MisOr boosts prov’l tourism, launches 1st Kuyamis Festival

M

isamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the success of the 1st Kuyamis Festival, January 8-10, 2014, at the Provincial Capitol Grounds, Cagayan de Oro City.

Governor Bambi Emano thanks all participating municipalities and those showed support for the festivities. The governor also enthused that this is not his success but the success of the people of Misamis Oriental in the hopes of boosting the province’s tourism industry.

Equipped with a firm resolve to repackage its agriculture and tourism industries, the Province of Misamis Oriental launched Wednesday, January 8, the 1st Kuyamis Festival, highlighting the start of the year with a three-day festivity.

The event coincides with the province’s 84th MisOr Week celebrated every first week of the year.

With the theme, “Agro-Turismo sa MisOr Ipalambo,”the provincial government is expected to celebrate the Kuyamis Festival annually with the aid of a legislation the provincial board supposedly enacted through a special session.

Governor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano said the primary purpose of the festival is to promote the coconut industry of the province, thereby strengthening its product development in support of the agri-tourism thrust geared towards making Misamis Oriental the coconut capital of the Philippines.

he road to Cinema Rehiyon 6 is a promotional road screening program sustaining the Cinema Rehiyon Caravan which started last February 2013.

The promotional road screening also fortifies the Cinema Rehiyon Reloaded concept wherein films featured in the previous Cinema Rehiyon are rescreened for a newer set of audience for appreciation and understanding.

This road to Cinema Rehiyon 6 also aims at tapping the support from various academic institutions in Northern Mindanao.

We believe that films, like any other forms of art, are essential media for learning and for liberal education.

Fun Ways to Get Back in Shape for Kagay-anons

A

fter weeks of binge-eating and drinking, on top of most people’s list of resolutions would be to shed off the accumulated holiday calories.

This is the reason why January continues to be the peak season for gym enrolments as New Year’s resolution-motivated members rush to the gym in efforts to start the year right.

Unfortunately, statistics say that 4 out of 5 gym enrolments will go unused. This will only result to money and opportunity wasted. The question now is, how will we remain motivated to lose weight? One tip is to pick a physical activity that suits you best – something you’ll have fun doing, something you look forward to. Here in Cagayan de Oro, there are two activities that are taking the city by storm.

1. Yoga Yoga practitioners have reported benefits such as a more relaxed sleep,

better overall health and well-being, and of course, a noticeable weight loss. Aside from these, yoga also helps increase flexibility, builds stronger muscles and bones, and gets your blood flowing, among several other physiological benefits. But the best thing about yoga is, the more you do it, the more fun you’ll have. Before you know it, you’ve already achieved your fitness goals!

One of the most notable yoga instructors in Northern Mindanao, Miss Julie Bonita, has this to say about yoga: “When I first started practicing yoga, I couldn’t describe it as fun just like other physical activities such as dancing or playing team sports. In fact, it was rather difficult and challenging at first. It only became fun when I started to realize I could do more poses than I expected.

Stewardship: Our Time and Talents In Psalm 90:12, Moses prayed,” Teach us to number our days that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.” As of 2011 the average life span of Filipinos is 68 years (World Bank).How many years in your life remain if you were to live that long?

In the scriptures life is described as determined, decreed, ordained and marked out, in simple terms life is short but how come many waste their time as if they are going to live forever?

Do we really have to wait for tragedies and accidents to happen for us to get reminded that life is short?

We shouldn’t, what happened in the past from the ancient days up to last year, I think is enough for us to be reminded that every minute and every second in our day to day life counts because life is short.

As the song goes “I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow”, therefore we should be mindful of how we use our time and talents because we are all accountable to God one day for everything that He has entrusted us.

We ought to be good stewards

It is called private for a reason

“managers” of what He has bestowed upon us. Why? Because we don’t own anything even our own lives.

Ephesians 5:15-17 says “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Applying this, here are some biblical insights I got on how we should use our time and talents.  We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. Use it in accordance with your faith. If it is serving , then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving , then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently ; if it is to show mercy , do it cheerfully.  Put aside deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Behave decently.  Do not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

hese days, privacy is starting to become a blurred spot. We all crave to keep our personal lives private but we ache for attention and post what could have been a private thing now available for all the world to see.

Social media has changed the mindset and lifestyle of even the most common man.

Gone are the days where we keep photo albums stuck in our living room center-tables waiting for a family member or a guest to unravel.

Now we see even the most intimate of scenes plastered on social networks ready for everyone's taking.

What is worse, we cry foul when people criticize or badmouth what we shared online.

We seek retaliation after being hurt by their comments.

We forgot that what we posted are no longer for our own convenience and satsifaction but that of the viewer.

This could be the reason why Facebook is such a hit to us Filipinos because we want to nose around and see what's going on with our friends and the good thing about it is they will not know we are lurking

and then get irked when we find out our online ans offline friends have been following us closely.

Aside from that, we have online friends who do not seem to have anything else important to do but spread the goings-on of other people or better yet, our own little lives.

These are the ones who seem to have no prior orientation on what or what not to share online.

They must have thought that have done society good and proclaimed themselves a hero.

Do you have a friend like that? For sure, you do. It is easy to spot them, they religiously post supposedly "blind" items which have too many hints that direct you to the real identity of the subject or they tell stories of the people they know without even tackling their own.

When you get online, browse over your friends list or newsfeeds and for sure their icons will magically pop up like manna from heaven.

They are the ones that put juice in our otherwise boring social media news.

So what could have prompted our sudden shift to not recognizing privacy?

Is it our lack of self-worth,

our need for attention or simply because we just want to create a ruckus?

Respect is perhaps the greatest ally of Privacy. Respect for oneself, for others and for the repercussions of one's actions.

