n this point of my life, I have appreciated intimate celebrations, the ones that made up with people who are living witness to your life over the years; who clapped with your successes, tapped your back when you are needed to, and listened and offered shoulders when you were down.

Cagayan de Oro hosts 1st Travel XChange The B2B Event The 1st ever B2B travel event in Northern Mindanao will gather top stakeholders of the travel and tourism industry from Regions 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 in Cagayan de Oro City (CGY) on February 21 and 22, 2018.

’ve watched the news lately and as always, I pity people living in Metro Manila for the worst traffic conditions they experience every day.

I can just imagine the stress and tiredness they feel after working and traveling home for hours. Even shopping which is a stressreliever for some can be dreadful experience if you are caught up in a traffic jam! I count myself lucky to be in the province but sometimes, traffic jams are becoming a norm in Cagayan De Oro City too.

The inf lux of

business and investors in the city is a mark of the city’s economic boom and development.

More and more people are moving to the central business district for career advancement, and more people and families are also buying cars for their convenience. I should be really happy about this good news about CDO, however, having to experience traffic congestions during rush hours and on holidays make me think otherwise.

Not all people have the patience to endure long hours sitting inside a car stuck in

the middle of the road.

This is many people are looking for living options away from the busy streets of the city center. CDO Uptown district is slowly but surely booming with new commercial hubs, economic zone, shopping malls and residential properties.

GSIS posts greater benefit payout for first 11 mos of 2017 State pension fund Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) today announced that it paid more than Php85 billion in social insurance claims and benefits in the first 11 months this year, representing a 13% increase compared to the Php75.1 billion in the same period last year. These claims and benefits cover pension, retirement, life insurance, survivorship, disability, and funeral.

The growth is attributed to the increased monthly old age pension of Php7.5

billion covering 316,323 pensioners, survivorship benefit amounting to Php338.2 million for 132,449 pensioners, as well as life insurance and retirement claims of Php616.8 million and Php980.2 million, respectively.

The number of life insurance claims processed also rose 21.2%, to reach 82,936 in the first 11 months of the year from 68,401; while the number of retirement claims processed grew 9.2% at 34,489 from 31,592 in the same period.

Ayala Business Club CDO, OPS give back with Kawyagan sa Marawi T he Ayala Business Club of Cagayan de Oro and the Oro Photographic Society recently joined hands for a two-day exhibit of Maranao arts and crafts at the Centrio Mall Activity Center on December 11-12, 2017.

Dubbed “Kawyagan sa Marawi”, the livelihood exhibit highlighted the artistry of the Maranao people to raise funds for a number of livelihood and psycho-social projects focused on the return of normalcy.

“The need to rebuild starts from building a firm base to stand on and it is imperative to focus on the needs of its citizens and livelihood projects,” said Eric Gabiana, ABC-CDO Vice President.

“We, the Ayala Business Club Cagayan de Oro Chapter would like to ensure that a torch remains fixed on the positive spirit of Marawi. Work has begun on a number of livelihood and psycho-social projects focused on the return to normalcy, and rebuilding not just structures, but the people, culture, and history of the city.”

“Today, we put a spotlight on the hard work, dedication and never-ending resolve of the Maranao,” Gabiana said.

“Traditional crafting skills passed down from generation to generation, weaving a cacophony of colors to make beautiful malongs and extravagantly detailed bauls, these are the trades that refuse to be affected by the chaos and uncertainty.”

For their part, the Oro Photographic Society played a key role in the realization of the event through their walkthrough exhibit capturing the “sights and ingenuity” of the Maranao People. Dr. Vic Orencia, OPS outgoing

president, shared how their members contributed their time and talent to come up with images which were sold during the exhibit to raise funds for the project.

However, Salika Samad , who together with her husband Master Weaver Jardin runs The Maranao Collectibles , admits it is an uphill battle to sustain the traditional arts and crafts of the Maranao.

