4 years of Sendong, people left in havoc F our years after Typhoon Sendong struck, the Aquino administration remains negligent on the state’s responsibility to resolve the typhoon’s damage and losses. We, the League of Filipino Students in Northern Mindanao Region (LFS-NMR), express strong condemnation against the state’s criminal negligence on its snailpacing rehabilitation to the Sendong-stricken areas, where up until now are lacking of basic services and descent response. Out of the 37,552 houses which had been fully devastated during Sendong, the government only installed 6,890 relocation houses – still lacking of electric and water supply, livelihood and basic social services. “This record shows how inept the Aquino administration is and on its incapability of implementing responsible actions towards the victims of Sendong,” said Kristine Cabardo, Spokesperson of LFS-NMR. At the same time, we convey outrage at the Aquino administration’s lack of political will in developing and implementing

a comprehensive disaster response program and decry its reactive approach to handling calamities and emergencies. The devastation happened notwithstanding repeated warnings and studies on the effects and impact of environmental degradation and climate change; An environmental crisis, caused by unregulated large-scale mining, logging and quarrying, coupled with the Aquino government’s budget cuts on disaster preparedness and other social services created the conditions for such a calamity. “The government downplayed its role by providing only bandaid solutions through their unsustainable relief materials, while environmental destruction hasn’t been pointed out as the main culprit,” Cabardo explained. We lament that the lessons from Sendong are being continuously unheeded, resulting in another painful disaster that wrought havoc to lives and properties – the typhoon Pablo, Yolanda, Seniang, Lando, Nona, and more reported disasters. 2,546 death was

recorded during Sendong, 1,901 during Pablo, and 6,300 during Yolanda. We can’t afford another Sendong, nor Pablo and Yolanda to happen. But the government shows that it is incapable and negligent to resolve this calamity issues. Hence, never be denied that the current system does not serve the interests of its people but is rather zealous of serving the demands of its ‘bosses’ - the local and foreign profit-greed capitalists. “We could anticipate more disaster under this disastrous administration for compromising its local and foreign business ventures, while expensing the lives of its people,” Cabardo added. LFS-NMR urged the youth and student sector to be in solidarity with the victims of typhoon Sendong and all other disasters which took thousands of lives of the Filipinos. More than lighting candles and offering flowers, we should be one with the people in demanding justice for the victims of state’s criminal negligence. JUSTICE FOR THE VICTIMS OF SENDONG!

avier University held its annual commemoration of the feast of its patroness, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, with two major events — a religious concert and a communal procession with a high mass. The XU community and Kagay-anons watched the concert featuring the “Inspirational Diva” Jamie Rivera held at the Limketkai Atrium on December 6 dubbed as “We are God’s Children,” named after the theme song of Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines earlier this year. In the concert, glee clubs from XU Grade School, High School and College performed as part of the front act together with the Singers for Christ, Friends and Music, the XU-United Religious Organization (URO) and the Moorjani Sisters. CDO Archbishop Antonio Ledesma SJ DD, XU president Fr. Bobby Yap SJ, XU VP for Mission and Ministry Irene Grace Guitarte and XU VP for Academic

Affairs Fr. Rene Tacastacas SJ, among other personalities graced the concert with their presence. The Jesuit Community of the Loyola House also witnessed the performances of the evening led by its rector, Fr. Mars Tan SJ. Part of the proceeds of the concert will go to the Project Assist of the XU Alumni Affairs Office, the major partner of the University Chaplaincy Office (UCO) for this event. The concert was staged under the musical direction of Rexur Sabuga-a, technical direction of Hobart Savior, stage direction of Omar Tan and in cooperation with Nico Pimentel‘s Zen Events Story Buddies. Aside from the concert, the school community joined the procession along Divisoria Avenue, which was followed by a high mass celebrated by Arcbhp. Ledesma at the University Church of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The UCO expressed

its gratitude to the people and groups who were instrumental to the success of the two events, namely the XU Church staff,

chaplaincy volunteers, campus chapel aides, XU-URO members, student assistants, and the different classes and departments who

participated. The two events served as the university’s tribute to the Blessed Mother whom the Catholic community continuously

seek for help and intercession as part of the journey towards “our heavenly home with God.”

