Lifecasting – creating replicas one Filipino child at a time Story by MARK FRANCISCO

LIFECASTING is the process of creating a three-dimensional copy of a living human body through the use of molding and casting techniques. The most common lifecasts are of torsos and it’s exactly what Althea Lorenzo does.

Despite her rare esteemed status as probably the only lifecasting artist in the country, Lorenzo firmly keeps her feet on the ground. In fact, the 30-year-old lady

from Davao City has a day job as a quality assurance manager in a pharmaceutical firm and only does her craft during weekends.

Nevertheless, her clients come as far as Cagayan de Oro and Cebu.

Lorenzo visits Cagayan de Oro City at least twice each year. It was on the weekend of April 9 that I made sure that I get to interview her during the rare moments that she is in this town. lifecasting/PAGE 11

For the last seventeen (17) years since 2007, the Shrine has been visited and flocked by domestic and local tourists, devotees from all over Mindanao, Luzon and Visayas day in and day out especially during Lenten Season and Holy Week and every 12TH day of December wherein Her Feast Day is celebrated by all her devotees all over the world.

The amazing place can be reached by the devotees by crossing and traversing the same river source nine (9) times before you see the beautiful view of the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Devotees have to cross the first river bank along Tablon River and Agusan River upstream the Balubal River tributaries and reach the first Station

of the Cross. Along the trail you can see flora and fauna, the white rocks, the mountains, the meadows, the trees and of course the cold water of the River.

Each embankment is a Station of the Cross for the devotees to make their Way of the Cross uphill till they reach the Igbalalay Hills where the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe is majestically situated.

April 13-Holy Thursday, it is expected that hundreds and hundreds of devotees will traverse the same river source nine (9) times and make the Way of the Cross-mostly devotees will stay overnight for prayers and meditation.

avier University - Ateneo de Cagayan challenged the inaugural batch of graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Cultural Education (GDCE) in Northern Mindanao to boost the promotion of Filipino culture and the arts and our national imagination through teaching and research.

“Gathering cultural workers and cultural scholars is not easy,” said Hobart Savior, director of Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA), the host institution of GDCE in Cagayan de Oro City.

“We hope that this scholarship will enable us to continue and further our studies on Mindanao’s culture and the Philippine culture at large so we will be able to promote among our young ones the appreciation of our culture and at the same time, protect it. This is our biggest responsibility,” Savior told the graduates during their graduation in March.

Teleperformance wins PEZA Outstanding Employer and Community Project of the Year awards

Users will be directed to Facebook’s help centre where they can get detailed advice. Facebook is launching an educational tool as part of measures it is taking to counter fake news.

For three days, an ad will appear at the top of users’ news feeds linking to advice on “how to spot fake news” and report it. The campaign, which will be promoted in 14 countries, is “designed to help people become more discerning readers”, the social media firm said. These countries are Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Myanmar (Burma), Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina,United States, and Canada.

Bu, t experts questioned whether the measure would have any real impact. “Until Facebook stops rewarding the architects of fake news with huge traffic, this problem will just get worse,” Tom Felle, a lecturer in digital journalism at City University told the BBC. Starting today Friday, April 7, 2017, users who click on Facebook’s ads will be redirected to its help centre, where they will see a list of 10 tips for identifying false stories.

These include looking at an article’s URL, investigating the source of a story and thinking more critically about whether an article is a joke. It also recommends being “sceptical of headlines”, as false news stories “often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation points”.

Facebook’s new guide is a useful primer on the basic principles of good journalism. If all the millions who will see it popping up in their feeds read and digest it, maybe it will have an effect.

But it will only be there for three days and one has to suspect that it will be read in the main by people

who are already suitably H ave M y Say sceptical about hoaxes and propaganda. So I’m not convinced that this will be seen as a game changer in the battle to make Facebook a place you go to find the truth, rather than wallow in your friends’ prejudices.

Indeed, in my opinion, Facebook should go further. One of the biggest problems with fake news is that the algorithms that run social media sites like Facebook and search engines such as Google are being gamed by black ops companies.

Facebook has been under pressure to combat fake news on its platform after claims it was used to sway voters during the US presidential campaign.

Examples include a story that falsely claimed President Obama had banned the pledge of allegiance in US schools, and another fake news item, saying former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was part of a paedophile ring. GSIS opens college scholarship program The Government Ser vice Insurance System (GSIS) is currently accepting applications for its enhanced GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP) for Academic Year 2017-2018.

The deadline for submission of application is June 9, 2017.

This year, GSIS is offering a total of 40 0 scholarship slots to children or dependents of active members and permanent total disability (PTD) pensioners with the lowest annual basic salar y. Of the 40 0 slots, 40 or 10 percent are allotted for dependents of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo or single parents.

Active members may nominate their children or dependents if they are permanent government employees, have at least threeyear government ser vice, have a salar y grade of 24 or below (or its equivalent job level), and have paid premium contributions for the last six months.

PTD pensioners who are below 60 years old are eligible to nominate their children as scholars .

Active members or disability pensioners may nominate scholars

if they are college students in any year level in schools accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as Levels IV and III. Active members who are single or married may nominate one child or dependent, while PTD pensioners may nominate their children only.

GSP scholars are entitled to the actual cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees not to exceed P40,0 0 0 per academic year and a monthly allowance of Php3,0 0 0.

Monetar y incentives in the amount of Php20,0 0 0, Php30,0 0 0, and Php50,0 0 0 also await scholars who will graduate with Latin honors cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude, respectively.

