here is a film making harvest in the regions that forwards the stories, aspirations, voices and experiences that are richly layered with cultural identity, local lore, local color, truths, struggles and marginalization. These are captured through the lens of our regional film makers whose works are worthy of audience’s attention for awareness, understanding and solidarity – peace. This film making harvest also shows the distinct capacities and aspired outcomes of film making that challenge the mainstream and Manila centric type of commercial film making and independent film making. This harvest is CINEMA REHIYON 6, an annual noncompetition film festival for the regions. Cinema Rehiyon 6 is the flagship project of the National Committee on Cinema of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in celebration of the Philippine Arts Festival. It started in 2009 where film making Alternativo sense was the focus, so film making initiatives from Bacolod, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Ilo Ilo, Naga and Northern Mindanao. In 2010, the festival continued to garner serious attention from the film making community. The first and the second Cinema Rehiyon, held in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, brought confidence and pride to the regional film makers because they shared successfully their stories not only among themselves but also with the community. Films from the Other Philippines expanded as Cinema Rehiyon 3 entries were added with films from Bohol, Calabarzon, Pampanga, Pangasinan and Samar. In 2011, Cinema Rehiyon 3 was held in Davao City. This was the first time the festival was brought to the region as it is true to its concept of Forging Philippine Cinediversity. The Davao leg focused on looking at the films as specimens of understanding multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural facets (Co, 2011).
The CAGAYAN de ORO TIMES
Bacolod City was the venue for Cinema Rehiyon 4 which affirms and validates the sense of Empowering Regional Cinema. The festival was titled, Bacollywood. One good feature during Bacollywood was Cine de Bario which ‘brought cinema to public spaces and the showing of video art installation that featured works of video artists from different parts of the country.’ Just last year, Cinema Rehiyon 5 was held in Los Banos with the theme Nurturing Cinemas of Home. The festival was excellently managed and implemented with objectives set were met and audience development was commendable. In February of 2014, Cinema Rehiyon 6 complements the film making frontiers on socio-cultural responsibility. In accordance to the Philippine Arts Festival Theme, KASING – SINING Art on the Edge, Art with a Heart, Cinema Rehiyon 6 features film making frontiers that have themes that could give positive impact and transforms lives for the better. Films that will educate the community about disaster risk reduction and management, climate change, environmental protection and preservation, rebuilding lives and communities and cultural solidarity and understanding shall be programmed. CINETALAKAYAN- a Cinema Rehiyon 6 Forum programs topics on Film Making and Socio-Cultural Responsibilities, and CINEBARANGAY reaches the Sendong Survivors by screening inspirational films and animated films from the regions and by giving the communities multi-media forum on disaster risk management, climate change resiliency and mitigation. The silver lining
WORDS AND NOTES
by Janey Montebon Duterte
The Season of Giving
H
oliday season is finally over, and as you stash away the Christmas décor and try to transition back into reality, have you paused to think about the real meaning of the season that has just passed? Some of us might have gotten too caught up with the whirlwind shopping sprees, reunions, and vacations that forget to give back to the community and to the less fortunate a fraction of the blessings we received. Here are a few ways some people chose to spend their Christmas. 1. With a foundation or group that they feel deeply about. An example for this would be the recent Christmas Party conducted by Primavera Residences for the Calabrian Children’s Foundation. The Calabrian children are under the care of an Italian priest which is why it resonates deeply with Primavera Residences, an Italian condominium development in uptown CDO. 49 children with ages 5 to 16 were treated to a fun-filled morning last December 21. Parlor games, Christmas gifts (slippers, hygiene kits, and school supplies), and food all marked this meaningful giftgiving activity. The event also became a venue for the staff, agents, and brokers of Primavera Residences to bond and share the wonderful and joyous experience. As Primavera’s Sales Director Gladys Magadan puts it, “It was a very fulfilling activity, seeing the children having a great time especially this time of year, seeing them smiling at you, and very grateful with this small act of kindness. “ 2. By supporting a worthy cause. There are several organized groups here in
Cagayan de Oro who painstakingly make it their duty to help the less privileged. One of these is the Child Protection Brigade volunteers headed and founded by Mr. Renato Redoble Pepito, a very young former UNICEF volunteer during the Sendong aftermath. When the project ended, he continued serving the communities through conducting non-formal education intervention in different Sendong-hit areas including several relocation sites. Renato’s group of volunteers teach the communities’ children subjects such as Basic Math, Science, English, and also provide therapy such as Play Therapy, Music Therapy, Games, Art Therapy, Story Telling and Film viewing. 3. Giving to the ones who truly need it. Instead of giving gifts to friends, some people decided to make a contribution to a foundation on their friends’ behalf. This is a very good idea because a bottle of wine given to your colleague could already buy an entire meal for a typho0n-struck family in Visayas. 4. Forgetting company Christmas parties and donating the money to a foundation instead. Several big companies chose to go this route after typhoon Yolanda hit the country. Instead of spending for a lavish party, the money was given to those who need it more. What about you, how did you choose to honor the real meaning of Christmas? Remember, giving doesn’t end on Christmas day. It also doesn’t have to be a huge amount. All that matters is you give it heartily and with all sincerity. Have a prosperous New Year!