Christmas and Vacation

During the Christmas holidays, we tend to be caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, that we sometimes forget the essence of Christmas. We even remove Christ from the word Christmas reducing it to X’mas or substituting it with a name of a product or a shopping center.” Yes, guys, honestly, that’s it... I really don’t enjoy received “XMAS GREETINGS”... . Somehow, I am glad looking forward to a two weeks vacation “between the years” - meaning to say between December 23 and January 7. No teaching at University of Southeastern Philippines, although most students wish to be prepared for their January exam in Manila. I might spend only a very office hours in my agency office. A rest from some occupation, business and other stressful activities is waiting for me. Strictly speaking, vacation concerns those who are in school or studying in colleges and universities. “Furlough” would be the appropriate term... . Christmas and vacation: Speaking about

Christmas songs in full blasts, shopping in malls dominate the days, caroling here and there, group dancing, partying, drinking, family dining in restaurants, choral renditions, shouting, merrymaking noises all these roll into one lively environment around the world as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The nine-day novena has just began which means early dawn holy masses in churches will be held daily. And these activities will be climaxed by a midnight mass on December 24. Decorated Christmas trees, flashing bulbs, colorful decorations and ornaments can be seen in homes that truly signal the welcoming of the son of God in our homes and

in our hearts. Families are busy wrapping gifts for their children, friends and relatives. Young boys and girls are parading around the community to sing and dance from one house to another and receive tokens such as cash, food and packages. Most malls extend their shopping time up to ten o’clock in the evening to give way to late shoppers who come from their workplaces. In our homes are fruit cakes, rice cakes, frozen delights and many locally-made items that are always served anytime when guests come to exchange greetings and family reunions. In the backdrop are the famous and undying songs of the holiday season rendered by the great Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, and others as well as the great compositions of musical prodigies from Spain, Mexico, Philippines, and other Latin American legends. Adding to the joy of the celebration is the distribution of the 13th month pay otherwise

known as Christmas bonus which is mandated by law. This thing is taking place only in our country and it is unknown in other places around the globe. Some giant corporations even give two bonuses that surely make its employees jump with joy and laughter. We may be sad in some moments of our lives but commemorating Christmas makes our homes glitter with happiness. Smiles are everywhere in the home and outside in public places. Our country being populated by so many Roman Catholic believers as well as other religions that follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ are joining hands to celebrate the season. If we go around and see the many churches celebrating, they will touch your hearts because in there resides our Lord and the glory of his love for mankind. It is so nice to hear the liveliness of people around in grace and responding to the thought of God born during this holiday season. December is the most

anticipated month of the year because of this great celebration to honor our Lord. Church bells are ringing everyday to announce to the people the holding of holy activities in Churches. It is a religious affair that begins in the house of God and end right there. Throughout the year are many big celebrations but there never is one that parallels the way Christmas is undertaken. I wish people who are wealthy enough go down from their level into the world of the poor to cheer them and to let them feel they are part of the celebration. God will be happier to see such relationship exists among us. Even for the duration of the season, we should aspire to give food to the needy and some gifts in form of clothing or pairs of shoes that would awaken the spirits of the people who have less in life. Let us extend our happiness to the people in dark areas, in slums and in squatters places where joy is practically unknown. After all Christ is love and let us shows his love to everyone.

Tangub City: All Ablaze By Judith B. Tablan

TANGUB, Misamis Occidental, In twentythree years, the lights are even more ablaze. Tangub City’s Christmas Symbols Festival started in 1992. It originated from a lighted Christmas tree put up at the city plaza, a wish granted by then young Mayor Philip Tan to his homesick bride Jennifer. The light drew people; some to while away time, friends to get together, and families bring along kids to play around the light. Such was the impact of the light that when the Ten Year Development Plan of the city was formulated, it included,

Participation of mall staff is through donations in cash or in kind, and by sharing their time with respective beneficiaries from the community. This year, ChriSMiles will be held on December 16 and over 200 underprivileged children will be treated to a fun-filled day in celebration of the Christmas season. Beneficiaries include kids from Isla Swerte Day Care Center for SM City Davao; St. Agnes Orphanage, agency personnel and

For the past years, ChriSMiles has brought smiles to thousands of Filipinos nationwide.

