lam dunk! Media Wise Communications/MUSE BOOKS has done it again, winning the Gold Anvil for PR Tools: Publications of the 53rd edition of the prestigious Anvil Awards held on March 23, 2018.

Media Wise’s latest Gold Anvil was awarded this time for its The Maestro of Philippine Basketball, a coffeetable book on Philippine basketball through the eyes of Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan, the country’s most-awarded coach.

Dubbed The Maestro, Dalupan is best remembered for stint as head coach of the Crispa Redmanizers .

During his 16-year Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) career (1975-1991), Dalupan’s record of 15 PBA titles

remained unbroken for 23 years (1990-2013) until Time Cone tied and eventually broke it with a record 16th PBA crown during the 2013 PBA Governors' Cup. Dalupan also held the record for the most number of UAAP men’s basketball championship titles (12) as coach of the University of the East Red Warriors.

The Anvil Awards are given annually by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) to the best public relations programs and individual practitioners of the year. This year was especially tough for the judges and entrants because of the record number of

contestants—450 in all, easily topping last year’s 404 submissions.

Xavier Ateneo Civil Eng’g students win Best Poster Award at Mindanao Regional Scientific Meeting Besting more than 300 participants from across Mindanao, a group of Civil Engineering students from Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan won the Best Poster Award at the 2018 Mindanao Regional Scientific Meeting, for

their paper titled “Raininduced Landslide Modeling of Carmen Hill, Cagayan de Oro City.”

Their study essentially showed that hundreds of residents are “potentially at risk to rain-induced landslides” around Carmen Hill, a part of Carmen, the most populated barangay in Cagayan de Oro City.

The student researchers used the Simplified Bishop Method to calculate the “Factor of Safety” against slides. LiDARbased Digital Elevation Models were then used to extract the topography of the study area. Soil samples were also taken from the field and subjected to “Triaxial Compression Laboratory Tests” to determine the geotechnical properties of the soil.

These parameters were then modeled in more than 50 cross sections using the “GeoStudio Software” to simulate the behavior of the slopes under given poster/PAGE 7

JESUS for All Nations Centro celebrated its second anniversary March 18 at Deluxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City.

The senior pastor of the church is Rev. Alexander Gadian with his wife Ann Marie as pastor.

During the event, the speaker was Bishop Herbert Gadian, the founding president of Jesus for All Nations Network International, which has already 170 chapter churches under its fold.

Mayor Oscar Moreno likewise gave a congratulatory

message.

The church started in March 2016.

“This church lifts up Jesus Christ as the Savior and the only hope for humanity,” Gadian said. “Our church mission is preaching the gospel and making disciples of the Lord Jesus and since it is still our first year, we focus more on discipleship class, trainings and Bible studies.”

Their Sunday service is at Dynasty Court Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

SSS seeks public assistance to track down delinquent security agency owner The Social Security System (SSS) has asked the public for any information on the whereabouts of Noel J. Hulip, owner and manager of Sky Man Security Agency (SMSA), who was convicted for not remitting the SSS contributions of his employees.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said that SMSA's last known address was at R. 201 Augusto Bldg., 478 Rizal Ave., Caloocan City. The Regional Trial Court of Quezon City Branch 98 issued a warrant of arrest against Hulip after he did not attend the court hearing on March 26, 2017.

“We are asking for the assistance of Hulip's former employees and the public to inform us of his whereabouts. We will be coordinating closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that Hulip will be arrested,” said Dooc.

In its decision, the court sentenced Hulip to a jail term of six years and one day, and ordered him to payP20,000 in fine and P75,713.79 in unremitted contributions from February 2013 to July 2014 plus the total

amount of penalties computed at three percent per month as of February 28, 2015 until fully paid.

“Non-remittance of monthly contributions is a punishable act under the law. Beginning on the first day of work of their employees, employers should already report them to SSS and pay their monthly contributions,” said Dooc.

