he Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA) honored judges and partners in an evening show dubbed “Kumbira Moments” to mark the 20th anniversary of the flagship annual culinary show and competition now acknowledged to be the biggest and best outside Metro Manila.

The evening extravaganza hosted by LimketkaiLuxe Hotel through Mr. & Mrs. Albino Limketkai of Limketkai Sons Inc. honored eight Kumbira judges who have served in that capacity for the last decade and beyond.

Honored were Chef Alejandro “Sandy” Daza (10 years), Chef Josefina “Jessie” C.

Sincioco (11 yrs), Chef Myrna Segismundo (11 yrs), Chef Penk Tan (13 yrs), Ms. Michaela “Micky” FenixMacabenta (13 yrs), Chef Dietmar Dietrich (13 yrs, also the first corporate judge invited in 1996); Chef Norbert Gandler (14 yrs.) and Chef Eduardo Tuazon (18 yrs).

A ​ yala Business Club holds blood drive THE Cagayan de Oro chapter of the Ayala Business Club held a blood drive and free medical checkup last Friday at Centrio.

Ayala Business Club chapter PRO Rica Alinas said that the twin activities are part of their year-round outreach and corporate social responsibility.

Here in Cagayan de Oro, the Ayala Business Club is composed of Ayala Land – Alegria, Amaia, Avida, Ayala Corp.,

Ayala Foundation, Ayala Property Management Corp., Bellavita, BPI, BPI Family Savings Bank, BPI MS, BPI Phil-Am, Centrio, Globe, Honda Cars, Makati Development Corporation, Seda Centrio and Centrio.

A total of 187 bags of blood were collected after the activity, 87 of which would go to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC). The remaining 36 bags would be allotted to the Philippine Red

Cross. It was learned that the total blood donated could save 369 persons.

Four physicians from NMMC practicing Family Medicine also lent their expertise in the event for the free medical checkup. Free medicines for fever, cough and flu were distributed to the walk-in patients courtesy of Centrio.

Intensified NGCP safety campaign lessens electrocution cases, engages civilians

W

ith an improved line safety campaign focusing on public engagement and a new media approach, NGCP is registering a decrease in electrocution incidents involving power

transmission facilities across the country.

Information sessions focusing on transmission line safety and rightof-way were conducted in barangays and local government units identified as crucial to NGCP operations,

particularly project completion. A steady decline of electrocution incidents was observed, from a peak of 29 in 2012 to a 5-year low of 17 in 2015. No employeerelated accidents were also recorded for 2015 and 2016, as of press

time.

For the first semester of 2016 alone, the nationwide campaign has reached 120 barangays, 474 media outfits, and 320 local government units. In the weeks leading up to the national elections in May,

NGCP also carried out 12 forums in COMELECidentified election hotspots to reiterate line safety reminders and to increase public vigilance against ROW violations.

The campaign is in the process of widening its audience reach with NGCP’s partnership with the Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for the free airing of NGCP safety videos in cinemas nationwide.

Civilians, particularly the mobile-savvy generation, are also continuously being encouraged to report transmission-related incidents with the launch of the 0917-TIPNGCP (0917-8476427) / 0918-TIPNGCP (09188476427) hotline and email (TIPNGCP@ngcp. ph).

The only proof they had was the missing link, and if I am not mistaken, it’s still a missing proof until now.

To look for proofs is a mental activity, which is no longer a common thing nowadays, because it takes really time, effort and is too serious to think about. Yet, in Christian education, thinking right is very important.That’s why Philosophy is important in

Christian life.

To avoid error in thinking, the rules of right reasoning must be studied and mastered. It is really totally neglected in today’s modern education?

Thinking is actually an enjoyable activity but when one is pressured to get a good job for one’s sustenance, then the other more mundane become attractive.

After all, great thinkers many time do not get (good?) jobs... .

Spiritual writers like the British Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) noticed that mankind had stopped thinking even two centuries ago. That was during his age. Man probably stopped thinking even earlier. He has ceased many times to search for the truth.

