THERE are two ongoing summer art workshops at Limketkai Center.

The first one, jointly organized by Yahshua Intelex and Artsada Kagay-an, Inc., is called the Learn Art the Easy Way Summer Art Workshop.

It will be divided into two batches. The first batch has started theirs from April 4 to 29 with

classes every Monday Wednesday and Friday beside Limketkai Events Center. Each session is three hours long from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The second batch will commence on May 2. For parents who are interested to enroll their kids for the second batch, you may contact 09173297592.

The 12-session

workshop consists of basic elements of art, portrait, animation, water colour painting, clay art, acrylic painting and t-shirt painting. All participants will be given art materials, t-shirt, certificate and a slot in the culminating exhibit in exchange for a very minimal fee.

RDC-X holds sector consultation on NorMin’s FY 2017 priority programs and projects The Regional Development Council in Northern Mindanao (RDC-X) held simultaneous sector committee consultations on the FY 2017 priority programs and projects of 26 agencies on April 7, 2016 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant, Cagayan de Oro City.

About 200 representatives of government agencies, local government units, state universities and colleges, and non-government organizations participated in the review of the FY 2017 budget proposals of the regional offices of DOLE, DILG, CHED, DOH, DepEd, TESDA, NHA, DTI, BFAR, DA, DENR, DAR, MGB, EMB, DPWH, LTO, MARINA, PPA-PMOs, NTC and NIA. The 2017 budgets of six State Universities/Colleges ( CPSC, NMSC, MOSCAT, CMU, MSUIIT and MOSCAT) were

also presented.

RDC-X Secretary and NEDA-X Assistant Regional Director Mae Ester T. Guiamadel presented the FY 2017 Regional Budget Priority Framework to ensure that the proposed agency budgets support priority infrastructure and socio-economic projects identified in the Regional Development Plan, and consistent with the regional budget prioritization criteria in terms of relevance, effectiveness and propriety.

The sectoral committee consultations were presided over by Dr. Erlinda Burton (RIMCU) for Macro and Development Administration; Director Alfonso P. Alamban (DOST-X) for Economic Development; Mayor Nelieta Q. Noval (Tubod, Lanao del Norte) for Social Development; and Mayor Philip T. Tan

(Tangub City) for Infrastructure/Utilities Development.

Recommendations included the following: 1) ensuring the inclusion of peacebuilding programs/projects for conflictaffected areas; 2) considering the needs of indigenous peoples and persons with disabilities

(PWDs); and 3) strict implementation of the mandatory provisions in the Joint DBM and concerned agencies budget circulars such as the 1% of the total budget for PWDs and senior citizens, 5% for Gender and Development, and at most 20% of the 2016 budgets for Bottomup-Budgeting (BUB) projects.

Mayor Tan also pushed for the inclusion of the proposed Complementary Strategic Investment Program (CSIP) for the Panguil Bay Bridge (PBB) Project in the FY 2017 budgets of concerned agencies. The CSIP contains projects that would facilitate the implementation and

operation of the PBB and the development of its direct impact areas.

The final FY 2017 budget proposals of Region X agencies will be presented to the RDC-X during its 108th Full Council meeting on April 12, 2016 and to the RDC Advisory Committee on April 15, 2016. (Peleta B. Abejo, DRD, NRO-X)

am so happy with this project because it helps so many people, especially women. Not to mention that they also have fun doing it together with their neighbors and friends from their barangay.

Last week, we had a livelihood project with Kap. Bingo Ebabacol at Barangay 17 but I was not able to join because I had to prepare for my son’s Recognition Day. So, my husband, Elmer, was the only one who went for the project to turnover the Sewing Machine and Linens.

is another joint undertaking by www.

ElmerFrancisco. org and Sealed Air / Diversey Corporation represented by Mr. Stefan Phang that was actually born out of the need for packaging for the finished products of our Soap for Hope livelihood project (which I also featured here in my column before). We thought of using the sanitized used linens of hotels to make pouches for the soaps.

For this particular project, we collect sanitized used linens from hotel clients of Diversey worldwide such as Shangri-La Hotel, Peninsula Hotel, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Hilton Hotel and others to donate to our beneficiaries. These tons of white linens are practically for waste disposal already by these hotels and would probably end up in dumpsites which is not good for our environment.

Here, we recycle these linens and turn them into something worthwhile like polo

Our beneficiaries were creative with these linens and created their own concepts. At Macapaya Relocation Site in Barangay Camaman-an, they even had a mini fashion show to showcase their finished products.

They also accept orders already for wedding and corporate giveaways.

In addition to the linens, we also donate sewing machines so that our beneficiaries could easily make the pouches for soaps, rags and/or anything creative they might think of.

With this noble project, we practically turn trash into cash to benefit those who need them most.

Moral and Human Values In these eventful times with shouting for peace all around the globe but also with “lust after war”, with corrupt politicians and terrorism attacks against innocents and with cries for justice, it is very easy to forget moral and human values. People, don’t let this happen!