t feels sweating out after a long holiday ... exercise and body detox for the next Two weeks. After all the parties, late sleeps or no sleep because travel or just long movie marathons in your couch, let’s wake up and get our bodies ready for the work load of 2014. As we all know time flies very fast so let’s not waste time anymore and get up on our feet but before doing so I hope we have already done the essentials or might as well do this as we start the New Year. Here are some suggestions that you might want to consider. 1. De clutter from the inside out. Evaluate the things that you experienced the previous year. Keep the learning but discard the bad things. Do not dwell on it. Do not keep anger in your heart because you’re the only one who is going to suffer in the long run. Choose to forgive because you yourself are a recipient of His grace. 2. Detoxify. Get yourself a body detox, clean out your system physically. There’s a lot of ways on how to detoxify so choose one

that you can finish. I guess this is something that many of us neglect, that’s why we get sick so easily and I’m not an exception to it. Perhaps I have learned my lesson the previous year that’s why I’m detoxifying now. 3. Clean up your surroundings. Get rid of things that you don’t need any more. Return the stuff you borrowed because you forgot to return it. 4. Let Go. Do not carry the unnecessary baggage of 2013. Unless you let go, you can never truly move forward. 5. Do not make resolutions that you can’t keep. What’s the point of having one if you can’t keep it any way. Make simple easy way/ ways of change that you can cope up with to make a better you for the whole year round. These are just my essentials. You might have more so go ahead and do it so that you can surely have a fresh start this 2014.
I
f Christmas is about giving, sharing, and remembering the Birth of Christ, New Year on one hand, is celebrated, as a way of welcome for a better tomorrow and a thank you for the year past. It is a day wherein people, rich or poor, young or old, educated or not, join the rest of the world in welcoming a new year. This is made more memorable for those who wish for a better life, better love and better everything in their lives. In other words, it signals a new day full of hope and expectations. New Year, New beginnings. The occasion though, do not just call for celebrations, but, this must be balanced with caution: the choices of food placed on the table , quantity and frequency of actually ingesting them, not to forget the drinks that one must indulge in. And, the kind of firecrackers or fireworks that one may use to show one’s joy and excitement of greeting the coming year! One’s safety should be at the top of priority list that each one of us must consider, as participant or observer or bystander of the activities. The Department of Health, each year reminds us of its IWAS PAPUTOK campaign. A multitask force that is spearheaded
A Safer Welcome for 2014
by the DOH and participated in by the PNP, Department of Trade & Industry, the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Local Government Units, is active and serious in the implementation of its guidelines , whose ultimate goal is a ZERO CASUALTY. Since most of the casualties during this time of the year is from injuries secondary to firecrackers, the DTI, it being the lead agency in terms of licensing and registration, reminds each one of us, to look for the stickers of certification attached to the products whether it be Christmas lights or firecrackers. Doing so, would at least bring to a very low number the incidents that may happen like fire due to faulty lights or firecrackers that can bring more harm than fun. It is good to know that the Bureau of Fire and Protection is on standby 24/7, with their hotlines readily accessible should an emergency arise. All hospitals whether government or private are also on alert for any patients that may come in for treatment. Increasing awareness and educating the people on the proper way of buying, installing of lights, as well as the choices of firecrackers and the proper disposal are important data that the community should know.