THE youth are full of hormones. As kids grow towards puberty, testosterone in boys and estrogen in girls mixed with oxytocin will cause an introduction of sexual feelings. That is natural.

But kids are not mentally prepared for that

situation yet. To control their raging hormones, adolescents resort to various activities such as bonding closer friendships with each other. For instance, they hold eyeballs and meetups. (Ok so “eyeball” was a 2000-ish

term while “meetup” was a 2010-something concept.)

When unlimited phone texting was introduced to Filipinos in 2002, it began to revolutionize the way the youth interact with each other. And so texters clans were born.

an improvement not only in the participation of those who would join the competition, but also in the entries, plus in the cuisine around the city. And every year it became better, and better, and better when they were learning from us,” he said.

“Now we’re beginning to learn from the entries, now it’s the opposite. To us judges, this has become something we look forward to every year. Not only because we have a grand time, it’s a learning experience for us also and to me I credit that to the organization of COHARA. I see a wonderful band of self less and humble people, the organizers, that makes this event every year so successful. If we have an organization like this, in the entire country, not only in culinary competitions, we will have a very progressive country.

Indeed, the level of competition and culinary expertise has risen so that Chef Jessie Sonciocor admits it even changed some of her previous perceptions.

“Every year I come here is memorable but I was surprised with the specialty of Cagayan: the sinuglaw. It was the first time I was able to taste the dish and at first I was kinda hesitant to eat it, because with us combining fish with meat is a no-no. It made something unacceptable, acceptable!”

In a sharing segment following the awarding rites, the judges shared their experiences and insights of Kumbira during the years they were involved in it.

Said Ms. Micky Fenix-Macabenta, food writer, columnist and editor of FOOD Magazine: “When I came here I didn’t know what I was supposed to do but when I went through the motions with Chef Norbert. I said this is so interesting because it is a way for the people working in the industry to improve themselves through the chefs who come here as judges since I don’t think there were any culinary schools when we started.”

However, Celebrity Chef Sandy Daza noted, because of Kumbira, the situation has drastically changed over the years.

And so as I go around the country, my heart has always been in the provinces.”

“Even as we grew up in Manila competing in the bigger arena, as they said before, that arena is no longer in Manila now.

As the new president said, Imperial Manila is dead. The action is in the provinces. And clearly I would say in the next six years, in Mindanao.”

“With that in mind, it is your chance to get even bigger. But I would like to say that

the Philippines is not only about Mindanao.

It’s also about Luzon and Visayas, and that is what the National Food Showdown is all about.”

“I have actually retired, I shouldn’t be doing the National Food Showdown anymore. But I do this to unite Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on that stage. I hope to be able to continue this with the help of friends, people ask: how long have you been doing this in the provinces, and do you have a contract with this people. I don’t think so, it’s all a matter of friendship and a hand shake. And if you check there is no piece of paper at all that binds us together all these years.”

Chef Penk Tan concurred. “It’s really a learning ground for all of us, for me especially because I can see the evolution of the work, the art, from one to the other. And then I see them competing and through the time they are competing internationally for some of the competitors from the provinces.”

“It’s such a fulfilling thing for us to see we were judging them and eventually they compete so it’s more a learning experience for me for all that I’ve seen.

At the same time, the friendship grows, I was telling the organizers I shouldn’t be here because I have two other competitions abroad.

But I chose Cagayan because it’s family to me now.”

Chef Jessie spoke for all the honored judges in echoing the same sentiment: “Coming to Cagayan de Oro, I feel so at home with the people here. Napakabait ng mga

Kagay-anons. Feeling VIP kami dito that’s why it’s always nice to come back.”

Asked what they thought was the quality that enabled Kumbira to grow through two decades, Chef Sandy Daza immediately replied, “Humility!”

“To be able to operate something as successful as this, and being born in the business, you need a lot of humility to do that.

That’s my observation.

You have to give a lot and compete, and then accept winning, accept losing, that takes a lot of humility.”
