ne of the world’s top premier manufacturers of quality audio equipment has opened its first Mindanao store in Cagayan de Oro City. Louie A. Ramos, owner of Premier AV Automation Davao, Inc. cut the ribbon at the store's grand launch Friday, December 8 with SM CDO Downtown Premier Leasing Manager Corrine Bollozos near the Cyberzone at the mall's 3rd Level. "Actually we will also be opening another branch in SM Lanang in Davao City hopefully by December," Ramos said. "We're just waiting for the store to be finished, this just happened to be ready earlier." The JBL Store at the 3rd Level of SM CDO
Downtown Premier near the Cyberzone has been operating since September, this year. JBL is an American audio electronics company founded in 1946 by James B. Lansing, after whom the company was named. Their primary products are loudspeakers and associated electronics. There are two independent divisions within the company — JBL Consumer and JBL Professional. The former produces audio equipment for the consumer home market while the latter

N indie filmmaker from Cagayan de Oro garnered the Golden Feather in the recently held Festival de Cine Paz Mindanao which was held from November 30 to December 3. Joe Bacus’ The End of War snatched jurists’ hearts due to the intensity of the story about the armed conflict between the Philippine military and Moro rebel forces that was set a decade ago. Starring Rustie Quintana and Haidie Sangkad, the 17-minute-
long The End of War is a story of a family in Maguindanao caught in the crossfire of a war they never wanted to be a part of. Festival de Cine Paz Mindanao showcased the different stories and faces of peace. It aimed to support and strengthen the vision of sustaining the journey for peace, exploring its different dimensions, expressions and forms through the cinematic medium. The festival was incorporated in the 20th annual observance of the

allows people to converse and share their ideas and thoughts about peace in Mindanao after
years of peace dialogues and peace efforts. It is a thematic festival. The film entries were
about peace. However, the filmmakers had the liberty to interpret peace in their own visual terms.
80TH ANNIVERSARY
Kong Hua School holds Family Day
IT was a jolly mood last Friday as Kong Hua School celebrated its 80th founding anniversary for a week – from November 24 to December 1. In particular was the Family Day celebration last Friday which was chaired by Aileen Parojinog of the Parents Auxiliary Council. There were parlor games (modern dance competition, mother and daughter/father and son lookalike contest)
and dinner. In his message, Kong Hua School director Fr. Emmanuel Regalado reported to the parents that 16 students from the school have captured international honors so far, both in the academic and extracurricular fields to the cheers of the parents who were present in the activity held at the school’s gymnasium. Kong Hua School was the result of a merger in 1937 of two informal
institutions teaching in the Chinese curriculum – Chung Hua and Hua Chao. Realizing the need for English instruction, a permit was secured from the Bureau of Private Schools in 1950. Recognition for the complete elementary course was issued in 1955. High school was opened the same year. In 1979, the Parents Auxiliary Council was born, then known as the Kong Hua School anniversary/PAGE 11

THROUGH the years, local pool of pop music talents Dreamboard Artists under the tutelage of founder Donie Galigao has molded two generations of talented individuals already. One of the talents that Dreamboard intends to headline right now is the girlie acoustic group Muzikattak. In fact, the group recently launched their Christmas single Pasko sa Paghigugma
just last December 1 at Pamahaw Espesyal. On top of that, Pasko sa Paghigugma will now be available on Spotify starting December 15. So who really are Muzikattak? According to lead vocalist Christine dela Peña, the group was initially formed around her, lead guitarist Ricky Rodriguez and drummer/ beatbox handler Ralph Kenneth Sevilla in early 2016.
It took Christine several months for Sir Donie, as he is fondly called, to haul in her churchmate and equally talented composer JK Roxas to be on board as their rhythm guitarist finally. For the whole of 2017, Muzikattak had a smooth-sailing career. They captured weekend gigs at Kingston Lodge Hotel. They guested every now and then at Pamahaw
Espesyal with fellow Dreamboard Artists. They performed every Sunday at Limketkai Event Center. But above all, they were able to write their own music. Muzikattak prides itself to have three original tracks in its fold – Lisod Na, Ikaw Ra and Pagbati. With 2018 on the horizon, we’ll definitely look forward to an EP next year. Because we love homegrown music.
Last November 9, 2017, Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC), a green developer of Cagayan de Oro, has officially teamed up with Asian United Bank (AUB), for the company’s projects, Primavera City and Primavera Residences. To welcome this new partnership, IDC recently hosted a Mixers Night event together with AUB last November 10. I know their standards. I guess this will be a good partnership because we know that IDC’s product is saleable”. Likewise, Marylu Velez Tan, Assistant Manager and Sales Officer of AUB, also recommended that one of the selling points of Primavera projects is its location at the heart of Uptown. Italpinas Development Corporation is a young Italian-Filipino company that started in Cagayan de Oro. Both of their green projects, Primavera Residences and Primavera City are located in the booming district of Uptown CDO.

