

he region’s largest amusement park operator has started work on its bid to put Northern Mindanao in the global tourism map.

D u b b e d t h e “S e v e n Seas Waterpark & Resort,” the 5-hectare complex in B ar ang ay B ar r a , O p ol, M i s a m i s O r i e nt a l w i l l definitely put Region X in the bucket list of adventure tourists all over the world once it is completed in 2016.

The theme park’s major attractions include a 2,500 square meter (sq.m.) water combo wave pool; 1,000 s q . m . Aq u a P l ay h o u s e Pool; 1,100 sq.m. “Slow R i v e r R i d e” ; 1 2 m e t e r high water slide towers and splash pools; a 1,200 sq.m. Events Tent and 300 sq.m. Children’s Pool.

“Our location gives us a definite advantage over count r ies wit h simi lar, existing attractions like China, Korea, Japan and the ASEAN,” said Engr.

Elpidio M. Paras, chairman o f U C - 1 C o r p o r at i o n , the holding company of t h e Pa r a s f a m i l y w i t h interests in cable television, telecommunications, business process outsourcing and eco-adventure tourism.

“Water parks in these areas usually operate only 3-4 months in a year compared to all year round for Seven Seas,” he noted.

“C omp are d to t heir 25 percent availability, we have 75 percent, which would allow more guests to visit us, the weather permitting.”

The latest venture is just the latest in a growing list of adventure tourism dest i nat i ons and f i r ms pioneered by the group: Dahilayan Adventure Park, home to Asia’s longest dual zipline and a plethora of other unique rides such as Drop Zone and the Flying Lizard at Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon; Great White Water Tours, one of the city’s pione er ing w hite water rafting outfitters; the first Duck Tour in the Philippines; and Paras Beach Resort in nearby Camiguin island, which offers scuba diving, snorkeling, banana boat and jet skiing.

Although it is primarily aimed at the local market, Seven Seas has the potential to become a major player in the Asian amusement water park industry which now boasts of global standard destinations such as Sunway Lagoon in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia; Adventure Cove Waterpark; Zhuhai Chime-Long Ocean Kingdom in Hengqin, Zhuhai, People’s Republic of China, part of the ChimeLong International Ocean Resort vying to become the “Orlando of China;” and Waterbom Bali and Jakarta, Park and Spa in Tuban, Bali and Jakarta, Indonesia.

patterns); two-man rafting slide; Multi-Platform Aqua Playhouse; Kid’s slides and spray cannons and Lily Pad Obstacle Course for the first phase; and the multirider Abyss Tornado Ride; Aqualoop/body slide (the only near vertical looping waterslide); and Whizzard 3-lane Mat Racing Slide for the second phase.

Initially designed to accommodate 200,000 g u e st s an nu a l ly, S e ve n Seas has the capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 guests daily which should make it a primary spark plug to fire up tourism in Northern Mindanao.

UC-1 is optimistic Seven Seas can easily breach this volume of guests since it’s optimally situated to tap into its target domestic and international markets through the existing and emerging infrastructure

of the region.

The Laguindingan Airport is a mere 30-minutes drive away and is already programmed for expansion as an international standard facility. Even before the expansion gets underway, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is already expecting chartered flights of Korean tourists to start arriving this year.

By land, the park is just 1.8 kilometers (kms.) to the Bulua West Bound Terminal which is the commuter hub for land based buses and vans plying routes to Lanao, Misamis Occidental and Western Mindanao. From Opol poblacion to Barra is a mere 2.5 kms.

The faci lity its elf is directly linked to the newly opened four lane West Coastal Highway by a 300 meter access road, and sea travelers coming

from Camiguin and the Visayas can take a relatively t r a f f i c f re e 3 0 - m i nut e ride through this artery upon disembarking at the Cagayan de Oro Port at Macabalan.

Thus, guests have the option of hopping on a plane from Manila or a ferry from Cebu, Camiguin or Bacolod/Iloilo and back ag ai n t a k i ng t he ni g ht voyages or night flights for a day’s fun at Seven Seas.

However, the planners are already looking beyond the day trips to longer weekend sojourns in the near future which would give guests a comprehensive Adventure Package including Dahilayan Adve ntu re Park , Gre at White Water Tours, Paras Beach Resort and Seven Seas.
