he Bell Church of Cagayan de Oro and the local government represented by Mayor Oscar S. Moreno joined hands in praying for peace and prosperity in the Year of the Earth Dog during New Year’s Eve rites held 15 February 2018 at the local church in Tambo, Bgy. Macasandig.

“In our church, we believe that the first person to plant an incense stick in our incense urn will have the best chance to get his wish,” explained Greg Marten Lao, former Bell Church Cagayan de Oro Chapter president. “So we have this ceremony on the eve of every Chinese New Year, usually held from 11am to 1AM.” Like in last year’s New Year’s Eve rites held in this same church, Mayor

Moreno again led the lighting and planting of the big incense stick in the incense urn.

Asked about his wish for the Year of the Earth Dog, the chief executive replied, “Peace and Harmony.”

Circulo de Arte presents ‘Pitik’ exhibit at Museo de Oro

Forming part of Panaghugpong 10: Xavier Ateneo Arts Festival, in celebration of the National Arts Month, artists’ group Circulo de Arte collaborated with Museo de Oro to put up the “Pitik” exhibit.

Museo de Oro assistant curator Oscar Esteban A Floirendo, in an interview, explained that the exhibit is about love: “Pitik is a Binisaya word which translates to ‘heartbeat’ [in English].

So why Pitik? The group wanted to answer that question through visualization [visual arts] … Basically, they want to answer the questions:

What does your heart beat for? For whom?

What about? Why?” Circulo de Arte, a young artists’ collective in Northern Mindanao, is composed of college students and alumni of Xavier Ateneo.

The exhibit was made possible with the assistance of Casa del Arte members, a new group composed of XU Senior High School student artists.

Pitik opened on Wednesday, February 7, the same day as the opening of Panaghugpong 10, led

by Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts

(XCCA). Performances from XU Glee Club, Xavier Philharmonia, and XU Cultural Dance Troupe, among other groups, dotted the said event.

Pitik is open to the public for free until March 3, 2018.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) leads the celebration of the National Arts Month by showcasing the aesthetics of Philippine culture such as in architecture, cinema, dance, literary arts, music, dramatic arts, and visual arts, following the theme, Ani ng Sining,

Alab ng Sining.

The celebration aims to promote and popularize artistic creation of Filipinos, integrate arts in community life, celebrate the significance of arts and culture in uplifting national spirit, and harness art as a catalyst for values education.

Selected SSS branches open on Saturdays for automated tellering service In line with the implementation of the Real-Time Posting of Contributions (RTPC) system, 51 branches of the Social Security System (SSS) nationwide are open on all Saturdays of February, to assist employers and members in paying their contributions thru the Automated Tellering System (ATS) facility.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said that aside from Saturday operations, 78 SSS branches also extended their daily operation for two hours, from 5pm to 7pm, for the whole

month of February to accept contribution payments.

“Since the RTPC system is new and some members and employers are not yet accustomed to it, we are extending our ATS facility to accept contribution payments and at the same time, provide assistance in using the RTPC system,” said Dooc.

In the National Capital Region, 17 branches are open on all Saturdays of February and have extended daily operations. These branches are Cubao, Diliman, Eastwood, sss/PAGE 7

DENR-Green Convergence all set for 2nd Philippine Environment Summit It’s all systems go for the second Philippine Environment Summit slated for February 20-22 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced on Thursday.

Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu will keynote the conference organized by the DENR and Green Convergence Philippines, a large coalition of environmental and developmental organizations, networks, faith-based groups and individuals championing food safety, healthy environment and sustainable economy.

Cimatu is expected to report on the state of the country’s environment, including accomplishments and priorities for the year ahead.

“Hopefully, through this summit, our partners from Green Convergence and elsewhere will be guided by our priorities and find further impetus to contribute for the benefit of fellow Filipinos and the environment,” the environment chief said.

Deputy Executive Secretary Bradnee Chambers of the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species and Senator Grace Poe are among the resource speakers invited to the environment summit, with the theme “Mainstreaming innovations for sustainable development.”

Aside from Cimatu, the summit delegates will be welcomed

by Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III and Green Convergence president Angelina Galang.

Each day of the three-day summit will consist of plenary sessions in the morning and five parallel breakout sessions in the afternoon.

On Day 2 of the conference, Fr. Daniel Franklin Pilario, dean of St. Vincent School of Theology will speak about

the Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change entitled “Laudato Si,” while DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones will discuss the sustainable development goals and the environmental aspects of the Philippine development plan.

Development Bank of the Philippines First Vice-President Paul Lazaro will tackle financing environmental investments, while Deputy Ombudsman Gerard Mosquera will give a presentation on the challenges in enforcing environmental laws.