Liberalization of telecoms to bring higher charges
Bayan Muna: Telecoms industry should be nationalized to safeguard consumers The Duterte administration’s call for “immediate steps to ease foreign investment limits” in the country “will only open up the Philippine economy to further foreign strangle and unjust control, particularly the basic and strategic industries, like telecommunications, infrastructure, health and media." “Pres. Duterte’s statement is now a signal for Congress to rush up the passage of Resolution of Both Houses No. 8 or Charter Change, now unmasked as nothing but mainly to allow foreign ownership of business’ in the country. On the other hand, recently the House also passed on third reading House Bills 6557 and 6558, all designed to liberalize the telecommunications sector,” said Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate (Party List, Bayan Muna). "Also passed in early September by a 135-8 vote, House Bill No. 5828 that would amend Commonwealth Act No. 146 (the Public Service Act) which limits the definition of “public utility” to three (3) types of business : water distribution, sewerage and power transmission," he said. “We voted NO to these bills, because we believe that further liberalization of the telecommunications sector among other strategic services will not result to better services for our people even if China, Malacanang’s preferred investor, or, other countries enter the sector,” added Zarate. “Moreover, Bayan Muna also believes that government’s role in a utility imbued with public interests like telecommunications should not only be limited to oversight, but instead of a more active participation and control,” he added. Internet service in the Philippines is one of the worst in the world -seventh slowest, besting only the likes of Iraq, Afghanistan and Ethiopia. It is also one of the most expensive in the world based on man-hours per unit of data. However, Bayan Muna believes history has proven that opening it up to new players will not play into the favor of our consumers. “Liberalization and privatization failed to deliver the promised efficient, affordable and good services for our people. Our power industry, for instance, was liberalized and opened up to a "free market" competition, but it has, in fact, only resulted to sky-high electricity rates, 5th highest in the world. It also did not necessarily result to better services or succeeded in bringing power to a wider part of our country sides,” Rep. Zarate said. In other sectors, like MRT, oil, mining and agriculture, privatization and liberalization of these key industries worked against the favor of the Filipino people. Bayan Muna filed House Bill 3876 or An Act Expanding The Powers Of The National Telecommunications Commission Classifying Short Messaging Service, And Internet Services As Utilities
Imbued With Public Interest And Providing Penalties Thereof, last year, and, the same was later included in the substituted HB 6557 and HB 6558. Rep. Zarate, however, withdrew as co-author of the said substituted bills because “they no longer reflect the objectives for which Bayan Muna filed HB 3876, that is, to ensure the interests of the Filipino people in the arena of telecommunications.” “We filed HB 3876 because we intend to echo the call of consumers that government should lead the creation of a national telecommunications and internet infrastructure in order to interconnect the different islands of the country. This is a monumental task and shall need government resources as it would cover areas unprofitable for the telecommunication companies to build its facilities. It challenges our government to nationalize the telecom industry to transform the profit-driven industry into a public utility in its truest sense,” Rep. Zarate added. Moreover, Bayan Muna’s proposed measure seeks to rationalize and strengthen government regulation of the industry by clearly defining the powers of the National Telecommunications Commission through the formulation of provisions specific and categorical to the industry. It also increased the fines to be imposed, which is also indexed with inflation to ensure maximum compliance on the side of telecommunication companies and internet service providers. However, while HB 6558 adopted the proposed increased fines, it removed provisions for government to develop a national telecommunications and internet infrastructure that will provide, among others, a nationwide interconnection platform among different government offices and local government units. The role of government as a mere regulator of the industry will not suffice to ensure public interest in telecommunications. As long as it is being run to generate profits, if not super profit, the industry will never respond to the needs and interest of the people. The state’s direct participation and control of the industry as an internet and telecom provider would reverse this profit-driven thrust. “We believed that the proposed substitute bills do not reflect the original objective of Bayan Muna’s HB 3876, which was built under the framework of nationalization rather than liberalization and further privatization” he said. "Our people need faster, more reliable, and more inclusive communications facilities. This will never happen while we are at the mercy and whims of big, private telecommunication networks or telco oligarchs. The state has to advance its economic agenda by taking hold of telecommunications and other basic services," Zarate said.

