he Cagayan de Oro City Government in tandem with Kagayanon International and the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Council, City Tourism Office and City Historical and Cultural Commission will relaunch today, February 27, 2016, the historic Duaw Kagay-an Park.

History & Legend of the Birhen sa Kota of Cagayan de Oro The Orden de Agustinos Recoletos priests introduced the Virgin of the Holy Rosary (Birhen sa Santo Rosaryo) to the early Kagay-anons when the city was but a settlement where now stands Gaston Park.

In 1622, Christianity was first introduced in the first Kagay-anon settlement in Himolugan, located in a promontory along the Cagayan River (present day Taguanao) next to where now stands the Pelaez bridge.

Through the initiative of Fray Agustin de San Pedro, this early mission was moved to the site of the present St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral.

In 1626, a wooden

palisade or kota was erected on the eastern side beneath the church and the convent as a protection against the constant depredations of raiders from distant Sultanates who used to raid the village of Cagaiang. * The people used to shelter here whenever the village was under attack.

The statue of the Virgin of the Holy Rosary was always with them to whom they prayed to protect the people during times of danger.

The legend relates how the villagers were thrown into an uproar one day as boat loads of raiders were espied coming in from

downriver. However, just as quickly, the people saw the boats turn around and beat a hasty retreat.

Later, the villagers

Thus, the statue came to be known as “Ang Birhen sa Kota” (Our Lady of the Walls). ** During the time of the American occupation, the image was brought inside the Cathedral and was venerated every Saturday, a practice which came to be known as “Sabadohan”.

The St. Agustin Cathedral has been destroyed four times, including the Second World War when it was bombarded by the Americans. However,

the image of the Birhen sa Kota, the icon of St. Agustin and the Mission Cross dating back to the first village remained unscathed.

Besides these incidents, many miracles have been attributed to the Birhen sa Kota.

At the end of the Second World War, Archbishop Santiago Hayes, SJ, DD, had the image of the Birhen sa Kota brought to the San Jose de Mindanao Seminary in Barangay Camaman-an.

The Origin of the Image of the Birhen sa Kota sa Cagayan de Oro From its head down to its feet, the Birhen sa Kota sa Cagayan (as it was originally known) is an exact replica of the icon of the Virgin of the Holy Rosary.

The old pedestal was intentionally replaced despite its being a part of the original artifact, and a new one made, so it could be inscribed with the words “Milagrosang Pagpakita sa Mahal nga Birhen” (Miraculous Apparition of Our Lady) before 1730.

The image of the Blessed Virgin is dressed in white with clouds around here feet, apparently depicting how she was seen during her apparition as floating above the kota.

Below the kota, the Lambago (scientific name – Hibiscus tiliaceus) trees that used to thrive along the Cagayan River’s banks are depicted. At the back of the image of the Blessed Virgin could be seen a more detailed picture of the Lambago tree.

Oral tradition relates how one of the old names of this place was Kalambagohan, because of the proliferation of this tree.

On the left side of the pedestal could be seen the old cathedral made of stone. Its belfry was situated on the left and its roof was made of cogon grass.

On the right side

of the pedestal the purong/pandong of the Manobo Lumads is illustrated. This was used by their royal princesses, and ordinary women, for rituals and dances during festivities.

A Gong could also be observed, which the Manobos used for making music, calling people to gatherings and other ceremonies and rituals.

On the back of the pedestal could be seen clay jars and other clay ceramic pots which could have been one of the means of livelihood of the residents even before the coming of the Spanish friars in Himologan (present day Taguanao).

The event was called DUAW sa KAGAYAN and has since been observed every two years, alternating with the TAPOK in the U.S. or Canada where Kagayanons gather to celebrate their city and origins.

for the creation of the seminal Duaw Kagay-an and Tapok events which gather overseas Kagayanons alternatively every two years.

“Within a year, walkways were paved and the park was turned into a beautiful garden with benches,” Gaane recalled.

However, when Magtajas was no longer the mayor, Duaw Park was neglected. Mayor Constantino Jaraula promised to restore Duaw Park but was never able to do it. During Vicente Emano’s last term as mayor, the Duaw park monument was washed away by the rampaging floodwaters of Tropical Storm Sendong and the whole park destroyed and not restored.

“We the Kagayanons abroad would like to see Mayor Moreno restore the park with the help of Congressmen Rufus Rodriguez and Klarex Uy,” wrote Gaane following the inauguration of Mayor Moreno in June 30, 2013.

“We hope the park will be restored before May 2014 because that will be the month that we, the Kagay-anons abroad plan to make another DUAW sa KAGAYAN.” Mr. Gaane passed away January 14 this year and the participants will observe a minute of silence in honor of the Kagay-anon who was responsible for keeping overseas Kagay-anons in touch with their native city.

