VIP Hotel was the city’s first ‘5-star’ hotel.

In the city’s younger days it was the place to be whenever you had a social or business affair. It was the axis upon which the city’s night life turned.

N what could be a déjà vu for their 2012-2014 achievements, Team MSU-IIT dislodged 2015 defending champs Xavier University Junior High School into second place to reclaim the coveted 12th Steag Energy Quiz championship during the thrilling quiz show held last Friday at

Limketkai Center.

MSU-IIT of Iligan City bested 29 other high schools in Northern Mindanao with 2015 runner-up Regional Science High School settling in for third.

With that, MSU-IIT got P10,000, a trophy and gold medals for each of the three team members; XUJHS got P8,000, a trophy and silver medals;

and RSHS got P6,000, a trophy and bronze medals.

The yearly event has become one of the much awaited campus competitions among high schools in

Northern Mindanao as it provides opportunities among students to demonstrate and prove their competence and knowledge in the fields of science and energy.

The quiz covers facts,

laws and current events pertaining to electricity, energy and other subjects relating to natural and physical sciences, chemistry and physics.

The 12-year-long tradition is part of Steag

State Power’s corporate social responsibility to its host community of Northern Mindanao.

I

visited Sophie Red Hotel and Onshore Restaurant with my best friend, Vianney, just last week to – anyway – kill the boredom of a nonworking day. Aside from that, there are already a lot of people who visited and had broadcast about this place, that made me really curious about and decide to visit it myself.

We commuted and rode a motor vehicle going in the place which is located at Bobontugan, Jasaan and just paid 14.00Php for the two of us. The resort is very accessible, for visitors can see a very big signage and it is just located nearby the road.

The sun was shining brightly and because we went there by mid nine in the morning, the

heat are easily pricking through our skin but once we get inside, lo and behold, it is indeed a paradise.

We paid entrance fee and took a lot of pictures before getting inside the restaurant.

Never did I forget that famous pathway made up of wood I have seen in several photos in social media. So, there I am.

Hehe.

We are met with wide smiles of the resort staff, and was even shocked by a pronouncement of “Nag-unsa ka dinhi, IRENE?!” LOL. Laughing though, I found out it was Ms. Christine Jardin who was a classmate of mine back elementary years. She manages the dining section of the resort. Whoa, I can remember the years

where my classmates and I are still playing “Sun, Moon, Earth” in our elementary school’s porch years back and look now, I am always amazed when I get to meet my old classmates and learn that they succeed in their line of profession.

We dine inside.

Actually, it was just a light lunch. Their Pancit Guisado is so delicious.

There are a lot more that I have seen in the menu.

The frequent whirring of printers in offices - despite the Internet, Microsoft Word, social media (I love Facebook and Twitter), scanners, smart phones applications and many much more - attest to that.

I am very much old fashioned in many things. I was still typing on an old manual typewriter, when my colleagues in different publishing houses used already electric units.

I loved my antique typewriter. I love it till today. Yes, it’s still here in my office in Davao City. I can’t use it anymore, because no more ribbons are available in the Philippines. It’s okay.

My electric typewriter is also here. Just beside the manual unite. Those were the days, my love... .

It has been sometimes at the end of the 1990’s. I worked

in an international publishing house in Berlin with branches in Amsterdam and New York. I still used one of those wonderful electric type writers - and tried to avoid vehemently a personal computer. Already during that time I needed to hold paper in my hands. Paper, says the productivity expert David Allen, is “in your face”. I strongly agree with David.

He said, “Its physical presence can be a goal to completing tasks, whereas computer files can easily be hidden and thus forgotten. I am also returning to paper planners for this very reason. Please, don’t laugh at me, my dear readers!

David Allen, the author of “Getting Things Done”, does much of his writing on a computer. So I do meanwhile. But, there are still times when writing with a fountain pen on a notepad. It allows “us” to get “our” heads in the right place.

When I tried to learn more from David Allen,

I really got surprised, that we have many things in common. Old fashioned or not? I don’t care. Here are some facts: Paper print outs serve an important function.

For long texts, a print out can allow a reader to better understand relationships between sections and writings.

Paper handouts are still a presence at meetings partly because they are useful for taking notes. Reading a long document on paper rather than on a computer screen helps people “better understand the geography of the argument contained within, “said Richard H.R. Harper, a principal researcher for Microsoft in Cambridge/England and co-author with Abigail J. Sellen of “The Myth of the Paperless Office,” published already in 2001.

I also strongly agree with Sellen, saying, that using more than one computer screen can be helpful for all this cognitive juggling.

BREAKING GENDER STEREOTYPES: With Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi at the helm, the DOE continues to promote gender equality and gender development in the energy sector.

DOE’s resource speaker for its ENEREADY project, Engr. Katrina Mae S. Royo of MERALCO, asked the students about their perception on women working in the energy sector, which drew several responses. According to them, the energy sector is a man’s world and available jobs present more challenges to women than men.

According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the female gender only represents 28% of the total enrollment in engineering and other technical courses

from the period 2011-2016.

