ith no less than the former Secretary of Tourism Dr. Mina T. Gabor as the main speaker, the City Tourism Council and the City Government, through the City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office, will hold a one-day EFFECTIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DATA BASE GENERATION COURSE on February 12, 2016 for frontline service personnel and executives in tourismoriented and tourismrelated establishments in the city.

Dorothy Jean B. Pabayo, chairperson of the City Tourism Council, said the one-day activity will be in partnership with International

School of Sustainable Tourism (ISST) which implements training programs all over the country and Asia on effective ways and techniques for frontline service. She added that the lecturers, led

by Dr. Gabor, help motivate frontline service providers in the hospitality and tourism sector to deliver quality service to guests and tourists.

Around a hundred executives and frontline service personnel and executives from tourism-oriented and tourism-related establishments in Cagayan de Oro will be attending the course.

They are from hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, white water rafting outfitters

“The impact and outcome of this course will go a long way

towards cementing a strong culture of tourism among our service providers in the city,” Pabayo said. The

City Tourism Council has come up with this project as one of its opening salvo of a lineup of major projects and activities for 2016.

It may be recalled that tourism development is one of the major thrusts of the administration of Mayor Oscar S. Moreno.

He has pushed for the realization of this rare occasion when the city can bring over top notch speakers to share their

expertise on quality frontline service in the tourism industry.

Dr. Gabor and her team from ISST will also meet with stakeholders in the tourism industry to study programs and policies related to tourism in the city and the region, as well as update ISST’s data base of tourism-oriented and tourism-related establishments in the city.

-Maria Rubio, Brooklyn College Ms. Rubio, an activist-reformist and student representative of Brooklyn College Student Government was very straightforward when she mentioned that political decisions, ordinances and public policies implemented by the people we elect into public office, can make or break the lives of their constituents.

The Data According to the 2010 Census Data, Cagayan de Oro City has a total population of 602,088 and half of its population belong to the age group of 24.2 years old and below. The data available is enough to conclude that half of the number of people living in Cagayan de Oro are young residents.

The PSA (Philippine Statistics Authority) Census data also says that, “Persons aged 15 to 19 years (10.8 percent) comprised the largest age group” in Cagayan de Oro City. The third most

significant result we can conclude from the data, according to the PSA is that “The voting-age population (18 years and over) accounted for 63.2 percent of the household population of the city in 2010, up from 58.4 percent in 2000.”

As of the moment of this writing, I have commissioned a survey to narrow down and identify the population of age group 15-35 years old, which is the United Nations official definition of Persons that belong to the “Youth” category. That information can help us define future articles for youth.

The Youth Consequently, what the data says is very relevant to all political candidates running for this year’s elections because it is proof that now we know that a huge portion of CDO’s population are coming from the youth. Do not wonder why I want to make an emphasis on data because there is still a huge portion of leaders in different areas of the Philippines that continue to neglect their duty of properly understanding the profiles of their constituents, specifically their needs, issues and challenges.

Who will garner the YouthVote in CDO?

enough for candidates to take into consideration the needs and concerns of this growing age group and how the Local Government can be a partner in providing more opportunities for growth and development in the city, especially for its young constituency.

Again, because we have established that we the youth, comprise a significant portion of residents in the City, we as a youth sector must be relevant in the eyes of our leaders. Our needs must be addressed by the city, particularly by its political leaders.

Political Leaders have the power, the influence and the trust and confidence of the people to create a better city. It is their mandated duty engraved in their iron throne.

Kagay-anon youth are very promising. Ernesto Baconga Neri, a Xavier University Youth Leader tells us that the Kagayanon youth are “engaged and participative”.

He continues that “In Cagayan de Oro, the youth has a high level of

societal consciousness,”.

But Maria Rivera, a Development Communicatons Professor says otherwise that CDO youth are becoming complacent and to quote her statement in a socialmedia website article, “there is too much complacency among the youth. Saan ba dapat manggaling ang hugot para umaksyon tayo?”.