The morning session will end with a launching of the book entitled “Philippine Native Tree 303,” which is an update to the book “Philippine Native Trees 101” that the Green Convergence launched in 2012.

Retail giant SM, the Film Development Council, and the French embassy in Manila will sponsor a presentation of the environmental film “Terra” featuring United Nations Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador Yan Arthus-Bertrand.

Terra is a 90-minute documentary that shows stunning visual images depicting the relationship of humans with other species while becoming more and more isolated from nature.

On Day 3, Chambers will talk about migratory species and climate change, while Poe will speak about the right of every Filipino to safe food and environment.

Former United States Vice President and now Climate Reality Project founder and chair Al Gore sent a video message on significant strides in the climate change movement.

The summit will culminate in the symbolic signing of three partnership agreements for the management of Butuanon River Watershed in Cebu; support for the Sierra Madre Biodiversity

Framework in Southern Tagalog; and the care for endangered native tree species through the Binhi Program.

The first environmental summit, which was held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City in 2016, highlighted “Laudato Si” and the adoption of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

For years I have searching for inspirational stories no particular people just the heroism and the power to move and inspire the whole nation. This time it is an agency of the government I found very willing to give a gift of skill that can change someones life abruptly. TESDA or Technical Education and Skills Development with the purpose of strengthening, promoting,coordinating, and expanding the programs of education in technical aspects and enhancing the socio-economic program of the Philippines through the development of skilled manpower in agriculture, industrial, and trade-technical, fishery and other vocational courses. I have been tracking its programs for about few years now until I have personally met the Director General Guiling Mamondiong.

I found his compassion and dedication to help extend a bright future to everyone. There is no age limit to opportunities he said embrace the skill it will walk you to your desired path.

There is no poverty that cannot bridge you to your success only the ambition that will drive to where you want to be. It is quite impressive to witness successful stories. Recently a project of the Provincial Government have pave way to 3,000 graduates in cooperation with TESDA and Senator Loren Legarda in the Governors pilot program ISKOLAR KO NI BAMBI. It was full packed with students from varieties of technical and vocational fileds. Tagoloan Dome was the venue of the event dated February 14,2018. It was witnessed by Provincial Director, Regional Director of TESDA and Regional Training Center of Region X. I found this programs the only link to our economic distress. The Governor has expressed its honor to have given the opportunities that would lead these graduates to its destinations and through there achievement not only that it can find

employment but give everyone a better future. Graduating from the programs given by TESDA will ensure the trainee a National Certificate from TESDA Assessment that comes with benefits that include a quality assurance that the graduate has acquired proper knowledge and an understanding of the task at hand from undergoing a series of practical and hands on demonstrations, positive attitudes from interviews with people who contributes to the job and work projects. Not only that but the certificate has acquired the values that can help them the skills needed for the occupation and

future opportunities. Through this programs we will be able to uplift the economy with globally competitive workers that will give a renowned quality of skill that can honor the nation. BIMP-EAGA officials map out short-term action plan in Brunei Key government and private sector representatives of the four-country BIMPEAGA sub-region have converged here today (Feb 14) for the group’s annual strategic planning meeting aimed to map out programs under its Vision 2025.

Currently held at the Brunei International Convention Center, the 2018 BIMP-EAGA Strategic Planning

Meeting takes on the sub-region’s five pillars of development which include connectivity, food basket, environment, tourism as well as socio-cultural and education.

The BIMP-EAGA stands for Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), a sub-regional cooperation founded in 1994 in order

to spur business activities within the economic area.

Paper still matters The frequent whirring of printers in offices - despite the Internet, Microsoft Word, social media (I love Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter), scanners, smart phones applications and many much more - attest to that.

I was very much old fashioned in many things.

While still typing on an old manual typewriter, my former colleagues in different publishing houses used already electric units. I loved my antique typewriter. I love it till today. Yes, it’s still here at my office in Davao City. I can’t use it anymore, because no more ribbons are available in the Philippines. It’s fine for me. My electric typewriter is also here. Just beside the manual unite. Those were the days, my love... .

It has been sometimes at the end of the 1990’s.

I worked in an international publishing house in Berlin with branches in Amsterdam and New York. I still used one of those wonderful electric type writers - and tried to avoid vehemently a personal computer.

Already during that time, I needed to hold paper in my hands. Paper, says the productivity expert David Allen, is “in your face”. I strongly agree with David.

He said, “Its physical presence can be a goal to completing tasks, whereas computer files can easily be hidden and thus forgotten. I am also returning to paper planners for this very reason. Smile ... .

David Allen, the author of “Getting Things Done”, does much of his writing on a computer. So do I meanwhile. But, there are still times when writing with a fountain pen on a notepad. It allows “us” to get “our” heads in the right place. When I tried to learn more from David Allen, I really got surprised, that we have many things in common. Old fashioned or not? I don’t care. Here are some facts: Paper print outs serve an important function.

