he Ayala Business Club of Cagayan de Oro and the Oro Photographic Society recently joined hands for a two-day exhibit of Maranao arts and crafts at the Centrio Mall Activity Center on December 11-12, 2017. Dubbed “Kawyagan sa Marawi”, the livelihood exhibit highlighted the artistry of the Maranao people to raise funds for a number of livelihood and psycho-social projects focused on the return of normalcy. “The need to rebuild starts from building a firm base to stand on and it is imperative to focus on the needs of its citizens and livelihood projects,” said Eric Gabiana, ABC-CDO Vice President. “We, the Ayala Business Club Cagayan de Oro Chapter would like to ensure that a torch
remains fixed on the positive spirit of Marawi. espite the prevailing weather the past few days, the city’s oldest business district lit up last December 19 with the 4th edition of the Pasko de Oro and Paskorela Parade. Postponed earlier due to the rainy weather, there was no stopping the marching bands of three of the city’s elementary schools and 10 contestants to the Paskorela competition which brought Christmas cheer to Plaza Divisoria and its surrounding streets with its short parade and palabas. Special prizes were awarded to the participating marching bands with the Bulua Central School being adjudged as the “Best in Christmas Accents”, City Central School “Best in Musicality” and P.N. Roa Elementary School “Most Disciplined”. The steering
committee also awarded individuals from the three banks among them Jessica Tanio (Best Band Majorette, P.N. Roa Elementary School), Sofia Kareem Caayao (Best Band Master, Bulua Central School) and James David D. Marquezo (Best Performance by a Band Master, P.N. Roa Elementary School). The Paskorela Board of Judges composed of Architect Ma. Linda Escaba, Fashion Designers Guild of Cagayan de Oro President Mark Christopher Yaranon and Performance Artist Nicolas Aca as chairman awarded the top three Paskorelas based on the following criteria: Design (25%), Creativity (25%), Production Elements (25%) and Overall Impact (25%). ongs from the ‘50s to the ‘70s will turn the spotlight on a present-day tragedy half the world away but whose human face hits home for Filipino Americans. “Music & Mercy for Marawi,” a concert to raise funds for the civilian victims of the Philippine government’s escalating war against ISIS-allied Muslim militants, will be held on February 10, 2018 at the Philippine Cultural Center, 4857 Baxter Road, Virginia Beach. VA 23462. The Band of Brothers, popular young musicians from Manila, will headline the concert and rock the venue with chart-toppers by the Beatles, Herman’s Hermits, the Four Seasons, and other hit makers of the past. But for the thousands of displaced Filipinos in Marawi City and surrounding areas on the island of Mindanao, the funds raised could not come at a better time. The humanitarian crisis has not abated.
“I really can’t say when we will be able to finish [the battle],” said Philippine Marines Brig. Gen. Melquiades Ordiales. According to the Red Cross and other sources, the series of firefights that started in May has so far displaced more than 300,000 civilians and claimed over 700 lives. More than 1,700 residents of battle-zone villages have been rescued to date, but many more were trapped between government troops and the insurgents. Compounding the rising casualty rate is the specter of hunger, homelessness and disease for young and old, Muslim and Christian. Marawi’s hospital and emergency facilities have been devastated by the hostilities, crippling services for crisis victims. Proceeds from “Music & Mercy for Marawi” will be used to load a 40-ft. seaworthy container with lifesaving, used but fully functional hospital equipment
and supplies, and to ship it to Mindanao, roughly 640 miles south of Manila, the Philippine capital. But funds are not just earmarked for the content of the container and its logistics; other costs include trucking from the port city of Davao to refugee camps. Concert organizers are coordinating on the humanitarian project with the nonprofit Montero Medical Missions (MMM), led by Filipino American physician, Dr. Juan M. Montero, II, originally from Surigao del Sur. The organization sends medical missions outside the United States to help alleviate the human toll of war as well as natural calamities. It creates sustainable healthcare projects with physicians and allied health professionals who have domestic and international roots, sharing healthcare services on the home front and abroad. MMM recently created three sustainable healthdriven projects for
US and overseas populations in need of specific healthcare services: Eyesight 20/20, an initiative on Dental Health, and a Prosthetic/ Orthotics project. There is a plan to launch the mission’s fourth humanitarian aid project, with diabetes screening and prevention as its core service. As with other humanitarian ventures, partnerships are critical to the success of the “Music & Mercy for Marawi” concert in Virginia Beach and the mission to Mindanao. A total of 50 children adopted by the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro were feted with a zoo trip and an early dinner at McDonald’s Limketkai after last Thursday. Project chair Chazz Ladera of DOT 10 said the Day of Children has been going on for 12 years now and has been a yearly project of the regional office of the tourism department every Christmas season. For this year, the children woke up at 6:00 in the morning to start their trip towards Mantianak Zoological and Botanical Park in Sugbongcogon, Misamis Oriental where they were welcomed by the mayor herself, Mildred Mondigo. After the children were satisfied interacting with the 186 different species of both endemic and foreign exotic animals including Siberian tigers, snakes,
guineas, etc., they were surprised wih toys by Mondigo. In the afternoon, the convoy of kids trooped back to Cagayan de Oro, winding up at McDonald’s Limketkai. There, DOT had another surprise for them – a bag of full of toiletries and assorted chocolates. They also had door prizes in kiddie games initiated by McDonald’s Limketkai. Ladera conceptualized the program to give the children as well as the in/ out of school youths the opportunity to mingle and adjust with other children in the community and to familiarize and be aware of the entry and exit points of trafficking. For that, the children detoured for a few minutes at the gate outside the Port of Cagayan de Oro where Ladera reminded them never to mingle with strangers especially if they are lured into distant trips.

