The Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB) recently sent off its first batch of Cadet Pilots for an intensive aviation training program at Flight Training Adelaide (FTA), Australia.

The first of 16 Cadet Pilots were culled from over 12,500 applicants after a rigorous screening, series of

tests, medical and physical examinations, and an aviation foundation course at the Philippine Academy for Aviation Training in Clark Field, Pampanga last month.

he Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB) recently sent off its first batch of Cadet Pilots to an intensive aviation training program at Flight Training Adelaide (FTA) in Australia.

The batch is composed of 16 Cadet Pilots who were selected from over 12,500 applicants.

The applicants went through screening and a series of tests, as well as medical and physical examination, with 16 candidates attending an aviation foundation course at the Philippine

Academy for Aviation Training in Clark Field, Pampanga last month.

Among the 16 successful cadets were two Mindanawnons: Darryl Dave G. Ditucalan of Iligan City and Dexie Jay Aljas of Banga, South Cotabato.

Ditucalan is a certified Electronics

and Communications Engineer (ECE) who graduated Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude from the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology.

He was a board top notcher, placing third for both the Electronics Engineering and Electronics Technician Board Examinations. He has also presented his thesis to various national and international conferences.

Like Ditucalan, Aljas is also a registered electronics engineer and technician. He was a Dean’s Lister from

the Cebu Institute of Technology-University and was an Essay Writing Contest Champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Association Inc. (CESAFI) and 2015 ECE Regional Quiz Show Champion.

The rest of the first batch of cadets represented a cross section of the country’s main geographical regions.

Xavier Ateneo 2017 valedictorian among Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines Xavier Ateneo’s 2017 class valedictorian Brian Adam Anay was named one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) on Monday, April 23 in the Malacañang Palace.

After the awarding ceremony, Anay wrote in an online post: “May this award inspire more Mindanaoan youth to excel in academics, social responsibility, and leadership. May this award inspire more people to stand up for something and be more proud of our identity as an island. May this award inspire more youth to actively become modern heroes in their own communities.”

The TOSP program honors the country’s most notable students who not only excel academically but also dedicate themselves as exceptional leaders and community servants in order to make a difference in their respective circles.

Anay revealed that during his final interview he was asked, "What is the importance

of being an outstanding student?"

He answered: “The importance of being an outstanding student is one's ability to empower.

Empowerment is not measured by the number of people reached through one's projects and community works.

Empowerment is being able to inspire courage in someone, one person at a time.”

Anay, a graduate of BS Development Communication, dedicated the award to everyone who helped him become the person he is right now.

Besides being the class valedictorian and a cum laude, Anay was the Outstanding Graduate Awardee of the XU College of Agriculture in 2017.

He also won the ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao (Region X) interschool newscasting competition in 2016 and is a member of Dulaang Atenista, a theater company at Xavier Ateneo.

Anay was the team leader of the first season of the “I Am Mindanao,” a social media campaign aimed at educating the public, particularly, the youth of Cagayan de Oro City and its neighboring areas on violent extremism, strengthening the sense of pride of being Mindanaoans, and empowering millennials to take part in peace outstanding/PAGE 7

For helping improve the daily lives of these Filipinos through its corporate social responsibility programs, Smart Communications received several awards, including two top citations, at the 53rd Anvil Awards. Organized annually by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, the Anvil Awards is considered the Oscars of public relations in the country.

In a ceremony held recently in Taguig, Smart won the Grand Prix Award for having the highest number of Gold Anvils this year.

The company also got the Grand Anvil recognition for SHINE OS+ (Secured Health

Information Network and Exchange), an electronic medical record (EMR) system that enables health facilities to provide faster and better service to their patients. The Grand Anvil is given to the most outstanding PR program of the year.

A few years ago, workers in rural health units had to manually file and search for patient records. The practice was timeconsuming, especially for patients who had to wait for medical files to be retrieved before they could consult with a doctor. Patient records were also at the risk of damage by rodents and the weather.

Today, a number of health facilities can retrieve patient files with just a few clicks on a laptop. Workers can now serve more patients, refer them electronically to better-equipped health facilities, send SMS reminders for appointments and medication, and submit relevant patient information to the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. for

Best wishes and goodbye When letters were the only form of written correspondence, signing off was obvious. Actually I am still adopting that old tradition. No matter, if it comes to letters or emails. It’s just a matter of respect and education.

If addressing a sir or madam, it was unambiguous.

You concluded “yours faithfully”. When writing to a specific person – for example, a Mr or (hey, ladies first!) – it was simple, your letter would always be signed off “yours sincerely”. Only missives to family or close friends would ever finish with a “love from” or “with much love, yours”.

For many people, there’s a weird status thing when it comes to the more blunt you are in emails.

