Today, it is

an economic powerhouse ranked among the top 15 countries in the world.” “Clearly, we need to ask Congress for additional budget; how else can we compete with other countries, when we are not investing as much in Higher Education?” Paras said. “Human resource is one of our greatest assets. Shall we be contented to be just OFWs or call center operators? SAP Asia Pacific Japan Accelerates Cloud Growth in Q2FY16 Taguig City, Philippines — SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced financial results in the Asia Pacific Japan (APJ) region for its fiscal year 2016 second quarter ending June 30, 2016. Non-IFRS cloud subscriptions and support revenue grew 47% at constant currency. Non-IFRS cloud and software revenue was up 9% at constant currency. Non-IFRS total revenues were €802 million. But until the loan is fully paid, the usual monthly penalties and interest will apply,” Salvado explained. Since the launch, the state-run pension fund has recorded a total of 1,115 accounts that have benefited from the Option to Sell Shares of Stocks Program as of the end of June 2016, while collections from these overdue SILP and PFLP payments have reached P63.56 million. “However, there are still nearly 7,700 SILP and PFLP accounts that remain unpaid. Velasco, MSU-IIT (Poster Contest, Professional Category) Research to address local health issues The research team’s focus on improving the delivery of health services to the end user is obvious from the scope of the studies which not only sought the end users personal evaluation of the health services they received, but to the local health boards’ utilization of the research findings to make data-driven decisions, as well as the systems needed to properly gather the collated data to arrive at proactive and responsive health legislations. “We are interested in the use of information for decision making and resource allocation. We are pushing for data-driven decisions,” said Dr. Roxas in an interview on the sidelines of the National Science and Technology Week 2016 in Region 10 celebration held July 23-26 at a local restaurant. While the team’s study which focuses on the Iligan Health District and the Oroquieta

Inter-Local Health Zone (ILHZ) generated lots of data, they found it was not optimized by the intended end users. An ILHZ is a form of interLGU cooperation to better protect the collective health of their respective communities, assure constituents access services for the health care needs of individuals, and manage limited resources more efficiently and equitably. It usually includes primary health providers, core referral hospital and end-referral hospital, jointly serving a common population within a local geographic area under the jurisdiction of more than one local government. A functional ILHZ is envisioned as one which provides health benefits to individual residents and the zone population as a whole. The ILHZ functionality could be gauged by zone-wide health sector performance results in terms of improved health status and coverage of public health intervention of the zone population; access by zone residents to quality care; and efficiency in the delivery of inter-local health services. “There’s a lack of local ordinances which actually address local health concerns. Our health officials are not really able to optimize use of the data to come up with local ordinances which prioritize urgent health issues in health budgeting to optimize available resources,” Roxas noted. The team said national mandates are merely being ‘localized’, thus local legislators just make local versions of national health laws, merely

cascading what’s mandated by the national office. For instance, Roxas cited the Dept. of Health’s (DOH) Electronic Field Health Services Information System which is supposed capture health data in computers and make these accessible nationwide. Computer Culture “But it’s not fully happening yet in the city and provincial levels. Data capture, storage and reporting at the barangay level are being done manually since they don’t have computers. Or, if they have computers, they don’t have an IT person. Also, many elderly midwives and nurses are not computer-literate and show some resistance to the use of computers.” Although barangay health units are striving to make the system work, most trainings are focused on the municipal and city level, with hardly any at the barangay level. “Given all these, even if there is supposed to be eHealth, the gathering, collating and transmission of data is still done manually by paper forms. eHealth has a higher utilization in the city, provincial and municipal levels but still the utilization of the system is low.” “Also, some key local decision makers do not have good access to data. So when it comes to prioritization of funding and budgeting for certain health concerns, these may not reflect local health data.” Of the two areas covered by the study, the team’s findings indicate the Oroquieta ILHZ has a higher level of accomplishment than the Iligan Health District in the Millennium Development

