6th Cinema Rehiyon’s ‘Crossing Regions’: From Baguio to Davao to Germany
F
rom one region to another, these films feature “crossbreed” of stories shot in different locations, with themes highlighting artistry and gender equality. These films are under the roof of the program, “Crossing Regions” of the upcoming sixth installment of Cinema Rehiyon, to be hosted by Xavier University’s Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) on February 18-22. Three films will be presented for the mixed program, showing at Febuary 21, 7-9p.m. at Xavier University Little Theater
(XULT) and on the next day at SM City Cagayan de Oro Cinema 3, 12 noon to 2:30p.m. The lineup will be frontlined by “Strawberry and Durian” by Noriel Jarito, a story about two artists, who met in the city of Davao and fell in love with each other. However, a desperate small time crook is trying to hunt them. As the film synopsis asks, “Could they possible surpass all the challenges that might come along their way?” Moving on, “Bamboo Flowers” by Maryo delos Reyes will follow Jarito’s film. Written by Aloy Adlawan,
“Bamboo Flowers” is about youth's problems, hopes and aspirations, love and life, forgiveness and acceptance. Among the members of the cast are Mylene Dizon as Sandra, a Boholana who went back to her province after losing her husband and Max Collins as Dolores, a Tourism undergraduate who did his internship at a posh resort and met an old tourist who offered her an opportunity of a lifetime. Lastly, Crossing Regions will feature “Jazz in Love” by Baby Ruth Villarama. Villarama’s film depicts the long distance love affair
between Ernesto "Jazz" Tigaldao and his German boyfriend Theo Rutkowski, which all started on Facebook. Is it going to be a happyever-after ending? That’s for us to find out this February 22 at SM Cinema 3. After the program, there will be an interaction between the audience and the filmmakers. Under the banner of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Cinema Rehiyon forms part of the National Arts Month (NAM) celebration.

Damulog Utilizes Listahanan Data in Local Programs and Services Damulog is one of the 4th class municipalities in the province of Bukidnon. With a total land area of 24,419 hectares, it is situated in the southern part of Bukidnon. Home to 25,538 residents and 4,378 households (2010 survey), it is politically subdivided into seventeen barangays. Damulog is also one of the municipalities in the region who willingly executed a MOA with the Department of Social Welfare and Development as a requisite for the sharing and utilization of the Listahanan data. Prior to the access and utilization of Listahanan or NHTS-
PR data by various LGUs, NGAs, CSOs, and different stakeholders, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) should be made and undertaken between the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development and the data user based on Administrative Order No.2 series of 2009. An approved Resolution by the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) also forms part as a support to the MOA in order to ensure the confidentiality and usability of the requested data for the purposes agreed upon and between DSWD. The National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-
PR) or what is now known as Listahanan is an information management system that the government uses in identifying who and where the poor are and is being spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. It aims to address poverty reduction through a scientific and target- focused strategy. After it has executed a Memorandum of Agreement with the DSWD, the municipality of Damulog has made use of the Listahanan data in the registration and issuance of PWD ID cards for recommendation for livelihood projects through the National Poverty Reduction Program (LPRAT). The Listahanan data also served as the basis for financial assistance for the victims of natural calamities including their hospitalization as well as in the validation and registration of Indigenous Peoples through tribal groups . This is a clear manifestation how the NHTSPR data can be very useful and significant in terms of addressing the needs of the locality through its various programs and services. Through the utilization of the data, Local Government Units can assure to the constituents that programs and services are being rendered to those deserving poor households.

Tabo sa Liceo, the Pasikatan talent competitions, the all-new Search for the Liceo Campus Ambassadors, the Grand Alumni Homecoming, the Folkloric dance troupe major concert, movies at the park, a debate championship plus there are carnival rides and booths at the car park among others! Things are really getting more exciting as Liceo nears her 60th year and for sure, there will even be more spectacular programs to watch out for in the coming months! The much-anticipated 2015 Search for the Liceo Diamond Queen is something to look forward to among others. It only happens every five years, so it’s definitely a mustsee event. I am truly thankful to Liceo U for making me part of the community. Being one of the institution’s employees is indeed something I am very much proud of.

rish novelist and poet James Joyce said mistakes are the portals of discovery. Preparing for the recital show was not easy, juggling with the rehearsals and preparing the program details was quite messy. Getting obsessed with program covers for the first time made me realize that I’m not only melancholic when it comes to singing but as well as visual arts. Even with the cover obsession I still made a mistake by forgetting very important details to be placed in the cover and the worse I just realized it after everything was almost done. Gladly I did not panicked, instead God gave me the wisdom so I placed the missing important details on the tag knot which holds the program together and to my surprise it actually added art to the program. During the show, as teachers I and my partner were supposed to perform
Looking back, I am amazed at how I have grown as a person while working for Liceo U. The experiences I had are more than enough to fill several portable flashdrives and all are memorable enough to store them for a lifetime. Four years have passed and hopefully I will be able to spend more years serving the university and her community because it truly gives me great joy to work for a company that nurtures creativity, expands horizons and embraces art for the betterment of many. For being a school that hones excellence and provides enrichment of both the mind and soul, I wish and pray that Liceo U will continue to sail smoothly forward to 60 more years or beyond. So if you happen to have time, hope you can come and join us in our celebration and let’s all have fun! Viva, Liceo!

