Primavera holds Christmas art exhibit with renowned CDO artists

C

hristmas is a season for merriment, feasts and giving. This December 9 to 27, 2014, Primavera offers the gift of art with an exhibit entitled "Season's Paintings at Primavera."

Viewers will be treated to a feast for the eyes that also warms the heart and nourishes the soul.

The collection of small to m e d iu m s i z e d work s range from representational to nonrepresentational and rendered in styles from abstract cubism and expressionism to surrealism and realism. The artists use a variety of materials from the traditional, such as oil and acrylic, to wood and

mixed media.

Chasing Dreams: A Triathlete’s Story Story by Noel Villa

On a regular day, 22-year old Mark Balanay goes to work as a sales assistant at a local sports shop. Although a man of few words, he greets customers with a smile and gives them advise on which bike is best for their need, lifestyle and budget. Little do they know that this young man was in fact the winner in the recently concluded Manta Tri held last November 16, 2014 in Medina, Misamis Oriental.

The youngest of three siblings, this determined triathlete works hard and sets his goal to compete in the 5150 Triathlon Series, the “largest international distance triathlon series in the world and will be the f irst non-drafting international race series of its kind, offering a competitive platform for professional and age group athletes”. In the Philippines, this event will be held in Subic Bay and Bohol in June and November 2015.

As an athlete myself, I celebrate milestones of other athletes for I know

that there is usually a wonderful story behind each individual’s journey. I chatted with Mark recently to get a glimpse of his story and hopefully to inspire other promising athletes to never cease chasing their dreams.

How long have you been doing triathlons?

“I started 2 years ago.

On my 1st Race I placed 3rd in the National Age Group TriAthlon 2012 in Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City.”

Where do you train?

“I usually swim and run at Pelaez Sports Complex. I also run at Pueblo de Oro area located uptown. For cycling, I train on the road from CDO going to Jasaan, Misamis Oriental" How d o you prep are yourself before a big race?

"Usually I just rest and relax while listening to music.”

At the Manta Tri, you lead pretty much throughout. Noel Salvador (Member of International Triathlon Union based in Manila) who is considered as a veteran in the Tri

Circuit closely followed you. How did you manage to keep your lead?

"At first he was the one I kept a close eye on during the swimming stage. Being a veteran in the sport, I knew he was always going to be close by. But during the cycling stage, I was able to create a significant gap and eventually pulled away from him".

Leading up to the last 800 meters of the run, what was going through your mind and how confident were you finishing strong?

"Although I was able to kick away, I continued to stay focused and controlled my running to avoid getting muscle aches or cramps" There are lots of Tri Circuits in the Philippines.

Which would be your Dream Circuit, one that you would like to win one day?

"I would say the 5150 Triathlon in Subic. It has a standard Olympic distance race. It's an internationally renowned race with participants coming from triathlete/PAGE 11

SCG-Mariwasa launches alternative biomass project to benefit typhoon victims

Though it has almost been a year since typhoon Yolanda hit the country, many are still struggling to rebuild, including the municipality of Lawaan in Eastern Samar.

To help those affected by the typhoon, SCG and its subsidiary, Mariwasa, has partnered with the Office of the Presidential Assistant f or R e h a bi l it at i on an d Recovery (OPARR) and the Lawaan local government to create a program that can benefit this municipality.

This project, which will be the very first of its kind as part of the countr y’s rehabilitation efforts post typhoon Yolanda, aims to gather all the uprooted coconut trees caused by the typhoon and use them as an alternative source of energy.

Many lives were lost and our entire infrastructure was damaged. Candida Eligio Garbornes, Mayor of the Municipality of Lawaan in Eastern Samar.

The uprooted coconut trees are a concer n for Lawaan because as these trees decompose, they will attract insects in the area, which will destroy the crops and farming lands of the locals. With an estimated 356, 580 damaged coconut trees in the region, locals

have resorted to burning t he fel l e d t re e s , w h i ch is detrimental to the environment. The project will enjoin the communities in L awaan to clear vast areas of felled trees. With the help of SCG-Mariwasa in providing the necessary tools and vehicles for clearing and transportation, the coconut trees will be delivered to Mariwasa to be transformed into a usable resource which will power Mariwasa’s plants while helping sustain Lawaan’s environment.