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

The feast always occurs one week after the similar Byzantine celebration of the Protection of the Mother of God, which most Eastern Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics celebrate on October 1st in memory of a 10th-century military victory which protected Constantinople against invasion after a reported Marian apparition.

Pope Leo XIII was particularly devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary, producing 11 encyclicals on the subject of this feast and its importance in the course of his long pontificate.

In the first of them, 1883's “Supremi Apostolatus Officio,” he echoed the words of the oldest known Marian prayer (known in the Latin tradition as the Sub Tuum Praesidium), when he wrote, “It has always been the habit of

Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary.”

“This devotion, so great and so confident, to the august Queen of Heaven,” Pope Leo continued, “has never shone forth with such brilliancy as when the militant Church of God has seemed to be endangered by the violence of heresy … or by an intolerable moral corruption, or by the attacks of powerful enemies.” Foremost among such “attacks” was the battle of Lepanto, a perilous and decisive moment in European and world history.

(Editor’s Note: Perhaps it was a coincidence that the Blessed Lady of the Rosary appeared when the Christian village of Cagaiang was similarly threatened like the Christians during the rise of the Turkish Ottoman Empire and Islam that led to her veneration?)

Troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire had invaded and occupied the Byzantine empire by 1453, bringing a large portion of the increasingly divided Christian world under a version of Islamic law. For the next hundred years, the Turks expanded their empire westward on land, and asserted their naval power in the Mediterranean.

In 1565 they attacked Malta, envisioning an eventual invasion of

Rome. Though repelled at Malta, the Turks captured Cyprus in the fall of 1570.

The next year, three Catholic powers on the continent – Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States - formed an alliance called the Holy League, to defend their Christian civilization

against Turkish invasion.

Its fleets sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of Greece on October 7, 1571.

In 2008, Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, SJ, DD and the Museo de

In October 7, 2013, the Feast Day of the Birhen sa Kota of Cagayan de Oro was restored, along with the Sabadohan Debosyon (Saturday Devotion) on October 19, 2013.

To all the mother’s out there… Have you ever been on a vacation with your friends?

Once a year, Me and my Mommy friends go on a short trip just for the weekend. Usually there are six of us. Me, Yen, Vicky, Aimee, Issa and Kate. But for this year’s trip, Issa wasn’t able to join us last minute.

We usually purchase our tickets months in advance and schedule it with the dads in advance as well. The dads are in-charge of the kids while the moms are on vacation. We’re all very lucky that we have the best husbands who allow us to have fun for the weekend with our friends.

I’m usually the one incharge with the itinerary because according to them, I’m good and

Moms Need Vacations Too efficient when it comes to where to go, where to shop, where to eat and managing time. I love planning vacations so I am always happy to plan everything.

Vicky on the other hand is in-charge with the tickets, web-check in, seat purchases and baggage allowance purchases. We all stay at my place whenever we’re in Manila so we already save a lot from hotel accommodations and transportation and have more budget for shopping.

When going on a vacation with your friends, there should be one or two who is/ are willing to do the planning to maximize your trip.

So, we did a lot of eating. Straight from the airport, we had lunch at Makati ShangriLa Hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Shang Palace.

We enjoyed their allyou-can-eat unlimited dim sum, soup, noodles, rice, appetizers, dessert and one main course. It was worth it! The food is always good at Shang Palace and the ambience is very classy and relaxing.

Dinner was at Dusit Hotel’s Japanese restaurant, UMU. We also dined at Barcino. It’s a Spanish restaurant. They serve really good Paella there.

For our last night in Manila, we had dinner buffet at NIU at SM Aura Premier. They serve a wide selection of food that ranges from Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean, Chinese, French, Filipino and so on. Drinks are unlimited as well.

Then, on our last day in Manila, before going to the airport, we all had a quick breakfast at Wildflour Cafe + Bakery.

This laid-back place with very good food is a must visit.

What’s a vacation without shopping? We all did a lot of shopping.

We dropped by S&R and bought lots of goodies to bring home for the kids and some things for the home.

For me, I shopped for a few clothes for myself, my husband and my son.

I also dropped by La Mer at Rustan’s Makati to restock my beauty musthaves. Had my much needed visit to Belo for my facial and Power Peel (I had my alone time

there and I felt so relaxed right after). That’s it!

So much fun, happiness and good vibes in one weekend! Clean fun is always better! So, choose your friends carefully.

I believe that once a year, it’s important for moms to take a short vacation with their friends. With all the mommy duties, we all need a little me time or alone time to relax, let go a little and unwind from all the work.