In an effort to balance the gender fulcrum in the sector, the DOE devised the project to encourage students to pursue a profession based on their passion, knowledge and skills, and not on gender stereotypes which limit technical careers to a certain gender.

nderscoring the importance of the early detection of HIV for the commemoration of World AIDS Day, LoveYourself in collaboration with the Pasay City Social Hygiene Clinic conducted an HIV testing campaign at the Senate of the Philippines on 29 November 2016 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00p.m.

This is in response to the initiative of the Office of the Senator Risa Hontiveros being the Senate Committee Chairperson on Health and Demography, who is also thrusting for the amendments of the Republic Act No. 8504 or also known as “Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998.”

According to Sen. Hontiveros, the HIV testing day at the Senate aims to encourage more people to look at HIV test as a regular diagnostic tool, such as, blood pressure check-up and urinalysis, to know one’s health status and live a healthy lifestyle.

As LoveYourself and its partners introduce PrEP in the country, Dr. Gundo emphasized that “Key populations [MSMs & the Youth] need to stand up and mobilize for their right to take control of their own health and of their own lives to prevent HIV transmission.” Moreover, Dr. Gundo said that the key populations who are affected by the epidemic are also the populations that holds the key in turning around the epidemic.

Contributing to the World AIDS Day celebration on 1 December, HIV prevention advocacy group LoveYourself, Inc. introduces the PreExposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV in the Philippines during the #HackingHIV event on Tuesday night (29 November) at MyCinema Greenbelt 3 in this city.

PrEP is an HIV medicine from the combination of “tenofovir and emtricitabine” which is taken daily to lower the chances of contracting the virus.

Supported by Philippine Department of Health-Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (DOH-RITM), American Foundation for AIDS Research and the World Health Organization (WHO),

LoveYourself was the chosen organization to pioneer the launching of PrEP in the Philippines under the banner program #PrEPPilipinas in which initial demonstration is envisioned to be executed within the first quarter of 2017.

Following the stagnating number of HIV cases around the globe, WHO Country Representative Dr. Gundo Weiler observed that “The situation in the Philippines is much more dramatic, because the number never went down. It’s only going up and it’s right to say so even in an exponential manner.”

By bringing PrEP to the Philippines, Dr. Weiler said “People are very much capable to take care of their own health if we give people the means to do so…

PrEP is one additional important choice [for HIV prevention] that will empower people [the Filipinos].”

According to Dr. Rosanna A. Ditangco, Head of AIDS Research Group of DOH-RITM & Primary Investigator of PrEPPilipinas, “The program is basically a demonstration project on a communityled HIV prevention strategy for MSMs [males-having-sexwith-males],” which will be spearheaded

by LoveYourself, and will have a pilot implementation in Manila and a plan to roll out to the rest of the country.

Dr. Ditangco explained that “PrEP is effective and it is safe,” but highlighted the importance of community acceptability.

“We are embarking on a demonstration project that would precisely document the effectiveness of PrEP –the acceptability and feasibility in the real world environment,” said Dr. Ditangco.

Co-primary investigator of the PrEP Pilipinas project and LoveYourself Senior Director Christopher M. Lagman emphasized that “PrEP shouldn’t be taken as a replacement to current prevention measures, but an option and another level of protection to avoid getting HIV.” Targeting the mostvulnerable populations for this new HIV prevention measure, Lagman relayed that LoveYourself will not just distribute PrEP to people, but will ensure a holistic service approach HIV/PAGE 11

PHINMA COC’s Full Scholarship Grant has the following terms and conditions: The grantees of Full Scholarship prizes will be given to top 5 winners of the following categories for High School journalists: News Writing, Feature; Photo Journalism; Sports Writing and Science Reporting.

The scholarship prize covers Tuition, Miscellaneous, Laboratory, and other fees except books, uniforms, and other School fees. The Scholarship is valid only for the regular duration of the course, 4-year for regular Bachelor’s degree or 5-year for Engineering courses.

Phinma-COC requires that the awardeerecipient must be current Grade 11 student during the competition and must maintain grades not lower than 2.25 in all subjects. Otherwise, the Scholarship will be downgraded to 50% on Tuition and Miscellaneous only, according to Phinma.

Also, shifting to other course will be allowed only once but the duration of the Scholarship remains the same on the original course enrolled.

The Grade 11 winners must avail the Scholarship on June 2018 at Phinma’s Carmen or Puerto Campus. The scholarship grant is non-transferable and non-convertible to cash, according to PhinmaCOC, and grantees must be in good moral standing and must not have disciplinary action during his or her entire stay in PHINMA COC. The Scholarship cannot be used with any other Scholarship or Discounts offered by PHINMA COC. Half Scholarship Grants For the PHINMA COC Half Scholarship Grant, it is Mindanao Daily who will endorse grantees of the Five Half Scholarships.

This scholarship covers 50% on Tuition and Miscellaneous only excluding Laboratory, other fees, books,

uniforms, and other School merchandise. It is valid for incoming College Freshmen only.

Current PHINMA COC students, Transferees, and Returnees are not covered by this Grant.

The Half Scholarship is valid only for the regular duration of the course 4-year for regular Bachelor’s degree or 5-year for Engineering courses, and No maintaining Grade is required for this Scholarship; and shifting to other course is allowed only once but the duration of the Scholarship remains the same on the original course enrolled.
