DAVAO City -- Illegal drug charges have been filed Tuesday before the City Prosecution Office (CPO) against a couple caught with almost PHP500,000 worth of shabu at the checkpoint of Task Force Davao.

BFP-Samal trains kiddie fire marshals ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL, Davao del Norte -- The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in collaboration with the local government unit (LGU) and the Department of Education (DepEd) here is conducting a fire prevention training to selected elementary students here in preparation for the Fire Prevention Month in March.

About 43 Grade two students will come from Villarica Central Elementary with 13 students, Peñaplata Elementary School with 15 students and Kaputian Central Elementary School with 15. The training will include fire prevention awareness and fire drills.

Leading the activity are personnel from Samal LGU, DepEd, BFP retired chief Insp. Valentino Israel and newly appointed city Fire Marshal Insp. Christian Cena.

FO1 Rollylex Palacio Orosio, chief plans and training’s of BFP Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), said the training is a nationwide activity and their group was the first to conduct the training in Region 11.

Orosio, who is also the training facilitator, added that the initiative is based on the Fire Code of the Philippines which clearly states that BFP can coordinate with the DepEd on

institutionalizing the kiddie and junior fire marshal program in all pre-school, elementary and secondary education levels.

“The trained Grade 2 students who will be Grade 3 in the next school year will help us conduct the training for the next batch, for this will become an annual activity,” Orosio added.

He also said that the junior marshals will help in disseminating fire prevention tips to their fellow students as well as their communities.

The BFP record showed that Samal Island recorded a total of 42 fire incidents with the estimated total damage of PHP5 million in 2015.

Orosio appealed to the residents to be responsible in using electricity and avoid substandard devices which can be the common cause of fire.

He also advised the public to properly dispose their candles especially during brownouts and at the same time check their electrical wirings to prevent fire.

CAGAYAN de Oro City -- The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) is winding up its seminar-workshop on Opinion Polls and Elections: (Making Media Coverage Count ), today at VIP

Hotel. The seminar started Wednesday, February 24.

With support from Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) and in collaboration with Marketing and Opinion Research Society of the Phils., Inc. (MORES), the seminar-workshop (held

nationwide) aims to change the narrative of media’s election coverage.

Member newspapers of the PPI and other invited media practitioners tackled various issues that have been taking place since time immemorial, such as “media’s

penchant to approach their stories superficially, focusing on personalities rather than policies or issues.

Elections are treated like sports events, pitting opponents against each other, with little regard for substantive issues, said

Some 40 members of the Club’s old guards are expected to join guests and visitors in witnessing tonight’s induction ceremony.

It could be remembered that on the 2nd Saturday, this month, the Cagayan de Oro Press Club held its

annual elections. It was a hotly-contested election where the COPC old guards battled it out with some incumbents and new faces.

Of the 104 members that voted, Jaudian got 53 votes.

Charges of vote-buying by some have been aired with the confirmations of some members that it really took place. This prompted Jaudian and company to have their own oath-taking as a sign of protest that they are against “dirty politicking” in the Club.

Cheers to the young essayists, poets and story tellers from Muntinlupa and environs. They received last week their appropriate recognition during the 10th Cesar S. Tiangco Memorial Literary Awards.

The young writers were chosen from high school and college student participants from the cities of Muntinlupa, Las Pinas, Pasay, Taguig, Pasig, Makati and the Municipality of Pateros.

The Cesar S. Tiangco Memorial Literary Awards annually gives cash prizes and medals to winners in the following categories: essay, poem, and short story.

Teacher-endorsers of the awardees receive certificates of appreciation.

All winning entries will be published in Tiangco Memorial Literary Awards Anthology 2011-2015. An earlier anthology published the winners from 2007 to 2010.

The annual award was conceived by his former students to honor the memory of Cesar Sioson Tiangco, the pioneer principal of the Muntinlupa National High School. Tiangco served as principal from 1945 up to 1976 . He was a writer and novelist. His early works were published in the pre-war Sun Tribune; Agricultural-CommercialIndustrial Life, Philippine Free Press, Mr. and Ms. and Women’s Magazine.

