Liceo U Pep Squad wins Third NCC Regional Cheerleading Title
F
or the third straight year, they have proven that they are the best cheerleading team in Mindanao. The Liceo Titans All-Stars Pep Squad retained their title as the North Mindanao Regional Champion of the National Cheerleading Championship last November 24 at the Liceo Civic Center. The team’s victory will enable them to qualify once again in the National Finals of the NCC in Manila come March 2014. They were ranked No. 6 best squad in the Philippines in the 2010 National Cheerleading Championships (NCC) in Manila. Composed of 24 members, the Titans All-Stars Pep Squad are set to conquer the Nationals in the 9th season of the NCC in 2014. The squad is mentored by Coach John Rey “Jay” Tangcalagan, a registered nurse and former member of the Liceo Pep Squad. Another Liceo dance team qualifies in a component of the Regional Qualifiers, the National Dance Championship. The Liceo Next Moves is the lone team that bid for the slot for the 2014 Finals in Manila. Liceo Next Moves’ eleven member team is under the artistic direction of Mr. Roger Odron.

A different Xavier Festival Day Expect no fireworks this year. If the events of this month are any indication, the XU community is hinting on a different Xavier Festival Days. In fact, it won’t be Xavier Days anymore but Xavier Day. Just one day of celebration. “In light of the enormous suffering and needs of the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda, we are significantly simplifying this year’s celebration of the feast of our patron, St Francis Xavier,” writes Fr Roberto Yap SJ, president of XU in his letter to the community. It will be a much toned-down yet a more meaningful Xavier Festival Day (XFD) on Dec 2, beginning with a Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the statue of St Francis Xavier at 8 am then a Eucharistic Celebration at the University Church at 8:30. Like before, XFD goers can still look forward to an opening showcase filled with song and dance. This will serve as the main fanfare in the morning. Band performances, competitions and film showings will keep
visitors and guests occupied in the afternoon. The XU Grade School will have its field demonstration, Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts will feature Goethe Institute’s Scientific Film Festival, Dulaang Atenista will perform improvisational theater and The Xavier Stage will be restaging their adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as fund raising for Tabang Visayas. At night, the University Church, Belen and a Tree of Hope will be lighted. The Himig Atenista Finals Night will close the affair. With a much simplified celebration, “Savings… will be remitted to Tabang Visayas. We will also encourage everyone to bring some relief goods as an entrance ticket of sorts to XFD,” exhorts Fr Yap. I
Better realization, new challenge
t’s been more than Three years since I started teaching others how to sing and never was a dull moment with every student I had. As I look back some of them started when they can barely clear out their words. I remember my Four year old student back then who runs around the classroom before I can catch her and let her sing and now she confidently stands in front of everyone and sings her piece with her own actions and melts everyone who is watching her. Even when I am tired their small happy faces and enthusiasm to learn keeps me going. Recently, two of my babies in my class joined a citywide singing competition for the first time and as expected I am more nervous than them. Taking their videos on the day gave me chills that I last felt when I was playing a major role for a theatre production. It was really like I was the
one standing on stage. Though I’m laughing to myself now, that nervousness brings me back to memory lane. Aside from the theatre production days it brings me back to my contest days as well. The tummy butterflies, shaking knees and large crowd I went through was something I started facing with little courage at the beginning but as time passed and I just kept on singing more, the little courage I had blossomed to the right confidence that I have today. I am grateful that I went through hardships during training because I wouldn’t be able to understand and inspire my students today. One of my babies grabbed the gold the other didn’t but for me both of them are winners because I know that they have done their best. As their mentor what they have shown me was enough. From that experience I’m pretty sure they have greatly learned a lot from
the preparations and the competition itself. As for me I have realized a lot as well even as a trainer. Looking back to my own experiences and finding the weaknesses of my students now inspires me to push them more in a better way with practical possible solutions to make their weaknesses as their strengths. While I was on my way to work the day after the competition I was busy evaluating in my mind what transpired during the contest preparations and relating it to my regular classes and so I realized that these kids doesn’t only need technical lessons in voice but as well as theatre arts. True enough, without the theatre production I have gone through I wouldn’t be this expressive on stage. Now this is the question I ask myself How am I going to incorporate theatre arts in my classes? This is the real new challenge ... but anyway I love it.

