Private Sector takes up slack in PH Vaxx Drive

S THE national government staggers to press its vaccination program to protect the maximum number of Filipinos before the year ends, the private sector has lent a helping hand by purchasing its own vaccines for its employees and other stakeholders.

Universal Robina Corp (URC) has begun vaccinating its workforce, as it pursues its role in keeping the Philippines’ food supply chain robust

amid a still lingering Covid-19 pandemic.

URC, one of the Philippines’ largest food and beverage firms, is aiming to have 70% of its

MOFCCCII Meantime, the Misamis Oriental Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MOFCCCII) distributed food packs to porters at the Laguindingan Airport and Cagayan de Oro Baseport at Macabalan in partnership with the St Padre Pio Prayer Partners on August 11 and 12, 2021.

Each of the

beneficiaries received a sack of rice, and a bag containing assorted canned goods, noodles, and sachets of milk powder for their families.

The activity aimed to provide aid to a total of 115 beneficiaries including airport porters.

Port Manager Isidro V. Butaslac Jr. together with the representatives of the partner civic organizations led by MOFCCCII President Tony Uy led the distribution of the relief packs at CDO Port.

Earlier last July 16, 2021, the MOFCCCII conducted another Covid-19 Food Assistance project in partnership with the St Padre Pio Prayer Partners and Macasandig Kagawad Nixon Baban to distribute 200 food packages to Persons with Disabilities at the St Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral. The activity was preceded by a holy mass, officiated by Rev Fr Jun Balsamo, in celebration of the feast of our Lady of Mt Carmel.

A German Expat in the Philippines

Chapter XXVII: German-Philippine Relations - but some culture differences too Yes, life in our Filipino family kept Rossana and me free for many things.

I was able to devote myself more and more to my journalistic activities.

Meanwhile I wrote for six different publications - among them especially for the “Boracay Sun” - a glossy color magazine, that disappeared unfortunately from the media market.

Rossana and I got to know Sara Duterte very quickly. Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio, better

known as Inday Sara, is a Filipina lawyer, politician and the incumbent Mayor of Davao City.

She also served as the city mayor from June 30, 2010, until June 30, 2013.

I did my first interview with her in 2010.

Sara Duterte was born in Davao City on May 31, 1978, the second child to lawyer Rodrigo Duterte and flight attendant Elizabeth Zimmermann. We spoke a lot of GermanPhilippine Relations but

also cultural differences.

Another guest followed my invitation: Jesus “Jess” Dureza. Jesus “Jess” Gestuveo Dureza (born December 24, 1947) is a Filipino lawyer, consultant, journalist and politician from Davao City. He was the adviser on the peace process to President Rodrigo Duterte from 2016 to 2018 and is the Founding Chairman of Advocacy MindaNow Foundation, a group advocating for peace in Mindanao.

He has held various appointive positions in past administrations including the chairmanship of the Mindanao Development Authority, the chairmanship of the Government Peace Negotiating Panel for Talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and Presidential Assistant for Mindanao.

What attracted me to him was the merging of a politician, lawyer and media man. Dureza had

a career in journalism before entering politics.

In 1972, while a law student at Ateneo de Davao, he worked as a radio host for RMN Davao and as Davao correspondent for The Manila Times.

After finishing law, he was hired as an editor for Mindanao Times, as a correspondent for Manila Bulletin, and as television presenter of “Brainstorm” in Davao City. He was also President of the Davao Press Club, where we met for the first time.

Rossana, my mother and I really enjoyed our life in the Philippines. We travelled a lot and found time to relax and unwind.

We tried to visit every possible cultural music event that we could. Of course, we were used to other things from Berlin.

tenor artist who performed before the Dabawenyos Friday Night at the Grand Regal Hotel in Davao.

Abdul has popularized his craft for many, many in Europe where classical music is always associated with culture.

“In Manila such a specific audience for classical music is there but this has still to be established in the provinces even as there is an improvement on the appreciation of such music outside of the capital,” he told me then.

Yes, since I stopped my classical music radio shows, Ludwig van Beethoven and all classical masters disappeared. Sayang.