“Even before the siege started, we were already problems getting young people to get interested in continuing our traditional arts and crafts,” Samad said. “With the higher education many young people are now getting from the Mindanao State University (where she is a graduate), many of them are more interested to pursue other careers outside Marawi City and the Lanao provinces.”

On another aspect, Jardin Samad said they have a constantly growing inventory of fabrics and textiles which many people seem to be appreciative of, but don’t buy.

Kawyagan sa Marawi exhibited hand-made bauls, brassware, hand-woven malongs, and other fabrics expertly done by Maranao artisans.

Also featured were traditional Maranao food items like the Pater, Beef Papait, Manok a Pindiyalokan, Beef Randang, Palapa, Bakas f lakes, Browa, and Lokatis, which happily were all snapped up before the end of the day by enthusiastic buyers.

“Over the years, Ayala has expanded its footprint across the country, finding innovative and sustainable business solutions for some of the country’s most

important challenges,” said Celerina Rosales– Amores, Ayala Foundation’s Senior Director for Corporate Communications.

A ridiculous fact A mistaken belief accompanies us each and every second of our life. Incorrect decisions and wrong doings are part of our daily life.

It is almost a ridiculous fact that man wants to know certain truths about mundane things. But really, he seems least interested in even mundane truths as can be read many times in our daily newspapers or online for example. There seem to be too much rash judgments, and the readers absorb these and make these their own. A fatal attraction!

This is sometimes referred to as journalistic mentality wherein accusations are generously made without proof.

Evolution started this trend, when scientists stated for example that man evolved from the apes - without proof. The only proof they had was the missing link, and, if I am not mistaken, it’s still a missing proof until now.

To look for proofs is a mental activity, which is no longer a common thing nowadays, because it takes really time, effort and is too serious to think about. Yet in Christian education, thinking right is very important.That’s why Philosophy is important in Christian life. To avoid error in thinking, the rules of right reasoning must be studied and mastered. It is really totally neglected in today’s modern education?

Thinking is actually an enjoyable activity but when one is pressured to get a good job for one’s sustenance, then the other more mundane become attractive. After all, great

thinkers many time Have My Say do not get (good?) jobs... .

Spiritual writers like the British Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) noticed that mankind had stopped thinking even two centuries Klaus Doring ago. Wow. That was during his age.

Man probably stopped thinking even earlier. He has ceased many times to search for the truth. It’s easier to listen to gossip and believe in it. What a sign of weak minds!

Too often are we blind to the truth. As a consequence, we easily believe in lies we only have to like it. MilkTrack: Solving the problem of breast milk scarcity, one area at a time T

he importance and value of breast milk for newborn or sick babies can never be understated.

Stories have been written numerous times as to how babies’ lives have depended much on the availability of breast milk while its scarcity brought dire consequences.

As a research project undergraduate, Kevin Facun and his team were tasked to create innovative solutions to answer basic problems in his community in Malolos, Bulacan.

One of these concerns involved health care, particularly in hospitals in his home town where he noticed a peculiar need for breast milk.

Facun said they visited neonatal units and saw how breast milk is considered a basic necessity for babies for them to survive. “We heard lots of stories on the need for breastmilk, especially for premature babies and it’s so hard to find trusted sources. What most people and mothers don’t know is that breast milk is very important for premature or sick babies because formula milk is hard to digest.”

The Philippine Milk Code strictly implements breastfeeding in all hospitals nationwide, but the lack of available breast milk is still prevalent, particularly in government hospitals. He said that there are 11 milk banks nationwide and only four are government owned. Private milk banks sell breast milk at P500 per bag, and a baby needs at least 3 bags a day. “So you can imagine how hard it is, especially among mothers from poor families. There’s really a huge demand but supply is limited. Couple this with lack of awareness and education so we came up with an application to help for supply to cope with the demand because we know that saving lives is of importance,” declares Facun.

