(Viva) brings to life a story that has transcended Philippine entertainment. The blockbuster collaboration is set to produce a theater adaptation of the classic drama Bituing Walang Ningning.

The story tells of a singer’s rise up the competitive ranks of show business following her plight through love and the hardships she endured on her way up its steep ladder to success. A story originally told over a serialized comic strip by fictionist Nerissa Cabral, Bituing Walang Ningning was made into a blockbuster movie in 1985 starring Sharon Cuneta, Cherie Gil and Christopher De Leon and was then re-made into a hit television series back in 2006 with Sarah Geronimo, Angelika dela Cruz, and Ryan Agoncillo playing the lead roles. Similar to how

the plot of the story unfolded, the doors are open for local aspirants to play the lead role of Dorina Pineda popularized in the movie by Sharon Cuneta and by Sarah Geronimo in the drama’s TV run. Staying true to its advocacy to ‘Champion the Filipino’ by supporting local artists and promoting performing arts, RWM together with Full House Theater Company and Viva will hold auditions for the lead of ‘Bituing Walang Ningning: The Musical’. T

hink a minute…Are you in the habit of putting salt on your food? Maybe you have a habit of thinking you’re not smart and that you’ll never succeed in life. Don’t forget, your habits control your life. What we keep doing every day becomes our life! As the saying goes: “Plant your thought and you’ll reap your action. Plant your action and you’ll reap your habit. Plant your habit and you’ll reap your life.” After awhile, our habits become such a part of us that we don’t even notice when we’re doing anything wrong. So we end up doing wrong things naturally, whether it’s lying, cheating and stealing, gossiping about others, getting drunk, being lazy, or whatever our bad habits are. But the great news is that you can break your bad habits and change your life! You see, just like you learned your old bad habits, you can learn new

ones—if you really want to. And, if you get the help and power you need. Did you know that to get to the moon it takes more power for that rocket to lift off and break away from the earth’s pull of gravity than all the power it needs to travel to the moon and back to earth—half a million miles! That’s how strong the earth’s pull of gravity is. You see, our bad habits pull us down like gravity. So breaking and changing those bad habits is not always easy. But Jesus Christ has the power you need so you finally can lift off and start breaking away from those wrong habits. It’s only then you’ll be free to learn new, good habits, such as always being honest, speaking positively about others, enjoying more time getting close to your family members, always doing your best work on the job, reading the Bible and talking to Jesus every hurst/PAGE 7

his is one of the most frequently asked questions na natatanggap ko, “Ano ba ang budget? Paano ko ba gagawin yun?” Well, budget is a written plan kung paano mo i-hahandle ang income mo. Uulitin ko, it is a WRITTEN PLAN. Kailangan mong isulat to easily see how much you earn and magkano lang ang pwede mong gastusin. And the first thing you need to do is to ... KNOW YOUR INCOME AND TRACK YOUR EXPENSES Syempre bago ka gumastos, dapat alam mo kung magkano ba talaga ang dumadating na pera sayo. Daily ba ang kita? Kinsenas, katapusan? Or once a month? Yung mga detalye kasi na ‘to ay important to guide you how much and when should you spend.

Based pa lang sa pag-list mo ng income and expenses mo, alam mo na if you’re living BEYOND or WITHIN your means. And this is a good step for you to have self-assessment sa kung paano ka mag-handle ng pera. Next step is you should start to ... SEPARATE YOUR WANTS AND NEEDS Sa isang blank paper, gumawa ka ng two columns. One is for your wants and the other is for your needs. At habang ginagawa mo ‘to, magpakatotoo ka!