after all students have performed but because of a miscommunication to our surprise we were called ahead and so we went up stage and did our part. Earlier that day, I tried my best to memorize my musical pieces since I planned not to bring anything on stage but on the other hand I was anxious because I’m copy dependent . When the show started I said to myself I’ll just get my copy later before I sing, eventually it didn’t happen because we were called ahead and I just thank God everything went well with that song. It was indeed a purposeful mistake because I was able
to deliver it more freely and I was not looking at any copy anymore, perhaps God is also working on my weakness in this area about being “copy dependent”. Mistakes do not necessarily mean total failure, at times God allows them to bring out the best in us and discover creativity. Staying focused and not panicking greatly helps whether up on stage or finishing something to meet a deadline. Moreover, delegating other tasks are also important because any event is never a one man show, it is always a team. Letting go of the director’s task is one of the best decisions I made for the recital this year. I could never have the time to memorize my pieces and prepare myself as a performer if I still chose to direct. It was not a perfect show but definitely an improved one. More learning this year, more improvements on the next recital.

Capiz Fisherfolks Given Hope by Receiving New Boats W
hile most people have focused their attention and assistance to victims of super typhoon Yolanda in Samar and Leyte, the poor fisherfolks of the remote barangay of Butacal in the municipality of Pan-ay, Capiz were tear-eyed as they received brand new fishing boats complete with brand new engines and fishing nets. Barangay Butacal is the most devastated barangay in Capiz, bearing the brunt of 250 kilometers per hour destructive winds which whipped up twenty five feet high storm surges which swept coastal houses up to two kilometers inland. Eighty percent of the fisherfolks’ fishing boats were completely destroyed while the rest were partially damaged. Led by Team Leaders Tony Ortiz, Danny Olivares and Timmy Nivera, graduates of Ateneo Grade School 54, High School 58 and College 62, better known as AHS Grupo 58, together with their partnersdonors the Prince of Peace Parish of Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, led by Deacon Leandro Centenera and wife Teresita and David and Yolanda Ploors, and the Salt and Light for Christ Community of Manila led by Neomi Olivares, and other prayer
groups, separately launched a fund raising campaign to finance the production of around forty fishing boats. Four days after Yolanda struck in November last year, Ateneo Grupo 58 and the Salt and Light for Christ Community were on the ground distributing relief goods to the towns of Sogod all the way to Daan Bantayan in Northern Cebu and the whole of Capiz, ending their relief program in the towns of Sigma and Pan-ay, ending in Barangay Butacal. Butacal was chosen for the second phase program, the livelihood rehabilitation phase, because the group believed that, aside from it being the most devastated barangay in Capiz, no one would dare go the island because it is accessible only by a one and a half hour pump boat ride. Last Wednesday, January 29, the group awarded selected fisherfolks three twenty-footer, four twenty fourfooter, and one thirty-footer pump boats. Mayor Dante Bermejo of Pan-ay provided the town’s social center/ gym as the site where the boats were constructed by skilled carpenters/boat builders. Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDO RFC): A Kagay-anon Journey to the Sport of Rugby by Noel Villa
E
ach one of us has a role to play in this world: a good father, a great leader, and a lot more. As for me, I choose to be a simple teacher who loves to teach and share my passion for Rugby. I admit, I am no Jonah Lomu (the first global superstar in Rugby Union) and I will never be like him inside the pitch. But that’s not the only way one can spread love for the sport, especially in a place where almost nobody has ever seen a real rugby ball. Back in the United Kingdom where I stayed for 27 years, I grew up playing rugby for my school. I love how the sport teaches discipline, strategy and team work and of course, the show of strength and agility which every sportsman can relate. When I came home to the Philippines for a vacation in September 2011, I was lucky to find a rugby team to train with. My first team, The Raging Bisons, won 2nd Place in the Plate Division during the first ever Rugby 7’s in the 2012 Philippine National Games. I later joined the Globe Immortals Team and have contributed to Rugby 101 program to teach the sport at the Ultra grounds, which I find quite fulfilling. Love brought me to Cagayan de Oro City in June of 2013 and I have settled in this lovely City ever since. But there was one problem: nobody that I talked to knew anything about Rugby when I first came here. So, I started jogging at Pueblo de Oro carrying my only Rugby Ball, tossing the ball up in the air from 5:30am to 7:00am, with the sole mission of getting a curious jogger to ask what the egg-shaped ball was for. That proved to be a challenge and yes, I got some odd looks from the people who saw me then. For the next few days I did this religiously and though not having much
luck, I didn’t think of giving up on the sport that has helped me a lot growing up. After a few days of no luck, I realized I have to change my strategy. Since there was no Rugby club in the local scene, I decided to create one. So in August 2013, I for med a Facebook Page which I named Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDO RFC) hoping to catch the attention of those who are curious about the sport and possibly get them to play Rugby. I made sure to advertise the Club in different FB Groups, subtly recruiting boys and girls to try playing the sport and practically promoting its history and growth into the mainstream sports scene. Three guys showed up during the first training session, then became ten and soon enough, we got girls into the Team. Now there are over thirty members in the Club and counting. Above all, I am proud that CDO RFC Team has developed a heart for the community through our social advocacy, “Help Change the Life of a Child” providing sports therapy and feeding program to the children of Boys Town in Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City. We also advocate the value of charity and goodwill to the community through our “Give Blood, Play Rugby” Program where we donate blood through the Northern Mindanao Medical Center. Creating and maintaining the CDO RFC was no walk in the park and there is still so much work to be done. I started the Club with no funds and had to rely on friends to share some of their precious savings so I can run the Club with integrity. There were paper works to accomplish, fees to pay and plenty of unanswered questions such as, “Where shall we train the kids?”, “Where do we get the balls, crash pads and cones for training?”,
“How do we produce the kits?”, “How do we recruit players?” or “Where do we get the budget for rugby development?” and so on. Most of the answers to these questions actually cost me my own savings and precious time. Steve Jobs once said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle.” True, there were challenging obstacles along the way but I chose to do this because I love what I do and I believe that there are talents waiting to be discovered. Now I can proudly say that after five months of training under the sun or rain, CDO RFC is ready to take on another milestone: compete in a real game against more experienced teams. On February 22, 2014, come and support your local Team, the Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club, in a historic event as they compete with the Cebu Dragons and Davao Durians at the Pelaez Sports Complex. Show your support by attending the free Get Into Rugby (GIR) Clinic, open for Boys and Girls aged 11 to 16, at 8:00 a.m. onwards and cheer for CDO RFC during the kick-off games of the VisMin Rugby Football League starting 12:00 noon.