Know the ethics of journalism to gain respectability, honor and dignity. Be educated, aware and straightforward at all times. Never use vulgar or immoral words to describe someone. Even prostitutes or convicted felons have rights too. If we cannot behave well, journalism is definitely not our field. Better plant kamote or bananas and live happily.

Our right is not absolute, it has limitation and we are covered by law on libel.

Never be malicious in your comments.. Do not use the media as a tool to demolish people for personal interest or gain. We can go to jail.

There are ways to escape libel if you know. Be aware that the elements of libel are identity, malice and libelous materials. Once the court established that we go beyond these elements, we are finished.

Read books on libel.

Better still consult a lawyer and be guided accordingly.

Or go back to college - - in the school of journalism and know how to handle the job well with confidence and righteousness. Journalism is a 4-year course that would

make us stand vertically. To the old adage “ignorance of the law excuses no one” is definitely in place.

If facing a criminal case for libel, attend sessions and never be over confident.

Trust your lawyers and pay him for his legal services unless he volunteers to defend you. When I was charged with 52 cases of libel, 17 lawyers came to my rescue and I got acquitted after five years of legal skirmishes. I learned a lesson on top of those I earned in college.

Many of us were very unfortunate, they were not slapped with libel suits but they died with their boots on. They were assassinated some of them right inside their homes before the terrified eyes of their children.

Until now our profession is still the most dangerous ever on the surface of this planet. A barrel of a gun is pointed at us 24 hours a day by critics and hired assassins and if we fail, we fall - - six feet below the ground where only our families will grieve for us I am not giving you lectures on journalism because I assumed you know it even better than me. I am just reminding you of our posture and the job we handle. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder

with any citizens, no more no less. We are not higher than them much less entitled to better privileges or rights. A sidewalk vendor or any laborer may even stand taller sometimes if their business is good. But people expect us to be highly educated, cultured and professionalized.

One more thing I wish to impart is the issue of corruption in our sector.

Some interested persons may give you funding to demolish their enemy or rival or whatever. Never be tempted to accept their money and try to prove you are not vulnerable to repercussions. The old joke “your foolishness will go back to your body” is undying and alive that we must be aware.

Going Through Hot Water Think a minute…

“A tea bag isn’t worth mu ch u nt i l it’s b e e n through some hot water.” There’s a saying in boxing: “Everybody’s got a plan—until they’ve been hit!” Sooner or later, life is going to hit and knock you down. Whether you get back up or not is your choice. Almost all people’s successes are built on their former failures. A very successful man was asked if he had ever failed.

He answered: “Only in life.” The fact is, even after we’ve been knocked down we can still use our past mistakes and failures to build a bridge to our success.

You know that you’re the only one who can kill your dream by quitting.

Remember that just falling in the water is not what drowns you; it’s staying down there that does. Just like kites fly high because the wind pushes against them, so problems that oppose you can actually help you succeed, if you choose to believe and use them that way.

There was a man who was the only survivor from a shipwreck. He drifted to an uninhabited island where he built a hut for his shelter. One evening after he returned from searching for food, he found his little hut on fire.

Early the next morning he awoke to find a ship that had come in during the night. When the captain came on shore he told the man: “We saw your smoke signal so we came to rescue you.” Everything this man owned and valued in his hut had to be destroyed before he could be saved.

Sometimes our Maker even uses our pain to get our attention, so we can learn our most important lessons for living well and wisely. So why not ask Jesus Christ to take charge and lead you through the hot water you’re in now?

He’s the only one who can help you change your pain and problems into peace and prosperity for you and your family. The choice is yours.

SIBAGAT, Agusan del Sur -- The Department of Agriculture-Bottom-up Budgeting (BUB) Program officially turned over an P11 million Farm-toMarket Road (FMR) with 200-meter Hanging FootBridge linking Barangays Poblacion and Tagoyango, Sibagat town here last February 17.