Based on SSS' investigation, Hulip did not pay the contributions of more than 10 of his employees. A billing letter was issued to Hulip but he failed to comply, which led to the issuance of a demand letter as a final warning from the pension fund.

In both letters, Hulip was given 15 days to respond and comply with his obligations to SSS. “Hulip was given several chances to settle his delinquencies but he still chose to evade his responsibilities with SSS. His act is against the law and it deprives his employees of their benefits,” said Dooc.

Dooc also assured SMSA's former employees that SSS is doing everything it can to locate and arrest Hulip, to make him pay what 's due to them.

SWU PHINMA Unveils New Main Building

Southwestern University PHINMA (SWU PHINMA) inaugurated its main building last March 20, PHINMA Hall, as part of a five-year development plan laid out by PHINMA Education and University President Dr. Chito Salazar.

“In line with PHINMA Education’s mission of ‘Making Lives Better Through Education’ we are making sure that we

have an environment and facilities to be able to serve the students better,” said Dr. Salazar.

That environment includes the Southwestern Town project, which seeks to integrate SWU PHINMA into the local community through various interventions.

PHINMA Hall will house administrative offices, the University library, several laboratories, and the

School of Medicine.

Also under renovation is Sacred Heart Hospital (SHH), which will be the training hospital for SWU PHINMA's health and allied health sciences programs.

With a heart, allow me to share my thoughts as I assume the leadership of the oldest, and one of the most vibrant press clubs in the country today.

For the record, COPC was organized in 1951, while the National Press Club in Manila was established in 1952. COPC is therefore one year older than the NPC. COPC is now 67 years old.

COPC has once again reaffirmed its bold spirit that has triumphed over the years in the exercise of its noble mission—that of upholding press freedom as purveyor of truth, justice and peace in this era of change.

The road for all of us, press club members, and the rest of the media community is rocky and bumpy, yet fulfilling as it were.

Exhausted, yet at the end of the day, we still find ourselves humbled as members of the Fourth Estate.

Our journey is indeed one hell of a ride, but heaven on the inside.

Our day is always long and weary, but we have picked ourselves up, we have waged war way back, and we know pretty well, deep in our hearts, that we have done something good – and that is to inform, educate, motivate and empower the general public.

We have pounded the pavement and picked up the pieces that made our voices heard in all corners -- far and wide.

We have battled fiercely in the exercise of our noble task, because we cherished to be free at all times, any time.

We acknowledged the awesome dynamics of COPC politics -- small, yet silly. It provided plenty of fodder to tell not only for the cynics but for all of us to mirror and ponder with -- that COPC politics is nothing more than a contest of egos or the domain of special interests.

But that is what press club politics can be. That is why election matters. It is not small, it is big. It is important. Democracy can be noisy and messy and complicated yet astoundingly enigmatic.

We have our own opinions. Each of us has deeply

held beliefs. And as we hotline go through tough times, we make decisions that stirs passion, sparks controversy.

These arguments are mark of our liberty, our freedom of speech. Despite all our differences, most of us share the same ruffy magbanua aspirations – a free society where freedom of the press is highly regarded and respected.

Our press club is moving forward with confidence beyond this time of uncertainty --to help shape lasting peace and justice to all by upholding the truth built on the promise of freedom, dignity and respect for all of us.

We believe in free speech, we see life beyond with so much expectations because we have a noble task to fulfill.

That is where we need to go – moving forward with great optimism. We disagree, sometimes fiercely, about how to get there. It will not be always a straight line.

It will not be always a smooth ride. But one thing is surefire – we will make a difference.

At this juncture, I want to thank everyone who participated in the February 10 annual general assembly and election of officers. We have valued the occasion with utmost deliverance and respect.

In the days ahead, we look forward to sitting down along with the new members of the board and find ways where we can work together to move the press club forward with great enthusiasm.

