Less lonely, but not less broken, on ‘Babuyan Island’

It’s nice to be a fly on the wall when a couple’s making out.

No, this is not an article about being a peeping Tom. I’m talking about the Xavier Stage’s (TXS) rendition of German V. Gervacio’s Babuyan Island as seen from a more voyeuristic angle – and yes, it’s an R-18 play. You see, if you show up early, you and other early birds get to view the play from a dimly-lit space onstage

just behind the set. The same set where starlet Toni (Queenie Roluma) interrupts screenwriter Carlos (Nicco Sanchez) in the middle of his work for some beers and banter.

The story takes place on Babuyan Island – more specifically in Carlos’s roach-infested quarters, where we first find him all alone and busy at his typewriter well into the wee hours. Working on his

magnum opus, perhaps?

Unfortunately not, for his days of being a writer of some renown are far, far behind him at this point. To pay the bills, these days he’s settled for putting together screenplays for cheap erotic flicks, the sort that used to be popular back in the day but went into decline sometime in the early 2000s – the same period this play is set in.

It’s a job he finds deeply unsatisfying, and Toni’s waltzing in to shoot the breeze

with him doesn’t help his writer’s block.

If anything, she’s a distraction, and not just because she decided to show up flirtatiously in a red tank top and really short shorts. Carlos is irritated – not at Toni, but at his own failed attempts to come up with just the right lines for her and the rest of the cast for the movie they’re working on (they’re on set, that’s why they’re on the island). But Toni playfully teases him with lines of her own, until

he relents and decides that perhaps having a conversation with her would be a much better way to spend his time.

So what do they talk about? Well, movies (they are in that business, so might as well, right?). And their lives. More precisely, their complicated pasts: Carlos had been thrown in prison for writing against the government during the Martial Law years, has had not just one annulment but two, and now has a pending

domestic violence case in court, plus his overbearing mother lies gravely ill in a hospital bed back in the city. For her part, Toni had been molested by a pervy librarian as a child, and has had an unwholesome and turbulent life ever since. Says their creator Gervacio: “Gusto ko ng mga karakter na totoo kahit hindi niyo sila magustuhan (I want true-to-life characters, it doesn’t matter if you’ll like them).” So if you’re babuyan/PAGE 7

IT’S that time of year once again when couturiers from all over Mindanao converge in Cagayan de Oro to jive with the annual fiesta here and to boast their outputs.

On the first day of the event, members of the Oro Designers Fashion Guild which organized the three-day event starting August 3 at Limketkai Rotunda, presented their best designs. They were Ann Semblante, Angela Soriano, Alma Mae Roa, Benjie S. Manuel, Joshua Guibone, Juniel Doring, Gil Macaibay III, Mark Christopher Yaranon and Mavy Cooper de Leon. The next segment on the first

day was the men’s wear collection.

On the second day will be the turn of Ororama, the students of Cagayan de Oro-based Fashion Institute of the Philippines and guest designers from the cities of Iligan, Ozamiz and Butuan. On the third day will be the holiday collection of the Oro Fashion Designers Guild.

All in all, 30 designers are participating.

Started in 2011 under the leadership of Mark Christopher Yaranon, the 2017 Mindanao Fashion Summit is ably managed under the stewardship of Ann Semblante.

A Very Special Department Store I am sure, my dear readers, you’re expecting now a write-up about a famous shopping mall in the Philippines. Far from it!

Once upon a time, I drifted back on my lifetime’s way. That’s not bad. That’s sometimes really helpful. During my journey back, suddenly I saw a nameplate: Heavenly Department Store.

I came closer. The door opened itself wider and wider. A swarm of angels gathered together. One of them presented a shopping basket to me. “Enjoy your shopping, but do it carefully!” Everything what a Christian needs, could be bought in this department store. If one couldn’t carry everything home, one could be back next day, get the last bit and buy even more.

At first, I bought PATIENCE, the quality of enduring with calmness. LOVE, the human affection, was in the same shelve. A little bit deeper, I found SYMPATHY, the sharing of emotion, interest, and desire, and COMPREHENSION, the capacity of the mind to perceive and understand together with APPRECIATION, the setting of a valued one.