Although data was readily available through manuals and eSystems, they were apparently not being utilized to come up with data-driven decisions to allocate and prioritize health funding according to where they are most needed. Barangay Level Focus Meantime, a parallel study “Health Services Utilization and Customer satisfaction among Inter-Local Health Zones in Lanao del Norte Region 10” led by Pamela F. Resurreccion, College of Business Administration and Accounting, MSU-IIT, seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the structure for devolved services of the DOH, particularly

the ILHZ of Lanao del Norte. “DOH has devolved health services to the local level through ILHZ Lanao del Norte so we focused on what services were availed by the residents, sampled from eight municipalities, or two per ILHZ,” Resurreccion said. “Analysis was done at the barangay health stations, municipal centers and district hospitals at the ratio of one per ILHZ.” T h e t e a m ’s f i n d i n g s indicate that health services availed at the barangay level are more preventive such as immunization, medical checkups especially maternal health, while people tended to avail of curative services at the municipal and district levels for more serious cases. “Satisfaction levels are favorable. We recommended coming up with customer service modules in hospitals

and information, education and communications (IEC) campaigns to improve services further,” Resurreccion said. In another effort to further improve data capture and utilization, Prof. Lemuel Clark P. Velasco, IT Dept. Faculty of MSU-IIT, heads the team seeking to field test a Geographic Information System (GIS) using Google Visualization Aids for mass drug administration of Schistosomiasis in 3 phases: the first and second phases are done, development and testing of visualizations with the third phase for commercialization are ongoing. “This research will not be useful if it will not be used by an end user. The last phase to be done in the coming month is user validation of the tools by the target users, health officers, in areas with Schistosomiasis cases,” Velasco said.

Very often sometimes too often! - the thought is back! If we wake up in the morning (or even many times in the middle of the night), the thought is back. Sometimes, the thought will not let us sleep. The “act of thinking”. the “reflection”, the “opinion” or the “serious consideration”, no matter, how we describe it - our memory and conscience is always with us as a permanent companion. We brood over unsettled problem. Sometimes we bear unfair treatments, arrogance, ignorance, incompetent know-it-all-betters, and unbearable oddballs, who inexorable love to make our life a hell while living themselves a disorderly life. We would not like to be distracted, but we’re toying with

some good ideas how we could throw overboard all that “human garbage”. What will come next is a matter of conjecture. Of course, I’ve got my ideas, but I’m not a mind reader. Too many trains of thought make us thoughtless and absent-minded especially in difficult and important daily life situations. Does waiting and/ or sleeping solve our problems? Or is it just again in time? Our life’s central idea should not be, that while waiting, time solves all our problems. Thoughts should intensify, condense and deepen plans follow by actions. It’s good and helpful to carry thoughts in us all the time. Incomprehensible, or better unfinished and un-matured thoughts, no matter whether positive or negative, should be slept on, before

tiredness outstrips us with supersonic speed. Sometimes we feel that our thoughts and ideas can’t be fulfilled with life. Where the heart is willing, it will find a thousand ways; but where the hrart is weak, it will find a thousands excuses. If doubts begin to take roots, we should rouse from pink-tinted idealism or wear down and annihilate nightmares and erase and wipe out such thoughts and ideas. If our thoughts are good and have the chance to be fulfilled in action, especially if “the other side” is prepared and willing to step on to such a bridge of life, we might get a support and words of encouragement. And, if not? No action? Maybe it is God’s will to keep and protect us from a careless, rash, disadvantageous and uneasy action.

Ten HealthTech Solutions Advance to Takeda Digital Healthcare Innovation Challenge Pitching Competition Ten HealthTech startups have been selected to advance to the final Pitching Competition for Takeda’s Digital Healthcare Innovation Challenge (DHIC) on August 6, 2016 in Manila, Philippines. The finalists include six from the Philippines, two from USA, one from Malaysia and one from Thailand. DHIC is a HealthTech pitching competition sponsored by Takeda Healthcare Philippines, Inc. with technical assistance from TechTalks.ph.

