Cinemagis films mirror social horrors M indanao conflict. Violence against women. Abduction. Incest. Religious prejudice. Unrequited love. Gut-churning cannibalism. These elements have converged, assembling the captivating menu of digital short films for the sixth year of Cinemagis festival under the auspices of Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA). “This year’s festival has curated films that have social relevance and impact,” said Hobart Savior, XCCA director. “They reflect on social biases, peace issues, self-awareness and climate change.” Since the establishment of Cinemagis in 2009, it has developed by leaps and numbers in terms of participating film makers and audience. Running on January 23-25 at the XU Little Theater and SM City Cinema 3, the event presents 5 professional entries, 8 student films, 3 special citation pictures and the critically acclaimed film, “Crossfire” by Arnel M. Mardoquio. Cinemagis serves as the springboard for short films coming from Northern Mindanao to compete in the 6th Cinema Rehiyon, the national film festival organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). The winners of Cinemagis will be featured in Cinema Rehiyon on February 18-22, to be hosted also by XCCA. Provocative plots From the professional category, each entry has dealt with intriguing yet morally-baffling themes, enough to spark reality checks on various social matters. Trauma and condemnation on the abuse of women unravel in the story of a battered wife, Estrella and how the exploitation has reshaped her definition of love and self-respect. “Estrella” is a film directed by Mark Gio Amoguis. Tat Soriano’s “Panamilit” takes the audience to a heart-wrenching story of letting go and moving on with a tinge of nostalgia and surrealism. CINEMAGIS

MyPhone to Invade Dinagyang Festival for the 2nd Time MyPhone, the pioneering Filipino mobile phone brand, with Panay News will set Plazoleta Gay grounds on fire for the second time as they invade the Dinagyang Festival on the nights of January 24 to 26. In 2013, MyPhone brought the very first MyPhone MyParty in Iloilo bringing in performers from the local music industry. The crowd went crazy over former
XLR8 members MM and MJ Magno and VIVA artist rap star Pio Balbuena. The Major 7 Brand and Daniel Zedane opened the program with their song numbers. What kept the crowds energy high, aside from the artists’ performances, were the phones that were given away as prizes and the shirts thrown away via slingshot. The crowd’s favorites MM
and MJ Magno, who performed during last year’s MyPhone MyParty, will be partying again with the Ilonggo crowd this year. The Magno twins will be with Kris Angelica dela Cruz, Sam Mangubat, and teen hearthrob Kyle Vergara. Expect another three nights of partying, games, performances, and give-aways from 8 P.M. until midnight.

‘Road to Cinema Rehiyon 6’ tours universities in NorthMin
B
efore this year’s Cinema Rehiyon festival unveils its newest roll of short films from all over the regions, different sets of audience in Northern Mindanao have been screening its past entries through “The Road to Cinema Rehiyon 6.” The roadshow, which started on January 10 and will end on February 13, serves as a teaser and an invitation for the film enthusiasts from Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan, Butuan and Bukidnon to the upcoming 6th Cinema Rehiyon, an annual national film harvest from the regions. Cinema Rehiyon is the flagship program of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCAA) in celebration of the National Arts Month in February. The festival is dubbed as a detour from the mainstream and ‘Manilacentric’ films. Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) is the host of this year’s Cinema Rehiyon, happening on Feb 18-22. “We believe that films, like any other forms of art, are essential media for learning and for liberal education,” said