I’m asking myself, why? An email is just a letter - an online one ... .

Sad to say, the arrival of email has disrupted this etiquette, making the rules far less obvious.

Indeed, for many of us there are no rules. A whole subculture of personalized email sign-offs has emerged everything from “TTFN” to “peace out”.

And of course, it’s not just what we say but why we say it. Neither in English nor in any other language. I get the same stuff in German written emails and even letters or text messages.

“Emails have become the medium of business, leisure, family, love and everything,” says children’s author Michael Rosen. When we sign off emails, we try to give off the “right vibe”, he adds. He says it’s all about how we want to come across to the recipient.

“Thoughtful, grateful or just very, very busy?” Oh sure, we are all so very, very busy... .

Some of the most successful business people are notoriously blunt in email communication – if they even bother with a sign-off at all.

“There’s a weird status thing when it comes to the more blunt you are in emails, the more you can be (blunt) because you’re senior in the company,” says author Emma Gannon, recalling the editor of a famous newspaper whose response to pitches was often just a curt “yep” or “nope”.

Although being Have My Say succinct can convey a certain authority and status, it also communicates a dose of self-importance or arrogance. And we’ve all dealt with bosses who fire off email edicts of “is this done?” or “update me on that”.

Klaus Doring Even if they are not so direct, many emailers like to convey a sense of being busy by using or adapting abbreviations. So “kind regards” becomes “KR”, or “yours” may do away with pesky vowels to leave “yrs”.

“When someone signed off ‘BR’ for ‘best regards’, I just thought they were cold, brrr,” says Gannon.

And, in my opinion, sorry to say, I even don’t reply anymore after receiving such correspondence. Oh sure, we are all busy, but there should be just a minimum of respect, if I communicate with someone.

Many times, there are those who pare it down to the absolute minimum, signing off with simply their name or even just the initial letter of their forename.

Others might omit a sign off altogether. While this may come across as peremptory or rude, at least it avoids misinterpretation.

Nearly formal but not totally formal, but they’re not as informal as ‘CU in a MNT on bus OMW’.

Some people swing the other way and end their emails with an altogether friendlier tone. While most would consider that kisses have no place in a business environment, they often creep into emails – and sometimes from people the recipient has never even met. Rogers (hereafter, “petitioner”) filed an Amended Petition for the Judicial Recognition of a Foreign Divorce Department of Foreign Affairs and City Civil Registrar of Cagayan de Oro City (hereafter, “respondents”). Petitioner prays in the instant petition that judgement be rendered: (1) confirming and recognizing the foreign divorce; (2) ordering the respondent to change the status of the petitioner from “married” to “single”; and (3) authorizing the petitioner to remarry pursuant to Article 26 of the Civil Code.

Petitioner alleged in the instant Petition that she is a Filipino citizen while respondent George David Rogers is an American citizen and that they were married in Cagayan de Oro City on May 04, 2002. Petitioner also alleged that respondent George David Rogers obtained a divorce by virtue of a divorce decree issued by the District Judge in the State of Louisiana, United States of America, on July 10, 2009 .

In support of the instant Petition, petitioner attached the following documents: (1) Certificate of Marriage of petitioner and respondent George David Rogers; (2) Certification issued by Louise Bond, Clerk of the Fourth Judicial District Court of Louisiana and Ex-Officio Recorder in and for the Parish and State; (3) Judgement of Divorse issued by Honorable Judge C. Wendell Manning, Fourth Judicial District Court, State of Louisiana, Parish of Ouachita; (4) photocopy of Divorce Law of the State of Louisiana; and (5) Certificate of Authentication dated 25 August 2017 issued by Melchor P. Finding the instant petition to be sufficient in form and substance, the same is hereby set for initial hearing before this Court on June 11, 2018 at 8:30 in the morning. GSIS opens scholarship for incoming college freshmen State pension fund Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) will accept applications for the enhanced GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP) for Academic Year 2018-2019 from April 16 to June 15.

“Out of 400 college scholarship slots for children or dependents of low-income GSIS members this year, at least 40 are allotted to dependents of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo or single parents. Since meeting their basic needs is already a struggle for a lot of our members, they need support in other vital expenses like defraying the cost of college education,” GSIS President and General Manager Jesus Clint Aranas explained.

“My twin brother and I have the same dream of becoming pilots since we were kids. The reason for this is all the airplanes we saw up-close whenever we accompany or fetch dad at the airport.

While waiting for dad and looking at those big planes, our mom would always tell us that someday we will be inside the cockpit of whichever airplane she’s pointing at,” said Ivan Kevin Satentes.

“Ever since I was a child it has always been my lifelong dream to become an airline pilot but my family is not financially capable of supporting my dreams,” shared his twin Ian John.