EFORE the era of multi-million dollar purses, coupled with equally astronomical PPV deals, another world champion boxer from Mindanao started his pugilistic arts not very far from the inauspicious origins of the current boxing idol.

This unassuming, though quite strapping and muscular, guy started honing his boxing skills in the town of Marbel, north of General Santos, but still within the Cotabato region.

This boxer who carried the name of Ireneo Barrientos, but shortened to Rene Barrientos as an appropriate boxing handle, lists his birthplace as Balite, Aklan, in the Visayas Region.

It can be surmised that not unlike many of the Christian residents of the Cotabato region which has been traditionally and predominantly Muslim, Rene’s family resettled in the area.

Which place had been renowned for holding alluring promises for those who dared.

The tempting enticements of a very

hospitable climate, fertile agricultural lands and enviable homesteads, which had earned the huge Cotabato basin the distinction of being the rice granary of the entire country.

In October 10, 1962, Rene made his first professional fight in

city of Cagayan de Oro to be managed by one of its more popular boxing enthusiasts, Dodong Almirante.

This partnership would lead Rene to a world championship and beyond.

Standing at about 5’7” and fighting at a comfortable 130 lbs.,

Rene took hold of his highest crowning glory by grabbing the vacant WBC Super Featherweight World Championship in a bruising 15-rounder that ended in a unanimous decision.

Of his 48 professional fights, this would be the only one held in Cotabato, because after this he was ready to move on to bigger places and greater heights.

Pacquing is new RP Junior Featherweight Champ

answer the bell for the 11th round. Pacquing was way ahead in the scorecards of the three judges when the fight ended.

Both fighters exchanged in a furious exchange at close rang starting in the 2nd round. However, Naduma could not land any of his haymakers as Pacquing repeatedly tied him up in a clinch or with a flurry of jabstraight combinations.

The fight was on even terms until early in the sixth round when Pacquing unleashed a savage body attack. He staggered Naduma to the ropes with strong left and right uppercuts to the body.

Sensing a weakness, Pacquing swarmed all over throwing wicked combinations to the head and body of the back-pedaling

Naduma.

Naduma finished the sixth round on queer street. It was never the same again for the deposed champion as Pacquing took command of the fight until Naduma called it quits on the 11th round.

It was the first title defense of Naduma of his title. He won the crown by knocking out Ric Diamale in a title fight held in Manila in October, last year.

by TKO in the 4th round.

by TKO over Johnny Tabanas, and Joe Jamon by split decision over Jose “Pepe” Olano, in the preliminaries.

However, it was a pyrrhic victory for one boxer – Joe Jamon.

Shortly after coming down from the ring, he collapsed and was brought to the hospital in a critical condition.

Attending doctors gave him as of press time a 50-50 chance of survival.

It was the second tragic ring incident in Cagayan de Oro City in the last four years.

HILIPPINE No. 4 junior flyweight Cesar de la Cruz defeated No. 6 junior flyweight Roger Gamayot in their 10-round nontitle fight over the weekend at the Gold City Coliseum.

De la Cruz dominated the fight from the start, tagging Gamayot with crisp combinations to the head and body. The No. 4 junior flyweight repeatedly connected with stinging jabs and jarring rights to the head of the backpedaling Gamayot.

The loss dampened

Gamayot’s chances for a crack at the Philippine junior flyweight title of Tacy Macalos. Gamayot is managed by Dr. Antonio Almirante, who holds the option on the first defense of Macalos’ title.

Judge Dante Businos scored the fight, 9995, while Judge Jess Galarpe saw it 99-96, while Judge Dodong Artajao had it 100-96, all in favor or de la Cruz. Gamayot did not win a single round.

Initially, around 198 doses were administered to SPI power plant employees and subcontractors on August 12 at the Mindanao Power Plant, certified

by DOH-X as its vaccination facility for the administration of the vaccines. Just recently, 44 SPI Head Office employees in Makati together with their dependents completed their first dose of the company- sponsored vaccination.

SPI Power Plant Manager, Dr. Carsten Evers encouraged all its employees to be vaccinated from the dreaded COVID-19 virus.
