CINEMAGIS 6TH Digital Short Film Festival Calls for Entries

CINEMAGIS is the region’s first short film festival which aims at encouraging our film making enthusiasts to address and reflect on Mindanao experiences, voices, aspirations and issues.

Filmmakers are also encouraged to draw inspirations from any local lore or any pressing realities that capture the essence of MAGIS- a take on doing more, leaping extra mile, or to have more care for others, doing better things for the greater glory of God through renewal of the self.

CINEMAGIS aims at recognizing and strengthening the skills of our filmmakers to come up with significant body of works that will lead them to national recognitions and contribute to the rising Mindanao Film Industry.

This year, CINEMAGIS suggests the following themes, Peace Themes (Inner Peace, Cultural Solidarity, Human Rights, Gender and Development, and Harmony with the Environment); Governance, Environment, Health and Sanitation, Food Security, Cultural Understanding and Awareness and Life’s funny and subtle contradictions.

hen Christmas season rolls in, expenses are also expected to pile up. With all the gifts to buy, the food to prepare, people to meet, parties and reunions to host and attend, new things to splurge on – overspending at this time of the year is usually the rule, not the exception.

Of course, you’re probably basking in cash because of the bonuses you got, and yes, you deserve to enjoy the money you’ve spent a year slaving on.

But remember, it pays to not go overboard with your expenses; otherwise you’ll be spending the first few weeks of the New Year regretting your poor decisions.

hristmas is just a wink away and the coming year is about to arrive! I have listed down a few items on my Wish List for 2014 not for myself but for all of us, so here goes: 1. A Better Political Climate This is I know a very far-fetched but still doable wish for our country. I hope that Filipinos will have a more discerning attitude when it comes to choosing our leaders. Those that will not put our nation in a bad light but will finally uplift our morale as a country and as a people.

2. A Better Environment This has always been part of my prayers that we will all eventually wake-up and face the sad music that the world is no longer as healthy as it used to be.

Measures we put in place are no longer enough to mitigate the environmental degradation that we are experiencing however there is still time to shift and make things better.

3. A Better Self-Esteem I believe all of us are in need of an esteem makeover. Not that we really lacked one but because we need to make ourselves feel proud of ourselves, our culture and our heritage. We as one people must rise above bickering, racial hate and bigotry and move forward together in order to achieve real success.

4. A More Giving Heart We are known to be compassionate and kindhearted and we should cultivate this even further.

Philanthropy must always be in our minds and hearts at all times. We should not wait for another tragedy of unimaginable scale to act and lend our hands.

My 2014 Wish List

verything is set, everyone is ready... In Three, Two, One "Good evening everyone" our little emcees greet the audience with enthusiasm as they stood on stage.

Blackout as our first set of nursery and toddlers class went up, fade in music and so they danced everyone was clapping their hands then suddenly the music stopped.

I felt my heart beating fast... What happened?

Music played again from the top they danced again and in the midst of troubleshooting wisdom came in fade out...

Proceed to the next numbers while we were figuring out what happened... File played was corrupted, original file was also corrupted.

In my mind "Lord help" Second wisdom came in... Wifi, Youtube... One of the crew said "very slow". I said let's just try it... Then this time we all said "please Lord" ... And it worked the song loaded fast. Once again the first set of nursery and toddlers went up and danced. I was able to breathe normally by then.

Wisdom in the midst of pressure, this is what I am most thankful for despite the flaws of the show. Two weeks ago I was able to listen to a sermon on God being the overall in charge even in the small details in our lives.

The preacher also said that all he can do is to preach but it is God who will give us the experience, true enough what I experienced during that show confirms that "He is indeed charge".

hristmas is a day of celebration. It is a day that remembers the birth of the Saviour of Mankind born in a lowly manger. We are not truly certain if it really did happen on the 25th of this month.