I have always been trying to uphold this and I know it is hard but if we continue to breed respect then nothing can go wrong.

Privacy whether in the most modern of ages must always be considered.

We must at all times see the very thin line between what can be disclosed and what can be laid out in the open.

This will save us the hassle of having to retract or explain matters and tight situations we could have easily avoided.

Personal squabbles, intimate acts, indescretions and money problems are not anybody's business specially your online friends.

If you need moral support and allies on your camp, seek for it elsewhere.

Try the real world, who knows the friends right in front of you are all too willing to listen and understand and you just forgot to tap them.

CINEMAGIS sustains the harvest W e are very happy to note that CINEMAGIS is now on its 6th year of nurturing and harvesting the filmmaking potentials of Northern Mindanao. CINEMAGIS started in 2009 as one of the CINEMAS in the REGIONS – film festivals supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts through its National Committee on Cinema.

CINEMAGIS is organized by Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (Xavier University), Xavier Science Foundation, Research Institute for Mindanao Cultures, XU NSTP and SM City Cagayan de Oro. CINEMAGIS is a digital short film competition open to all student and professional film makers from the region.

From 2009 to 2011, CINEMAGIS’ student best directors have been given scholarships and took film courses in DLSU – College of St Benilde.

Mr Glenn Mark Doromal graduated from St Benilde last 2013 and has directed his film thesis titled “Infinite Sun” or “Walay Katapusang Adlaw.” His thesis won acclamations and bagged the Grand Jury Prize during the 2013 Mindanao Film Festival in Davao City.

Infinite Sun will also be shown during the regular screening of CINEMAGIS. Mr Glenn Mark Doromal will also receive a special citation on his achievement.

Mr Jenriel Pons Lagat, an alumnus of Xavier University High School, is on his film production and on his way to his thesis defense – still in St Benilde.

Mr Lagat has directed films that made to the top awards in CINEMAGIS from 2011-2013.

Another breakthrough was Jasmine Limas’ film CARMEN, which gave her the best film award and her road to CINEMA REHIYON 4. Her film CARMEN was also programmed and featured in a film festival in San Francisco, USA. Items above are just proofs of where the CINEMAGIS’ films have gone to. Winners of both the student and professional categories and some outstanding films are programmed in the annual CINEMA REHIYON, which is the mother regional film festival And flagship project of the National Committee on Cinema.

Esguerra, Glenn Mark Doromal, Jenriel Lagat, Aine Codas, Rosalie Zerrudo, Javey Martinez, Ray Anthony Lao, Gray Em Erezo, Krizza Campano and Frenz Dale Magno.

This year, CINEMAGIS is proud to curate films that have social relevance. There are films that reflect on climate, women, gender, peace and development, food health and sanitation, social prejudice, self awareness and respect.

CINEMAGIS- 6th Digital Short Film Festival entries include students: Christine Pulgo’s LUGOS, Angel Frances Borres’ PERLA, Eastine Charles Taneo’s WA KO KAKITA, Richard Mar Cabarte’s KAON TA, Jamela Bato’s CEASEFIRE, Krystel Hypa Magallanes’ UNAWA, Janine Banday’s THE PERFECT GIRL and JS Legara’s BINIBINING KANSER. The professional category has Tat Soriano’s PANAMILIT, Gray Em Erezo’s LUGDANG, Mark Gio Amoguis’ ESTRELLA, Kevin Nico Surposa’s HELLO, and Joeromer Bacus’ IKA-3 PUTAHI. All films will be shown in XU Little Theater and SM City Cagayan de Oro Cinema 3.

2. Rugby Another activity that is steadily increasing in popularity among Kagay-anons is Rugby.

From just a handful of pioneer members, the Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club’s roster of active players have continued to rise, bringing people from different parts of the community together.

Aside from the weekly trainings and group bonding sessions, the team also conducts a regular community outreach

activity at Boys Town Lumbia.

In partnership with the Child Protection Brigade Volunteers, they teach the boys how to play rugby, do some mentoring, and provide delicious meals for the kids.

Among the health benefits of rugby are: cardiovascular fitness and endurance, upper and lower body strength, agility, and speed. And did you know that you can lose an average of 500 – 800 calories per hour of intense rugby training? Now, that should get you thinking.

Senator Cynthia Villar graced the occasion yesterday, along with heads of different line agencies supporting the festival.

The 1st Kuyamis Festival participants include the Municipalities of Manticao, Jasaan, Lugait, Balingoan, Kinoguitan, Medina, Sugbongcogon, Talisayan, Alubijid, Gitagum, Initao, Libertad, Naawan, Opol, Tagoloan, Villanueva, and El Salvador City.

The Municipality of Manticao eventually took home the award for Best Festival Booth or Coconut Display, along with the award is a cash prize of PHP 200,000. Jasaan and Lugait came in second and third respectively.

The Best Photo Exhibit award went to Initao with Naawan and Kinoguitan as second and third place respectively. Best Photo (Tourism Activity) is also won by Initao, while Best Photo (Tourism Site) went to Naawan. The Governor’s Choice is the photo of Lubilan Falls, Naawan.

Historical jottings and resources reveal that Kuyamis was the original name of Misamis. It refers to a variety of sweet coconut found in the province and described as a Golden Malayan Dwarf Coconut Tree, which was the staple food of the earliest known Negrito settlers of Misamis Oriental. The word “kuyamis” was later corrupted to Misamis when the Spanish colonizers settled in the province.

Aside from branding the activity Kuyamis, the provincial government intends to develop the coconut industry since statistics from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) of Misamis Oriental shows the province to be among the country’s top 10 major coconut producers.

The province came into existence on January 1, 1930, as a separate and independent local government unit through Republic Act 3537 enacted by the Philippine Legislature on November 2, 1929.