Christmas evokes memories... Yes, Christmas evokes memories and sentiments that travel with us like treasured gifts of our hearts. It is the time for ref lection of the past year and of things we’ve done to make a difference in the lives of others. Hopefully, we did. Several years ago already, Elvie Punzalan-Estavillo, fellow Philippine Star columnist voiced it out very well. It’s indeed a time for thanksgiving for the blessings received, and for the trials and pains that helped shape, strengthen, and mold us to become better persons. “Hay nako” - the typical Philippine expression, I adopted many times since living in the Philippines for good. What on earth am I here for? The more I look around, the more people I’m able to observe: stranded people, still having the optimistic smile on their faces. People, who are losing more and more of their bearings and are getting muddled in their lives. If political leaders confuse us more instead of leading us on the right way, we cry out for a satisfying answer through the institution church. Modesty will never get them what they actually deserve. Charity and brotherly or sisterly love, as the bible teaches us, are becoming foreign terms. Moral and human values are badly needed to drive and out energy and vigor in our daily life as we stroll into painful indifference and sharppeppered egoism.
Our daily ill Have My Say feelings regarding all parts of our life can’t be or can’t remain as a permanent state of affairs. Incompetent and incapable leaders, who are still being able to continue in their Klaus Doring own monstrous, unhindered and impertinent style are every country’s poison and reason for decline. During the last weeks, as in every year, I received innumerable religious and philosophical literature and invitation from several institutions. I must confess, that I have been confused many times. I am sorry and I really wish to apologize, if I reject most “of this stuff ”, and, if I decide NOT to answer such emails or text messages. Sure, it’s is Christmas time, but... . May the love and humility the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ signified remain etched in our hearts. he former Father Provincial of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines is the new President of the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific (JCAP). After nine and a half years, Fr Mark Raper SJ stepped down as President of the JCAP on November 22, and handed over the leadership to Fr Antonio F. Moreno SJ in a simple Mass and dinner in Manila. Among the many who came to say farewell to Fr Raper and welcome Fr Moreno were JCAP Consultors and Secretaries who were in Manila for the JCAP Extended Consult. The presence of former Superior General Adolfo Nicolás SJ, who was Fr Raper’s predecessor as JCAP President, made the occasion more memorable, having three JCAP Presidents in the same room at the same time. Fr Raper celebrated his final Mass as President in the Chapel of Arrupe International Residence with Fr Moreno as concelebrant. In his homily, Fr Raper reflected
on mission and love in relation to the Gospel of the day on the Parable of the Ten Pounds (Luke 19: 11 to 28). “For Tony who takes on a new mission today, or for me ending one, or for any of you in your mission, the principal gift God gives us is to love us. Our Examen, first and foremost, is about how we respond to and take care of the love entrusted in us,” said Fr. Raper. He reminded all gathered that loving is not about duty, but about engaging with God in a shared undertaking that is based on love, initiative and imagination. He recalled how St Ignatius led a group of men who were learned yet poor, but filled with passion and desire. “We Jesuits and companions of Jesus flourish in proportion to our willingness to be creative, to dare, to be brave in our discernment, in our apostolates, and in our care for one another, in our love for God’s people, most especially his preferred ones, the poor.” Fr Moreno expressed his gratitude to Fr Raper

for nearly a decade of “fruitful, inspiring and engaging leadership”, recognizing how his predecessor at one point had three jobs. “It has been difficult for him to be President of this Conference and at the same time Superior of the missions in East Timor and Myanmar,” he said. “I don’t think the East Timor and Myanmar missions would be what they are now if not for the leadership of Mark.” The new JCAP President acknowledged that he is treading on new terrain but said that he takes comfort in the assurance that this is all about mission. “I never imagined myself to be here standing before you,” Fr Moreno said at the end of the Mass. “I look at my own journey since I was a child. I was quite happy to be in my nook and corner. Even in class, I hardly ever recited,” he shared. “This is really about mission and thank you for your support. I ask for prayers for me and Mark as we undertake the mission that our Lord wants us to accomplish.”
Society of Jesus Father General Arturo Sosa appointed Fr Moreno, who was formerly Provincial of the Philippine Jesuit Province, to succeed Fr Mark Raper as the next JCAP President last April 22, 2017. Becoming the President of JCAP, Fr. Moreno will also be superior of the Arrupe International Residence. Fr Moreno became the Philippines 11th Fr. Provincial in 2013 after six years as President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. He holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University College of Wales and a Master in Philosophy of Development Studies from the University of Sussex. He went to Ateneo de Manila University for his AB Pre-Divinity and his MA in Theology. His doctorate in Development Studies focused on the socio-political engagement of the Church with post-authoritarian Philippine society. After his ordination in 1993, Fr Moreno did a brief stint teaching at St John Vianney

