ulti-dimensional artist Nicolas P. Aca, Jr. has opened his first solo exhibit at Capitol University’s Museum of 3 Cultures with a gallery featuring portraits of Cagayan de Oro’s past and present city schools division superintendents.

Dubbed “HULAGWAY”(or Picture in Bisaya), the exhibit was officially opened last 16 February 2018 with friends and luminaries in the academic, arts and culture fields in attendance. It will run until the end of the month.

According to the

gallery notes written by Kristian Ian Sulmayor, the exhibit is “a tribute for the people behind the efforts and success of our city’s educational evolution.”

42 studes qualify in first leg of 2018 MDN Journalism Awards

Suzuki Philippines celebrates milestones with growing Team Suzuki PH P

ioneer compact car distributor Suzuki Philippines (SPH) celebrates another successful year packed with strong sales performance and backto-back recognitions and ushers in another exciting year with a gathering of its growing Team Suzuki Philippines (TSP) family.

The event, held January 20 at the House Manila, Remington Hotel in Pasay City, brought together SPH executives and Suzuki car club members to celebrate the milestones the company achieved last year and welcome the opportunities 2018 brings. It was also SPH’s way of showing its gratitude for the support and loyalty of the growing TSP family, which now exceeds 4,100 active members. Suzuki’s accredited car clubs consist of Team Alto Pilipinas, Team Celerio Philippines, Swift 1.2 Philippines, Club Ertiga

Philippines, Vitara Club of the Philippines, Team Ciaz Philippines and Suzuki Jimny 4x4 Club Philippines.

More than 100 TSP Car Club members joined the thanksgiving celebration, which consisted of games, raffles and other activities aimed to strengthen the bond among car club members.

SPH supported a number of the car clubs’ activities last year. These activities included relationship-building and outreach programs that aimed to strengthen the relationship between SPH and car club members.

Team Alto Pilipinas organized membership gatherings and outreach programs, one for the Aeta community and a feeding program in Binangonan, Rizal. Team Celerio Philippines’ annual tree planting went hand-in-hand with its Aeta Livelihood Program and Christmas-in-a-Box project.

Team Ciaz Philippines’ activities last year included grand membership EBs and a fun run. The team’s fun run in Mt. Samat in March 2017 allowed Ciaz owners to enjoy the long drive and experience the flexibility and reliability of the fuel-efficient subcompact sedan.

In addition to the regular member meetings, Club Ertiga Philippines, Inc. (CEPI) held its annual summer family gettogether last June and tapped Cottolengo Filipino Orphanage as beneficiary. CEPI also had an outreach program last December at the Hundred Islands in Alaminos, Pangasinan.

Members of the Suzuki Jimny 4X4 Club Philippines organized a Mt. Balabag Trail Day for newbie off-roaders. They joined the prestigious Rainforest Challenge Philippines 2017 as Official Marshalls.

They also donated 23

personal computers and a generator to the Sitio Cuccong Elementary School in partnership with Teletech.

Meanwhile, Swift 1.2 Philippines joined last year’s JSK Fun Run and held outreach programs, including one in partnership with No One In Need organization.

The Vitara Club organized several day trips and overnight campings at the Jungle Base, Mt. Balabag, Manipo Falls and Treasure Mountain, all in Rizal, for its members and their families. The team’s activities also included a 4x4 clinic, 4x4 outdoor challenges, tree planting and an outreach Christmas party for the kids of Sitio Maysawa, Tanay, Rizal.

SSS urges individually-paying members to get Payment Reference Numbers from helpline

Cebu Pacific airlifts 396 repatriated OFWs from Kuwait Leading Philippine carrier Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB) provided airlift support for 396 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who were repatriated from Kuwait. This is the largest group of OFWs flown on a single flight from Kuwait by any airline.

Cebu Pacific flight 5J 021 departed the Kuwait International Airport at 1228am (Manila time; 7:29pm in Kuwait, Tuesday, February 20); and landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila past 9:00am today (Wednesday, February 21). In command of the humanitarian flight was Capt Mark Semon, assisted by First Officer Mark Leoven Meliton. A ten-person cabin crew was deployed to assist the OFWs during the flight, led by Lead Cabin Crew Carmencita Pimentel.

Cebu Pacific mounted a special charter flight to airlift the OFWs back to the Philippines, deploying an Airbus A330 aircraft—the largest in its fleet—to allow Philippine embassy officials in Kuwait to accommodate more OFWs. The OFWs aboard Cebu Pacific Flight 5J 021 were also provided free baggage allowance, as well as hot meals for dinner and breakfast, bottled water and coffee, for the duration of the 9 ½ hour flight.