Barangay. Gift of Love to the People Bayanihan spirit of the people sustained the project all these years Employees of both local ationand national agencies dig from their own pockets so the spectacular structures at the city plaza could be built. The design and concept of the dazzling display is a collaboration of efforts, time and ingenuity of the group members. Over the years, the intricate and meticulous work in both parols and arches result in fine craftsmanship that impresses viewers and judges. The Christmas symbol is the city government’s gift to the people of Tangub City. Those who have more in life can give material

gifts wrapped in ribbons and frills. But the city officials and employees and the barangay folks give their gifts in terms of effort, time and money in putting up the symbols, arches and parols. The lights that blaze from each of these bring love, joy and peace to everyone. Those who have no decorations at home can go to their arches or around the city plaza to be enveloped by the warmth and light of the Christmas spirit. Thematic Celebration Christmas around the World Part IV is this year’s festival theme. For the past three years, the symbols and arches depict specific land marks of various countries around the world. This is very educational for both the makers and the viewers. They research on the

story and architecture of the landmark. To make it even more fun, the viewer can purchase a mock passport from the City Tourism Office, to be stamped by the Immigration Officer once they get inside the symbol or “country.” Tangub City became known far and wide for its dazzling lights and other family oriented fun and events that last the whole month of December to the first week of January the following year. It all started in love – in granting the wish of a homesick spouse. It grew to leaps and bounds that became a tourist destination not only in Mindanao. Powered by love and bayanihan spirit, the lights will continue to blaze, as the festival’s twenty-fifth year nears. (CIO Tangub)

Women of Sagay, Camiguin spearhead modern-day ‘bayanihan’ December 19-25, 2015

Written by Shaun Alejandrae Yap Uy (DSWD)

Sagay, Camiguin Province – Typhoon Yolanda, internationally known as Haiyan, affected a small town in this province but has paved way for heroines to arise, the spirit of volunteerism becoming evident more than ever. Alfonsa Salva, 52, with neighbor and friend Rhodora Rementizo, 39, volunteered to spearhead the construction of a flood control structure along the relatively dried-up Lambog creek in Purok Camia, Barangay Alangilan, Sagay and is situated near a public school area. Water rushes down the creek from the highlands during the rainy season. Alfonsa is happily married to Roberto Salva Sr. to whom she has four children; Rubie, Roberto Jr., Ricky, and Delf Ryn, while Rhodora is married to Isagani Rementizo, they also have four children Eric, Ruby Mae, Precious, Isagani Jr. They revealed that some of their friends also helped out. There were about 10 women volunteers, together with men volunteers, who initiated and oversaw the construction of a 68-meter flood control structure that will spare the Alangilan Elementary School and in anticipation of the dangers of flash floods during heavy downpour brought about by heavy rains or typhoons. “Ang skwelahan gyud ang proteksyonan, ug ang barangay dayon, sugod June paingon December, mao gyud na ang ting baha-baha diri, mas maayo nang andam” (the school is our main concern, also the barangay, starting June up to December, these are the months when it floods, it’s better to be ready) says Alfonsa. Both were thankful that even if it the project was done during the rainy months, they were still able to finish it, as there were just a few times where it rained hard but never really delayed the construction of the structure. The flood control structure was constructed under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) community-driven program KalahiCIDSS where its main goals include women empowerment and promote gender equality. Alfonsa also said “dako gyud ni nga kontribusyon, makatabang gyud ni pagcontrol sa baha, labi na para sa skwelahan, di na gyud mukanaog pa ang tubig sa eskwelahan dapit tungod ani” (it is a big

contribution; it really helps in controlling the flood, especially for the school, water would no longer overflow to the school area). Alfonsa is a member of the procurement team of the village volunteers who facilitated in the purchasing of construction materials for the project, this among other tasks. The sub-project started in June 2015 and completed on early September of same year. She said that her tasks ranged from canvassing and facilitating bidding processes, and made sure everything is transparent to public and the team. “Kami ray gadala, pinaagi sa among barangay chairman, ug ang mga volunteers” (we are the ones who ran everything, through our barangay chairman, and the volunteers) enthused Alfonsa, adding that she was the designated timekeeper, when that should have been a shifting task with another timekeeper, but most of the volunteers wanted only her to handle it for consistency. Sharing a light moment, both also revealed that the male volunteers also enjoyed their company “malingaw ra man pud sila nga naa mi”. They also revealed that one of the things that made them save on expenses are the boulders that were here in the creek, instead of purchasing, they used the ones available in the project area, as Rhodora also enthused that though it was tough, she had little trouble lifting those boulders during the clearing operations. “Mura gyapo’g lihok namo kai laki, kay pantaypantay ra mi ba, parehas mi tanan ug lihok” (We moved like the men too, because we were even in the tasks, we all did our task) says Rhodora. Rhodora said that one of the toughest tasks was during the clearing of the area which involved lifting rocks and setting them aside before the actual construction, but for most of the time they enjoyed preparing snacks for the volunteers. “Lihok gyud kay aron dali mahuman, pero enjoy man kaayo” (All of us worked so that we can finish the project fast, but it was enjoyable) Rhodora enthused. Alfonsa said that their neighbors, including passersby, saw them enjoying their work, some more volunteers turned up to help and volunteer. Alfonsa and Rhodora