What we do know is that, we celebrate and give thanks for the greatest gift of all. To most, Christmas is a time for giving and receiving of gifts. To others, it means partying and fellowship. And, to others, it means sharing. So, what is the real essence of Christmas?

The heart is one wonderful organ that is very essential to one’s existence. It pumps blood into the whole body, and any diseases involving the heart, affects a person’s physical being. Any emotional stress placed on the heart is likewise detrimental.

Thus, what one feeds the body, feeds the heart too.

In like manner, out of the abundance f the heart the mouth speaks... everything is inter-related as it were.

As much as I would like to write about what foods one were not to over-indulge in this merry month, that can clog the arteries and deposit all those cholesterol plaques, making blood sluggish and affecting the blood pressure and function (there will be another time for that), I want to share a very inspiring interview I had with two groups of professionals and students who made it their mission to help our indigenous countrymen.

The first group they call themselves as ROTA PILIPINAS and started as mountain climbers, geared towards nature- nurture, which included tree planting around MAPAWA, a reforestration site near the city of the golden friendship.

When they met with the head of Climb Against Cancer, ROTA then started bringing in school supplies and even bringing in slippers to Indigenous tribes in Bukidnon.

One can just imagine the difficulties of climbing

mountains with carry on supplies in their head, shoulders or backs!

Their most recent activity is that of TREK and TREAT, where they raise funds in order to sponsor a sick child!

The 2nd group call themselves SULADS and they have been in existence since the 1950’s.

They are student volunteers who stay and live with an indigenous tribe.

They teach, not only to educate the members of the tribe, but, also learn from the ways of the people in the mountains.

The members of ROTA PILIPINAS and the SULADS, are but a small representation of the many more groups or individuals who have found it in their hearts the dedication and commitment to share, to serve and to give, must have found the real essence of CHRISTMAS, LOVE, manifest through SHARING. Merry Christmas everyone!

If you cheat on your budget, remember that you’re cheating nobody else but yourself. Also, make your family understand how important it is to stick to this budget. By doing so, you are ultimately teaching your kids an important life lesson.

2. Be wary of Christmas Sales.

Most of the time, when we see a SALE sign plastered on a store window, we are tempted to go in and take a peek. Before you know it, you’ll be grabbing off the racks too many stuff that you don’t even need!

So what if it’s on 70% sale? Do you really think you can use that furlined sweater? Try to remain practical even if you’re seeing so many SALE signs everywhere. Buy only what you and your family need, and make sure it’s in your expenses list too.

Otherwise, forget those % discounts and move on.

3. Charge only when really necessary.

You know that little plastic card in your wallet? It’s making you think you have more money than you actually have. Don’t fall into that trap. Treat your credit card like cash, and before you swipe, make sure you have the capacity to pay it off soonest. You don’t want to get the shock of your life when you receive your next bill, right? So record all your credit card expenses, and buy only the things you have previously listed in your Christmas spending plan. If you don’t, then you might end up with debts that are way bigger than your bonus.

immediately set aside the equivalent amount in cash and do not spend this money. Doing so will help you avoid overspending and you will have money available to pay in full your credit card bill when it falls due next month,” says Mr. Tabañag.

4. Be practical in giving gifts.

Make a list, and check it twice!

Not for who’s naughty or nice, but to check who you really must give a gift to. Remember, if your budget does not allow you to give gifts, then don’t force yourself. There’s no sense racking up a lot of debt just to give presents.

You can show your love and respect to friends and family through a sincere greeting or a warm hug, or you can make gifts yourself! Bake cookies, cook something delicious, or make something with your hands.

It will be even more meaningful than the store-bought gifts.

As Mr. Tabañag says, “Don’t try to impress the receiver by giving expensive gifts. You really cannot buy more love or friendship with expensive gifts. Besides, a gift doesn’t have to cost so much to be valuable and useful. So look for simple, unique and inexpensive presents. Something that holds special meaning to the person you’re giving it to. For instance, a distant lolo and lola will absolutely love a framed picture of your family which shows their adorable “apos.” Or you can send them a video message with a song and dance number by the apos.”

