Cine Europa in full swing in Cagayan de Oro

C

ine Europa's Sweet Sixteen is coming to Cagayan de Oro with no less than European Union Ambassador Guy Ledoux and University President Dr Marino M. Lerin opening the festival in Liceo de Cagayan University.

Honorable Mayor Oscar S. Moreno will also grace the event.

Deputy Head of Mission Raoul Imbach of the Embassy of Switzerland will join the launch of Cine Europa.

"Operation Libertad" tells how in 1978, the members of a small revolutionary group break into a Swiss bank near Zurich and how they tried to prove the collusion between the Helvetic financial system and dictators. Thirty years later, the tapes of the Operation Libertad resurfaced and the drama and action unfold.

Film enthusiasts from Cagayan de Oro will enjoy 21 films starting with the special screening of Swiss film, Operation Libertad. The film tells the story of a group of a small revolutionary group that broke into a Swiss bank way back in the late 70s.The action was to prove then, the conspiracy between the Helvetic financial system and dictators.

Aside from the Swiss' "Operation Libertad", moviegoing public from Cagayan De Oro will be able to enjoy 20 other European films from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary , Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

EU Ambassador Guy Ledoux said that the presence of Cine Europa in Cagayan de Oro sends a strong signal of how important is the cultural collaboration between the European Union and the Philippines.

He also said that people from Mindanao continue to enjoy Cine Europa film festival which is the European Union's lasting gift to the Philippines and is also the reaffirmation of the shared cultural values of the Europeans with the Filipinos.

This is the fifth time that the film festival is going to Cagayan de Oro City in partnership with the Liceo de Cagayan University.

Cine Europa is ongoing in CDO until the 13th of October 2013.

EU Ambassador Guy Ledoux commended the support of the academe through the Liceo de Cagayan University and the Film Development Council of the Philippines which have endeavoured to bring Cine Europa in Mindanao.

Admission to the film screenings is free on a firstcome, first-served basis.

Now on its 16th year, As Cine Europa is reaching more Filipinos than ever before with screenings right across the country. With its expansion from three to six cities last year, attendance has increased by a quarter from 29,000 in 2011 to 36,500 in 2012.

With numerous award winning European movies including romantic musicals, wartime movies, historical dramas, family comedies and even world class documentaries, there really is something for everyone at Cine Europa 16.

The film festival opened at the Shangri-La Plaza in Manila and moved to Baguio, Iloilo and Cebu. Cine Europa will then move on to Cinematheque Davao City from 15 to 20 October.

Cagayan de Oro Embarks on an Investment Overdrive Visioning Lures Private Sector to take the Lead

In an unprecedented move to conduct a visioning session with Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno, the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) headed by its Chairman Pipo Nuňez and President Gil Buenaventura, hosted a round table no-holds-barred executive powwow Thursday September 26th at the Executive Conference Hall of DBP in Makati City.

Par ticipated by select technocrats from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Center for Research and C o m m u n i c a t i o n s (C RC ) , s t a ke h ol d e r s w i t h p u r e intentions took turns to engage the Mayor on his 8-point agenda for CDO development.

Also present during the session were executives from the private sector, notably Dr. Walter Brown of Xavier Estates, Eric Canoy of RMN Networks, Lito Cruz of IBC TV13, Manny Eng Hua, Rey Fuentes, Roy Sobrecarey a nd Ra m id P. Gu alber to representing Dra. Ochie Pelaez of Paseo del Rio, as well as the city planning officer, and Kagayanons based in Manila. Various business

models were put forward, i.e. a marketing approach to branding equity to spur positivity, investor-friendly and safe settlements, strategic integration of overlapping and shared economic catchment basins to create synergistic development, and harnessing the critical role of the city as a big brother to the Northern Mindanao business corridor and gateway to the south.

W h ile Mayor Moreno challenged the private sector to do more and take the lead in building a better city on a livework-play environment, DBP Chairman Nuňez expressed unequivocal support for the city as their portfolio mirrors t he nat ional gover n ment prog rams par ticularly on regional development.

