First set up near the San Antonio Parish Church some years ago by a family from Zamboanga City, three more establishments followed near Xavier University, along Corrales Avenue and Fernhill Subdivision in Macasandig, all set up by Zamboangueños who were most probably more homesick of Satti than interested in it as a business. However, the latest iteration of what is probably by now Zamboanga City’s most

popular breakfast fare is the first to be set up in a mall.

Halang Guys Satti Meals opened up its kiosk at Centrio Ayala Malls Pakals Market at its CV Roa Tents near the Centrio Gardens last August 5 to an enthusiastic reception led by the local Circulo Zamboangueño of which spouses Neil and Mel Que are members.

us with support this morning!! We are very overwhelmed!” said Neil in a post at their FB Fan page named NOW IN CDO Halang Guys Famous Zamboanga SATTI. “Also to all our Kagay-anon customers who braved the heat to try! Muchas Gracias!!!”

In fact, the reception was so enthusiastic that by late afternoon the kiosk had run out of Satti soup! “We’re resupplying sorry, be back in 30 minutes! Come join us

at the Centrio Pakals, it’s fun!” the Fan Page post reassured.

As Neil related, the Halang Guys Satti recipe was developed by his dad while was doing business in Jolo, Sulu in the mid 1990’s.

He introduced his Satti recipe to Zamboanga City as a product tie-up with the popular SLQ Lechon Manok stores where it has been a side-offering for over two decades.

Rotary CDO Premier partners with Masons in outreach IN line with Rotary International’s focus of fighting diseases, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier has relaunched One Mission in partnership with the Cagayan de Oro Lodge No. 298 of Free and Accepted Masons. The project is a free medical and legal mission that serves underprivileged communities.

CDO Premier visited Cooperative Village, dubbed Co-op Ville, in Barangay Mambuaya in the outskirts of Cagayan de Oro City last Saturday, July 22.

The community is a relocation site for those affected by Typhoon Sendong, the storm that displaced over 5000 families in 2011. The club provided general

consultations and health assessments as well as various legal services such as consultations, drafting of affidavits and other documents for notarization. Medicines and reading glasses were also distributed throughout the day.

In addition, Premier also hosted forums on two important issues: the Law on Violence

Against Women and Children and Stroke Prevention and Care.

The former was carried out as part of the VAWC Lecture Series, the club’s ongoing project with the various barangays of Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon.

he 7th edition of the R.O.X. Bike Fair peaked with a successful R.O.X. Bike Out held last August 6, 2017 at Centrio Ayala Mall.

“Some 200 Bikers joined the community bike ride which is part of a monthlong bike campaign which features a series of bikerelated activities and events nationwide,” said Norgelyn J. Bihag, Cluster Operations

Biochar study opens doors for rural, tech dev’t

Not all biochars are created equal—likewise, the average charcoal is no biochar.

A new research on biochar funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines (DOSTNRCP) has gained the interest of farmers, households, and rural developers through the direct application of its results, which is a feat for a basic research.

NRCP Division VI (Agriculture and Forestry)’s Dr. Gina V. Pangga, its proponent, studied the potential of common agricultural wastes like corn cobs, water hyacinth, mahogany receptacles, and rice hull and straw, to produce quality biochars as soil conditioner.

Not just charcoal Biochar in soil enhances crop yield,

resistance, and health.

Like charcoal, it is also made through pyrolysis— a.k.a., the process of burning materials with lesser oxygen—but where charcoal is for barbecues, biochar is for the fixing the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil.

While technically no fertilizer either, biochar benefits plants by its material structure: its tiny microscopic pores serve as excellent sites for nutrients and water

storage (especially during dry times), and also provide home for essential microbes.

Biochar can also separate soil contaminants in damaged soils as well as lessen carbon dioxide in the atmosphere—properties scientists deem useful for environment sustainability and climate change adaptation. the material used, cooking length, and temperature.

For instance, cooking beyond ideal range of 400

to 600 degrees Celsius yields charcoal instead of biochar.

“You want to maintain its desired qualities like porosity, absorption, and surface area,” explained Dr. Pangga, who is also a soil specialist.