Even, the location as to where these things can be sold, as well as where it can be used during the celebration are MUST KNOW’s for all. It is not the government’s task alone to ensure that keeping the celebrations safe for the people, but each one of us has a huge role to play. Prevention is everyone’s business... Which is why a group of dedicated and committed young men and women, chose to sign up and join an emergency medical services , RESCUE 411, pioneered and founded by husband and wife team, Dr Ferdinand and Ma Victoria Miranda. They offer free and voluntary services to our kababayans who need immediate transport to the hospitals for treatment. Should the victims require first aid, the group is capable of handling their basic health needs. RESCUE 411, similar to other emergency medical services, is 24/7 available, and is also on stand- by as 2014 draws very near. Lest we again forget, safety first before fun, is but a simple resolution that is easy to fulfil. Responsible celebrations and merriment is as much preventive in nature as a healthy lifestyle is to one’s totality in the dynamics of quality living. Happy New Year everyone!

MORESCO-1 backs AMRECO’s appeal to Pnoy: castoff Petilla’s resignation
5
A
s part of the thirty-three (33) Electric Cooperative members of the Association of M i n d a n a o Rural Electric Cooperative (AMRECO), MORESCO-1 strongly supports the Association’s stand on its appeal to keep Carlos Jericho Petilla as Secretary of Department of Energy (DOE). AMRECO’s official statement was released and forwarded to the National Electrification Administration (NEA), the Office of the President and DOE the following day after the news about Petilla’s resignation. Though, before it could reach the table of the President, news aired that Pnoy rejected Petilla’s resignation. It can be recalled that on November 19, Petilla vowed to the public that he would resign if power is not fully restored to the Typhoon Yolanda (International name: Haiyan) stricken areas by Christmas. For AMRECO’s president, Sergio Dagooc, the Electric Cooperative’s coordination with the Secretary through NEA has been positive, that they discovered their mutual commitment to uphold the Rural Electrification Program in the country. “As the leader of Mindanao Line Personnel sent by the AMRECO member EC’s totaling to one hundred seventy (170) linemen and more than forty (40) line crews and equipment forming the DOE-NEA-EC’s Task Force Kapatid in Leyte and Samar areas whose tasked is to rehabilitate the damaged lines and restore the power in the area, I am a living witness how the Honorable Secretary lead and inspired us to complete our tasks ahead of schedule as evidenced by the re-energization of Tacloban City and other towns way ahead of the target on December 24, 2013.” A switch on ceremony took place in December 18, 2013 at Palo, Leyte, which MORESCO-1 Board of Directors and Management Representatives attended to witness as well as turning over relief goods to the affected personnel of Leyte Electric Cooperative II; energizing of 317 out of 320 affected towns and restoring power in not more than 2 months instead of the originally projected six months. Thus, the Association leader reckons that the Secretary’s resignation is unacceptable due to the mere perception of failing to restore power to 3 towns in Eastern Samar that is actually due to a power line fault. “The distribution lines of the remaining three towns Mercedes, Salcedo and Guian which were reportedly un-energized in Eastern Samar as the reason of his reported resignation is actually already energized using a genset before it was connected to the grid upon energization of NGCP transmission line on December 24, 2013, but unfortunately there was a line fault during the testing and energization which was only found yesterday afternoon of December 25, after a continued line patrol since afternoon of December 24 within the 22 kilometer span of distribution line located in a cross country section. So technically speaking, the Honorable Secretary with the support of his team really able to fulfill his commitment,” Dagooc furthered. In the meantime, MORESCO-1, on December 26, 2013 celebrated the homecoming of the 25 Task Force Kapatid Yolanda linemen it has voluntarily sent to Visayas to restore power in its areas of assignments: Tacloban City, Leyte and Bantayan island, Cebu, who stayed and worked for more than a month to their assigned places. This was the day when AMRECO released it official statement of support to have Petilla stay as DOE Secretary. This was also the day when news broadcast Pnoy rejecting Petilla’s resignation. A time to have a good closure for the year 2013, and hope for a brighter 2014 especially to the victims of the typhoon and other catastrophic events that hit parts of the country this year.