For Juan Carlo Wage, joining the program meant having the chance to improve the lives of his loved ones, especially his parents who both worked as caretakers and housecleaners in Pampanga.

“I joined the program because I knew that it would change my life.

Aside from being able to travel, and learn and experience new things, I want to pay my mom and dad back for their hard work, and give them a good life as well.”

The aspirants thanked Cebu Pacific for opening a program that would enable financiallychallenged Filipinos to fulfil their dreams of becoming pilots.

“I joined the program because I wanted to be a pilot since I was in grade school. After graduating college and getting my first job, I did not think that I would be able to pursue my dream immediately because my salary was not enough to put me to flying school.

Luckily, Cebu Pacific created a program for aspiring Pilots,” said Martha May De Leon, one of the two female cadets who made it in the first batch.

Daryl Dave Ditucalan of Iligan City ranked third in both board examinations for electronics technician and electronics & communications engineer, and was already employed as IC Designer but jumped at the opportunity offered by Cebu Pacific.

“After becoming close to my fellow cadets, I’ve learned that we all have something in common: the love for flying!” he shared. “Many of us have sacrificed our stable jobs and bright careers but we believe it will pay off in the long run. I agree that the pay is one of the reasons why we choose to pursue this, but it’s just

The cadet pilots will be spending 52 weeks at the FTA campus in Adelaide. After completing their training there, they will return to the Philippines to complete type-rating and licensing requirements to become commercial pilots. The program is open only to Filipino citizens who are college graduates, proficient in English and hold passports valid for at least two years prior to the start of the program. The screening process for applicants begins with an online screening, followed by an on-site screening for core skills and pilot aptitude tests, among other examinations where a fee of AU$425.00 (PHP17,000.00) will be charged. CEB and FTA will jointly select the final list of candidates.

Candidates for the second batch of CEB Cadet Pilots are currently being screened.

Application for the third batch is set to open by mid-May 2018.

Philippine Premiere of Ferrari 812 Superfast T

he Ferrari 812 Superfast officially made its debut in Philippines after a year from its International Premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2017.

The model opens a new chapter in Ferrari V12 engine history and marks the 70th anniversary since Ferrari released its first Cavallino Rampante sports car, the 125 S, in 1947. Ferrari remains to this day the only manufacturer to have continuously produced sports cars with 12-cylinder engines throughout that time.

This was the first time for the local launch to have two units available for viewing, both with different options, highlighting both sporty and elegant sides of the 812 Superfast. One unit in Rosso Corsa with classic Ferrari tan interior and the other one in Bianco Avus with Bordeaux interior, showing off the possible carbon fibre options and the level of personalization one can get on their unit.

The 812 Superfast, the vehicle that ushers in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, has been developed for clients demanding the most powerful and

exclusive Ferrari in the lineup: an all-round sports car that will deliver overwhelming driving pleasure both on road and track and not compromise on comfort whatever condition it may face.

“The challenge that Ferrari always faces in developing new models is to push the boundaries of its own achievement,” said Autostrada Chairman Wellington Soong.

“After intensive research and development, this is what they achieved with the 812 Superfast – the fastest and most powerful 12-cylinder engine in the 70-year history of Ferrari.”

Powered by a new 6.5-litre V12 engine that unleashes 800 cv, the 812 Superfast is the new benchmark in the front mid-engine sports car segment, achieving maximum power output at 8,500 rpm, which translates to a specific power output of 123 cv/l. These figures have never been delivered by any previous front mid-engine car and they ensure the kind of thrilling top-end performance that is the exclusive characteristic of Ferrari’s V12 raceproven heritage. The engine’s power is underscored by a full, rich exhaust sound that

exploits the acoustic clout delivered by its increased displacement.

The maximum torque is 718Nm@7,000 rpm, a significant 80% of which is already available at 3,500 rpm, improving both drivability and pick-up even at low revs.

The 812 Superfast is equipped with leadingedge control systems and components, resulting in unparalleled handling and roadholding. It

is the first Ferrari to adopt Electric Power Steering (EPS) with the aim of fully exploiting the potential of the car’s outstanding performance in accordance with Ferrari’s tradition.

The vehicle also sees the introduction of the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system (PCV), which combines electric front-wheel steering assistance with the mechanical concept built around

tyre dimensions and the rear-wheel steering.

These systems are integrated with the vehicle dynamics control system based on the latest 5.0 version of Side Slip Control (SSC), intended to improve the nimbleness of handling and reduce the vehicle response times.

Seamlessly integrating style and aerodynamic function to produce innovative technology and forms is the important

theme common to all Ferraris. The 812 Superfast has achieved this by two approaches: the multi-functional frontal section, which incorporates a cluster of aerodynamic solutions including active f laps at the front of the underbody, and the rear f lank which features an unprecedented aerodynamic bypass to increase downforce.