Thus, Facun’s team came up with “MilkTrack,” a mobile application that will facilitate the logistical and information dissemination concerns when it comes to sourcing breast milk. Among its key features are information focused on storage of milk, proper expression and others that aim to correct common misconceptions about breast milk, plus a breastfeeding location tracker through Global Positioning System (GPS) that can zero in on government establishments, some malls and even academic institutions where breastfeeding stations are

“We follow the guidelines of the Philippine Human Milk Bank. Mother donors need to undergo a strict testing process on HIV and Hepatitis B. We also track the medical records of donor applicants. We started this in our area in Malolos, Bulacan that served as a pilot community.”

MilkTrack received a big break when it was picked as one of the top five winners of Globe Future Makers Program which seeks to influence and build a whole ecosystem of social innovators. The program received 135 entries from individuals and startups from all over the country who want to make a difference in society through the use of technology.

“We know that the award will take us to an even better place to help realize our dream.

With the magnificent partners at Globe, Ashoka, and Kickstart and their invaluable mentoring, we are confident that we will realize that dream,” Facun said.

“We believe in the advocacy of Milktrack and what they want to achieve. Globe wants to build a better world and espouse the creation of social innovators and game-changers in order to create a brighter tomorrow especially for the next generation,” said Chelle Gray, Director for Globe Citizenship.

MilkTrack plans to put up its own facility instead of going to the nearest milk bank to have the milk pasteurized.

“Other than selling the product, we wanted a modern-day bayanihan initiative because this concerns the lives of mothers and babies. Through crowdsourcing, we want this to eventually resort to a healthier nation,” he said.

Facun figured its best to focus on his hometown first within 3 months but they are already eyeing Metro Manila since it has the biggest and greatest demand. The Philippine General Hospital alone, he said, needs at least 10 liters of breast milk per day.

Although MilkTrack primarily operates through its mobile app and website, Facun said there are also plans to establish a direct partnership with hospitals and doctors, with priority on Pediatrics and Obstetrics-Gynecology because they already have the network.

Don’t put that Christmas tree away!

The Christmas season has just begun The liturgical season of Christmas starts on December 25 and lasts through January.

It can be a little confusing. In secular society, Christmas is celebrated around the time of Halloween up until Christmas Day. On the day after Christmas all the decorations are put away and Christmas trees are put on the curb.

However, in the Roman Catholic Church, the liturgical season of Christmas does not start until December 25 (including the vigil celebrated on December 24) and lasts through January.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) explains how, “The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him…including the fact that he was born to die for us.”

This is where it can get a little more confusing as the Baptism of the Lord is a moveable feast, depending on the day when Epiphany falls in the Roman calendar.

For those dioceses that

celebrate Epiphany on January 6, the Baptism of the Lord falls on the Sunday after it. In other places where Epiphany is celebrated on the first Sunday that falls from January 2 through January 8, then the Baptism of the Lord could occur either on the following Sunday, or on a Monday (this happens if Epiphany is celebrated on January 7 or 8).

The latest that the Baptism of the Lord can occur is January 13.

Ordinary Time starts on the day after this feast.

This means that during certain years, Christmas lasts from December 25 – January 13!

If you want to celebrate the historical Christmas cycle, it extends even past the Baptism of the Lord. Traditionally the feast of Candlemas (the Presentation of the Lord) occurs on February 2 and marked the final conclusion of the Christmas cycle.

This is because Candlemas celebrates an event that occurred 40 days after Jesus’ birth and was his first introduction to the Temple. In other words, it is the final “baby Jesus” feast day on the Church’s liturgical calendar.

In some places people did keep up Christmas

decorations like the creche until February 2, though it is probably not advisable to keep your Christmas tree up for that long (it may be a fire hazard at that point).

“At home in Bavaria, we get ready for Christmas on the 1st Sunday of Advent (earliest on 27 November), with St. Nikolaus bringing some sweets on the eve of 5 December,” said Dr. Robert J. Holmer, a longtime resident of Balubal, Cagayan de Oro City.

