Camiguin, home to Hawksbill Sea Turtles de Oro

Jorie C. Valcorza MAMBAJAO, CAMIGUIN -- The island’s pristine waters is a come-on not only to tourists but to the sea turtles as well.

The undisturbed beaches of Barangay Baylao and Kuguita in Mambajao town are now the new found haven of the hawksbill sea turtles, distinguished of its sharp, curving beak and saw-like appearance in the shell margins.

While this turtle lives part of its life in the open ocean, it spends more time in shallow lagoons and corals, a vulnerability that pushes the local government, to affect a strong conservation program on the critical habitat.

In February 15, the local executives have released the first batch of new hatchlings to the sea in the shoreline of Baylao, witnessed by the residents, school teachers, barangay officials, police officers, and fish wardens.

Some 63 turtles were released; part of the event was also a tree planting activity near the shore.

To date, the local government is drumming up its campaign to educate the locals and become active partners in preserving the specie, often traded by fisherfolks for decorative purposes.

Meanwhile, another awesome option for those who wanted to see and swim with the turtles is the protected marine sanctuary in Mantigue Island (part of Mahinog town), where turtles playfully swim with the people around.

HE Philippine Basketball Associations’s (PBA) oldest and winningest franchise is carrying the iconic brand once more as they step into the hard court during the start of the Commissioner’s Cup this week.

In a courtesy call to San Miguel Brewery Inc. President Roberto N. Huang recently, the Biboy Ravanesmentored beermen were challenged to work and play hard. Huang echoed Mr. Ang’s mandate for them to stay true to the San Miguel brand that is synonymous to brewing excellence.

Huang gave each of the players and coaching staff San Miguel Pale Pilsen Bilib Cans, citing his confidence that each of them will work hard for the team that would carry the “Samahang Walang Katulad” equity, win or lose.

San Miguel Pale Pilsen’s Bilib campaign is a unique project to celebrate everyday successes, admiration and to uplift the sense of pride of anyone giving or receiving the special beer in can with a writeable space. Huang specifically cited the Beermen’s top center and the recent conference’s Best Player June Mar Fajardo.

Huang wished Fajardo goodluck as he will soon start training with the National Team for the

ireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) achieved back-to-back wins in two prestigious awards programs in Barcelona, getting recognition both for its quick network restoration and emergency response efforts in the aftermath of Supertyphoon Yolanda and for its revolutionary mobile Internet platform SmartNet. SafePH – Smart’s disaster preparedness and emergency response program which was put to the test when Yolanda devastated Central Philippines last November – was named “Best Use of Mobile for Emergency or Humanitarian Efforts” at the GSMA Global Mobile Awards 2014, which is dubbed the Oscars of the mobile industry.

Meanwhile, SmartNet won the “Operator OTT Service Launch Award” award at the inaugural Telecoms.com Awards.

‘Commendable on many levels’ In comments posted at the GSMA Global Mobile

Awards website, judges said SafePH was commendable “on many levels: preparedness, partnerships, and the rolling out of a whole portfolio of services aimed at improving communications access for the affected community in a rapid response fashion.”

Even before Yolanda made landfall, some local government units using Smart’s Infoboard web-based solution were sending text blasts to prepare residents for the incoming typhoon. Smart also prepositioned its personnel, equipment, and relief goods in major areas in Central Philippines for faster response.

The day after Yolanda hit the country, Smart was first on the ground to set up free call stations using satellite phones, which allowed survivors to communicate their needs to the outside world. In partnership with Telecoms Sans Frontieres, Smart provided emergency satellite communications ser vices in Tacloban City.

In partnership with Thuraya Telecoms, Smart was able to

offer mobile satellite services on a larger scale.

Satellite communications enabled various agencies to coordinate disaster response efforts and efficiently deploy resources to affected communities.

Within a week after the disaster, Smart engineers helped integrate the Vodafone Foundation Instant Network to provide interim communications support to government and humanitarian a gencies to affected communities in Palo, Leyte and Guiuan and Borongan, Samar. These were the first mobile communications restored in these areas. ooks have the power to create change. They can tell stories to widen children’s imagination, they can embed good moral values and they can promote literacy and value for education.

On March 5, the Xavier Ecoville daycare center joined the whole world for the second time in celebrating the World Read Aloud Day 2014.

The Xavier Ecoville project staff members, volunteers and resident teacher Milagros Tayobong gathered the 3-4 year old pupils of the daycare center to start the activity with a prayer. This was followed by an action song to get the children in an excited mood for the storytelling activity.

Two stories with good moral values on care for the environment and love for others were read to the children that morning. These books were in the Filipino context, making it more familiar and interesting to the listeners. The children enjoyed looking at the pages of the big picture books used by storytellers Nadine Hendrikka Legaspi and Grace Gift Chua. Post-storytelling activities and brief processing sessions were done after every story. Therese Rhea Rose Baliwag stressed the good moral value told in each story by asking the children questions, creating an interactive environment.