No matter what we do or where we go from here, we will carry the legacy of our senior colleagues that made us stick together – through thick and thin, through good times and bad times. journey/PAGE 6

ANILA – In celebration of their 10th Anniversary, MyPhone, the first and leading Filipino mobile phone brand, in collaboration with Brown&Proud and Bbulletin, organized a two-day Tech Summit entitled HACK TO THE FUTURE 2018 last March 23 to 24, 2018 at the GREENSUN, Makati City.

It is poised to be “the most disruptive Tech Summit event” of the year, gathering speakers from the different branches of technology, focusing on the latest tech trends in Digital and Social Media, Technopreneurship, and Brand Innovation that aims to help Filipinos build a better Philippines in the Future. It featured various speakers, workshops, and exhibits that enriched everyone’s knowledge about technology today.

The First day of the Techsummit was attended by students

from STI and other schools. The second day brought together attendees from barangays, cooperatives, organizations, professionals, community members, and Government Agencies to deepen their understanding of all things digital and how technology can aide to shape our future.

Kevin Tan, Vice President of Myphone, did the opening speech.

Afterwards, David Lim, President and CEO of MyPhone and Brown&Proud, gave a talk about Brand Pilipinas. He was then followed by Atty. Elena Sen Lim, Chairman Emeritus of the Solid Group Inc. (SGI). SGI established global brands in the Philippines such as SONY, SAMSUNG, and KIA among others, and built Filipino Brands MyDestiny Cable and MyPhone.

of creating the most innovative products that can compete with the known global brands.

They also introduced “BARKO1000” by Brown&Proud, a project aiming to promote at least a thousand startups every year and help them reach the global market.

Joining the line-up of

speakers were ABS-CBN NoInk’s Digital Content and Marketing specialist Arbie Belmote, and bestselling Filipino Author of the socialserye book and movie “Vince and Kath” Queen Elly. Jhonathan Howard talked about Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and the role of A.I. play in shaping the future. A discussion and demonstration on “Robotics” by Warren Gonzaga and “Virtual Reality” by Christopher David of VR Philippines also excited the audience. Latest trends in technology such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, digital marketing, animation, and film making were covered in the “#hack” talk by Jay Pineda of Indigitous.

Simultaneously, there were workshops for film making, and a hackathon where students’ skills are pushed to the limit

to create the best of the best, by using the most advanced technology on their fingertips.

Kristine Ricafort, Founder/CEO of Bbulletin officially closed Day 1 of the TechSummit, she discussed the concept of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) and how young people can hack their mind code to a successful future.

The topic of Digital Marketing and how to harness the power of Digital to benefit to the Community were discussed on the second day of the event.

For the long term, I am now appointing Past President Msgr Elmer Abacahin who will sit in the board as ex-officio, to chair the new building committee to continue his plan to search for possible partner to replace the old building to a new modern one.

There is another long term project that until now, it remained a dream, or even considered a nightmare for now, and that is the mass housing for the club members.

The answer to this project is a whacking challenge to all of us – officers and members of the club. As a starter, I am now appointing Director Nicole Managbanag to chair this special committee on housing.

Lastly, I would like to humbly request the good governor, Gov. Bambi to partner with us in securing the Press Freedom Monument located inside the provincial capitol compound.

The symbol of press freedom, the monument is a victim of utter neglect and cannibalized for the longest time by aimless, shameless, faceless people.

I know the good governor can work with us to re-beautify and further protect the monument by repainting and putting up permanent fence made up of steel bars around the monument.

We will open the gate to the public only if there are events to be held in the area.

Ramoncito Ocampo Cruz began his first eight years of education at Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan in 1959 (Grade School, 1967). He moved to St. Andrew’s School in Parañaque City (High School, 1971) and the University of Santo Tomas (Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in painting, 1976).

A visual artist, advertising and publishing professional, Monching (as he is known to friends), is a multi-awarded publisher and artist. He established his own graphic design and publishing company, Media Wise Communications, Inc. in 1993. He won his first Catholic Mass Media citation as well as a Philippine Quill award for publishing MUSE, a magazine dedicated to art, culture and travel.