his is perhaps the battle we all have to fight against. An unseen assassin that lurks in our midst while slowly killing millions of people everywhere in the last few decades. It is uncanny and bows to no one. It basks in the world of carefree carnal pleasures and gains strength when it is ignored. This is the crisis that needs to be resolved the soonest time possible or it will eventually refuse to go away. This has caused panic and confusion in the Eighties and still widely misunderstood and misinterpreted even today. Some people continue to see it as a disease that is spread by simple physical contact or a disease for a specific gender. This misconception must be eradicated or we will all continue to live in doubt and fear. There are a few people however who refuse to succumb to this and vowed to fight until the battle is won. AIDS or Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome and HIV are no longer a war between the afflicted and the disease but it is now everyone’s struggle. As of late, there are around 382 new HIV infections reported and that is not a small number. It is just a peek of perhaps a bigger picture where there are more people out there who are infected but never had the courage to move forward and have themselves checked. To encourage people to look more closely into this nagging health crisis and to empower everyone to speak about it and understand it even further, artists from Cagayan de Oro have banded together once more to raise awareness and to stand up against AIDS and HIV and give their all-out support to the people with HIV. A solidarity march, health forum, photo exhibit, monologues and a concert became the medium for these artists to express that they do care. Pagbantog Kagayan, a collective of artists in Cagayan de Oro are here
to bring forward another issue that needs attention and discussion. They have stood against violence and terror and they are doing it now for the people living with HIV. They will not stop as long as there are issues that are worth fighting for. This red revolution is just the beginning of the many things we all can do to face this issue head on. Let us all try to break the wall of ignorance and for once create an environment that allows an in-depth look on how HIV and AIDS can affect you and the future generations. It is no longer enough to talk about it and know about it, it is time to stand up against it. The time to rise and fight is now. The person that can arrest the situation is you. One more thing, let us not hate or discriminate the people living with HIV because they need all the support they can get to be able to get through this. They are not the enemy, the virus is. Do your share and be aware.

Taking Inspiration From Nature
t's been three weeks since Yolanda ravaged Visayas. As we do all the packing, donating, and caring for the victims with smiles on our tear-stained faces, let us not forget that it is also high time for us to consider solutions to prevent a similar catastrophe from happening all over again. This reminds me of the enlightening conversation I had with Italpinas Inc's Italian CEO and Architect Romolo Nati just a few weeks before the super typhoon. To those of you who do not know, Italpinas (or ITPI) is a forward-thinking, highly innovative real estate developer that focuses on building green, sustainable, and typhoon adaptable structures such as their pet project Primavera Residences in uptown Cagayan de Oro. I'd like to share with you some of the very fascinating ideas I picked up during the course of our conversation. NATURE HAS THE ANSWER ALL ALONG There are patterns which can be found behind natural living structures. These processes, when studied and thoroughly examined, can be translated into architectural designs and sustainable
solutions. This is known as biomimicry and though it has long been in existence, it has been overlooked amid all the “breakthroughs” and new ways of doing things. ITPI uses biomimicry as the basis for their building's designs, taking inspiration from Mother Nature herself. This allows their buildings to withstand calamities such as typhoons and earthquakes. For example, the awardwinning Coral City design was inspired by the natural formation of the corals – the way they aggregate themselves in communities and their ability to defend against external attacks and predators. The ITPI project in Sto. Tomas, Batangas was based on the structure of the sea sponge, while CDO's very own Primavera Residences was inspired by the termite mound where air gets drawn from the outside and circulated throughout the mound, creating a natural ventilation scheme that translates to lower energy consumption. These inspirations drawn from nature allow the buildings to adapt to its surroundings and work with nature instead of against it resulting to sustainable, forward-thinking,
and cost-effective solutions. SIMPLE SOLUTIONS “Nature always tends to act in the simplest way” - Bernoulli You know how it is when you're trying to solve a word puzzle and you rack your brain for the most complicated solution only to find out that you have overlooked the simplest one? That is exactly how it is with ITPI's nature-inspired superstructures. The solutions are very simple that you will find yourself scratching your head why you didn't think of it sooner. These simple solutions cost less to build and less to maintain, resulting to a win-win scenario for everyone. BEAUTY IS WHAT WORKS Beauty affects people, says Arch. Nati. If your design solves the problem but the result does not look beautiful, then it was not properly done. If something works perfectly and is done right, it will come out beautifully. He cites nature as an example once more. Nature does not think in terms of beauty; it concerns itself only of functioning properly, but it ends up being elegant and beautiful because it works. Dante Alighieri did say once that “nature is the art of God.”
REAL ESTATE'S IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Arch. Nati pointed out that the world's cities occupy only 2% of the Earth's land area, and yet it accounts for 70% of harmful greenhouse gas emissions. At the rate we are going, it is expected that by 2030, 59% of the world's population will be living in urban areas, and by the year 2050, the consumption of energy for cooling will be grow tenfold. Increased energy consumption could lead to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions which will eventually lead to climate change and environmental degradation. Real estate development plays a big role in this, making sustainable architecture a necessary long-term solution. Relying too much on technology coupled with our misconception that we have unlimited resources – this has led to the rapid deterioration of our environment. Where our cities once adapted to the local environment, we now manipulate our environment to adapt to us, hence the big change. To become sustainable, we need to reverse this mindset and change our perspective. We need to go back to nature.