Allow me to ask you a question: “What makes a modern person?” Technology and knowledge for sure? If not, we couldn’t operate with our computers or other things. Skills, of course, belong to it. But more important are a attitudes and values, and our readiness for new ways of reacting, feeling and looking for things.

I am afraid that we have to look first into ourselves. Everybody of us can notice our group feeling besides terrible egoism many times. We care so much for the good of our own families and ourselves by making great sacrifices even

for a long time. Charity starts and ends mostly at home. Why are we not able to develop fidelity that expands into a wider field of action so that we can go beyond the limits of our unsocial system and reach to others around us?

We easily blame our government. This happens in mostly every country worldwide.

But don’t we only get the government that we deserve? Misuse, improper treatment, rude language and behavior, corruption these are all ref lections of ourselves. The mistake, the injustice, the wrong sense of values, and the lack of priority through arrogance and ignorance are daily with us and simply our own.

A nation might have been rich with abundant blessings; it is only unfortunate that these blessings could not made useful because of some f laws in the entire system.

Why do we have

collapsing economies or huge foreign and national debts? Because human values are not put into place. It’s easier to fill own pockets then to care for a neighbor.

Aren’t we paid for the service we rendered that we resort to other unlawful and shameful activities? Are we really prioritizing material things over and above spiritual satisfaction?

We are becoming weaker and weaker when we lack punctuality, honesty, and task responsibility.

We have to improve as human persons with national pride, discipline, and consistency, because skills and knowledge or technology are not enough. We have to avoid too much subjective comments, sensitivity and being fancy and conceited of ourselves. If a nation like the Philippines is still rich of natural resources and intelligent, highly creative people, these people should prevent criticism

Creating a ‘smarter’ city through the Human Centric Innovation

ifferent nations are now embarking on a journey to become smar ter. But with the looming population growth worldwide, how will it be possible for one cit y to address their setbacks for growth?

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), the world’s urban population is expected to grow to 70 percent by 2050. This trend makes efficient resource usage and traffic even

bigger challenges, making sustainable urbanization more relevant than ever.

“There’s going to be a completely different paradigm of the world coming,” said Rio Yamaura, vice president of Fujitsu’s New Solution Business Division.

According to Yamaura, the concept of having a smar ter city is rooted from the amalgamation of people, infrastructure and information, with people at the

This is the Human Centric Innovation, an approach to creating business and social value by empowering people with the power of technology.

During the recently held Fujitsu Asia Conference in Makati, City, Yamaura explained that Singapore adopted this approach to create a “futuristic urban city.”

agreement with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) and Singapore Management University to harness ICT in developing solutions for sustainable urban operations including crowd mobility and transpor t engineering.

The researchers use Singapore as a ‘living lab’ to examine how topof-the-line solutions may help address real urban issues.

Yamaura said, “Fujitsu’s visions to create a smar ter city was proven by one countr y here in Asia,” he said. “But the truth is, there’s no smar t city— it’s the people who make it smar t.

With that, the company has been putting people at the center of its innovation, empowering them to harness information to create value.”

The Human Centric Innovation brings together the three dimensions of people, information and infrastructure to create connected solutions and ser vices that are vital in realizing value now and in the future.

To create a roadmap for growth, Fujitsu aims to star t with individuals by empowering them to openly collaborate within their organization and in outside communities. Next is to transform the business model by bringing together people, infrastructure and information at the enterprise level. 3,000 Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries graduate from college The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) recently announced that there have been 3,139 grantees of the Expanded Students Grants-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGP-PA) who will graduate from college ending the school year 2015-2016. Ninety of these students have graduated with academic honors and awards.

The graduates are from the households under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, a human development program that invests in the health and education of children 0 - 18 years old from eligible poor households.

ESGP-PA helps in increasing the number of graduates in higher education among poor households and to get these graduates employed in high-value added occupations.

DSWD Secretary Corazon JulianoSoliman said that the government’s investment in the education of students from poor households pays the best interest

in the future. A higher education gives the graduates a better start in the world of work.

“The government is gradually reaping the fruits of the investment it made four years ago.

Finishing a college degree gives these youth a fighting chance of improving their lives,” Sec. Soliman said.

As part of the national government’s effort of addressing problems of unemployment and alleviating poverty, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) launched SGP-PA in 2012 in partnership with DSWD, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Philippine State Universities and Colleges (PASUC).

In 2014, the program expanded its target hence the name ESGPPA. Under the program, a student-grantee receives a maximum of P60,000 per school year to cover tuition fees, school supplies, food, clothing, lodging and other school related expenses.

can choose among the identified priority degree programs of CHED. These include courses related to information technology (IT), agriculture, education, science and math, engineering, and health sciences.

Sec. Soliman shared that ESGP-PA helps in increasing the number of graduates in higher education among poor households who will have high-value added occupations in the future.

“This is just the beginning. Every year, there will be graduating students under ESGPPA. In the succeeding years, we are confident that more families will have better lives and later on move out of poverty. It is still a long way before we live in a society free from poverty but what is important is that the government is making concrete action to achieve this,” Sec. Soliman said.

For academic year 2014-2015, there are 36,850 ESGPPA grantees who enrolled in different state universities and colleges nationwide.