As of now this stays under sa wants category mo. At pag na-differentiate mo na ang wants at needs, start to ... DEVELOP AN ENVELOP SYSTEM Each envelop is equal to one category. Kapag may

natira, ilagay mo sa savings envelop. Though at first, you may find it hard sa pagadjust dahil sa limitation ng iyong budget. Just give it a little bit more time, masasanay ka din.

e let the cat out of the bag. In a public pronouncement which surprised even the closest advisers, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said, he is willing to run for President of the Philippines “if only to save the Republic”. Yes, I believe him. I also can imagine a federal system here such as in my home country the Federal Republic of Germany. Yes, the good mayor is right and is just voicing out the opinion of many people: Filipinos, possible foreign investors and many more. Of course, these are strong words of Rody Duterte: “If only to save this republic, I could run for President!” I stepped on Philippine soil for the first time in 1976. We all remember that time. Regular visits of mine followed since 1982 - especially v i s i t i n g M i n d a n a o. Since that time, I tried

to understand the situation in Mindanao. For a foreign journalist it wasn’t easy. L et’s jump to t he pres ent situat ion of my second home, this wonderful countr y Phi lippines. D ozens of police officers were killed in an anti-terror raid that has dented the popularity of Philippine President B enigno Aquino, rendering major reforms unlikely during the rest of his term, says analyst Alecia Quah. Terming it as a show of goodwill, the largest Muslim reb el g roup in the Philippines, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), returned firearms of the police commandos killed in an assault at the end of January. MILF military chief Von Al Haq was quoted by local media as saying that his group’s members got hold of the weapons after their

The police were killed by members of the MILF and its breakaway group - the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) - w hen t he y entered rebel-controlled territory in the country, while conducting an antiterror operation seeking two suspects. The incident has imperiled the g ov e r n m e nt’s p e a c e talks with the rebels. The attack has eroded political backing for President Aquino to continue to engage in negotiations aimed at bringing lasting peace to the country, 40 years after the outbreak of a Muslim s ep arat ist conflict in Mindanao, the

country’s second biggest and southernmost major island. Public opposition to the granting of further concessions to the MILF has also stiffened. At the same time, calls have been growing for Aquino to step down. Well, let’s think about, who can show the way - who can guide - who is able to direct - who precede - who really play the first card in a round who outstrip - who go in front? Who don’t tire us with empty words? Who is the one who do not only the votes of the people but also the support of everybody - down the last barangay captain and surroundings. A Federal Republic of the Philippines? Good deeds shine as stars from heaven. A democratic government - elected by the people for the people. Nothing else. Really nothing else!

The Xavier Stage presents

Dial M for Murder Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder caps the 4th Theatre Season (20142015) titled Misteryo of the Xavier Stage – a resident repertory company of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. The company presented Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians in September 2014 and Joseph Kesserling’s Arsenic and Old Lace in December 2014 with a re-staging last January 5 to 7 due to a command performance. Playwright Don Pagusara adapted Ten Little Indians while resident playwright and actor Roger Garcia adapted Arsenic and Old Lace. Both plays were contextualized and translated to Cebuano. To celebrate the National Arts Month, the company premieres Dial M with a fresher adaptation by contextualizing the play in a contemporary Cagayan de Oro setting.

Though some might take the play’s plot as unimaginable to happen, The Xavier Stage makes sure to portray mistaken opportunity and greed for money, power, contempt and suspicion for these are dominant themes that determine the characters’ motives and intentions in the play. The characters are e nt an g l e d w it h t h e mystery of solving who imposed the perfect crime to an ‘endangered woman’ whose string of power is the source of love, infidelity and betrayal. T h e p l ay s o m e h ow presents a ‘hyper-macho world,’ where a woman has to stand firm to triumph her femininity. Despite her flaws and weaknesses, her nature befalls much sympathy, compassion and love offered and rendered to her advantage. Palanca winner Don

Pagusara adapted the play. Carl Cyril Manere, Tracy June Dy, Rosell Velez, Roger Garcia, Noli Paglinawan, Lila Gianneli Ang, Edmund Telmo, Simon Pierre Salera, Ken Francisco and Ryan Ilogon compose the cast who are from the actors’ pool of TXS. The play premieres on February 23, 2015 at 7:30 pm at the XU Little Theater. The play runs through February 28, 2015. For seat reservations, please call the Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts office at 858-3116 local 2059. Dial M for Murder is a production by The Xavier Stage supported by Xavier University, Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts, the Office of Mission and Ministry of XU and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