CEB has previously announced that it would shoulder the cost of the entire charter flight, offering the airlift for free, in response to the call for assistance by the government to repatriate Filipino workers in Kuwait. Special arrangements were made with the Kuwaiti authorities since Cebu Pacific does not have regular commercial air service between Manila and Kuwait.

The Social Security System (SSS) calls on self-employed and voluntary members to contact the PRN Helpline for their Payment Reference Number (PRN), which is now a requirement in paying contributions in line with the implementation of the Real-time Posting of Contribution Payments (RTPC).

Members can contact the PRN Helpline at 920-6446 to 55 and local Toll-Free Hotline 1-80010-2255-777. Call center services are available 24 hours from Mondays to Fridays. They can also send PRN inquiries and requests via e-mail to PRNHelpline@sss.gov.ph.

Aside from SSS contact facilities, members can also visit the nearest SSS branch to get their PRNs. “We understand that some of our members particularly the self-

employed and voluntary members from far flung areas, may find it hard to register online in the My.SSS facility due to lack of access to internet facilities, while others are not accustomed to using computers and other gadgets. So this hotline will help them comply with the requirements for real-time posting,” SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said.

Dooc also reiterated that the call center hotline is also open for feedback and other SSS-related queries such as benefit claims status, contribution, registration, loan status, and SSS programs and services.

Startup Weekend Cebu Youth Edition a success Startup Weekend Cebu Youth Edition culminated last February 16 - 18, 2018 at The Grid Pad and Creative Campus, Talamban, Cebu City. The three-day ideation, mentorship, and presentation program is the 6th Startup Weekend in Cebu City and the first Youth Edition in the Philippines. The number of participants that attended were sixty (60) students aged 13 - 18 who worked with their teams to turn their ideas into a more concrete business concept and prototype during the 54-hour event.

Nobody is perfect?

Many of us believe perfectionism is a positive. You may count me in.

More often than I’d like to admit, something seemingly inconsequential will cause the same feeling to rear its head again. Something as small as accidentally squashing the makeup I was bringing my first girlfriend’s family for Christmas can tumble around in my mind for several days, accompanied by occasional voices like “How stupid!” and “You should have known better”.

Falling short of a bigger goal, even when I know achieving it would be near-impossible, can temporarily flatten me. When a former agent told me that she knew I was going to write a book someday but that the particular idea I’d pitched her didn’t suit the market, I felt deflated in a gut-punching way that went beyond disappointment. The negative drowned out the positive. “You’re never going to write a book,” my internal voice said. “You’re not good enough.”

That voice didn’t care that this directly contradicted what the agent actually said. And, up to now, I didn’t finish my first book, yet... .

That’s the thing about perfectionism. It takes no prisoners.

If I’ve struggled with perfectionism, I’m far from alone. The tendency starts young – and it’s becoming more common. Thomas Curran and Andrew Hill’s recent meta-analysis of rates of perfectionism from 1989 to 2016, the first study to compare perfectionism across generations, found significant increases among more recent undergraduates in the US, UK and Canada. In other words, the average college student last year was much more likely to have perfectionistic tendencies than a student in the 1990’s or early 2000’s.

It’s heading toward an epidemic and public health issue. It’s a great quotation from Katie Rasmussen.

“As many as two in five kids and adolescents are perfectionists,” says Katie, who researches child development and perfectionism at West Virginia University. “We’re starting to talk about how it’s

heading toward an Have My Say epidemic and public health issue.”

The rise in perfectionism doesn’t mean each generation is becoming more accomplished. It means we’re getting sicker, sadder and even undermining our own Klaus Doring potential.

Here is another great example: a perfectionist, French Claude Monet often destroyed his paintings in a temper while saying, ‘My life has been nothing but a failure’.

Perfectionism, after all, is an ultimately selfdefeating way to move through the world. It is built on an excruciating irony: making, and admitting, mistakes is a necessary part of growing and learning and being human. It also makes you better at your career and relationships and life in general. By avoiding mistakes at any cost, a perfectionist can make it harder to reach their own lofty goals.

But the drawback of perfectionism isn’t just that it holds you back from being your most successful, productive self. Perfectionistic tendencies have been linked to a laundry list of clinical issues: depression and anxiety (even in children), self-harm, social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia, obsessivecompulsive disorder, binge eating, anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, hoarding, dyspepsia, chronic headaches, and, most damning of all, even early mortality and suicide.

“It’s something that cuts across everything, in terms of psychological problems,” says Sarah Egan, a senior research fellow at the Curtin University in Perth who specialises in perfectionism, eating disorders and anxiety. doring/PAGE 6

he is also vice president of the CDO Art Guild, Inc., a commissioner of the Cagayan de Oro City Historical and Cultural Commission (Hiscom), and a member of the Solidarity in Performance Art Philippines (SIPAP).

