T
he Xavier Ateneo Sports Centre (XASC), the newest facility of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, has officially opened to provide the academic community a venue for athletics programs and recreational activities, located in Pueblo de Oro. During its blessing and ceremonial inauguration on Saturday, December 16, university president Fr Roberto “Bobby” C Yap SJ said that the XASC is dedicated to the Xavier Ateneo students. “This Sports Centre is for the students,” Yap told the crowd. “This is for their programs in sports and physical education so they will realize that physical exercise is essential for healthy living.” He also pointed out the importance for the
students to hone their athletic abilities to become gracious players and victors in sports. XACS features a basketball court with 2 sub-courts for practices, retractable bleachers (2,000+ seats), four badminton courts, semiOlympic-size swimming pool with shower area and locker rooms, track and field oval (8 lanes), regulation-size football field, and parking spaces for over 200 vehicles, among others. According to Yap, the facility stands as a
testament to accomplish the Jesuit educational principles of cura personalis and mens sana in corpore sano. For the person’s mind and body “Cura personalis, which means “care for the whole person,” is a key Ignatian value in Jesuit education,” Yap said. The students are taught with the principle as part of the university’s formation programs that extend to all educational
areas, including sports. In relation to their health and physical education, Yap emphasized the significance of adhering to mens sana in corpore sano which translates to “a sound mind in a sound body.” “Jesuit education includes a welldeveloped program of sports and physical education,” Yap stated, quoting The Characteristics of Jesuit Education’s 31st
paragraph. “In addition to strengthening the body, sports programs help [young] men and women to learn to accept success and failure graciously, and to become aware of the need to cooperate with others using the best qualities of each individual to contribute to the greater advantage of the whole group.” A venue for education The commemoration plaque, situated at its entrance, states that the
Centre is “dedicated to all students who enter the halls of Xavier Ateneo” who are aspiring to fulfill these Jesuit principles. Vivo gives back to Marawi soldiers with Special Outreach

ivo Philippines, in the true Filipino Christmas spirit, gave back to the heroic soldiers who fought to free Marawi by spending an afternoon with them last December 17 at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Hospital in V. Luna, Quezon City. The special outreach was attended to by Vivo employeevolunteers who interacted with 150 soldiers and their families and entertained them with song and dance per formances. VIVO’s celebrity influencers were also in attendance to give joy and encouragement to the Marawi freedom fighters. KZ Tandingan, Darren Espanto, Jason Dy, and Kisses Delavin also shared their talents in the afternoon of thanksgiving, to the delight of the wounded soldiers and their families.

Green groups slam DMCI for using ‘sneaky tactics’ to avoid regulation Advocates for consumers, accountability, and the environment expressed dismay over the ‘midnight exemption’ accorded to local coal mining companies from the new coal tax approved by both Houses of Congress. The coal tax hotly contested by local coal mining proponents, particularly DMCI and Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC)’s Isidro Consunji, was recently approved through a bicameral
session held last December 12. The mechanism will levy a P50 tax on both local and foreign coal to be used domestically as both a mechanism for revenue generation and for helping drive the country’s shift to renewable energy. “Like a thief in the night, DMCI and SMPC have successfully influenced Congress to delete the approved provision including local coal in the coal tax,” said Atty. Aaron Pedrosa,
Secretary-General of the multi-sectoral coalition Sanlakas. “This goes against the spirit of the proposed law, which would supposedly rein in the country’s continued reliance on coal for energy,” he added. Pedrosa pointed out that the exclusion of local coal from the tax will only encourage the expansion of coal mining in the country. “Exempting local coal producers will incentivize
indigenous coal production in the Philippines, contrary to our commitment to curb our emissions and to the detriment of the health, security, and livelihood of affected communities,” he emphasized. Mining in Semirara, Antique is the oldest operating mine in the Philippines, and has invited resistance from local residents due to the destruction of environment and livelihood from the mining operations and
expansion in the island. SMPC currently is the largest coal producer in the country. “It remains to be seen whether the President will intervene in this blatant armtwisting done by this coal company,” said Pedrosa. “We challenge him yet again to deliver on his supposed strong stance against oligarchs,” he stated further. RIMAVERA City in uptown Cagayan de Oro has just topped off construction of its first building. Mayor Oscar Moreno welcomed this development, saying it is part of a whole thrust to develop uptown CDO as a modern commercial and residential hub in what Primavera developer Italpinas Development Corporation chair Romolo Nati dubbed as a secondary city. Nati defined secondary city as a city that
has expanded its economy in the past decade or so thanks to private and public investments. What on earth am I here for? The more I look around, the more people I’m able to observe: stranded people, still having the optimistic smile on their faces. People, who are losing more and more of their bearings and are getting muddled in their lives. If political leaders confuse us more instead of leading us on the right way, we cry out for a satisfying answer through the institution church. Modesty will never get them what they actually deserve. Charity and brotherly or sisterly love, as the bible teaches us, are becoming foreign terms. Moral and human values are badly needed to drive and out energy and vigor in our daily life as we stroll into painful indifference and sharppeppered egoism.