Aya-aya Falls Aya-aya Falls is a body of falling water situated in the heart of Lugait.

It connects two barangays and is located approximately 73 km. west of the city. A rich picture of green forest surrounds the whole place.

In reaching this place, an individual would pass through foot trails up to an elevated place with a pool of water. A few climbs will transcend him to the place.

The place where the falls is located would be a perfect avenue for trekking and mountain climbing, giving the thrill of adventure and adrenaline rush. The water counterpart is also a good place for free diving, extreme plunging, swimming, fishing and boating.

The location is also a refreshing area inviting anyone for a picnic with family or friends.

Mainit Hot Spring Mainit Hot Spring is a spring located in Barangay Tugasnon of Alubijid town. Alubijid is one of the municipalities of Misamis Oriental which natural beauty is not disturbed and well-preserved. This is maybe the reason why such beautiful spots still exist.

Mainit Hot Spring provides ample relaxation to its visitors through its hot water, recharging both body and mind. The hot water having its sulphur content and temperature reaches 32 degree Celsius offers a natural body massage for tired fellows.

The place where the spring lies also enticed mountaineers and campers alike to visit it. Mountainclimbing, hiking and trekking activities can also be done in the place.

Alubijid can be reached through riding jeepneys or buses. It will take more than one hour to reach Alubijid proper and to Mainit Hot Spring.

Agutayan White Island Agutayan White Island is an isle located off the coast of the Municipality of Jasaan. It is made up of 5000 square meters fine, white sand mounted in the middle of 3-hectare marine sanctuary.

Bordering it is a shallow and clear water, a perfect location for various recreations like swimming, diving and snorkelling alike. It also contains amazing marine creations like Agukoy crabs which are abundant in the area.

The beauty and richness of these natural wonders invite tourists to come and explore its beauty and offerings.

Tourism is one of the priorities in the administration of Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano. It is a critical element in his quest for economic growth of the province. In this way, resources will be generated and at the same time, biodiversity will be preserved.

In the recently concluded Explore MisOr Tourism Summit, the provincial government has identified a number of tourist destinations and as well, potential ones needing improvement. Hence, they introduced sites spotted for future development.

The fall’s meandering streams falling along the rocks and stones would give anyone a good and soothing sounds. The place is good for activities like swimming and diving. It also consists of earthy and mountainous area where mountainclimbing and trekking is highly inviting.

In getting there, one can ride a bus or jeepney going to the town of Jasaan and a few minutes ride of habal-habal or motorcycle will take him to Barangay San Isidro where Sagpulon Falls is situated.

Flight 387 Shrine Flight 387 Shrine can be found at the jump-off point at Mt. Lumot, particularly between the adjacent mountain ranges of Gingoog City and Municipality of Claveria. The shrine was erected in remembrance of the crash victims of plane McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 owned by Cebu Pacific Air in Mount Sumagaya in Claveria, Misamis Oriental on February 1998.

In the present, the crash site is also been made for an area of exhilarating eco-adventure activities which attract a number of tourists. Such activities include hiking, camping and mountain climbing. It also offers a venue for bird-watching.

Civoleg Falls Civoleg Falls is a ladder falls located at Barangay Lunotan of City of Gingoog. It also has an amazing pool found to be a 20-feet deep wonder. The place is so cool and refreshing encouraging everyone to

have wanderlust through it and enjoy a relaxing getaway offered by the place.

The location is a best venue for outings, escapades and adventure. In it, groups and even individuals who love adventures and fun can have a picnic and swimming and diving activities.

Green forest and giant rocks also surround the whole area. Anyone can also have a cliff-climbing adventure on its surrounding mountains and hiking escapades to nearby areas.

Alibuag Cold Spring Medina is one of the municipalities in the province where various tourist destinations can be found. An example of this is the Alibuag Cold Spring which is located in the heart of it.