For long texts, a print out can allow a reader to better understand relationships between sections and writings. Paper handouts are still a presence at meetings partly because they are useful for taking notes. Reading a long document on paper rather than

on a computer screen Have My Say helps people “better understand the geography of the argument contained within, “said Richard H.R. Harper, a principal researcher for Microsoft in Cambridge/ England and co-author with Abigail J. Sellen of “The Myth of the Klaus Doring Paperless Office,” published already in 2001.

I also strongly agree with Sellen, saying, that using more than one computer screen can be helpul for all this cognitive juggling. But when workers are going back and forth between points in a longer document, it can be more efficient to read on paper.

How about “e-reading a book”? A novel, a drama, whatever? What do you prefer, my dear reader?

You wanna know my opinion? I am sure, you can imagine. Yes guys, I still need a book in my hands for my leisure reading. I need to feel the book as well as I need to smell a fresh-printed newspaper.

Environment savers might start jelling at me now, though I am one of them. So, where is the edge and borderline?

Paper can be indeed a luscious and beautiful thing - the way we savor fine food and wine, as Steve Leveen, co-founder and CEO of Levenger, said.

People complain that writing by hand is slow (yes I am really!), BUT that can be good for thinking and creating! Here we are again!

NGCP, DICT agree on fiber optic availability for NBP

GCP and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) have agreed on the way forward for NGCP’s fiber optic capacity availabity for third party use under the National Broadband Program (NBP).

NGCP President and CEO Henry Sy, Jr, and DICT OIC Undersecretary Eliseo Rio both committed to partner on the use of transmission facilities as backbone for the NBP for the duration of the latter’s Concession. You can read more about it here.

Rio noted, “The core of the matter is who owns the dark fiber of NGCP/ Transco. When it is turned over to TransCo, whatever agreement was done with NGCP may be modified, changed, or reviewed by TransCo.” NGCP earlier

reiterated its willingness to enter into a bilateral agreement with the government for the lease of its fiber optic capacity available for use of third parties at no cost.

“NGCP will enter into the agreement up to the life its Concession, which is until 2034, provided that in the event that the Concession is extended, the bilateral agreement will also be extended,” the company said.

“NGCP will not object to any separate agreement DICT signs with TransCo for so long as the exclusive rights of the company in relation to transmission and related businesses, for the entire duration of its concession are upheld,” it added.

NGCP's existing fiber optic cable network enables real-time communication between transmission facilities, and with generators and distribution utilities.

The fiber optic capacity to be leased out by the company uses transmission facilities.

Allowing government or third parties to "piggy-back" on this transmission communication backbone will be critical in the immediate implementation of the government's national broadband program.

"We are not interested in entering the telecommunications business. Transmission

operations remains to be the primary business of NGCP. The lease of available fiber optic capacity is specifically allowed under our concession as a 'related business to maximize the utilization of its assets.'

Such lease agreement is contemplated by our concession and franchise and is not considered our primary mandate," NGCP clarified .

NGCP said its available fiber optic capacity can support

the needs of both the government and a private party.

"Should the government use only a portion of the fiber optic capacity available for use of third parties, NGCP may also enter into other bilateral contracts with interested telecommunication companies based on the contract with government, for the use of the remaining capacity.

Under the EPIRA, 50% of the net income

from these bilateral contracts will be used to reduce transmission rates. But priority use remains with NGCP's internal communications purposes and the government's NBP." NGCP is a Filipinoled, privately owned company in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid, led by majority shareholders Henry Sy, Jr. and Robert Coyiuto, Jr.

director of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), which serves as the Philippine Coordinating Office for BIMP-EAGA. Montenegro said the Brunei strategic planning meeting endeavors to translate

the strategies under BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 into priority and doable programs and projects of the five pillars or clusters which are designed to increase trade, investments and tourism.

He added that a number of the identified projects include establishment of new air and sea

The following day, the Cagayan de Oro FilipinoChinese Community held its traditional motorcade starting at Rodelsa Circle, around the city then back to Bell Church to distribute tikoy to everyone for luck.

“We have been doing this for the last four years,” Lao said.

“Everybody regardless of wealth or social stature is welcome to partake of this lucky tikoy because it comes from the church.”

Lao said most people in Cagayan de Oro observe the Southern Chinese traditions from Fujian province with 95% of all Chinese-Filipinos in Cagayan de Oro originally coming from the town of Jinjiang, near Xiamen. However, only in Bell Church are Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity represented in one church.

Bell Church was founded in 1960 by Chinese immigrants from Canton, China.

They established its first church and main office at the boundary of Baguio City and Trinidad municipality, Benguet.