Per 10 kilos of regular soil, 50 grams of biochar is required—a simple conversion of which allocates10 tons of biochar for every soil hectare.

High school students undergo Xavier Ateneo ‘writers for writers’ workshop

avier Ateneo’s College of Agriculture, in partnership with the Development Communication (DevCom) department through the Development Communication Society (DevComSoc) and development writing class, conducted its first writeshop for junior high school student writers in Cagayan de Oro City and Tagoloan on Saturday, August 5.

The writeshop, dubbed “Writers for Writers” (WFW), served as a pre-Manresa Days activity under the initiative of Rechelle Ann Tolinero-Barraquias, development writing instructor and Jeasselle P Villalobos, WFW project head.

The event covered eight topics in journalism: feature writing, radio broadcasting, copy-

reading and headline writing, news writing, science and technology writing, photojournalism, editorial cartooning, and editorial writing.

Lorenzo Lagamon, a student from St. Mary’s School who attended the feature writing workshop, shared: “What inspired me to join the writeshop, was my unwavering love for writing and journalism. It was great!

Well-organized and the lectures were easy to digest!”

From the millennial’s perspective, his favorite part about the writeshop was the lecture by writer Stephen Pedroza on how to tell a story using literary journalism.

“The writeshop was sharp, concise, and insightful. I initially expected it to be a runof-the-mill workshop where the basics would be taught (which is really

perennial already), but it was not. I learned a lot; by that, I mean: a lot. My friend, who was supposed to be in the SciTech writing, accidentally joined the feature writing writeshop and said he didn’t regret making that mistake. On a more personal level, I just hope I get to do justice in telling other people’s stories so that they’d be heard properly, accurately, and finally,” Lagamon wrote to the organizers.

He also shared a

few takeaways from the writeshop: “It definitely made me realize just how taxing and bold being a journalist or a writer is.

It made me realize how I took writing for granted, and that now, writers have a solemn duty to narrate the stories of the marginalized, the dismissed, and the silenced voices.”

CDO lactating moms donate for Marawi

O foster breast feeding and provide immediate aid to mothers and children af fected by the crisis in Marawi Cit y, the Modern Nanays of Mindanao held the Hakab Na Para sa Marawi on August 4 to 5 at SM Cit y Cagayan de Oro. The activity is also the group’s way to celebrate the World Breastfeeding Week slated annually on August 1 to 7. This is a global movement for action to promote, protect and suppor t breastfeeding by anyone, any where and at anytime.

During the first day of the celebration, about 106 members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program from the different barangays of Cagayan de Oro City joined in the simultaneous breastfeeding

of mothers from various par ts of the world or the so called Big Latch On. There were also discussions on the impor tance of breastfeeding which was led by the well-known obstetriciangynecologist in the city, Dr. Rico Bor romeo.

Dr. Bor romeo said that breastfeeding is impor tant to have smar t children since it is only from the mother’s milk whom the babies could get a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids— crucial for brain development in infants and children, and may help prevent cognitive decline in adulthood.

of breastfeeding which the doctor really appreciates is the fact that it helps in developing good physical attribute of children. Bor romeo said that there are cer tain components of the breast milk that aids in constituting good symmetr y of the face.

During the second day of the

event, there were 68 mothers who par ticipated in the simultaneous latch on and aimed to promote development in the environment and climate change, nutrition, food security and pover ty reduction, sur vival, health and well-being, and productivity of women and employment.

The proceeds of the t wo -day event will be used to augment the ongoing relief operations of the MNM namely the distribution of the ‘Malong Packs’ and the Community Kitchen where fresh and nutritious meals are ser ved to the mothers and children who evacuated from Marawi City.

Of festival and environment While writing this piece, the Kadayawan Festival 2017 in Davao City is just around the corner. Since every year, the celebration offers an incredible array of activities full of fun and joy: dance group competitions, street parties, and yes, a food trip at the strip.

Sure, Kadayawan is also everything about indulgence in the best cuisines that Davao has to offer. Kadayawan is indeed always a feast of sorts.