“The partnership will be a big help for Lawaan since there are so many aspects that we need to focus on and rehabilitate.

This project will help clear the debris and maintain the natural balance of the environment in the area,” mariwasa/PAGE 11

two become one T hin k a minute…An African man who had three wives asked his Irish friend who had only one wife, this question: “Do you like your wife?” His Irish friend replied: “I like her very much!” The African man shook his head and said very sadly: “I don’t like any of mine.” A famous comedian gives this advice to young couples before they get married: “Of course, it’s important to love each other; but if you want to be really happy together, you better LIKE each other.”

Ray Rosa grew up in Italy and came to America as a young man in 1921. There he met and married his wife, Isabel. They settled in a small town where Ray worked as a barber most of his life.

Just a few years ago, Isabel became very sick and had to move to a nursing home in a nearby town to live. Ray’s life and daily routine completely changed. Every morning, 7 days a week, he takes a bus

to the nursing home where Isabel waits for him in her wheelchair.

They sp end the day together and Ray takes care of her. Sometimes he brings his guitar and sings Italian songs for the other sick patients, and gives free haircuts to some of the men there. Then at 5:30 every evening, Ray says goodbye to his wife and catches the bus home. It’s very clear that Ray’s life has become one with his wife’s, so that his life is wherever she is.

That’s real love and happiness. It doesn’t get any better than that. You just can’t fill your heart with real happiness until you give it away to someone else. Jesus Christ teaches that our life is much more blessed and happy when we give more than we receive. Marriage is all about giving and forgiving.

If you run away (and/ or c l o s e you r e ar s , eyes and mouth) - it breaks you!

Ever yday - a dull reality! Many of

us w i l l ans we r t h is question with a big Y E S ! Ac t u a l l y w h o do we like to cover a newborn day already with grey veil? Each day has a new face, but sometimes we don’t have the strength to watch its countenance.

Of course, not every d ay has a dve ntu re s and highlights.

Contrar y to what m i g ht b e e x p e c te d, I look back on experiences that, at the same time, seemed especially desolating an d p ai n f u l w it h a particular satisfaction.

In d e e d , e v e r y t h i n g I have learned, ever ything that has tr uly enhanced and enlightened my existence, has b e en through affliction and not through happiness.

If it ever were to be possible to eliminate affliction from your earthly existence, the result would not be

make life delectable, but t o m a k e it t o o banal and trivial to be endurable.

By observation, we can feel that many of us need help to manage the everyday life. We need something that would keep us going as we journey through life. Many times we can also learn from other people and their experiences.

Panasonic ‘eco learning’ held to advance environmental education A

month after the company mobilized its employees to plant trees in Tanay, Rizal, Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation (PMPC) resumed conducting its series of Eco Learning (environmental education) Program or ELP on Friday, November 28 with one of its elementary school partners.

Led by PMPC president Nobuo Yasuhira, the company’s management and staff provided environmental lessons and inspirations to the students and teachers of Don Jose Elementary School in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“Since the establishment of Panasonic in 1918, we have been carrying out all our activities along with our management philosophy with

the basic concept of ‘company as a public entity of society’.

Thus, our commitment to help create a sustainable society through environmental activities such as our ‘eco learning’ program is also an expression of the purpose of our company’s existence. What advice can you give to those who are thinking of participating in triathlons?

"Running and cycling are easy but swimming is very technical. You need to really train hard and perfect your swimming skills and techniques needed for the race.”

Filipinos love sports, there is no doubt in that.

Despite the very limited training facilities and funding for sports in this country, these setbacks never hindered the spirits

of our talented athletes.

I just hope that through this article, the people in authority will finally realize that investing in other sports apart from the usual basketball, volleyball or boxing will also bring pride to the City just as what Mark did.
