grandiose and spectacular welcome was witness and enjoyed by the eighty four (84) American tourists and twelve (12) crew members on- board M/S Caledonian Sky last February 21, 2015 at the Cagayan de Oro City. The warm welcome was led by the Region’s Tourism Czar-Director Catalino ‘Butch’ E. Chan 111 of the Dept. of Tourism X. The tourists were so enthralled and happy as they enjoyed the ethnic dances and folkloric mesmerizing performances from the Mindanao University Science & Technology (MUST) Gintong Ani Dance Troupe moderated

by Leo Palmones.

It was a two-hour nonstop dance performance and awesome entertainment that made the tourists so giddy and some of them jammed with the dances of the performers.

After breakfast, seventy four (74) of the passengers who earlier availed of a Cagayan de Oro tour package disembarked and were given welcome leis led by Ms. Jojo Roque of the Dept. of Tourism, prompting them to remark that Cagayan de Oro leg of their Philippine visit was the grandest welcome they ever had. They were so impressed and some were teary-eyed as they expressed their happiness.

After the welcome entertainment, the seventy (74) tourists who opted

the additional land tour boarded four RTMI buses and first went on a whitewater rafting exhilarating experience, then a trip to Mapawa Nature Reserve, to Malasag Eco-Village, in here the tourists were entertained with ethnic dances, then to Cogon Market and lastly to Museo de Oro. A folkloric museum opened in August 1967 with a display of arrays of relics of the Bukidnon and Maranao cultures, paintings and ethnographic artifacts that depicts the ancient stories of the origin of the world and man in mythic tradition.

tilla Museum, a lifestyle museum wherein Philippine Heirlooms and Antiques in the 20th Century can be seen . It is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the historical and cultural heritage found in the personal memorabilia of the founder of Liceo de Cagayan University of the Pelaez Family of Cagayan de Oro City, they also visited the Bulua Stoneware Pottery.

Finally, the Cruise ship after emotional good byes between the American tourists and the people of Northern Mindanao at 7:00 P.M. the cruise ship departed for Camiguin Province.

To them, Northern Mindanao gave them the best welcome entourage they ever had during the span of their tour from Indonesia down to the Philippines and its only in Cagayan de Oro that they found the real essence of being tourists.

hink a minute…Are you a “yes man” or woman? Do you always say yes to every body who asks you for a favor and help? Some of us just can’t say no to others. The problem is our ‘yes’ often means stress—to us and our family. Many times saying yes to one person means saying no to someone else like your own mate and children.

Of course, we need to care about others and try our best to help those who need it. But we must also know our limits and that we cannot always say yes to everybody who asks us for help.

Learning to sometimes say no to others will mean yes to your own family and responsibilities, which will help lower the stress in your life and home. Remember, you’re the only father or mother your children have; if you don’t do your job of loving and teaching them, then no one will. Then our family life at home becomes a tense, angry mess instead of a peaceful and happy place.

So each time someone asks us for a favor and help, we must look carefully at their request and decide if doing this for them is actually helping them. You see, if we never let others take responsibility for themselves and

their own problems, then we’re not really helping them to become responsible and successful, since we’re always doing their job for them. So just being a “yes man” or woman is not always the kindest thing, nor is it being a true friend.

Other times, when someone asks you to do them a favor, you don’t need to answer them right away. You can tell them that you’re not sure and you’ll answer them later. This way you have time to think about it and check your own schedule and responsibilities first.

Maybe you can help this other person, but at a different time then they asked. Or, you can help them if they’ll take care of the job or errand you won’t be able to do because you’re helping them.

Often, people will still be thankful for your help.

So have you been stressed because you’re always saying yes? You realize you’re giving too much time and energy to helping everyone who asks you for a favor or help, and your family’s been hurting since you’re neglecting your responsibilities to them. Just ask Jesus Christ to forgive you. Jesus will help you learn how to wisely choose when to say yes and when to say no. Just Think a Minute…

Generally speaking, you need to find a way to SET YOURSELF APART from the others.

So what are the ways to become effective?

1. GET TO KNOW YOURSELF Evaluate the things that you can do, ask yourself what are your values, passion, and strengths which you can be proud of.

2. PR ACTICE YOUR PITCH The people whom we want to talk to will only turn their heads on us when we say the “right words at the right time”. Think of ways on how you will be able to get their attention the moment you meet them, let’s say by trying to mention how you can be of help in the company or why they will need you.

3. CREATE QUALITY

RELATIONSHIPS Establish a relationship to people so that you can encourage them to do business with you--- that they want get to know you further because they saw something in you which could be beneficial to the company and to you.

Once you have gained their trust, most likely they will get your services and can result to a bigger opportunity.