It means that though youth have a high level of awareness when it comes to problems and issues faced by the city of Cagayan de Oro, participation in the processes to help resolve the City’s concerns is absent from most of our youth, especially in the democratic political process.

These young leaders imply that the ability to participate in the processes to help resolve and address the City’s concerns is absent from most of our youth, especially in the areas of the democratic and political process.

be resolved. We must have a youth leader, a total representative of the Youth of the City.

The absence of the SK has left a significant gap in the political process especially in determining the windows of opportunity of our youth in the City. Nevertheless, we emphasize the need for a Leader who can take into consideration the needs of those next in line to govern and live in this City.

Now is the time to look into the long-run.

We need a leader who can put into his personal and political agenda the needs of our Young Kagay-anons. There is no need to explain this.

Who else will propel this city and make it a City of the Future but the next generation? I am talking about us, the youth who toil day and night with their studies, the youth who hardly make ends meet in this city. Who is caring for the youth?

Our parents who have gone abroad because the opportunities in this land are not enough to yield sustainable income

to feed a family?

Now that is also another issue that must be addressed. Ask around your peers or even in your own family, there must be 3 out of your 10 relatives in Cagayan de Oro that survive through the remittances of their OFW or OCW relatives.

Though labor export disguised as a cruel OFW migration phenomenon, decorated as “Modern Heroes” our City must also look into the welfare of the families left behind by those parents who work abroad.

Give peace a chance!

I am a real peace-loving person. I am always looking for peaceful solutions. I support peace conferences and peace talks. Living at peace and freedom - a desire of millions of people worldwide. Making one’s peace with the world also a desire of millions of people worldwide!

Reality looks very different as we all know.

But the yesterday’s Munich deal in Germany represents a glimmer of hope for Syria. The deal for a cessation of hostilities is vague but also the best hope to end the carnage in Syria.

Regardless of whether the agreement becomes reality, one country has shown its strength, commented German National Television columnist Michael Knigge.

Major powers, led by the United States and Russia, agreed to end hostilities in Syria and allow humanitarian access to besieged areas of the country. But, as diplomats said Friday (yesterday - I write this piece on February 13, 2016!), whether the deal

holds is still wide open.

Going into the Syria talks, US Secretary of State John Kerry had demanded an immediate ceasefire while his German colleague Frank-Walter Steinmeier had hoped for a breakthrough.

What come out of the negotiations, which lasted far longer than expected, was neither.

Instead the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) agreed to humanitarian access to besieged areas this week and to work out “modalities” for a “nationwide cessation of hostilities” within one week. The latter is the job of a newly formed taskforce jointly led by the United States and Russia.

If this sounds rather vague, that is because it is. The details of how all of this is supposed to happen within such a short time are still sketchy at best. As is the term “cessation of hostilities,” a much less defined concept than ceasefire, as Kerry himself acknowledged, says also Michael Knigge,

who covers transatlantic relations.

The big remaining problem is when - and if Russia - will halt its airstrikes, for instance those taking place around Aleppo. An end to bombing will prove to be a key condition to allowing humanitarian aid to be delivered to suffering civilian populations around the country. What’s more, even if this deal can be translated into reality on the ground, it does not mean, as we have seen in the Ukraine conflict, that it will hold for long or that a sustainable political solution will be reached. In addition, an end of hostilities simply freezes the conflict - and the current power constellation on the ground. That’s an unsavory prospect considering not only Syrian ruler Bashar alAssad but also most other actors in the country.

But even having said all that, the tenuous agreement reached Friday is still the best and only deal around when it comes to trying to end the carnage

in Syria. Given the current geopolitical circumstances surrounding the Syrian conflict - with a reluctant US providing ample space that an assertive Russia has been eager to fill - the deal hammered out in a late night session looks like the most realistic option for success.

Miss Earth – England 2015 visits CDO R

EMEMBER Miss Earth – England 2015 Katrina Kendall? She was featured in Mindanao Daily News last September after word came out that her mom is a Cagayanon.

Well she is currently in her hometown of Cagayan de Oro spending her Valentine here before f lying back to the United Kingdom.