Nic uses his genre to mainly convey social commentaries on contemporary society to the public.

His performances and craftsmanship deal with issues and advocacies on environmental protection, politics, poverty and matters of social consequence.

The artist is also renowned in the exclusive circles of the art world and has performed in a number of national and international events, among them: DJAMOE International

Performance Art Festival in Bandung, Indonesia (2017); Silingan Sine International Art Festival at Zamboanga City (2017); 7th Salaya International Documentary Film at Salaya, Thailand (February, 2017); Latent Action Performance Art Village Project at Xi’an, China (October 2016, the only artist representing the Philippines); Glimpse of Mindanao Peace for the Land of Promise at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2013) and Singapore Biennale, Singapore National Museum (2013).

As a Commissioner of the Hiscom, Aca sought to apply his talent and skills in this tribute to the leaders who contributed to the achievements and milestones in the city’s basic education.

“In recognizing the historical development of our city, the academic workers who helped lay down the intellectual, cultural and moral thrust of the society should never be forgotten.

Their inclusion into the complex fiber of development is crucial, necessary, relevant and noteworthy,” Sulmayor wrote. “Hence, the artist initiated an exhibit to showcase a memorial of the history of Cagayan de Oro’s Schools Divisions Superintendents.”

In his brief talk, Aca acknowledged

the partners and friends who made the exhibit possible: Capitol University, Capitol UniversityMuseum of Three Cultures, Department of Education-Region 10, Cagayan de Oro City Historical and Cultural Commission, and Department of Education-Division of Cagayan de Oro. His contributions to the local art and heritage were also cited by CU President Casimiro Juarez, Jr., DepEd-10 Regional Director Allan G. Farnazo, and fellow artist Pennessencio “Nonoy” Estarte.

“This exhibit is significant not only because it is Nic Aca’s first solo exhibit, but also because it acknowledges the people who contributed to the education of the youth of Cagayan de Oro City” Juarez remarked.

“I was humbled but so privileged too on Nic’s choice of subjects for his first solo exhibit,” Farnazo noted. “I realized that behind the leadership of these Superintendents were numerous schools opened, treacherous rivers navigated, and difficult journeys braved.

Hence, the choice of the subjects is a testament to their leadership and acknowledgment of their contribution to the

community.”

As an intermission, Aca’s grade 12 daughter, Bulawan O. Aca, serenaded her father with her take on Kenny Roger’s “Through the Years”.

“The wood relief portraits are made from hard wood engraved and carved with chisel and router. With the help of fire, the shades and lining of the portraits were stressed and exposed.

The carvings were crafted to ensure each depth was balanced and even, and details intricately shaped to near perfection,” Aca explained. “As a finishing touch, the portraits were brushed with antique wax.”

Fear of failure is getting magnified in other ways, too. Take social media: make a mistake today and your fear that it might be broadcast, even globally, is hardly irrational. At the same time, all of those glossy feeds reinforce unrealistic standards.

In my opinion, and I am not alone with it, it’s the idea that you don’t have to be perfect to be lovable or to be loved.

It’s a work in progress.

And, what I’ve noticed too, is that, each time I’m able to replace criticizing and perfecting with compassion, I feel not only less stressed, but freer. Apparently, that’s not unusual.

In light of the National Arts Month, many passionate individuals whose artistic excellence continually supports this culture were honored and recognized during the Lambago Art Awards, one of this year’s many highlights in the Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts’ (XCCA) Panaghugpong: Xavier Ateneo Arts Festival.

Although Panaghugpong reaches its decade this year (a milestone for XCCA), this is the Lambago Art Awards’ second occasion to recognize local artists, promote their works, and showcase their endeavors since it was launched in 2016.

The list was categorized in six art forms - dance, literature, music, visual arts, film, and theater. It also honored CDObased culture and arts institutions. The recipients consisted of individuals and groups that perpetuate CDO’s vibrant art scene.

Art for the community “As our contribution to the city, we accept

this recognition with humility,” said CDObased poet Lina Sagaral Reyes, who was one of the awardees in the literature category.

Reyes would add this recognition to her list of accolades, including a Carlos Palanca Memorial Award which she had won years ago.

“To receive this award does not mean that we are winners, but are acknowledged for our sustained excellence,” she added in her speech when she spoke onstage at the Centrio Mall Activity Center where the program took place on Wednesday, February 21.

The excellence, she shared, pertains to the artists who take the initiative to involve the community in an inclusive engagement.

Such was the background for Nagkahiusang Manunulat sa Cagayan de Oro (NAGMAC) in the same category.

A group of local writers, NAGMAC holds poetry readings and conducts writing clinics for aspirants of literature.