The bill was filed by Cong Rodriguez because he sees the potential of Cagayan de Oro to be a hub for industrial, commercial and recreational centers which will not only promote the City but also increase its productivity and create more jobs for Kagay-anons. merthedreamer BY JOHN LAURENTE
Miserable over her financial inability to buy a Bavarian Crème Donut from a donut store, Mer was about to star in one of the most inspiring business stories this country’s ever heard. Growing up on farmlands somewhere in the mountains of Claveria, Misamis Oriental, Mer Sudaria is the youngest child of a farmer and a market vendor. Living in remote, rural areas, life has not been particularly kind to Mer and to her family. However, her in-born resilience allowed her to be self-reliant especially towards her scholastic needs. After walking for 40 minutes a day just to get to school, she would sometimes sell pineapples and “santols” to classmates or simply exchange them for paper. These harsh situations were daily scenarios for Mer but in spite of all this, she became a valedictorian in elementary, breezed through high school, and eventually finished college. When she finished school in 2006, amidst family crises and mixing studies with work, Mer decided to move to places with better opportunities. With only P2,500 and all the faith she could possibly acquire, she sailed for Cebu without a single secure job waiting for her. Settling for substandard living quarters in Cebu, she immediately applied for a job in a call center company after hearing about its high salaries and good benefits. She got her heart broken however after she realized that she could never afford the application processes, causing a derailment in her plans which eventually led her to take a job as an SM bagger. Bearing with the dismal salary, the overwhelming expenses and the inability to send some money back home, Mer attempted again and again to apply for better jobs. Finally, despite her lack in English skills, Convergys hired her as a customer representative where she, using that resilience and determination once again, worked her way to being the top customer service rep. What Mer had on her mind? Success was finally within her reach! But apparently the Heavens had other plans for her. It was an invitation to a business orientation by a former call center supervisor that would introduce Mer to the world of Network Marketing—an arena where she realized that there were bigger things she could get and higher heights she could reach. Inspired by the story of William Chavez, a network marketing legend, Mer joined UNO, the premiere networking company in the country, as a part time business builder and for the first few months, her network was steadily growing. However, Mer made a crucial mistake; little did she realize that she was operating her business with the mindset of an employee. She was later overcome with doubts and, like most new businessmen and businesswomen, her enthusiasm slowly died down.
The CAGAYAN de ORO TIMES
All this changed when she received a text message from Wylie Chavez, William’s older brother. He introduced himself as a businessman in the field of advertising, and offered to mentor her. Wylie emphasized the need for transforming her mindset from an employee’s to a businesswoman’s in order to achieve the results that she wanted. Though reluctant to accept, Mer eventually allowed Wylie to coach her. Slowly and steadily for the next few months, Coach Wylie assisted Mer’s gradual makeover, teaching her brand new concepts and ideas on financial literacy, speakership skills, and leadership abilities among others. This constant coaching progressively became one of the reasons why she would again rise up and become a well-respected leader in the industry. Fast forward a couple of years later and Mer’s already on the fast track, soaring high and mighty as an UNO millionaire and Top Earner! Cruising through highways and city streets in her brand new Hyundai Tucson, her network has already numbered in the thousands, spreading to six different cities in two major island groups with no signs of stopping! To top it all off, she has traveled to foreign countries such as Japan, Singapore and the United States—all paid for by the company! But if you ask her, the best rewards didn’t come from the money nor did it come from the fame. It came from helping other ordinary people, people very much like herself, people in need of change and people who also faced cruel situations. Mer has already reached a point in her business career where money and achievements no longer propel her actions. Her passion stems from her genuine desire to give back ten-fold what UNO has given her. She’s frequently giving training and coaching sessions, teaching new entrepreneurs around the country and where she goes, people flock to her to listen to her story. Looking back to the days where she had virtually nothing, Mer Sudaria is now living a life that’s free, a life that’s filled with faith and a life that’s worth emulating. Most of the time you can see her walking around carrying a box full of Bavarian Crème Donuts. Nothing is impossible for the heart that believes.