Not to think about cleaning, early wakeups, what food to serve, laundry, kids’ school assignments and so on.

You only have yourself to care for when you’re on vacation. It’s a good way to recharge and have some energy boost so when you go back home, you are back with so much energy to take care of your family.

Always take care of yourself and love yourself so you will overflow with so much happiness and share it with your loved ones effortlessly.

The Department of Trade and Industry Misamis Oriental Provincial Office seeks to continue it sterling performance in 2015 to the current year and beyond.

Foremost among its most notable accomplishments for 2015 were in the City Municipalities and Cities Index (CMCI) ratings where it sought to put both Misamis Oriental and its capital city of Cagayan de Oro in the Top 10 of their

respective categories.

The CMCI rated Misamis Oriental as the 2nd Most Competitive Province in the country while Cagayan de Oro ranked sixth among the Highly Urbanized Cities evaluated.

Under the Shared Services Facility (SSF) program where industries are introduced to new appropriate technologies through the provision of production equipment, its

SSF to the Linabu Agrarian Multi-Purpose Cooperative was cited as the SSF with the Most “Ramdam” effect.

In Business Development, Misamis Oriental not only became the first operational Negosyo Center nationwide, but reaped another accolade as the Negosyo Center with the most number of trainings conducted (175) for 2015 Nationwide.

In fact of all targets set by the office itself for 2015, it attained its goal in virtually all categories, exceeding 10 of the 12 metrics.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) development and promotion remained high in the unit’s agenda, resulting in PhP 434-million of domestic sales generated; 1,106 MSMEs assisted (vs. 950 target or 116% actual); 33 SSFs were established (vs.

28 target or 118% actual); 8,260 jobs generated (vs. 8,252 target), and 24 MSMEs availed of loans (vs. 11 target, or 218% actual).

In addition, the Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center was established and operationalized in the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) fulfilling the need for a research and development facility to catalyze industry development in the processed food sector.

On top of all these, the provincial office also generated PhP 1.3-million in additional support from external support to strengthen and leverage its partnerships with government agencies, private organizations and other development partners.

Consumer welfare and development also got an equal share of attention in 2015, with the office resolving 100% of all consumer complaints filed within the prescribed time (vs. 78% target, or 128% actual). A total of 921 firms were monitored (vs. 885 target, or 104% actual) and 100% of all firms with violations were penalized within the prescribed time

To further intensify consumer advocacy and fair trade law enforcement, the provincial office partnered with relevant private and government agencies.

Seventeen government and private organizations took part in consumer-oriented activities; 36 consumer forums conducted with a total of 2,917 participants.

No wonder, perhaps, that DTI Misamis Oriental garnered a 99.61% Client Satisfactory Rating (vs. a target of 90%) for 2015.

Despite attaining laurels in the national stage and meeting all its targets for the year, this has not precluded the top performing unit from setting the bar high for 2016.

“This year, we intend to further improve on our delivery of services to

SME’s”, Dir. Pabillore said.

“We are now introducing a ladderized training module for our SME training sessions.

Under this system, an SME wishing to enroll will first be assessed, and then advised on where best to start in the ladderized modules. With this, the office hopes to further improve the competencies and efficiencies of SMEs in Misamis Oriental.

DTI Misamis Oriental also has plans to put in place a comprehensive database for its Cagayan de Oro Negosyo Center which will be shared with all the other negosyo centers in the province.

“With the database in place, we can better serve our clientele and further improve our delivery of services.” Dir. Pabillore said. (DTI Region X Office)

ome 300 members of the Misamis Oriental Filipino –Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MOFCCCII) celebrated their annual Thanksgiving and Lunar New Year Party with their families last Feb. 20, 2016 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant & Convention Center at Limketkai Center.

“This is a traditional gathering of our members and their loved ones by which we give thanksgiving for the graces and blessings received in the previous year as well as our fellowship for the Lunar New Year,” said Greg Marten G. Lao, MOFCCCII president.

The joyous occasion was spiced by another palabas by students from Oro Christian Grace School who performed the traditional Lion Dance for good luck, traditional Dagu drum performance and traditional Chinese ditties. Also guesting was the XU C9 Dance Troupe from Xavier UniversityAteneo de Cagayan.

The “greens” (qing) are tied together with a red envelope containing money and may also include auspicious fruits like oranges. In Chinese cai (to pluck) also sounds like the Chinese words for “vegetable” and “fortune.”

The lion will dance and approach the “green” and “red envelope” like a curious cat, to “eat the green” and “spit” it out but keep the “red envelope” which is the reward for the lion thanksgiving//PAGE 7