Living in Davao City for good since 1999 now, I observed the Kadayawan Festival becoming more and more attractive and enjoyable. I spoke with many tourists during last years and -of course! - expatriates, who kept on praising this festival and its incredible atmosphere. The friendliness and the warm hospitality of Davao people have been mentioned and experienced many times.

What a sign for this wonderful city.

Kadayawan means also environment in other words - thanking and protecting Mother Nature! This is actually what my heart touches most, because I am an advocate of environment protection! Sometimes, believe me, in the Philippines a tough job!

After several publications about this topic, also in this publication, I did receive several messages and mails telling me, what nonsense I would write about Mother Earth and how to protect her/it. One Anonymous even wrote me, that the nature knows how to help herself.

I just thanked this fellow guy for his very own opinion. During that time, I wasn’t really in the mood to start a (useless?) discussion.

Yes, our earth is still slowly (?) but surely dying - but, uninhibited innumerable people

are still on stage as H ave M y Say enviroment destroyers - free from worries and drive away eventually existing moral conf licts.

Don’t worry - I am not the one who is planning to destroy the Kadayawan Klaus Doring Festival joy and party feelings. I just still like to recall former Davao City’s mayor and now President of this country, Rodrigo R. Duterte’s Kadayawan message from 2009: “With global warming and climate change, a very real phenomenon in our lives now, we need to look to our indigenous people for wisdom and guidance as they have always been respected toward their relationship with the earth!”

This was 2009. How about now in 2017?

Yes, all of us need to do more more in protecting and promoting our environment.

As I mentioned it many times before: I hope and pray that plenty of us participate ACTIVELY if possible in a multi sector campaign of having a shared environmental responsibility. Start already during school education! It’s never too late.

Globe Telecom certifies 25 public school teachers in Batanes as Digital Thumbprint Program ambassadors

Twenty-five public school teachers from the province of Batanes were certified recently as ambassadors under the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), an award-winning program

by Globe Telecom, Optus, and Singtel created to turn the youth into responsible online citizens.

As ambassadors, the teachers are tasked with transferring the knowledge they learned from DTP facilitators and experts to co-teachers from other schools in the province.

“The manner we think, say and do leave remarkable thumbprints in the lives of others. In this digital era, everyone should be extra careful in getting along with people through social media by

adhering to moral norms of conduct and cyber education. As teachers, we are duty-bound to teach and model cyber values to our youth. This could be achieved via the Digital Thumbprint Program of Globe Telecom so we want to grab this opportunity to make a difference in how the youth interact online,” said Reynante Caliguiran, Schools Division Superintendent of Batanes, during simple ceremonies held at the Basco Central School in Basco, Batanes.

“About half of Internet users in our country are adolescents aged 17 years old and below according to the Philippine National Police, showing how vital the Internet is in molding the lives of the Filipino youth. As

a purveyor of digital lifestyle, Globe wants the youth to not just embrace the internet to learn, play, and socialize but also to be safe whenever they are online. Thus, we are glad that DepEd and our teachers and the province of Batanes support us in this undertaking,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications.

DOE Girds for Comprehensive Power Industry Audit The Department of Energy (DOE) together with various power stakeholders recently conducted a 3-day intensive workshop on the appropriate conduct of the performance assessment and audit of the entire power supply chain.

Under instructions of Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi, Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella, Assistant Secretary Redentor E. Delola with the DOE personnel led the workshop that started last Friday and concluded on Tuesday (1 August) in Mandaluyong City.

Cusi said: “We need a comprehensive performance assessment and audit on the power generation, transmission and distribution system and facilities to better picture the real state of the Philippine electricity industry. Our objective is to have a solid foundation towards data-driven planning and decision making.”

“The workshop equipped us with

necessary knowledge and strategies to enable us to conduct the audit as one strong energy family,” Fuentebella said.

Participants of the workshop had a thorough discussion on the framework in crafting the guidelines for the assessment of the performance of the generation, transmission and distribution systems and facilities.

The framework identifies the scope, parameters, process, responsibilities and timelines for the conduct of the audit pursuant to Department Circular No. DC2017-05-0008, the governing policy of the audit.

