ctivities for the homecoming of Kagayanon beauty queen, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the reigning Miss Universe Philippines 2015, are now set.

According to Sean Oliver P. Moreno, an active sports and youth advocate son of Mayor Oscar Moreno, said the warm welcome for Miss Pia Wurtzbach this coming May 2 will be unique and different from other homecomings because of its concept ‘beauty meets sport.”

For giving prestige and pride to Cagayan de Oro, a motorcade around the city will be dedicated to Ms. Pia, said the mayor’s son.

Unlike other motorcades, the homecoming parade will be participated by bikers and runners of the city who will participate of the Rafthon competition (rafting-runningfellowship), according to Mr. Sean Moreno, race director.

Other activities on May 2 include a joint press conference, the unveiling of Rafthon, and a ‘Meet and Greet’ with Ms. Pia Wurtzbach.

Apart from Miss Universe Philippines, Cagayan de Oro also takes pride on Ms. Catherine Almirante after being chosen as Ms. Global International second runner-up.

Lucky Mallers who were at Centrio Mall at Cagayan de Oro last April 18, Saturday were treated to a 3-in-1 day-long celebration of the food, music and film of Spain through The Gastronomy Festival, a celebration of the arrival of Madrid Fusión in Manila.

Spain’s most important international gastronomy event for progressive haute cuisine, Madrid Fusión Manila runs from April 24-26, 2015, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, the first time ever it is being held outside Madrid, through the efforts of the Department of Tourism as part of their ‘Visit Philippines 2015’ project.

Ayala Malls partnered with DOT’s Flavors of the Philippines (a part of VYP 2015) to highlight the fusion of FilHispanic flavours and instil in the participants a better appreciation of the Spanish culture, especially how its culinary heritage is reflected in our own

cuisine.

The Gastronomy Festival started off with the rendition of a Flamenco dance, an art and music genre originating in Andalusia, southern Spain by Centrio Mall mixed dance instructor Malou Boluhan, as an introduction to the Film Screening of “18 Comidas”, a feature film in partnership with Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan Center for Culture and Arts and the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines. The second

feature film by Jorge Coira, “18 Comidas” features an unusual series of interconnected stories and improvised dialogues centered on the meals of the day.

The film screening was designed as a prelude to Pelikula, a Spanish Foodie Film Festival that depict the rich art of gastronomy which is now being screened until April 26 exclusively at Greenbelt 3 cinemas in Makati City.

The Capitol University Dance Troupe rendered a spirited rendition of La Jota Moncadeña, a famous interpretation and adaptation of the Aragonese Jota dance (better known to the people of Moncada, Tarlac as Jota Florana) originally meant to accompany a bereaved family to the burial of a loved one. The Jota Moncadeña is similar to other Filipinized versions of the Spanish jota, combining Spanish and Ilocano dance steps and music.

Later in the program, the CU Dance Troupe also rendered their version of Lanceros de Tayabas, a dance originating from Tayabas (now Quezon province) that figured in their komedya performances. The

name is a reference to the knights and lancers of King Arthur’s court and the dance was originally performed in palace ballrooms.

Fiesta!s centerpiece was a prelude to the Cagayan de Oro Hotels and Restaurant’s (COHARA) Sinuglaw Festival, which officially kicks off Kumbira 2015, the largest culinary event outside Metro Manila.

VIP Hotel Chef Isidro “Titing” Sobriano conducted a demo on how to prepare this unique Kagay-anon delicacy, after which 16 other COHARA establishments also exhibited their own versions followed by a food sampling by lucky spectators as classical guitarist Joshua Arrabaca rendered Spanish songs.

Sinuglaw is a combination of sinugba and kinilaw.

Sinugba refers to the grilled pork sliced into bite-size pieces which is already a dish in

itself, while Kinilaw is the raw fish soaked slightly in sweet tuba and marinated with merged with onions, suwa (native lime), tabon tabon fruit, ginger, and salt.

Tabon-tabon and Suwa gives the Kagay-anon Sinuglaw its distinctive taste and aroma.

The participating COHARA establishments included Ah Fong Asian Cuisine, Apple Tree Resort and Hotel, Barkadahan Grill, Bigby’s Café, De Luxe Hotel, Duka Bay Resort, Hotel Conchita Kagayanon Restaurant, Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Mapawa Nature Park, N Hotel, Seda Centrio, Thai Me Up and The VIP Hotel.

hink a minute…Imagine there was a safe, legal drug that not only made you feel good, but was actually good for you. And best of all, it was free! A former drug addict named William Burroughs says: “Every feeling you get on drugs you can get without drugs.” People who get high on marijuana often say they can laugh at anything. But they’re wrong in thinking that the fun comes from the marijuana.

It’s actually their own ability to laugh and have fun which they already had. So all the drug problems of harming our bodies and brains, hurting our families and relationships, ruining our jobs and careers, just are not worth it.

The fact is we were born with powerful chemicals already in our bodies that can give us these great feelings and highs. But how do we activate and enjoy these amazing great feelings? Simply by choosing to. Did you know that fun and happiness is actually a choice? When we choose to be happy, to laugh, to have a positive attitude, and to love others, then our whole body chemistry changes. We get new energy, confidence, and a totally new perspective on

our situation and life. We just feel better in every way.

Just Think a Minute…

few weeks ago, while waiting for my boarding call, I was sitting in one of the waiting areas of NAIA airport and was observing all the fellow travellers around me.

Hundreds of people with their luggages sitting around or walking past me, up and down the corridors to and from the gates, pushing trolleys and carrying bags.

Everyone seemingly having their own reasons on why they are on their journey and fly to their respective destinations.