Alsons restocks Sarangani Bay with milkfish hatchlings April 17-20, 2017

Tungpalan says the fish seeding is done twice a year to help ensure an abundant population of milkfish fr y in Sarangani Bay. Alsons Aquaculture Corporation is the countr y’s largest fully-integrated producer and processor of milkfish under the Sarangani Bay trademark-

providing more than half the national requirement for prime milkfish.

The 105,0 0 0 milkfish fr y were released from the SEC jetty site, underscoring the power company’s commitment to uphold environmentallysound practices in the conduct of its operations with its 210 -megawatt baseload plant located in Maasim, Sarangani.

The fish seeding was only one of several activities that marked the ceremonial switchon for the first 105 -megawatt section of the baseload plant hat started operating in April

last year, and the start of civil works for the second 105 -megawatt section of the plant.

Digital transformation In 2016, Smart and parent company PLDT launched a $1-billion digital transformation program to enable their fixed and mobile

TESDA sets onsite assessment for OFWs The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) said that it will give an on-site assessment to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are bound for the Middle East.

TESDA Director General Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said that the Onsite Assessment Program (OAP) aims to find out if the OFWs possess the competencies required in a preferred work.

Mamondiong said that a delegation from TESDA will go to the Middle East to conduct the onsite assessment in coordination with the Philippine Overseas

Labor Offices (POLO).

The TESDA onsite assessment is scheduled at Comsofil in Riyadh; POLO, Dubai; ICSA, Kuwait City and Total Care International in Jeddah.

OFWs who are interested in the onsite assessment may visit the POLO in the scheduled areas. Jeddah and Dubai have already submitted a list of assessment candidates, Mamondiong said.

Workers may take the assessment in the following qualifications: Technical Drafting NC II; Visual Graphics Design NC II and Computer Systems Servicing NC II for Riyadh. In Dubai,

Technical Drafting NC II, Visual Graphics Design NC III, Massage Therapy NC II and Caregiving NC II. In Kuwait, included in the qualification of assessment are Technical Drafting NC II, Visual Graphics Design NC III and Computer Systems Servicing NC II. In Jeddah, Massage Therapy NC II and Caregiving NC II. “The program seeks to support the goal of bringing the Filipino overseas workers out of low skilled, low paying and oppressive service work, and assist them to land in higher skilled, better paying and decent work,” said Mamondiong.

SSS supports timely passage of holistic tax reform package

The Social Security System has expressed its support for the holistic and timely passage of the tax reform proposal of the Department of Finance (DOF) which mainly aims for a simpler, fairer and more efficient tax system in the country that will benefit largely the poor and middle-income earners.

Star, Inc. and 7-Eleven to introduce e-commerce business model

Technology company Star Telecom Alliance Resources Inc. (STAR, Inc.), makers of Filipino mobile phone

brand Starmobile, has forged a partnership with convenience store chain 7-Eleven to introduce an innovative e-commerce

business model that aims to make online shopping easier for consumers nationwide.

This partnership will allow customers to order PLAY Lite and PLAY Five through 7-Eleven’s multichannel CLIQQ store, found on Google Play and the Apple App Store, as well as electronic kiosks and catalogs instores.

Once they have confirmed their orders, they can pick-up their orders the following day.

Customers can opt to pay for them digitally through any of CLIQQ’s platforms or in-person through 7-Eleven counters, before or after they pick-up their chosen phones, using cash or credit card.

“This e-commerce model that gives customers a variety of flexible discovery, payment, and pick-up

options first rolled out in 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan. It has proven so successful that 35% of all e-commerce packages in the country now go through 7-Eleven branches, eventually helping make Taiwan the world’s most developed e-commerce market, with 18% share of total retail,” said Dan Marogy of 7-Eleven Philippines.

“We aim to pilot this program together with Starmobile in selected Metro Manila stores starting April 24.”

SSS warns public of fake checks

The Social Security System (SSS) warned its members and the public of a possible spread of fake checks after the pension fund was informed that a grocery store received as payment a fake SSS check.

SSS Senior Vice President for Luzon Operations Group Josie G. Magana said that the fake SSS check amounting to P20,000 was used to pay groceries at Catanduanes Supermart of Virac Catanduanes by a certain Gina S. Henzon.

“According to Precious Sorra, Secretary of the supermart, they accepted the check after verifying the voter's ID of the buyer which looked valid.

However, upon deposit of the check with their bank, they were informed that it was spurious,” said Magana.

Sorra immediately went to SSS Virac to report the fake check. Afterwhich, SSS Virac Branch Head Divina T. Avila instructed Edgar S. Rubio, Officer-In-Charge for Admin Section to check the name and SS number of Henzon. However, the SS number was invalid and such name is not registered

in the SSS database.

“Aside from nonexisting name and invalid SS number, the signatories in the check who were employees of SSS Urdaneta were also forged.

Authorized signatories of SSS checks are not rankand-file employees,” said Magana.

Avila later on instructed Jerald F. Competente, Verifier of SSS Virac to make a follow-up investigation at Barangay Palta Small in Virac which was the address indicated in the check. Based on the investigation, people in the area do not know Henzon and is not a resident of the said barangay.

“We advise the public, especially establishments, that before they accept checks as payment, kindly call SSS first to verify its authenticity. Also, valid SSS checks are attached to a voucher indicating the information about the payee as well as payment details from SSS,” said Magana.