The films presented in the Road to Cinema Rehiyon 6 are the winners of the Cinemagis Digital Short Film Festival in Northern Mindanao, the 2012 film by Maria Victoria “Bambi” Beltran, “Pigadagit” (Taken) and the critically acclaimed film, “Crossfire” by Arnel M. Mardoquio. These featured films reflect on the lives and the diverse culture of the people in Mindanao, including the social issues lingering in the region. The short films that won awards in Cinemagis were “Kasing-kasing Amang” (2009) and “Uray” (2011) by Shaun Alejandrae Yap Uy, “Kiss the Rain” (2009) by Tsaddi Esguerra, “Ukit” (2009) by Deo Charis Mostrales, “Sealed” (2010) by Glenn Mark Doromal, “Gahani” (2011) by Jenriel Pons A. Lagat, “Pan de Sal” (2011) by Ray Anthony Lao, “Supernico” (2012) by Reena Bianca S. Furthermore, the tour will continue at Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) on Feb 5, Capitol University on Feb 10, Bukidnon State University (BSU) on Feb 11, Liceo de Cagayan University (LdeCU) on Feb 12 and will culminate at SM City Cagayan de Oro on Feb 13. “The students from the various academic institutions shall be given exposures to regional films to inform and inspire them of the stories, voices and aspirations of the people from our own locality,” Savior said. Cinemagis and Cinema Rehiyon were both established in 2009 and they share some common interests such as nurturing the craft of regional filmmakers and challenging the young ones to get into this valuable form of art. Everyday Rain
G
etting up late these days due to cold weather, almost nothing to wear because doing laundry without the sun’s heat is useless you’ll just do it all over again right? I’m sure all of us Kagayanons can relate to this after a week of everyday rain. Schedules disrupted, travels cancelled, classes disturbed, event preparations delayed these are just some of the uncomfortable inconvenient circumstances we might got into this week but don’t you think we are still more blessed compared to those places who are experiencing severe snow? I’m guilty of making such complains this week until a good friend reminded me that God is sovereign. He knows what He is doing. Instead of complaining we ought to look at the bigger picture and we have a big

God who takes care of us even the seemingly little things in our lives. Yes my classes are disrupted this week which means my recital preparations are hampered but even with the less time I spent with my students I still chose to be productive by studying the basics of recording and mastering music since I’m doing such for a project. Having no class at a certain time still became a blessing in disguise because I finally got myself to study some recording essentials of which I have realized its importance after studying and applying it directly to some trial recordings. The choice to be productive with this bed weather is a challenge but when you have the deadlines to meet and responsibilities to fulfil then you will surely do it even if it means
screaming while taking a bath with cold water. Without realizing it, endurance and perseverance within us are developed. If you try to picture it out it may seem to be funny but these simple situations can really test our characters right? Even with this LPA becoming Agaton let us remain steadfast knowing that He is control but never the less let us be prepared for the possibilities. This is no longer our first time applying what we learned from previous calamities I think will be best.