It’s not exactly a Valentine soiree because she busied herself in various environmental outreaches since she stepped into the city a week ago.

Last February 5, Kendall went to Boys Town orphanage in Lumbia and distributed around 40 toiletry kits.

“I don’t want to give out food. Other benefactors can take care of that. I want to hand out something that will last and that

is really needed by the kids,” she remarked in a face-to-face interview with this writer last Tuesday afternoon at Café Figaro in Limketkai Mall.

Each toiletry kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, nail cutter, shampoo, bath soap and laundry soap.

Kendall also lectured the kids basics in solid waste management focusing on anti-litter.

A day later, the beneficiaries from Boys Town as well as a dozen volunteers from Bayabas National High School took time planting around 30 trees in Kendall’s ancestral farm in barangay Mambuaya.

After the activity, there was a face painting event and both the tweens from Boys Town as well as the teens from Bayabas enjoyed the activity thoroughly.

On Wednesday, it was

the turn of the Bayabas National High School campus to be planted with trees.

Kendall’s trip here was actually the last leg of her 2016 Southeast Asian tour which took her to Singapore, Thailand and Myanmar.

She joined other Miss Earth 2015 winners from the United Kingdom – Wales, Scotland and Ireland – to the finals last December in Austria where she said it was a memorable experience of a lifetime for her.

A chemist by profession, Kendall worked for a while in the financial industry in Singapore.

But the Miss Earth experience changed all that.

Kendall now says she will be embarking on working in the environmental sector beyond her Miss Earth – England reign.

“We don’t want to get the traditional manicuristas because they are so difficult to retrain because they won’t change their methods and they think they know better so we need to get fresh, inexperienced technicians,” Kerby recalls. “Now, all our therapists and nail technicians are new.”

“We did training for the theoretical part, reviewed the treatments, and we changed them all,” Ms. Berends noted. “We changed everything.”

For instance, unlike the traditional ventosa treatment (still practiced by most spas in the city, several glasses are affixed on the patient’s back), Sentara therapists now use only one after learning the theoretical part of the practice.

“When you massage the affected muscle with the glass and soften it, then bring it to the lymphatic system, you take the bad toxins (locally known as panuhot) out all in one motion,” Ms. Berends explained.

“The most important basic thing is the health of the customer. Most customers come to a spa because they have aches and pains. Wellness is only relaxation, but therapeutic is trying to solve a problem.”

In fact, the patient at Sentara undergoes a diagnostic process not unlike what they undergo when they visit their doctor.

“In Holland, the therapist is the professional because of her training and experience. She will analyze your body with the help of the Anamnese (case history of the patient). For instance, many diabetic patients have lost digits or limbs caused by an infected wound incurred during a manicure or pedicure,” the Dutch expert said.

“If you use an Anamnese, followed by the Spinal Muscle Test (SMT, a proprietary test exclusive to Sentara) we can say where exactly the problem is in the body, and we will tell the customer what type of treatment is the best for her,” Kerby added.

Besides training the staff, the partners also prioritized the acquisition and use of the proper equipment.

“We make sure that everything is hygienic

and sterilized,” Ms. Berdends said. “We have special sterilizers for beauty spas called it bullet sterilizers. You heat crystals and after you use your instruments you wash them with soap, alcohol then put them in the sterilizer.

Afterwards, you again clean them with alcohol, so you know for sure they are free of bacteria and viruses which can contaminate your clients. Ultraviolet (UV) light alone doesn’t kill all microbes and bacteria, unlike the bullet sterilizer we use in Sentara Spa which kills all bacteria, fungus and viruses.”

Ms. Berends said there are salons exclusively for manicure and pedicure in Holland; salons for facials run by beauticians and full service spas which can do everything.

If you want to start a pedicure or manicure salon or spa, one needs to register first with the chamber of commerce.

If you don’t have the diplomas proving you have studied the theory and passed the exam, you cannot open a business.

Even if you are allowed to start, you need to submit a business plan.

You need to show your Anamnese plan, your hygiene plan, and what type of treatment you will do.