The name Bell Church comes from the basic function of a bell, which is to call one’s attention to an important message or warning of an impending threat.

Bell Church has five major patron saints who symbolize the five major religions in China: Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Confucianism.

In a similar manner, the Bell Church’s mission was formed primarily to serve as a catalyst for mankind’s spiritual awakening, and the full acceptance of the ultimate importance to traverse the right path in life. This is achieved by fostering brotherhood aimed at the fulfillment of one’s shared responsibility to society.

Last February 7, Bell Church Spiritual Leader and Head Administrator Rev. Elias R. Ng presided over the Rededication and Reinstallation of the Patron Saints of Bell Church at their Cagayan de Oro Church in Tambo, Macasandig.

Bell Church was not spared the destruction

wreaked by the flashfloods spawned by Tropical Storm Vinta last December 22, 2017. The whole church compound was flooded, including everything inside the church.

With the cooperation and support of all Bell Church members in Cagayan de Oro, repairs and cleaning were carried out in time for the Lunar New Year’s Eve last February 16, 2018.

The ceremony started with the placing of treasures inside the incense furnace, representing gold and silver paper money, rice and coins. The subsequent lighting and offering of the big incense stick by Rev. Elias R. Ng and the ringing of the bell served as a blessing to the church, its members and the city of Cagayan de Oro. Officers and members of the Cagayan de Oro Chapter of the Bell Church took turns carrying the statues of the five patron saints to the altar as a sign of unity in fulfilling the church’s mission and show of devotion to the patron saints.

The lighting of the candles by the officers signified a new beginning and life after hardships with them leading the way illuminated by the light of wisdom from the saints.

The flowers represented growth to empower the congregation to continuously and actively participate in propagating the Bell Church’s teachings. The fruit offering represent blessings of prosperity for the church and members to enable them to better serve those in need.

For Visayas, SSS Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Tagbilaran, Ormoc, Tacloban, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Kalibo, Iloilo-Central and Roxas are open on Saturdays and have twohour overtime everyday.

Meanwhile, SSS Bago, Bais, Sagay and Victorias opened their ATS facility from 8am to 5pm on all Saturdays.

For Mindanao, only SSS Davao has Saturday and extended daily operation while branches in Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ozamis, Valencia, Mati, General Santos, Kidapawan, Koronadal, Tacurong, Dipolog, Ipil and Pagadian have extended their ATS facility from 5pm to 7pm daily.

“With these extended office hours, we hope members and employers

will be able to pay their SSS contributions on time. This will also give them extended period to register with My.SSS and create their online account,” said Dooc.

Dooc reminds members and employers that before they can pay thru the ATS facility, they must have their Payment Reference Number (PRN) which they can generate via their online account.

However, if they do not have an online account yet, they can get their PRN from the Member Service Representatives (MSR) of the SSS branch.

Dooc said that SSS hopes that all its members and employers will have an online account by end of February. He said that SSS already designated employees for each branch to assist members and employers with the registration with My.SSS. Members are also encouraged to update their mobile numbers with SSS by visiting the nearest branch or thru their online account.

With the updated mobile number, members will receive their PRN via text which they can show everytime they pay their contributions thru the ATS facility or any of the accredited collection partners of SSS.

Chevron’s Volunteer Week marks 10 years of giving back to host communities

hevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, recently celebrated ten years of doing Volunteer Week, an annual five-day initiative to invest time, resources and energy in social issues that matter to employees, customers and communities.

“Volunteer Week is a celebration of volunteerism, a core value of Chevron, in

which employees and other Chevron business partners are encouraged to work for the progress and improvement of communities where it does business. Employees volunteer time and energy to be a part of projects that positively impact the children, youth, disadvantage people and environment,” stated Louie Zhang, CPI country chairman.

During the most recent Volunteer Week, more than

500 Chevron volunteers engaged in a variety of charitable community work.

Starting with volunteers helping train stay-at-home moms and out-of-school youths in home-based soapmaking business.

CPI employees also hosted music therapy for pediatric cancer patients while parents had nutrition lecture and group counseling sessions.

Batangas were taught the importance of road-safety through role-playing with the volunteers. Volunteer Week culminated in a beach cleanup in San Pascual Batangas.

Volunteers collected tons of debris and trash to clear the coastline for endangered Olive-Ridley sea turtles nest during the cold months.

Chevron’s past programs such as its anti-TB awareness campaign has helped about

300,000 public transport workers learn how to prevent and seek treatment for the disease. Its Caltex Fuel Your School drive has provided 21st century learning equipment that benefits 1.17 million public high school students in Metro Manila, Davao and Bicol. Chevron also gives millions in donations yearly to the Philippine Red Cross to help victims of natural disasters.