Once finished, the proposed guidelines will undergo focus group discussions with the electric power industry participants.

Corporation (IPC), recently celebrated two decades of success following the gathering of its biggest event for their recognized Isuzu clubs; Team Isuzu Pilipinas, Team Isuzu Car Enthusiast and mu-X Owners Philippines.

Dubbed as

“Isuzu Big Meet,” the event, which was held at Megatent in Libis, Quezon City, was made to promote camaraderie between Isuzu vehicle owners, as well recording the biggest gathering of Isuzu club members in one place.

More than 300 Isuzu owners with their vehicles joined the grand meet, which displayed Isuzu’s current light commercial vehicle line-up, namely the Crosswind AUV, D-MAX pick-up and mu-X SUV, alongside its iconic models like the Hi-Lander, Fuego pick-up and Alterra.

To make event more exciting, IPC held its first car show for stock and modified Isuzu vehicles. Open for all clubs are categories such as Best AUV, Best Pick-up, and Best SUV. Meanwhile for the modified categories, Isuzu clubs competed on Best Engine Setup, Best Sound/ Entertainment System Set-up, and

Best 4x4 Vehicle Setup.

Judged by IPC executives and members of the motoring media, champions emerged from each club; Victor Candelaria (Best AUV), Dr. Roman Remo (Best Pick-up), JT Lerma (Best SUV), Ivan De Castro (Best Engine Set-up), Deni Von Amatorio (Best Sound/ Entertainment) and Vic Makimkim (Best 4x4 Set-up). Each of them received cash prize, trophy, and premium Isuzu merchandise; as well as cash prizes and premium merchandise to the first and second runner-up winners.

In the summer of 2017 a Kagay-anon businessman visited Zamboanga City and experienced a Satti breakfast meal for the first time in their house. The visitor was fully convinced Kagayanons would also love the unique taste of the dish and convinced them to bring it to CDO. The Halang Guys brand was eventually approved by the DTI and finally gave the 20 year old recipe a name.

By July of 2017 a small commissary was set up in CDO with the help of many Kagay-anon friends and the first kiosk is now open at the ground f loor of Centrio Mall in the open area Pakals Market.

The classic Satti meal enjoyed by Zamboangueños include the beef let sticks and one puso of sticky rice cut and swimming in the piping hot Satti soup with one bottle of ice cold coke (in case of fire, kay haling ra ba!)

Minus the coke (P20) that would only cost you a very affordable P50. In case you opt for the ¼ chicken leg instead of the six beef let or chicklet sticks in the P50 package, it would cost you only P10 more.

And of course, like all traditional Satti houses in ZC, refills of Satti soup are free!

“You will know when a Zamboangueño or someone from Jolo is eating Satti because they would be slurping the soup in between bites while Kagayanons are more apt to dip their chicklets or beef lets in the soup and eat the puso separately,” said a compoblano (a fellow Zamboangueño).

Halang Guys is open from 10AM-730PM daily and will only be at the Pakals Market till September 5 so drop by today while the Satti is hot!

Don’t despair compoblanos, because Halang Guys is now looking for a more permanent home for their stall. With that way the Satti has been going, it’s most probably going to happen sooner than later. Come ya kita!

From basic research to invention Dr. Pangga collaborated with the Bataan Peninsula State University in designing a prototype stove for regular households to make their own biochars using agricultural and plant waste materials.

Her invention, together with her research, was unveiled by NRCP through a forum during the National Science and Technology Week celebrations organized by the Department of Science and Technology last month.

Her dual-purpose stove burns from 20 up to 75 minutes per load depending on the feedstock or input material. Some drawbacks may be due to its “pyrolytic design”: generating a yellow flame (due to low oxygen requirement to achieve pyrolysis) versus the usual LPGs that give off relatively “cleaner” flames and some questions on user safety; but overall, provides a neat alternative for mediumto-large-size backyard or outdoor cooking.

Keeping up with demand The increasing local demand for biochar meanwhile encouraged Dr. Pangga to seriously consider upgrading her prototype stove into a larger reactor able to supply biochar by the tons. She hopes to get funding from DOST’s applied tech agencies.