“The Christmas tree is usually set up on the evening of 24 December only (with Christ Child bringing the gifts) and stands until 6 January (Three Kings). In some families, the Christmas tree stands until 2 February (Presentation of Jesus at the Temple), but since most of us are using real pine trees, the needles won't stay that long on the tree.”

Technically speaking, if you truly want to celebrate Christmas like Christians in ages past, you wouldn’t decorate the house until Christmas Eve and then keep everything up until February 2.

This is very different from Christmas celebrations today!

TXS commemorates Christmas in Linda Manalo’s “Panunuluyan”

hristmas celebrates the birth of Christ. While the Gospels of Mark and Luke in the New Testament chronicle this story from the annunciation to the nativity, it has become the centerpiece and inspiration for magnificent and remarkable works in literature, art, film, and contemporary culture.

Linda Manalo’s adaptation, performed onstage by The Xavier Stage on December 14 and 15, 2017 within Xavier Ateneo’s Little Theater, did not veer from the narrative of the source material. Instead, it reflected the perennial societal ills that had plagued the generations before, during, and after Christ’s birth, some of which still exist in present day.

“This is the greatest story of all time,” the promotional article (http://www.xu.edu.ph/ xcca-activities/3024xcca-and-txs-lindamanalo-s-panunuluyandirected-by-hobartsavior) stated, “for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” The Aspect of God’s Love Panunuluyan is part of TXS’s Aspects of Love series for the university’s academic year. The series presents plays written and adapted by local playwrights.

Suzuki Vitara GLX named 2017 Best Subcompact Crossover C

Faithful to Suzuki SUV’s original styling, the exterior design of the new Vitara exudes a strong yet sophisticated presence achieved through the modernized Suzuki SUV signature clamshell bonnet. The side press lines and smooth roofline suggest a youthful, rugged look, and strong aerodynamic performance, respectively, complemented by the

rear that gives off a stable look.

The new Vitara has an overall width of 1,775mm, height of 1,610mm, length of 4,175mm and a minimum ground clearance of 185mm, making it the longest and widest in its class with the best turning radius performance.

The interiors combine muscular contours and a sporty feel. The instrument panel conveys a youthful look with its upper linear design that includes a round clock and a round air outlet.

The seats use highquality fabric, with the GLX model featuring a combination of leather and suede-type fabric for an even classier feel. The Vitara GLX also features a panoramic sunroof designed with two glass panels that can be both slid to provide the biggest

opening in its class and added premium to the unit.

The interior design fuses comfort and utility.

All variants feature 6-speed automatic transmission, paddle shifter and audio steering control.

The new Vitara’s Infotainment audio system ensures a more enjoyable ride. Besides handsfree connectivity, the system packs navigation, Bluetooth audio and a USB port.

The GLX variant enable on-the-go connectivity through its Wi-Fi support while the MirrorLink function links the rider’s smartphone with the SUV’s Android based infotainment system.

It model’s 6-point airbag system comprising of dual, curtain and side airbags for the driver and passenger provides greater protection.

The Vitara also features cruise control system and speed limiter, ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers with reverse camera that detect obstacles during parking, an automatic light system that turns headlamps and tail lamps on and off, and automatic wipers triggered depending on the extent of rainfall and vehicle speed.

The SUV’s electronic stability program (ESP) automatically controls the engine torque and brakes upon detection of a wheelslip to ensure the driver maintains directional control. The hillhold control helps the driver to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward on an upward climb.

In the event of a collision, the new Vitara has an impact-absorbing design focused on the front bumpers. The brake pedal release system limits the pedal’s movement toward the driver in case of a frontal impact. For further protection for the occupants, the Vitara’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) absorbs impact and the seatbelts use force limiter to mitigate impact to the chest.

Boasting the lightest curb weight in its category, the new Vitara delivers enhanced fuel efficiency. The SUV’s updated 1.6-liter engine is designed to deliver the highest torque performance of 156Nm at 4,400rpm and best