5. Remember the electricity bill.

By now your house is probably full of twinkling lights and sparkly ornaments. Good for you! But do not forget that the beautiful lights will cost you. Make sure to turn the lights on only when needed: during

5. A More Positive Outlook – We have been battered and bruised with so many tragedies (natural and man-made) this year and the world saw how we coped. They have admired our resiliency and our unwavering spirit. They saw how we crumbled and how we brushed off all the debris and still able to smile afterwards. If we continue to do this, we will still be able to survive anything and even come out better than ever.

These wishes I listed are something we cannot feel right away but if we all begin one step at a time, the entire New Year will truly become fantastic!

Cost-wise, this beats partying in expensive venues, catering or buying party food packages from restaurants. Not to mention that home-cooked food is more delicious. Don’t foot the bill for the whole occasion. People will enjoy the party more knowing that they’ve contributed something to the affair.

For Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties, you can agree with your neighbors to have just one big party instead of each family having their own. Encourage everyone to bring some food and drinks to the party.

Yes it was not that big trouble but it just proves that whether it is a big thing or small thing, God cares.

Aside from being thankful I learned several practical things in running a show such as make two original backup files in every audio or video file to be used, prepare a back up laptop in case the one being used crashes, prepare extra connectors, extension wires, mic cables and LCD projector.

Technical dry run is a must and every part of the crew must be well prepared. Do not panic while troubleshooting, grace under pressure is very attainable when we stay calm. Lastly nothing beats prayer.

Sometimes even if we do the best that we can in preparing, unknown possibilities can still happen even in productions so above everything else lift everything up for His guidance and thank Him whatever happens because He is always in charge.

N STEAG PROJECT SKILLS: Villanueva Town Mayor Julio Uy lead the graduation ceremonies for the 180 Project SKILLS (Knowledge In Life-Long Skills) scholars who recently completed various technical and vocational courses at the Cagayan de Oro Bugo School of Arts and Trade (COBSAT). Aside from completing the training requirements, the graduates were also conferred with the National Competency Certificates (NC2) by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). estlé Philippines recently kicked off the latest leg of its farmer caravan in Mindanao, visiting several key coffeeproducing areas to provide local farmers with training and assistance in the areas of coffee production and post-production.

Among the places visited by the caravan were Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Valencia City, Bukidnon; General Santos City, South Cotabato, and nearby areas. During each visit, Nestlé agronomists imparted knowledge about proper harvesting conditions and methods; discussed post-harvest processes such as floating, building all-weather dryers and hulling; and shared information about the Nestlé Quality Grading and Standards, the company’s criteria in purchasing coffee beans, which includes moisture content and cup taste.

Apart from offering training programs, the Nestlé farmer caravan also informs farmers about the opening of Nestlé satellite buying stations, where they can directly sell their coffee produce to the company at rates competitive with the global market prices.

The Nestlé buying station in Tagum City subsequently opened on October 14, while

the ones in Valencia City and in General Santos City started operations on October 21.

The Farmer Caravans to support the opening of the buying stations are at the core of Nestlé’s Farmer Connect Model, a direct buying program that encourages small farmers and small-scale intermediaries to sell their produce directly to Nestlé. The model is a key program under the NESCAFÉ Plan, Nestlé’s global initiative that supports responsible coffee farming, production and consumption.

“The Nestlé farmer caravan is specifically designed to provide end-to-end support to our coffee farmers,” said Jeremie Laurente, North Mindanao Agronomist, Nestlé Philippines. “We share information and methodologies that can help them improve their harvests through our training programs while the announcement of the buying station openings provides them with an opportunity to immediately benefit from their produce,” added Art Baria, Assistant Vice President and Head of Agri-Services, Nestlé Philippines.

The caravan is set to visit Sultan Kudarat during the last part of the year before moving on to other buying stations in 2014.