HealthTech is a term generally used to define software or tech-enabled solutions geared for the healthcare industry. Following the open call for submission of applicants from around the world last May 10 to June 27, 2016, Takeda DHIC chose the top 10 entries with the most suitable and most relevant tech solutions for Oncology. Another Fun Hong Kong Trip de Oro

I just came from a super fun trip to Hong Kong with my husband, Elmer, and son, Dominic. It’s actually my and Dominic’s early birthday treat and celebration. These past few months had been very busy for me. My trusted house help left and as a homemaker, that’s a big deal. No kidding. So, I had to train the new ones and had to personally cook again daily for the family and do some household chores. I love what I do but sometimes, it can be physically tiring. But, I’m not complaining. Our trip was very relaxing because it was long. Four days in Hong Kong and some days were spent in Manila. I never get tired of visiting Hong Kong. Why? Because shopping is always satisfying there, they have good food, always fun at Disneyland and they have nice hotels. And of course, it’s very near the Philippines. Only two hours by plane… For shopping, we usually just go around the

Kowloon side particularly at Tsim Sha Tsui and shop at Lane Crawford and Harbour City. But during this trip, we decided to explore the other side of Hong Kong… The Hong Kong Island side. Went around IFC Mall and Pacific Place Mall. For me, I still enjoy the shops at Tsim Sha Tsui. But I was glad to have visited and experienced going to the other side. It was very easy to go from one place to another because of their subways. Before visiting Hong Kong, I listed down some places to eat that I got from the Food Network channel. Too bad we weren’t able to try any one of them as when we asked the hotel concierge, they said that the places are all far from the hotel. Maybe next time. We’ve tried some Michelin Star restaurants, though. Whenever I’m in Hong Kong, the first thing I crave for is their cold/iced Milk Tea. A must! As always, we stayed at our favorite hotel in Hong Kong, The Peninsula. For me, it’s still the best

hotel there. Location is good so anytime we feel tired, we can just go walk back to the hotel and rest, rooms and suites are relaxing, room service serves good food, very clean and service is great. When you stay there, you must get their Rolls Royce Phantom for your

ride. Try also their iconic and classic afternoon tea with sandwiches, pastries, scones and others at the lobby. I remember, it was a Sunday when we went to IFC Mall and we took the subway going there. There were so many Filipinos at the subway station and

at the trains. I assumed that it was their day off. I felt like I was in the Philippines. I felt at home right away. I just couldn’t help myself but I started conversations with some of them while in the train. Elmer was laughing at me because for him, … do I really have to talk? Why not? It’s fun for me! Happy to see their smiling faces. One thing I’ve noticed was that most of them were using their cellphones with headset and Viber probably talking to their families back home. Proud of our hardworking OFWs. Well of course, we never leave Hong Kong without a visit to Disneyland. This place never fails to make me happy. And yes, again, I ate my favorite fried chicken at Tomorrowland and mango pudding for dessert. A must try as well when you’re there. There’s also a new Star Wars ride but I decided not to join the boys because it was a roller coaster kind of ride and honestly, I’m scared. I’m only for ‘It’s A Small World’ ride type of

person. Traveling with the family is priceless. Save money to travel because memories are forever and time is really precious. Stop waiting for “the right time” to travel because before you realize, it might be too late already. Travel when you’re still young. I started traveling a lot at the early age of 23. America, Asia and Europe. I said to myself by the age of 30, I’ll stop and just stay home. But now, I just can’t because it’s so much fun and I want Elmer and I to have more fun travel memories with our son. Dominic has never been to some places where Elmer and I went to so I guess, we should do everything all over again with him. Now that he’s turning 14 years old, he now appreciates historical places. So, travel now my friends. Now is always the perfect time. Reminding you all to live life to the fullest!
