Mapawa Trail Series 2017 to kick off May By MARK FRANCISCO Lifestyle Editor
T
HE first ever Mapawa Trail Series will kick off this May 28 with Trail Run Mapawa 2017. Trail Run Mapawa 2017 is 21k and 5k event which will be held –along with the three other subsequent races in the series – within the 1,200 hectares of Mapawa Nature Park in barangay Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City. The May 28 event will be triggered with the 21k run at 5:30 a.m. and the 5k run at 6:00 a.m. According to the organizers, 60 percent of the participants were joiners of past Mapawa Trail Run events. They will all vie to finish all three of the runs in the series – the Mapawa Trail Marathon on August 13 and the Ultra Trail Mapawa on October 29. Locally, the global CSR movement included free computer training at Punta Elementary School, special day treat for the children with special needs at the SPED Center and to the elderly at Bahay ni Maria in Laguna. According to site CSR Lead Rosalyn Fuentes, their initiatives encompassed a monthlong series of activities involving government and social groups. “We were very much invested in creating awareness on being responsible, compassionate and conscientious citizens.”
In Paranaque, hospital walls were painted, livelihood seminars conducted, and a feeding and hygiene program were held at the Our Lady of Peace Hospital and Sarneli Foundation. “Our focus was to create a holistic experience for our beneficiaries – from physical fixtures to imparting practical knowledge that can help them in their dayto-day, and of course having an enjoyable time with them,” recounts CSR Champion, Laura Matienzo. Other than organizing classroom repairs, school cleanups, and medical missions, employees in Dumaguete also conducted shoreline cleanups and enjoined mountaineers in a tree-planting climb at Mt. biodiversity, Talinis is the second highest mountain in the Negros region and is popular to visitors for its natural beauty and volcanic lakes. “Dumaguete is an emerging cosmopolitan and we wanted also to contribute to the peripheral industries that CSR undertakings can help boost like eco-tourism,” explained Rosejo Dy, CSR lead for SPi Global Dumaguete. Offshore, sports activities with the elderly and a marathon against child abuse were some highlights in India, while volunteers in China taught Chinese culture to incoming tourists. US employees collected books for disadvantaged children, and participants in Vietnam and Nicaragua
donated school supplies and conducted fun activities with children beneficiaries. Since 2012, the company has been performing their CSR Day in all its offices globally – a continuing program that promotes the spirit of volunteerism, and, most importantly, make a difference in youth welfare and education. To date, it has generated a total of 245,424.23 volunteer hours, improving the lives of 69,106 beneficiaries in different parts of the world. Supporting sustainable initiatives that impact the lives of children in the grassroots and other marginalized groups, SPi Global’s CSR Day has been 100% employee defined and
initiated – from projects appraisal, fundraising and out-reach to various societal touch-points. “We have more than 12,000 employees but the only way we can make a difference is by doing it together”, stated Celeste Ilagan, SVP for Marketing and External Affairs. “At the end of the day, it’s about consciously putting our time, energies and effort that we know we are contributing to society. DISPLAY OF FAITH Trust or reliance? What means faith for you? To say it clearly: without faith we are really nothing. Faith is belief; believe in us, beliefs in our works, talents and personalities. We also should believe in our parents or better, in the whole family including the black sheep, who can be found every where. We should also believe in our friends, even sometimes it seems to become a very difficult task. A friend? A real friend? An expatriate friend...? Without faith, we will be reaching the rock bottom. Please don’t say, it’s a likely story. The German poet Johann Christian Friedrich von Schiller (17591815) mentioned in his drama “Maria Stuart”: “Even the word might be dead, but faith keeps it alive.” Yes, I can live with this. Faith and hope belongs together. In his book “Through the Valley of the Kwai”, Scottish officer Ernest Gordon wrote of his years as a prisoner of World War II. The 6’2’’ man suffered from malaria, diphteria, typhoid, beriberi and jungle ulcers. Many circumstances quickly plunged his weight to less than 100 pounds. Lying in the dirt of the death house, he waited to die. But every day, a fellow prisoner came to wash his wounds and to encourage him to eat parts of his own rations. As this fellow prisoner nursed Ernest back to health,

GSIS declares loan moratorium to Nina-hit members, pensioners in Albay To assist the victims of typhoon Nina in their economic recovery and give them relief in paying loans, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) granted a loan moratorium for its members and pensioners in Albay from March to August 2017. “Suspending the payment of loan amortization will enable our members and pensioners to prioritize more urgent financial needs as they recover from Nina’s devastating effects,” said GSIS Officerin-Charge Nora Malubay-Saludares. All active members and pensioners who are working or residing in the area with up-to-date loan payments as of January 3, 2017 and with loans granted or renewed on or before February 2, 2017 are automatically qualified for the moratorium. GSIS loans covered by the moratorium are Consolidated Loan, Enhanced Salary Loan, Policy Loan,

The service loan redemption insurance and fire insurance will continue to be in force throughout the moratorium period, provided premiums due are paid monthly. Resumption of loan payment will be reflected in the September 2017 billing statement for remittance not later than October 10, 2017.