Qualified graduating fourth year high school students from public schools in Cagayan de Oro City can avail themselves of this opportunity to apply for a college scholarship. “Hello” by Kevin Nico Surposa shows the acquaintance of good old friends and an uninvited follower— a mysterious lurker the protagonist has to face. “The film is about conquering our past,” said Surposa. Gray Em Erezo, whose past entry was screened during the 5th Cinema Rehiyon, joins this year’s Cinemagis with “Lugdang”. Erezo said his film was inspired by a girl he met at Divisoria last year. “She was like mentally drowned,” Erezo emphasized. “I used the word ‘drowned’ because she was drowned physically, mentally and emotionally. She could not even talk. She lost her family during the f lash f lood brought about by [Typhoon] Sendong.” A short film that reaped a rundown of nominations during the 2013Mindanao Film Festival in Davao City and Sala Mindanaw in General Santos City— “Ika-3 Putahi” by Joeromer Bacus will be competing once again in Cinemagis. As a psycho-thriller, the film underscores the consequences of an unrequited affection and tells a journey to the limitation of one’s sanity. From human flesh obsession to fairytales On the other hand, the student films offer appealing story themes as much as the aforementioned entries. Aimed at raising consciousness against incest crimes, “Lugos” (Rape) by Christine Pulgo takes us to the struggles of Juliet (the protagonist) and how she faces the aftermath of the most frustrating period of her life. “The issue [of incest crimes] is very alarming. This story is made to raise awareness to the viewers. Thus, this film ought to lessen the crimes and immoralities in our society,” Pulgo said. “A devil in human form,” that is how Angel Frances Borres describes Perla, a certain high school teacher lashing her ruthlessness to her students. However, the question remains: “What little hope shall the students cling on for Perla to change, not for the worse, but for the better?” Inspired from a real cannibal from Japan, Richard Mar Caberte’s “Kaon Ta” chronicles the main character’s perversion over the human f lesh and the appetite-stirring horror that comes with his uncanny obsession. Krystel Hypa Magallanes’ “Unawa” deals with the religious divide and prejudice between Christians and Muslims. Her characters take on the struggles of stereotypes and the hope for a mutual understanding.
Recently, “Unawa” won the Best Film in the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao- Peace Film Festival with the theme, "Mindanao: Lights. Camera. Peace." On a related subject of sort, Jamela Bato’s film, “Ceasefire” exhibits the question of peace and the true price of war between the Moro and the government forces in Mindanao. Cinemagis also offers films with a touch of enchantment, astrology and real-life fairytales with Janine Banday’s “The Perfect Girl,” Eastine Charles Taneo’s “Wa Ko Kakita” and JS Legara’s “Binibining Cancer” “‘Wa Ko Kakita’ was patterned after the legend of the pineapple but with some interesting twists,” Taneo said. Cinemagis perks Cinemagis also features three films with special citation: “Backwash,” a Sendong aftermath documentary film by Jose Alfonso Sendaydiego, the award-winning film thesis of Glenn Mark Doromal, “Walang Katapusang Adlaw” (Infinite Sun) and a documentary film on Cagayan de Oro City's “Hapsay" governance, “Street Vendors” by Joi Gacayan . In addition, the festival offers a free Guerilla Film Making Crash Course to interested film enthusiasts on Jan 24-25, 10:00 am to 12 noon at the XU Little Theater. Over the years, the best student directors have been given scholarships on filmmaking at DLSU – College of St Benilde to hone their skills and pursue a career in the film industry. The recipients of the said scholarship were Glenn Mark Doromal and Jenriel Pons Lagat, who started with Cinemagis during their high school years. Dr.Steven Patrick “Tibo” Fernandez, Felimon B. Blanco and Rudolph Alama comprise the festival’s jury. The winners from the student and professional categories will be announced during the awards night on January 25 at SM City Event Center. Supported by the NCCA through its National Committee on Cinema, Cinemagis is organized in collaboration with Xavier Science Foundation (XSF), Research Institute for Mindanao Culture (RIMCU), XU NSTP and SM City Cagayan de Oro. “Cinemagis has sustained the harvest and in nurturing the potentials of Northern Mindanao filmmakers,” said Savior, adding that the growing involvement of the Mindanaoans, resulting to a higher level of cultural awareness, serves as the evidence to this statemen t.

Congressman Rufus B. Rodriguez recently participated in and spoke during the 6th Plenary Session of the Asian Parliamentarian Assembly held in Islamabad Pakistan last December 8-10, 2013. Cong. Rodriguez delivered his speech harping on the importance of Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction. His speech also brought out the complaint of the Philippines against the establishment of China of its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) and informed the APA of the breakthrough in the peace talks between the Philippine government and the MILF which will eventually pave the way for lasting peace in Mindanao. DSWD Field Office 10 centers obtain level 2 accreditation

wo residential centers of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 10 here can now provide high standards of programs and services to its beneficiaries. The Home for Girls and the Reception and Studies Center for Children (RSCC) based at DSWD Field Office 10 are the first DSWD-run centers in the country to pass the Level 2 accreditation set by the Standards Bureau of DSWD Central Office. The accreditation is part of the standardization order of DSWD in order to protect and promote the best interest and welfare of beneficiaries of residential care facilities of the agency; to promote efficiency, effectiveness and accountability in the managing the centers; and to ensure empowerment of centers in delivering programs and services to its clientele. Administrative Order Number 15 series of 2012 and AO Number 16 series of 2012 issued and signed by
DSWD Secretary Corazon JulianoSoliman provide the ladderized standards of accreditation and rules and regulations on the registration and licensing of social welfare and development agencies and accreditation of social welfare and development programs and services, respectively. Director Thelsa Biolena of the Standards Bureau handed P10,000 each to the centers through Virginia Cardona, the center head of DSWD Field Office 10. The Home for Girls is the primary residential treatment facility for female children aged seven to 18 who are taken from their family due to various abuses and taken custody by the estate while RSCC is a residential facility for neglected, dependent and abandoned children zero to six years old, including victims of abuse and exploitation, and those with special needs.