Sovereign - emerging Kpop group December 24-30, 2017

EING confident. Patient. Adept in socializing. Sound time management. Five 17-yearold ladies have mastered these qualities in one unorthodox way - being in a Kpop cover group. Back when they were still eighth graders in 2014, these idolaters of Girls Generation - Yuvi Rociandel Luardo, Zsamaica Ajoc, Charlotte Faye Mejia, Jenny Lou Cubillas and Shan Trisha Allawan - who were all friends at Regional Science High School discovered that they still had one commonality apart from their camaraderie Kpop. Young as they
were, it was so easy to dance. All they had to learn was dance the Kpop way. In a few weeks they were ready that they decided to form a group. They christened their group Sovereign, named after their idols Girls Generation who were and still are the Queens of Kpop now. In a world where Pink Step and Siren dominated Kpop dancing in CDO back then, Sovereign slowly made their prints and danced head on with their ates. April 13, 2014 was a memorable day - they participated in their first big Kpop event, Hallyu in CDO 2.0.

From thence, things began to move up. Sovereign became Top 3 in the SM Entertainment Festival last May 2015 at Limketkai Center both for vocal cover and dance cover.
A few months after, they became champions this time at a Kpop fiesta event in Iligan. Earlier this year now that they’re in senior high, Sovereign became
champions once again in a Tagoloan event. On the road, in between rehearsals and studies, the teens have balanced their time well and even excelling in school. They
have overcome their stage fright and are natural smilers. All these they have acquired through Kpop. Well they are still 17. Sovereign still has a long way enjoying up. Slay, ladies.
A ridiculous fact A mistaken belief accompanies us each and every second of our life. Incorrect decisions and wrong doings are part of our daily life. It is almost a ridiculous fact that man wants to know certain truths about mundane things. But really, he seems least interested in even mundane truths as can be read many times in our daily newspapers or online for example. There seem to be too much rash judgments, and the readers absorb these and make these their own. A fatal attraction! This is sometimes referred to as journalistic mentality wherein accusations are generously made without proof. Evolution started this trend, when scientists stated for example that man evolved from the apes - without proof. The only proof they had was the missing link, and, if I am not mistaken, it’s still a missing proof until now. To look for proofs is a mental activity, which is no longer a common thing nowadays, because it takes really time, effort and is too serious to think about. Yet in Christian education, thinking right is very important.That’s why Philosophy is important in Christian life. To avoid error in thinking, the rules of right reasoning must be studied and mastered. It is really totally neglected in today’s modern education? Thinking is actually an enjoyable activity but when one is pressured to get a good job for one’s sustenance, then the other more

Vision Petron presents 2017 roster of winners F
rom among thousands of entries that highlighted the Filipinos’ unique skills, talents, and strengths, Petron Corporation has named the winners of its 2017 student art competition Vision Petron with the theme “Tuklas Kagalingan.” The awarding was held last November 23 at the Old Senate Hall of the National Museum. For this year, 62 young artists from all over the country were recognized in the following categories: painting (watercolor), painting (oil/acrylic), photography, t-shirt design, video-making, and music. The grand prize winners in the painting category took home P70,000.00 in cash and an Abueva trophy. The runners-up, meanwhile, received P30,000.00 and a Vision Petron trophy, while the semi-finalists received P5,000.00. In the photography category, the grand prize winners were awarded P50,000.00 in cash and
an Abueva plaque, while the runners-up received P25,000.00. Finally, in the t-shirt design, video-making, and music categories, the grand prize winners each won P50,000.00 and an Abueva plaque. All winners received a certificate and a gift pack from Petron. The top 5 schools with the most number of entries were also recognized during the awards’ ceremonies. These are St. Louis University (Baguio),
Technological University of the Philippines (Manila), Technological Institute of the Philippines (Quezon City), Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (Manila), and STI College Muñoz EDSA. Each school received a certificate, a printer, and gift bag from Petron, while the schools of the grand prize winners received a brand-new computer. The winners were also given the opportunity
to meet this year’s esteemed panel of judges led by National Artist for Painting Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, who served as chairman in the painting category. The other judges for painting were Jose Tence Ruiz, Raul Isidro, Felice Sta. Maria, Justin Nuyda, and Robert Besana, the grand prize winner in the oil/ acrylic painting category of the first ever Vision Petron competition, then known as Art Petron.