Travelling has always had its beauty and mysteries. Maybe out of a mix of curiosity and boredom I started guessing possible reasons for all these people to move around. Maybe a business trip, a holiday, a family reunion, balikbayans, somebody visiting their girlfriend, daughter or sick parent, a funeral maybe. It actually started fascinating me about why people move from one place to the other.

To my surprise she had no idea what that even was and how it worked. I kindly offered to give her an overview about her possible options apart from the ziller/PAGE 11

The tribal queen leading the pack with decisive look and holding everyone’s passports, followed by the husband surrounded by half a dozen noisy kids aged between 5 and 15, then a fearful looking couple pushing heavy loaded trolleys right behind them and grandma with grandpa following the group. It made me really smile and it would have been worth taking a picture.

Back in Cagayan de Oro I happily acknowledged how the city had improved its tourism infrastructure in recent years with the building of the new airport, new roads and some new luxury hotels.

Finally the city can offer travellers a choice; everything is there.

Surrounded by all those beautiful places like the waterfalls of Iligan, the cool mountains of Dahilayan, Bukidnon, and the mystic Camiguin Island, the region is really blessed with beauty. If

couldn’t hold my tears while experiencing when German Wings victims have been remembered in solemn Cologne service yesterday.

Cathedral bells have marked the end of a somber memorial service held in the western German city of Cologne to pay tribute to the 150 people killed in last month’s German Wings plane crash.

The ceremony was at Cologne Cathedral, one of the biggest German cathedrals and many times my hidden place of prayers, for the victims of the German Wings crash ended just like it began, with the cathedral’s bells ringing out across the city on this sunny Friday afternoon, and a choir singing.

Hundreds of mourners attended the national memorial service in Cologne’s landmark cathedral on Friday, including German President Joachim Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Gauck, the main speaker, told the service the nation was still in “enormous shock” over the tragedy of flight 4U 9525, which crashed into the French Alps on March 24, killing all 150 people on board.

“Since this day, nothing has been what it was for these families and friends” of the victims, Gauck said. “Something was destroyed that can never be healed again in this world.”

Surpassing Quantum Encryption

I

T security is a fast moving and exciting field to be in.

Fascinating industry news greets me almost every morning.

Recently I read that the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, China is leading a project to build the world’s longest quantum communication network stretching 2,000km between Beijing

and Shanghai by 2016.

The builders hope to give completely secure communication to users though quantum encryption.

That’s certainly a big ambition.

A quantum communication network is, in theory, unbreakable.

Any attempt to intercept the encryption key would alter the physical status of the quantum data, or

but that doesn’t stop me from asking if one single technology − no matter how perfect − can be the be-all and end-all solution to one of the most complex problems facing mankind today.

I can see two hurdles standing between quantum encryption and widespread adoption – the cost-benefit proposition, and more importantly, the existence of weak links in other parts of the security system even if quantum encryption itself is impenetrable.

Are the Benefits Worth the Cost?

There are no clear indications of quantum qubits, and trigger an alert encryption’s costs yet but it’s likely to be to the communicators.

Currently, there are several high, especially at the initial stages when the other labs in various countries around the world technology is immature are looking to tap into this and the pool of users is small. Businesses are all technology.

Is quantum encryption about increasing profit and reducing expenditure the holy grail of IT security, if such a pinnacle − low cost encryption exists? I can certainly relate technologies that are to the quantum encryption secure enough for most enterprise applications developers’ dogged already exist today. So how pursuit of unhackable will organisations justify security technology,

the big jump in costs for moving to quantum encryption?

Your Enterprise is as Secure as its Weakest Link The tougher challenge lies in the fact that security is an interconnected system, not an isolated jigsaw piece. If quantum encryption is really hard to crack, cybercriminals will look for a weaker link in the security system to target. They could, for instance, use social engineering to gain knowledge on how to access confidential data, or they could, like most hackers do today, plant malicious software in endusers’ computers to steal their data when it is at rest.

Since quantum encryption only promises to protect data in motion − which is just one link of the entire security chain − labeling it as an “unbreakable security” technology is overreaching. Many technologies lie beyond quantum encryption, and many domains lie beyond technology.

Boosting overall security requires us to continuously strengthen the weakest link of the chain, as and when it appears. To be successful, there must be concerted, industry-wide action to concurrently upgrade individual components of the security chain.

That means that while security solution providers work hard to share threat information and develop their technologies, enterprises and consumers must take time to learn more about cyber security and guard against attacks, CERT teams must improve their response capabilities; and institutions worldwide must step up their efforts to groom cyber security talent.

The list goes on, and the stakeholders involved are many. These stakeholders need to do their earnest best in their respective fields, and cooperate with one another. That − not quantum encryption alone − is the real key to making the world a more secure and livable place.

Christmas starts September at One Oasis Cagayan de Oro Yes, you heard that right!

Association dues are what condominium owners pay property managers like ProExcel for the monthly maintenance of the common areas and facilities like the corridors, building lighting, parking areas and amenities such as the clubhouse and swimming pool.

However, Mr. Homez said it is also a common practice for lessees to pay the association dues on top of their monthly lease since they are the ones using and benefiting from such facilities.

At the same time there are fully furnished apartments who can be rented weekly, monthly or yearly like a hotel room. She stared at me for a while but seemed relieved about what I just told her.

She asked me for help if I could suggest a place like that and I gave her the numbers of the leasing manager in Primavera Residences where in fact there are fully furnished units available for short term rentals. It was

exactly what she needed.

A few days later she texted me to inform me that she had found a nice 1 bedroom unit she could rent on a weekly basis and was thanking me also for my help. I was glad I was of help and it made me realise that health tourism as a contributor to the city’s tourism market has been maybe underestimated so far. Now I’m curious to know how many other people have had a similar experience like this lady from Bukidnon.