I added packages of WISDOM, the knowledge and the capacity to make use of it and additional bags of FAITH, the belief especially in a revealed religion. I relaxed a couple of minutes and then, I looked for STRENGTH, the important power or vigor and bravery and fearlessness. They should help me to continue my forward to future. I thought myself, that I shouldn’t forget MERCY, the leniency shown to a guilty person, and REDEMPTION, the deliverance from sin.

My basket was already stuffed. I started looking for the cashier. One the way there, I

found the PRAYER. H ave M y Say I needed it to avoid running dead straight into a sin. An angel advised me also never to forget PEACE AND JOY, hymn of praise and chant.

Now it was really time to pay all those Klaus Doring things. But the angel smiled and told me, “Take everything with you, where ever you may go.” I asked, “What do I owe you?” The angel answered, “Nothing, somebody paid already your bills long time ago. His name was Jesus!”

I found this fabulous and wonderful fantastic story in my published documents from September 1988, during my time in Abra while writing a column for the mission oriented TINIG NG BAYAN - a magazine for Filipinos abroad.

This here is a revised version, because in my opinion, no matter, where we are living on this globe, we should try to project this timeless legend on to our very personal daily life. You’ll find out, that it helps to survive in our life struggles especially in times right now.

Urban poor agency, Manila Water join forces to lower water rates in Taytay slums No more expensive water rates for urban poor!

Ridon said the project will reduce water rates from P50/cubic meter to about P13-P15/cubic meter, translating to almost four hundred pesos in monthly savings for other basic needs.

“These initiatives are among those which President Duterte promised when he made the commitment of a better, comfortable life for the Filipino family.”

Ridon said projects like these are critical in Lupang Arenda, one of the largest informal settlements in the country with 19,000 families.

“Beneficiary families had applied for individual water connections as early as 2015 in response to unscrupulous rates being charged by local water service providers. Only in this administration had their request been heard.”

Interagency support Ridon said this would not have happened without the support of Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) General Manager Joey Medina who immediately supported this initiative.

“The leadership of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) also gave the ‘go-signal’ for Manila Water to proceed with the pipe-laying.”

Genuine reforms Ridon said this is the type of resultsbased, reform-minded leadership and collaboration of agencies that ensures the greatest benefit for the public.

DILG 10 joins ASEAN Landmark Lighting Ceremony CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- In celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 50th Anniversary, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 10 supported and took part in the simultaneous ASEAN Landmark Lighting Ceremony held at DILG 10 Grounds, Cagayan de Oro City on August 8, 2017.

With the theme “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” DILG-10 Regional Director Arnel M. Agabe said that it reflects the Philippine government’s advocacy to promote unity with and among ASEAN member states and its global partners.

Upholding support to ASEAN To commemorate this historical event, the Landmark Lighting involved the 50 historic landmarks and sites in the Philippines that have served as venues for ASEAN meetings and activities or as hosts of ASEAN centers and institutions.

In Region 10, these places are the province of Camiguin, and the cities of Malaybalay and Cagayan de Oro City.

Agabe said that the DILG Regional Offices, Central Office, as well as attached agencies, are joining the festivity to show our full support to the simultaneous Lantern Lighting Ceremony.

“ASEAN is one way in complementing our efforts to ensure that we could effectively combat maritime

piracy, do something on environmental protection and preservation, promote peace and stability, tourism and as well as to ensure that there will be more investments, and more jobs,” Agabe said.

Further, he explained that ASEAN is also one organization where all people work together, coordinate and collaborate, to ensure that in times of disaster, there will be an immediate assistance coming from other member countries.

ASEAN in the next years The DILG Undersecretary for Local Government Austere A. Panadero graced the event saying, “This aggrupation will shape the future of our country relative to the nine other nations. Isa sa pakay nito is to promote stability in the region.”

The undersecretary explained that through ASEAN, there will be a Free Trade Zone or the free flow of goods. Moreover, he elaborated that the human resources can also move around ASEAN countries.

This will definitely change the landscape of the way how we relate with each other, even with the rest of the ASEAN countries,” said Usec.

Together with the DILG 10 personnel, representatives from Northern Mindanao’s National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and Philippine Public Safety College-Regional Training Center (PPSC-RTC) attended the activity.

The celebration showcased Cagayan de Oro’s homegrown talents from University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Gintong Amihan Dance Troupe and from Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) Rondalla.

This festive event was capped off by a three-minute fireworks display as the 6-foot ASEAN lantern was lighted at exactly 7:00 p.m.