he Xavier Stage pulled off Layeta Bucoy’s 2009 Palanca Award-Winning One Act Play Doc Resureccion: Gagamutin ang Bayan, November 21, 2013, Thursday 4:30PM at the Lucas Hall grounds of Xavier University. As a participating theater group in the first Ateneo Theater Festival, the two-year old resident repertory theatre company of Xavier University staged Resureccion as its fringe performance. Dulaang Atenista initiated to gather theatre groups from other Ateneo schools to realize the Ateneo Theater Festival in celebration of their silver anniversary. Tanghalang Ateneo, Teatro Humanidades and Dulaang Atenista were the main entries during the festival. The Xavier Stage has presented Doc Resureccion during the election period earlier this year to serve as voters’ education for the community. The production was brought and shown twice in Medina, in SM
Cagayan de Oro car park and in Xavier University. This was also restaged recently as a command performance during the Sulat Dula 3 last October as requested by the playwright herself, Ms. Layeta Bucoy. During the Ateneo Theater Festival, The Xavier Stage, once again, was given the chance to introduce to the community the Resureccion Family and their bloodis-not-always-thicker-than-water story. An absolutely outdoor performance, the play was daring not only with the theme it explored but with the very setup of the stage. The cloudy sky was signaling rain. But what seemed a challenge actually became an advantage for The Xavier Stage. Without technical lights, the sky and wind enhanced the play’s realistic feel since the story coincidentally happened on a seashore—affording a unique experience for the audience and for the actors of The Xavier Stage.

Cagayan de Oro City --Department of Labor and Employment-X (DOLE-X) Regional Director, Alan M. Macaraya, awards some twelve (12) private companies of the region with the Tripartite Certificate of Compliance with Labor Standards (TCCLS) first level, under the Incentivizing Compliance Program, on 26 November 2013 at the DOLE-X Conference Room, 3F Monte Carlo Building, RER Subdivision Phase I, Kauswagan National Highway, Cagayan de Oro City. TCCLS is an award given to an establishment that has been verified by the Tripartite Certification Committee (TCC), composed of DOLE, Management, and Workers sectors representatives,
as compliant with Labor Standards, Occupational Safety and Health Standards. Assessment includes no violation on General Labor Standards for the past three (3) years and there is no fatal accident or serious occupational illness within one (1) year. This recognition program is in line with the development approach in the enforcement activities of the Department. The principle is to do away with Government interference in the internal operation of the company and allow management to self-assess its compliance to standards. Government will only intercede if there are requests for assistance. In his message Director Macaraya, highlighted that

the TCCLS will motivate, not only the awardees but other establishments who signify their intentions to participate, to voluntarily comply with Labor Standards and other statutory standards to promote partnership, thus, preventing labor disputes and advance workplace productivity.