(Left photo) Alfonsa Salva (right) and Rodora Rementizo (left) reminisce the good times they had during the construction of the flood control structure in their village. The community project was done through the DSWD Kalahi-CIDSS program in partnership with the local government unit of Sagay in Camiguin. (Shaun Uy, SMO, KalahiCIDSS, DSWD FO-X)

shared a light moment during the interview and jokingly said “daghan nangapply nga mga lalaki mga gwapo, bantan-on”(many males volunteered, they were handsome and young) before bursting into laughter. Both Alfonsa and Rhodora said that the sub-project management committees, who are all volunteers, were able to maintain transparency in the project implementation. Then and Now Rhodora notes that back in the day, only the elite or wealthy women were actively involved in their village activities. However, poor women like her are now increasingly becoming active in school, church, and community activities. Both affirm that before they were beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program, one of DSWD’s main programs in poverty alleviation through a conditional cash grant, they knew little about disaster prevention, family planning, among others.

Seminars conducted through the Family Development Session of Pantawid Pamilya and Kalahi-CIDSS made them realize that the participation of women in male-dominated projects is about how women are able to access power structures in the organized sub-project management committee and the difference they made out of such participation. Alfonsa said “Full support ang akong bana, pinaagi sa pagtugot niya nako kung naa koy lakaw bahin sa programa sa DSWD, labi na gyud sa Kalahi-CIDSS. Siya ang mopuli sa ako mga pagatiman ug paglimpyo sa panimalay panahon kung tawgon sa mga meeting” (my husband shows full support, by allowing me to go on errands for DSWD programs, especially for the Kalahi-CIDSS. He takes charge of the attending to and cleaning the house whenever we are called for a meeting). Rhodora also affirms, saying “Full support

gyapon siya, iya sad ko tugutan sa mga lakaw sa Kalahi-CIDSS panahon sa meeting, wala siya mi-object ug okay man kaayo among relasyon sa ako bana” (my husband also shows full support, he allows me to go on errands for the Kalahi-CIDSS like meetings, he does not object, our relationship is very okay). Alfonsa adds that before such seminars, they were insecure and thought that they could never do a man’s job, especially in providing for the family financially, “Sa una, dili gyud ko makapalit ug uniform para pang-eskwela sa akong duha ka-anak, pero tungod sa hinabang nga akong nadawat gikan sa Pantawid Pamilya, ga-uniform na sila kung mag-eskwela” (at first, I cannot buy uniforms for my two children, but thanks to the help I received from Pantawid Pamilya, they now go to school in uniforms) adding that how can they help their community if they don’t even have enough money for their family.

“Dako gyud ug tabang ang mga seminar, sa una, ang amo ra gyung bana ug mga anak among ga-alimahan, karon – amo gyapon silang gaatimanon pero karon apil na mi sa mga desisyon sa among panimalay ug sa komunidad” (Before, we only look after the welfare of our children and husbands. Now, we still do that and we are more involved in the decisionmaking in our families and in our community), Alfonsa said while Rhodora affirms. Alfonsa concluded that the actual implementation and construction of the project did not really feel like work and that they also had fun “enjoy man, wala man nako nakita sa ilang mga nawong nga gipangkapoy sila” (it was enjoyable, I did not see it on their faces that were tired). Both women said that they are proud and happy about their contribution to the community especially that they know the school children will be safer during the rainy season.

Doring... from page 4

So if God rested after working for some period of time, there is no reason why man, who is finite and limited in his physical strength, should not take a vacation. Vacation is freedom or release from tension or pressure of work. And, believe me, I learned already from my students, that they will enjoy Christmas and vacation. Many of us feel tired and weak. We are stressed, overwhelmed, depressed and worried about the future - the enumeration, in any order whatever, could be incessant. Relaxation, meditation, and reinvigoration are badly needed for most of us nowadays. Life, affected by the “burnout syndrome” needs to be animated with energy and strengths. Yes, Christmas has always been equated with all these worldly ways. Sure, there is indeed nothing wrong with this. Let’s don’t only focus on nonstop merrymaking and countless gifts. Let’s take a break, and let’s try to imagine and enjoy the real meaning of Christmas. Merry