He has had three solo art exhibits.

A proud product of XU Grade School, Monching also gained acclaim for his publication of the Ateneo de Manila University’s sesquicentennial coffee table book, 150: The Ateneo Way by Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, SJ (2009); and

Future rainfall scenarios from downscaled climate change projections were also simulated in the models. Maps were then generated using the ArcGIS software.

Results showed that under the January 2009 rainfall event, the models indicated that portions of Carmen Hill could slide, which were validated by historical records.

The location where the models indicated “failure” also matched the location of actual slides that occurred.

Following the objective of their study — to develop high-resolution slope stability maps against rain-induced landslides on Carmen Hill — the results of their study were put in maps to indicate the near-exact locations and presented to the local government and residents to help them assess the risk and plan for mitigation and preparedness strategies.

In addition, based on the models developed in their study, the onset of

climate change may also exacerbate the potential impacts of landslides in the area.

This suggests that for urban development to be truly resilient and sustainable, it is now imperative for climateenhanced and risksensitive land use plans to be instituted and implemented.

On the slopes and foot of Carmen Hill also lie hundreds of formal and informal settlements, and this rapid development in the area is challenged by risks to landslides, especially during heavy rainfall events.

In January 2009 and January 2017, portions of Carmen Hill collapsed, causing property damage and transport paralysis.

The Civil Engineering department of the College of Engineering congratulated the winning team and considers this achievement a part of advancing their research excellence towards crafting engineering solutions to societal challenges.

Isuzu Philippines unveils the all-new RZ4E Blue Power engine

I

suzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) introduced another first in diesel engine technology through the recent launch of its allnew RZ4E Blue Power engine.

“The global trend of producing smaller capacity engine that has an output of larger engines has come to Isuzu,” said IPC President Hajime Koso.

“The new RZ4E Blue Power engine, carries with it our years of experience as a diesel engine manufacturer.

Carefully developed to provide optimized power and torque; this engine performs efficiently, with much care for the environment, running with less noise & vibrations, and is very easy to maintain,” he added.

Totaling four years of test and development, the Isuzu RZ4E engine has a displacement of 1,898-liters, capable of

producing, maximum power of 150 PS at 3,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 N-m from 1,800-2600 rpm – and is EURO 4 compliant.

New technological features include, a well-design combustion system, composed of a Diamond Like Coated (DLC) pistons pins, coupled with a clothoid curve combustion chamber, new fracture split design connecting rod and DLC fuel injector needles – which are all put together to decrease engine friction thus promoting improved fuel economy and lesser exhaust emissions.

Aside from the combustion system, the RZ4E also has a new water-cooled Variable Geometry Turbo-charger system, that ensures that the engine has excellent throttle response even at low rpm. The turbocharger’s turbine is made from high temperature resistant material while

the central body is water cooled for durability.

For ease of maintenance, the new RZ4E engine has a Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjuster (HVLA) which keeps the correct valve lash clearance, a Single Engine Accessory Drivebelt for the alternator and air-conditioning compressor and a Cartridge-type Oil Filter - which is another one of its ecological feature, that eliminates discarding of the metal canister by replacing only the paper element of the filter.

The Isuzu mu-X RZ4E LS-A MT records 37.27 km/l which is up to 14.32% improvement from the 2.5-liter variant (32.60 km/l), while the Isuzu mu-X RZ4E LS-A AT logs a total of 35.80 km/l that is up to 48.36% higher than the 2.5-liter variant (24.13 km/l).

The test is conducted under the supervision and verification of the Automobile

Association Philippine (AAP) following the Department of Energy (DOE) testing parameters and standards. “Our 2.5-liter engine as it is, is already fuel efficient, but with the introduction of the new Isuzu RZ4E engine, our Isuzu mu-X