4. ALWAYS BE POSITIVE You can’t do all these if from the very start you are not positive that you’re going to make it. TRUST yourself and BE CONFIDENT that you have what it takes to get hired, to get promoted, or be able to get the client you have been eyeing for. To keep you going, always think that you will be selling the most priceless product…YOU. 5. BE PATIENT It’s not that you’re not going to get it; it’s just that THERE IS A RIGHT TIME FOR EVERYTHING. For as long as you are determined,

n a bid to reduce new Ebola infections to zero by April 15, ISierra Leone has embarked

on a door-to-door search of suspected cases. But there are questions on missing Ebola funds.

Sierra Leone on Wednesday launched a door-to-door search for “hidden” Ebola patients.

Dozens of healthcare workers were deployed in remote parts of Port Loko district, east of the capital Freetown.

Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, an activist with the Society for Democratic Initiatives (SDI) in Sierra Leone voiced out in an international television interview the increase in new cases of infection could be attributed to non-compliance of safety regulations on Ebola. These include unsafe burials and patients being hidden from the authorities.

“My hope is that the authorities would be able to enforce the regulations and ensure that the numbers don’t go up as they did recently, the activist said.

The campaign which will last for two weeks follows a larger operation last December in which hundreds of volunteers knocked on doors across the west of the country in a

campaign dubbed “The Western Area surge”.

According to Abdulai, a lot of people are scared and don’t want to let their loved ones who are sick go to Ebola treatment centers – this has caused a lot of spreading around.

“It’s an issue of misperception and continual education and awareness.”

Sierra Leone has seen more than 11,000 Ebola cases and 3,400 deaths during the epidemic which has ravaged West Africa.

Rush to reach zero cases?

I guess, this remains as a dream.

Reducing the number of new Ebola infections to zero in the three worst affected countries; Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone is possible, the UN Ebola coordinator David Nabarro told the General Assembly on Wednesday (18.02.2015) Nabarro however stressed that the zero goal can only be achieved “if local communities stop unsafe burials and healing practices that involve human contact”. He said that while each week there are 10 times fewer cases of Ebola in West Africa than last September, preventing the final 10 percent of infections, about 120 to 130

new cases may well be the hardest part of the response because “it’s like looking for a needle in haystack”.

According to the World Health Organization, there were 128 new confirmed cases of Ebola in t Guinea reported 52 new confirmed cases; Sierra Leone had 74 new cases, 45 of them in the capital Freetown while Liberia reported 2 new confirmed cases.

More than 9,300 people have so far succumbed to the deadly virus which has infected over 23,200 people since the outbreak began more than a year ago.

The United Nations will publish a report this week on how it has spent funds for the Ebola response mission (UNMEER). This will be the first time the UN is accounting for the money according to a top official.

“This week we are going to show you how transparent the operations of this fund have been. We will publish a report about what is being done with all the contributions,” Nabarro said.

Sierra Leone is struggling to explain 2.6 million euros which had been donated to fight the epidemic. The discrepancy was revealed in a report presented

by Laura Taylor-Pearce, Sierra Leone’s auditor general in Freetown last week.

It said Sierra Leonean ministers had lost track of the emergency funds and there was no paperwork to support the contracts. “The loss of funds could result in a reduction of the quality of service delivery in the health sector,” the auditor warned.

The missing funds were reportedly given by institutions and individuals, not from the United Nations. Civic activist Abdulai described the scandal which has been trending on Twitter under the hashtag “Ebolagate”, as a disagreement between parliament and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). “It clearly undermines the credibility on the fight against corruption,” Abdulai said.

He said Ebola was a national issue that had killed many people and for funds set aside to fight the virus to disappear without a trace showed the “insensitiveness of the political elite”.

The Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc. (CPF) is now accepting entries to the 65th season of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards).

Established in 1950, the Palanca Awards honors the legacy of businessman and philanthropist Don Carlos Palanca Sr., a staunch supporter of education and literature. The Palanca Awards aims to develop Philippine Literature by providing incentives for writers to craf t their most outstanding literar y works and by being a treasur y of these literar y gems.

The contest is open to both aspiring and seasoned writers.

The Novel and Nobela categories, both of which are offered only ever y two years, are open for the 2015 contest year.

Only unpublished or unproduced works, (which have not been communicated to the public, subject of a public performance, or published), may be entered in the contest.

Public high schools in the provinces, specifically in Batangas and Negros Occidental, finally have access to 21st centur y learning with the continued expansion of the Global Filipino S chool (GFS) program, a long-term educational initiative of Globe Prepaid.

Selected educational institutions for GFS are Sico 1.0 National High School in San Juan, Batangas and Bata National High School in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. Teachers in the said schools underwent a five-day teacher training workshop in information and communications technology (ICT) integration inside the classrooms, which they will eventually share with the teachers in neighboring schools.