Gov. Bambi Emano considers Mediamen as partners for development and transparency. That is why he has always been admired and respected by the local media industry for being open to criticisms and for coming up with news-worthy programs and projects for his constituents and even beyond. As a good testament to this, the governor serves as invited guest during the KBP CDO-MISOR’s Christmas party and induction of 2016 officers , December 15, 2015. The father of the province assures them that his governance will always be an open book for everyone. Criticisms will be taken as constructive ones. Because Gov. Bambi Emano believes that no responsible media practitioner will resort to fabricated issues just to ruin his programs and services for the people of Misamis Oriental. photo courtesy of governor bambi emano’s facebook page

features Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield front face design. LED headlamps with daytime running lights also allow for a slim and memorable headlamp design. At the sides, the new high belt line design with the hard upper body crease, first seen in the Strada, continues over on the Montero Sport creating a robust and sturdy stance. Across the line, it sports 265/60R18 tires with the 4WD model gaining a two-tone design. The back is dominated by a controversial but unique tail light design that dips down the tailgate. It’s illuminated by LEDs to give it that unique glow at night. “Inside, it has a T-shaped high center console that’s more befitting a larger SUV. Filled with stylized silver finishes and black piano black inserts, it’s sporty and dynamic. It’s also quite luxurious with features such as dualzone climate control, a touchscreen AV system with rear monitor (and wireless headphones), leather seats, and a tilt/ telescopic multi-function steering wheel as available equipment. Unique to the Montero Sport is an electric parking brake (EPB) system

that helps slim down the transmission tunnel giving it more knee room, CarGuide.PH,” said. Improved top-tobottom, the all-new Montero Sport features better stability, ride, and quietness through the optimization of the suspension system as well as improvements to the body mounts. Additional and revamped sound insulation also help in reducing interior noise, it said. “Under the hood, the 2016 Montero Sport has a sole engine: the 2.4-liter MIVEC turbo diesel engine. It peaks out at 181 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and 430 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. The engine, called 4N15, features an all-aluminum design and is designated as a ‘clean diesel’ capable of at least Euro 4 emission levels. Paired with this engine is an all-new 8-speed automatic with a built-in sport mode, INC (Idle Neutral Control), and G-Sensor. All-in-all, Mitsubishi says the 2016 Montero Sport should achieve up to 17 percent better fuel efficiency over its predecessor. In terms of its four-wheel drive system, it comes with the Super-Select 4WD-II system now featuring a new off-road mode which gives better all-terrain performance and stability as the road surface requires. It also has hill descent control. Mitsubishi is taking the pole position with the Montero Sport. Aside from the RISE or Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body, it has a total of seven airbags for full occupant protection. In terms of active safety features, aside from the prerequisite ABS with EBD, the all-new Montero Sport features a lot of firsts for the Japanese brand including: Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), and Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS). And helping it slot into small parking spaces, it has a multi-around monitor that gives a 360-degree Bird’s Eye view around the car. Mitsubishi hopes that its all-new 2016 Montero Sport will broaden its market base around the world, especially since the outgoing Montero Sport cumulative unit sales reached 400,000 at the end of June. As this developed, TopGear Philippines annouced that the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) recently bestowed a five-star safety rating on the Pajero Sport

(Montero Sport in our market), along with two other SUVs. According to TopGear PH, the agency described the Montero Sports and the two other vehicles to have exhibited exemplary crash protection when subjected to various tests pitting them in frontal and front offset collisions. Montero Sport was described as one of the newest players among the vehicles tested, having been introduced to the world only last August. The midsize, seven-seat SUV was a significant step up in terms of occupant and pedestrian protection over the model it replaces. Apart from the rigid body and frame, the SUV likewise boasts class-leading tech like Forward Collision Mitigation and Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation, which help keep the driver out of harm’s way. The materials provided show the Mitsubishi Triton pickup -- called Strada in the market -- being crash-tested. Apparently, ANCAP considers these two vehicles to be exactly the same in terms of crash data. The ANCAP is an independent body that tests all makes and models of motor vehicles sold in and around the Australian and Asian regions. Its findings are highly regarded by industry players, and help assure the public that the cars they’re buying are truly safe.

prizes and other recognition; while the winner of the Search for Miss Earth Philippines, will have the distinction of representing the province in the national level of the said beauty contest. “The Kuyamis Festival is now a part of the country’s tourism calendar. It has reached a global audience and we expect next year’s event will bring in a good number of domestic and foreign visitors,” Gov. Emano added. The Kuyamis Festival is a yearly event initiated by Gov. Emano to support his comprehensive development plan of the province anchored on tourism.