he pioneer maker of the “King of the Road Jeepney” is once again leading the pack in the most important step in the Philippine automotive industry, the mass production of full electric Francisco Passenger Jeepney (FPJ) powered by QEV Tech. Elmer Francisco, a scion of the Francisco Clan behind the 70 year old Francisco Motor Corporation, sealed the deal with QEV Tech represented by no less than their CEO Miguel Valldecabres in Cagayan de Oro City. The QEV Group brings together a wide experience in the management and development of projects on a global scale in the field of technological innovation in electro-mobility. The Group’s philosophy is based on the need to reduce carbon emissions caused by transport in urban areas, creating clean, healthy cities and countries with the help of an electro-mobile vehicle fleet. The company’s Madrid operation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to research urban planning solutions which utilize electro-mobility and artificial intelligence. Its Barcelona operation is an engineering company specializing in the field of electro-mobility, ranging from the development, construction and type approval of electric vehicles (BACI, TESLA GT) to the installation, management
and maintenance of electrical charging points (ABB). In addition, it manages Formula-E motor-racing teams such as Mahindra Racing. Its London operation is the co-founder of the first championship for electric vehicles, Formula E (exclusive contract with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). In Singapore, the company is responsible for the introduction of standard, universal fastcharging points (15 minutes, 180 km) for any type of electric vehicle in cities over all 5 continents, in partnership with ABB and Microsoft. QEV Philippines is a partnership between QEV Group and Aboitiz Group spearheaded by businessman Endika Aboitiz. The company has already inked the agreements that will allow them to set-up fast charging stations that could actually charge the Lithium-ion batteries of the electric Francisco Passenger Jeepneys from 0 to 80% in just 15 minutes at SM Malls, Ayala Malls and Shell Stations nationwide. Jeepney operators could actually save a lot of money and in turn earn more profits due to the cost difference of fossil fuel and electric charging. Their cost of operations will simply become lower. Francisco also enjoined Mr. Samson Carcueva, Jr. who also came from another jeepney making family. He was also a public servant who served the government for 20 years and was most recently the Officer-inCharge of the Bureau of Internal Revenue Regional District Office in Cagayan de Oro City before retirement. He joined the company to share his experience both in jeepney making and in finance. According to Francisco, “Caring for our environment is not only the responsibility of our government but the responsibility of all humanity. I can’t do it alone. We all need to work together in order to make a drastic change. I can imagine a future wherein all public and private transportations no longer emit toxic materials that are detrimental to our environment and our health as well. Let us all do our part to save our environment while we still have time.” In response to the government’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program and an answer to President Duterte’s call to develop and create jobs in the provinces, the partnership will also develop a 43-hectare property in Northern Mindanao and have it accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as a Manufacturing Economic Zone.

The ecozone will house a mega manufacturing plant that could produce over 20,000 units of Francisco Passenger Jeepneys per year on a single shift operation that could be doubled as needed. Mass producing the new Francisco Passenger Jeepney would further lower the price of the jeepney without sacrificing the quality, durability and dependability for business just as what the Francisco name is known for in the jeepney industry through decades. This facility will be accredited by PEZA as a Domestic Manufacturing Enterprise that would cater to the domestic market. Over 5,000 direct jobs would be made available to the qualified residents of Northern Mindanao through this facility alone. The partnership also aims to export jeepneys and other electric vehicles to the neighboring ASEAN countries and African countries as well within the next few years. Francisco had the experience of exporting jeepneys to Africa in the early 2000’s. Complimentary industries will also be hosted to complete the supply chain such as

These businesses would generate even more indirect jobs for the
people of Northern Mindanao. Francisco will be unveiling and would be launching within a few weeks the full electric Francisco Passenger Jeepney that conformes with the specifications given by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Bureau of National Standards (BNS) for the public to witness.