The spring can be found after a 15-minute travel from the town proper. The long length of time would be spent mostly from 200 meters of uphill climbing to reach the area.

The landscape of the area depicts its natural beauty. The open place give out the natural and crystal clear water which becomes chilly-cold along with the breeze that swayed through the surroundings. The calm water is said to be natural coming from the mountain. The water source is a 100-square meter pools which depth ranges from four to seven feet.

There are cottages in the sides of the spring. Trips in group like families and friends are highly encouraged to visit the spring. The benefit of enjoyment and delight is certain in Alibuag Cold Spring.

Anyone interested to come in the place can ride a bus going to Medina.

Usually, it will take two to three hours of travel going in the town.

Yes. It’s more fun in Misamis Oriental! Travellers need not to travel to distant places just to have relaxation and get-away from the busy traffic here in the city. 100 days: An ‘acid test,’ Emano

GINGOOG City, Misamis Oriental––Although developing tourism took center stage, the alleged corruption of the previous administration became the major topic of the provincial governor’s 100day report here on Tuesday.

Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano told a jam packed

crowd of over 1,000 at the Lugod Gym when he delivered his 100-day office report since he assumed the gubernatorial post of Misamis Oriental last July 1, 2013 that his administration has been “burning candles” to overcome the current financial malady of the province.

“My 100 days in office was an ‘acid test’ of an

infantile administration marred by alleged corruption and financial mismanagement of the previous administration,” Emano said accompanied by a power point presentation of the financial venue of his 100 days in the office report as a symbolic gesture of bringing his administration closer to the people of Misamis Oriental.

MISAMIS ORIENTAL – Vice Governor Joey G. Pelaez in partnership with Children’s International Philippines made another round of books distribution in three (3) schools of Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental last October 2, 2013.

This books donation is a testament of the continuing advocacy of the Vice Governor for the improvement and supplementation of educational programs and/or materials in the province of Misamis Oriental.

Emano told the crowd that the development of the tourism industry would become the flagship of his administration armed with the pessimism of transforming Misamis Oriental as the tourism hub in Northern Mindanao in the coming years.

“It would excite the people of Misamis Oriental if they will learn that the two-day tourism summit held last week in Medina was excessively successful,” Emano said.

He said that the term “excessively successful” was an exaggerated figure of speech that aptly described the positive responses of stakeholders in the tourism industry during the two-day summit.

“The province of Misamis Oriental got the commitment of support amounting to over P100 million from the private and public sectors, notably, the Department of Tourism and the “Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise Zone,” Emano added.

He said that TIEZA has already committed P 48 million for the initial development of bankable tourist sites in the province aside from including Misamis Oriental in the P 17 billion budget for the development of various tourist spots in the country next year.

“While we were extremely happy with the commitments and pledges from the private and government sectors to push for the development of the province’s tourism industry, we were also equally sad that the previous administration has drained the provincial coffers to bankruptcy,” Emano added.

He said that an audit report of the Commissions on Audit for the 20122013 confirmed that Gov. Oscar Moreno has left the province reeling in debts, a financial shortage of over P 500 million, and the accountability of various equipment and properties owned by the provincial government.

“We have been collating evidence to build a strong case against those who have plundered the province of Misamis Oriental. We have started the filing of initial graft charges against those be believed were accountable,” Emano said.

The more than 1,000 contracts and job order workers who were left unpaid for more than P 14 million for several months have already received their salaries albeit on a staggered basis, he said. The provincial government has stopped the renewal of contract workers except those

working in hospitals whose services were urgently needed. After three-month in office, the province has gradually recovered from the financial crisis.

“The province was able to improve its revenue income to over P 200 million in just three months and was able to save over P 100 million after paying its obligations during the same period,” Emano said. “ We h a v e s u r v i v e d those trying days where, in the beginning, we saw only darkness,” Emano.

Now, after surmounting the crucial 100-day, “I am glad to report to the people of Misamis Oriental that we have accomplished more than we have expected and, once again, assured of brighter future ahead of us,” Emano said.
