A Journey of 100 years in a day

ast Saturday, 10 December 2016, a small group of church members of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) has the enviable experience to journey 100 years of their church’s history in a day.

Half a day to be exact.

And our time machine was no less than the UCCP CDO Kia Van which comfortably transported us back to a hundred years ago to the birth of our local church.

The journey was made even more enjoyable and a rich experience for all since our company covered members from the past to the present: Rev. Joe Malayang, who was our senior minister when the church celebrated its Golden Anniversary in 1966; Annie Taglucop-Javelosa, daughter of Rev. Angel Taglucop who served as our head pastor from

1935-1938; Elving Noro, Lily Millian, and of course our ‘tour guides’ headed by Imma Rae “Em-em” Gatuslao with cousin Sheila Amor Dagapioso, and the youngest of our batch, Zaireen Jett. C. Malijao, all 12 years of her.

After a short briefing and prayer graced by by Centennial chair Rev. Prudencio Plaza, Jr. and head minister Rev. Ricardo Yañez, our small group proceeded to the city hall complex via Burgos and Capistrano streets.

It was used as a meeting place for pastors and other church events and as an outpatient clinic

The house was right next to the Vamenta property on which a structure dating back before the Second World War still stands.

According to Mrs. Annie, this building housed the first classrooms of the first Ateneo school for boys established by the late Archbishop Santiago Hayes during the 1930s.

Next stop was the corner of Tirso Neri and Gen. N. Capistrano Streets on which now stands the Gonzalo M. Chaves Building.

Probably the most

significant stop of the tour, here on 17 December 1916, the f ledgling Cagayan Mission then known as the Cagayan Evangelical Church (Congregational) held its first formal Sunday Worship Service on 17 December 1916 in a rented space in Cine Biyay, owned by Ñor Mentoy Chaves.

Next stop just a block away on the corner of Cruz Taal and Gen. N. Capistrano streets was the site of the Cagayan Mission Hospital where the second church chapel was housed.

Unfortunately, the edifice burned down in 1937 leading to the construction of the third chapel at the corner of Uldarico Akut and General Nicolas Capistrano streets just before World War II. From there we proceeded to Pilgrim Christian College (PCC) campus, another bulwark of the UCCP Cagayan de Oro City Church, which is encircled by Uldarico Akut, Gen. N. Capistrano, M.H. del Pilar and Tiano Brothers streets.

Originally known as the Pilgrim Institute, it opened in 06 June 1948 with some 250 students from first to fourth year high school. Classes were held at Carruth

Memorial Hall, a prewar girls dormitory.

From here PCC Gymnasium was just a few steps across Akut street and it was here that the third chapel of the church was built before the Second World War after the second chapel was burned down along with the Cagayan Mission Hospital in 1937.

Unfortunately, the Japanese military stripped the church of its valuable lumber during the war. The congregation rebuilt a better and more attractive structure which served as the first UCCP Cagayan de Oro church when the UCCP was created in 1948.

It served until 1977 when the present city church was constructed in the former Mission Compound at F. Abellanosa and Julio Pacana Streets in Licoan.

Thus, we ended our hundred year’s journey back in history where we started at the UCCP Cagayan de Oro City Church compound where its centennial will be celebrated on 17 December 2016, marking the first century of the first formal Sunday Worship service held at Cine Biyay.

3rd Northern Mindanao Journalism Excellence Awards eliminations held December 12-18, 2016

total of 69 junior high school students and ten government information officers joined the eliminations of the 3rd Northern Mindanao Journalism Excellence Awards held Saturday at PhinmaCOC Auditorium in Cagayan de Oro City.

The participants joined the following categories: feature writing, news writing, sports writing, photo journalism, business reporting and community journalism.

Prior to the half-day quiz, the participants listened to a two-hour crash course of the topics they participated in.

Hmm I can just smell christmas.

The lights dancing and the colors as you gaze mesmerizes you.

Not long ago, I passed a milestone marking 48 years since I began writing my first published article in a daily newspaper.

I started keeping all clippings since then. Believe me, it’s like a book. I guess, I am still too young to write my biography. As I re-read my first articles, I was amazed, I ever kept it up. But now you couldn’t pay me to stop.

Just shortly before this year’s Christmas, my 125th column will be published in the Businessweek Mindanao. My deepest gratitude to publisher, president and CEO Dante M. Sudaria and Editorin-Chief Nelson Constantino for

making it possible for me to find this platform in this outstanding paper.

Back to my clippings. Can you imagine that there are some benefits from keeping them? From life experiences, I see that progress and failure are both parts of my journey.

My columns are mostly a view into a mirror. I am reminded of God’s grace when I read (and wrote before) how He helped me to find solution to problems. I also gained insight from past struggles that help with issues I am currently facing. I remember one of my previous columns entitled “If failures get results”.

God has indeed been faithfully

working in my life.

I read a story

by Dennis Fisher, who didn’t keep publishing clippings but a spiritual journal. He advised: “Journalism may be useful to you too.

It can help you see more clearly what God is teaching you on life’s journey. To begin a journal, record your struggles, reflect on a verse that is especially comforting or challenging, or write a prayer of thankfulness for God’s faithfulness.”

The most awaited season of the years has finally come.

For many of us, December is still a glow that blossoms across the eastern horizon bringing the promise of a new beginning.

Globe signs MoA with Hineleban Foundation, Inc. on five-year Rainforestation Program in Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur

L

eading telecommunications company Globe Telecom, together with its thousands of iPhone 7 customers, collaborates with Hineleban Foundation, Inc. on the Rainforestation of Six Mountain Ranges of Mindanao as part of the company’s commitment to sustainable development and good corporate citizenship.