The event closed with an art activity. To continue their amusement with words and pictures, the children were assisted by volunteers Dr. Mayette Rivera, Kaina Sitoy, Czarrise Patoltol and Tat Gualberto to an art activity. The pupils colored the official logo of the World Read Aloud day 2014. This celebration is an act to show the world that “Children have the right to read, to write and to share their words to change the world” (litworld.org) Xavier Ecoville is a resettlement community for TS Sendong survivors in Brgy. Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City. It is facilitated by Xavier University, the community members, the local government, donors and other partner for a self-sufficient and value-laden community.

Pinoy Food Festival this March in Seda Centrio’s Misto Seda Centrio’s Misto lobby dining restaurant is introducing a Filipino Food Festival for March.

“This is on top of our usual À la carte selection and Lokal Favorites Weekend Buffet,” said Hotel Manager Lorenzo Tang. “We will offer a buffet selection every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of each week from 6-10PM that will highlight the specialties of each region starting with Mindanao delicacies this week and moving on to the Visayas, Luzon and Pinoy Food in general in the following weeks.”

Mr. Tang said they want ZC Eatery’s iconic humba to cater great local food at a reasonable price and the midweek food festival will be available at only PhP 450 Nett per person.

But that ain’t all you’ll be getting for that.

“We will also be presenting in Al Fresco (poolside) from 7 to 8.30pm, a cultural dance in line with the current theme of the food festival,” Mr. Tang said.

Following the Filipino Food Festival for March, Seda Centrio will be flying in an Italian chef to Lechon-manok-Bisaya highlight traditional Italian Food from the second week of April to the first half of May. More details on that from this column so keep your eyes peeled!

Primavera Residences Invites You to Join the Earth Day Photography Contest

A

pril 22 is Earth Day, a day being celebrated worldwide to raise awareness to environmental issues and promote environmental action. This year, Primavera Residences, the premier green condominium building in Cagayan de Oro, celebrates the event through a photography contest for amateur photographers.

The contest called “LIVING GREEN IN A MODERN WORLD: An Earth Day Photography Contest” aims to draw attention to the eco-friendly and sustainable development advocacies of Italpinas, the developer of Primavera Residences.

Who can join the contest: • The contest is open to amateur photographers, photography students, and enthusiasts of all ages based in Northern Mindanao. Professional photographers (defined as individuals who receive compensation for his photographic work either as a one-person operation or through involvement in a studio outfit) are not eligible to enter this contest.

• Participants under 18 years of age require the permission of a parent or guardian.

How to join: • Each participant is allowed to submit a maximum of 3 entries.

• Entry is limited to original works that have not previously been displayed or exhibited and to which the entrant holds all applicable rights. Works that have won prizes in other contests or that have been submitted to other contests currently underway are not eligible.

• The submitted works must revolve around the theme and will showcase eco-friendly living and sustainable projects in the region.

• Images that have been retouched using digital software or by other means will be accepted. Both color and monochrome images will be accepted.

• Entries must be submitted on March 1 to April 22, 2014.

• After carefully reading the guidelines, participants may submit their entries in jpeg format through any of the following options: • Via walk-in at the Primavera Residences office in Pueblo de Oro Business Park, Cagayan de Oro. • Through the following email: crs@italpinas. com.

• By submitting a link from Facebook or Flickr.

• Submitted entries must include the following information: participant’s name, address, phone number, email address, and photo caption.

• Entries must have a resolution of 6 megapixels to be made available upon request.

• 10 Finalists will be announced in April 25, 2014 and will be open for public viewing in the gallery exhibit to be held at Primavera Residences and the Primavera booth in SM City.

Judging: • Images will be judged on relevance to the theme, originality, composition, overall impact and artistic merit.

• The team of judges will be composed of officials from Italpinas, members of the CDO press and bloggers community, and prominent Cagayan de Oro photographers.

• Preliminary judging of the online gallery will be done from April 25 to 30, 2014.

practice and public policy; develop professional, institutional, and community capacity; promote partnership between Filipinos and overseas environmental organizations, coordinating their efforts in wild nature protection; develop efficient mechanisms of fund-raising for nature conservation projects; serve as an education and training center for communities, wildlife officials and visitors to the center in order to increase awareness of and build capacity for conservation and environmental protection and management; and promote the sustainable use of natural resources while linking international to local environmental issues.

Among the center’s research agenda are thematic areas that are of global and regional importance, this includes: Climate Change and Biodiversity conservation, Taxonomic Studies on Terrestrial and Aquatic ecosystems, Biodiversity Conservation and Management, Wildlife enforcement, Ecotourism and Biodiversity conservation, Support to the Program of Work on Protected Areas, and Community Environmental Management.