Training on devolved functions for subdivision project held

The Housing and Land Use and Regulatory Board is holding a one-day Refresher Training on devolved functions in the processing and approval of subdivision applications and other related permits today, February 14, 2014 from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Deluxe Hotel, this city. According to CPDO Coordinator Isidro Borja, the training is envisioned to refresh and update the Local Government Unit and NGA Technical personnel in permit issuance on the latest guidelines, rules and regulations of subdivision processing and zoning regulations; to review the existing permit system/ procedural flow and recommend for an applicable process in the light of CSC-ARTA requirements, and to facilitate linkages with other permit issuing agencies in order to fast track the issuance of clearances and other permits. Councilor Alexander S. Dacer, chair of the City Council committee on subdivision and landed estate was invited to attend the said activity.
Agri body to tackle MOU for road projects in brgys THE City Council committee on agriculture and fisheries chaired by Councilor Annie Daba will soon discuss the request of the Barangay Council of Pagatpat for the city government to enter into a Memorandum of Undertaking (MOU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Agriculture (DA) for the release of P1 million, which is the 10% equity for the implementation of the Pagatpat-San Simon farmto- market road project. The Power learned that the DA has allocated P10 million for the project, which will greatly benefit constituents of Pagatpat and San Simon. The committee will also act upon the request of the Barangay Council of Tignapoloan for allocation of funds in the amount of P120,000 as the city’s equity for the P1.2 million farm- tomarket road project in Barangay Tignapoloan. DSWD Field Office 10 sweeps Pantawid Pamilya awards Cagayan de Oro City --- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 10 bagged several honors in this year’s year-end national Program Review and Evaluation Workshop of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Pantawid Pamilya) in Legazpi City, Albay. The field office brought home several awards, including first place in Family Development Session Implementation in 2013. The National Project Management Office of Pantawid Pamilya presented the awards to DSWD Field Office 10 Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, Assistant Regional Director for Operations Aldersey Mumar Dela Cruz, Pantawid Pamilya Regional Project Coordinator Kenneth Haze Sanchez, and Monitoring and Evaluation Officers Phillip Waye Mappala and Divorrah Meneses during the said event. The various awards include: highest monitored over eligible for health facility visit compliance in 2013; highest Family Development Session compliance rate in 2013; highest education compliance rate in 2013; highest percentage of payments, compliance and appeals grievances resolved within 30 days; second highest percentage of attending children; second highest monitored over eligible for education compliance in 2013; third highest health facility visit compliance rate in 2013; and third highest deworming compliance rate in 2013. In his Facebook account, Mappala posted that the awards would mean a greater challenge to all Pantawid Pamilya workers ‘to always beat our best.” For her part, Sanchez congratulated Pantawid Pamilya workers of DSWD Field Office 10 saying, “more than the awards, it's you that I am most proud of. I knew you can do it.