At the same time, Globe signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Hineleban for a five-year Rainforestation Program composed of three key components, namely: reforestation, food security, and sustainable livelihood development.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization which advocates environmental conservation and livelihood development by preserving and restoring mountain rainforests and watersheds, as well as providing livelihood opportunities for indigenous people in Bukidnon and Lanaodel Sur.

Customers who received the new iPhone 7 under the Globe MyLifestylePlan were able to participate in various cause-oriented programs including environment protection and conservation through the Globe of Good bundle which allowed the company to make a donation on their behalf to partner groups, one of which is Hineleban.

“We believe everyone should lead a sustainable lifestyle, one which protects and preserves our natural resources so future generations can enjoy our country’s rich heritage,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

“Globe has already established a name for its innovations in mobile and connectivity but it is equally important for the company to give back. We have to make our practices sustainable to keep providing topnotch products and services to the customers who trust us. At the same time, we’re inviting

them to be part of our efforts.”

Bukidnon, known as the “heart of Mindanao,” has some primary forests left but over 44,000 hectares of forest areas are already degraded. To date, Hineleban operates its rainforestation efforts in three project sites in Bukidnon and two project sites in Lanao del Sur to address the problem. Combined, it covers 1,054 hectares and supports 10 municipalities.

Hineleban works on the restoration of the environment and sustainable livelihood for the Lumads and the Bangsamoro through Transformational Business Partnerships. It has also signed a “Sacred Customary Compact” with the Seven Tribes of Bukidnon, duly recognizing the role of the latter as custodians of the forest.

This is the second consecutive quarter that consumer confidence registered a positive reading, indicating that the number of households with optimistic views increased and outnumbered those with pessimistic views. The Cl is computed as the percentage of households that answered in the affirmative less the percentage of households that answered in the negative with respect to their views on a given indicator.

According to respondents, the following reasons were behind their rising optimism: (a) improvements in the peace and order

situation, (b) effective government policies (e.g., end to job contractualization or “endo” and nowindow-hour policy in the number coding scheme), (c) anticipated increase in salaries, and (d) availability of more jobs. Respondents also cited assistance from government such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), new administration/ president, less corruption, antidrug campaign and improvement in services of government agencies (e.g., NBI clearance and birth certificate) which helped boost consumer confidence for the current quarter.

For the next quarter (Q1 2017) and the year ahead, consumer confidence was less optimistic as the CIs declined but remained positive at 18.8 percent (from 27.3 percent a quarter ago) and 33.4 percent (from 43.8 percent in the previous

quarter’s survey results), respectively.

This indicates that the number of households with positive outlook decreased but continued to exceed those with negative views.

Respondents’ less upbeat outlook for the next quarter and the year ahead stemmed from households’ concerns about (a) higher prices of goods, (b) lower income, (c) unstable stock market, (d) fewer investors in the country, and (e) issues on extrajudicial killings.

Consumer confidence on the three component indicators further improved for Q4 2016, with the strongest confidence registered on the country’s economy, followed by family income and family financial situation. For the next quarter (Q1 2017) and the year ahead, consumers’ views on all three indicators turned less optimistic, with the Cl on the economic condition of the country recording the biggest

State pension fund Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is set to release the yearly Christmas cash gift to a total of 281,000 old-age and disability pensioners starting December 16.

According to GSIS Officer-in-Charge and Senior Vice President for NCR Operations Atty Nora MalubaySaludares, a total of Php 2.67 billion has been earmarked for this benefit.

Pensioners whose 2015 Christmas cash gift is above Php10,000 will be granted an amount equivalent to one-month current pension up to a maximum of Php12,600.

While, pensioners whose 2015 Christmas cash gift is Php10,000 and below will be granted an amount equivalent to one-month current pension up to a maximum of Php10,000.

Those who resumed their regular monthly pension after December 31, 2015 (after the five-year guaranteed

period) will be granted an amount equivalent to one month current pension up to a maximum of Php10,000.

Pensioners living abroad and those in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao who are on suspended status as of 31 December 2016 are also eligible to receive this benefit provided they activate their status not later than 30 April 2017.

They will receive their cash gift not later than 31 May 2017.

Survivorship and dependent pensioners, and retirees who received in advance their guaranteed pensions in the form of lump sum and who are still within the guaranteed pension and are resuming their regular monthly pension after 31 December 2016 are not entitled to receive the cash gift.

Also ineligible to receive the cash gift are pensioners under Republic Act 7699 gift/PAGE 7

FRATERNAL Order of Eagles (Philippine Eagles) NMR 4 Governor Nelson Alonto-Sarapuddin inducted the new officers of CDO Blue Eagles Club last Saturday at Buffalo Resto Grill in Cagayan de Oro City.

Sarapuddin also inducted 42 new members of the club, which celebrated its first anniversary that day, bringing to a total of 200 members in one of the fastest growing Eagles clubs in this part of the country under the leadership of chartered president Andrew Tupag Jr. In his speech, Sarapuddin exhorted the

new members to always be active in all the club activities throughout the year by following the examples of the 15 pioneering members led

by Tupag.

Under Tupag’s leadership, the CDO Blue Eagles Club has reaped many benefit events – Captain America: Civil War block screening, a dinner-concert at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, a red-themed masquerade party earlier this month at Lifestyle District and an upcoming fun run next Sunday. Proceeds of all these events will go to the various year-round outreaches of the club.