Excellent education, as one of the primary thrusts of Xavier Ateneo since the university was established 84 years ago, extends beyond classes. For the tertiary level’s Central Student Government, the Sports Centre stands as “colossal option” for athletic events. “We are looking forward to holding some events in the university’s annual Intramural games here,” incumbent CSG
president Ian Caezar Abadies said. The Xavier Ateneo Intramurals is organized by CSG each year. “Swimming has often been held at the Pelaez Sports Center, but with the Xavier Ateneo Sports Centre now open and accessible, we are hoping to use it as our venue,” he said. Active cooperation The construction of the XACS, from planning to completion, which more than three years to the tune of over Php400M was made possible with the trust and active cooperation of various organizations and companies that have partnered with Xavier Ateneo. “It involved a significant number of consultations,” XU vice-president for basic education Dr Dulce Dawang recounted. Also engraved on the ceremonial plaque were Xavier Ateneo’s partner companies that aided the university to realize and fulfill this dream facility. MARAMAG, Bukidnon--A petite woman with nimble feet, that’s how some people see Lilibeth Puerto Galendez, 49, this empowered woman of the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) Kape Maramag, Inc. as she energetically guided a number of guests among coffee producers from other regions. It could be this trait that has endeared her among her peers in the only women’s organization that has set Kape Maramag above the rest among coffeeproducers in this region. Being the second highest official of Kape Maramag women’s organization, Ms. Galendez knew by heart the beginnings of their organization and how, since 2012, their members have been reaping not only sure income from the bountiful harvests but also some kind of assurance for their community to continue producing the now-known coffee branding Kape Maramag. One of Ms. Galendez’ painstaking contributions to the development of Kape Maramag is her untiring advocacy among coffee farmers, encouraging them to upgrade their approaches in coffee farming. In 2015, she related that the Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with Nestle Corporation, provided a budget for training of Coffee farmers in the Region. She was one of the lecturers/facilitators of the School on Air that was aired on a radio station. School on the Air “Bahandi”, an Agricultural Training Institute launched a capacity building on June 2015 involving 700 farmers in Maramag and Bukidnon areas that run up to three
months. For 30 minutes, from 6:00 up to 6:30 in the morning three times a week, the farmers listened to radio station DXMU-FM with dial 88.9 for their day’s lesson. The 18 modules covered in this one of a kind training helped encourage and inspire coffee markers to the point that many of them have succeeded to improve the yields of their coffee farms, and became showcases for other coffee farmers from other regions to see. Among the things taught on-air include technical knowhow on Rejuvenation and Pruning processes that later produce more bountiful harvests for the farmers and ease in the harvesting process. In this process, the coffee plant which usually grows three meters high would instead grow up to three to four feet in height. Showing some pictures of her own farm, Ms. Galendez enthusiastically shared that she also grew not only coffee but other plants and vegetables as well in between coffee “hills” or trees, which have sustained the family’s daily needs. She has been engaged in diversified farming including raising hogs and other farm animals such as ducks and chicken that not only answers the day to day nutrition needs of her family but which she also sells when these are in abundance. Ms. Galendez related that they were almost giving up, and then their coffee farms were given a perk. Considered a milestone for the

Department of Agriculture-High Value Crops Development Program (DAHVCDP), in 2012, it established a coffee roasting facility in the municipality through the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) Federation of Maramag, the mother organization of Kape Maramag that was part of its initiative in reviving the coffee industry in the region. The facility contained a coffee roasting system, commercial grade coffee grinder, foot sealer, cutter, weighing scale and foil for packaging, which was granted by the DA-HVCDP to the RICFM in collaboration with Kaanib Foundation. Initially, the Federation was composed of 1,050 members most of whom have been engaged into coffee farming and production of other agricultural crops from the 20 barangays in the municipality. Ms. Galendez and other officers of the federation also went through a Training of Trainers on Coffee Production initiated by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and even became one of the Philippine delegates to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Training Course on Intensive Cultivation Technique
of Coffee held in Thu Dau Mot City, Binh Duong, Vietnam sometime in 2013. Thus, with the brand name “Kape Maramag”, the Federation started their business operations on coffee roasting, grinding and brewing in April 2012 with only a hundred kilograms of coffee beans, said Ms. Galendez. By September 2013, the facility had already processed a total of 1,271.10 kilograms coffee beans. Hence, with only a starting capital of P11,500, Kape Maramag had grossed a total of P297,039.90 in the same year. It was said that the coffee blends they were producing sold at P350 per kilogram, while its 250, 100 and 50-gram packs have been sold at P125, P55, and P27, respectively up until at present.