“The farmers including barangay residents are very grateful for the newlyconstructed hanging footbridge. This project will help us farmers reduce the transportation cost of our agricultural products at least at P1 per kilo. The residents in Barangays Poblacion and Kioya were also relieved as the bridge will enable them easier access to safety and assistance in times of calam-

ity and emergency,” said Fe M. Sarabia, chairperson of Tagoyango Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

Implemented by DA-13, the project was made possible through the partnership of the local government and the Civil Society Organization (CSO). LGU-Sibagat contributed P2 million as counterpart for the undertaking.

ZAMBOANGA City -C ombine d Phi lippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Army Special Forces have safely rescued 24 people on Wednesday hours after two small boats collided off the coast of Basilan.

Lt. Senior Grade Jimmy Berbo, Zamboanga Coast Guard Station commander,

said 16 of the 24 people rescued were passengers while the remaining eight were crew of M/L Shermina Express.

Berbo said they were rescued around 5:20 a.m.

Wednesday near Lampinigan Island, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.

Berbo said investigation

showed that M/L Shermina was navigating along the Malamawi channel around 2:30 a.m. when a small boat locally known as “jungkung” bumped her at the rear portion.

He said M/L Shermina Express, which was carrying 24 people and some cargoes, was bound for Siasi, Sulu at

the time of the incident.

He said M/L Shemina Express incurred damaged while the jungkung with unidentified people aboard sped off after the collision.

ZAMBOANGA City -– The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) announced that the water rationing scheme will continue due to the dwindling supply

brought about by the El Niño phenomenon.

Engr. Efren Salvacion, ZCWD maintenance department manager, disclosed on Wednesday that to date,

this city’s water elevation is measured at 73.8 meters at its diversion dam, which is lower by 0.4 meters from the normal level of 74.20 meters.

Salvacion said the water volume has also dropped by 36,000 cubic meters (cu. m.) from 100,000 cu. m to 64,000 cu. m. daily since the water elevation at the diversion dam is below normal.

Salvacion hopes the water level will not decline further “so that we will have no problem in supply.”

The ZCWD has started the implementation of rationing on January 8 when water level at source dropped lower than the normal elevation due to the prolonged drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

The rationing was implemented to enable the ZCWD to supply water daily to its more than 57,000 active concessionaires.

The ZCWD gets 80 percent of its supply from surface water through the Tumaga River, making it vulnerable to the elements such as the prolonged dry spell.

AS a nation and even as educators, we are proud that our kids and teenagers excel in sports competitions abroad. Aside from academic excellence, this is one way of showcasing our talents to other nationalities. Batang Pinoy is the grassroots program of the Department of Education to hone the talents of these potentials.

Note for Teachers: The Importance of Career Development

Teaching is a career that needs constant development, especially if you started young. This is not to say that young teachers do not have a place in the educational system. On the contrary, the Philippine education system needs more young teachers with innovative and creative mindsets. By constant development, I meant to focus on the importance of career development.

Like the finest things in life, teachers need to keep growing and improving.

This is the best way to get better at what they do. This is what they need to accept if they want to advance in their chosen profession.

Learning, after all, does not stop after one receives his or her diploma. And this is why there are regular seminars and workshops specifically intended for teachers.

Career development, also often referred to as professional development, is important because: • It helps teachers and educators become better at what they do. They gain more knowledge about their profession.

• It helps release positive energy; the kind that

you get when you are offered something new and exciting.

Excitement is important for professional growth because it is a major factor in pushing one to work better and achieve more.

• It helps teachers and educators understand and adapt to new ideas, techniques, methods, tools, strategies, and technologies.

Teachers can get all these when they participate in seminars, workshops, and trainings. There are some teachers, however, who want to supplement these outings with their own activities that can help assure them of proper career development.

Here are some tips that any teacher will find helpful in the development of his or her career.

1. Reading is an important learning process. A person who reads well will have good comprehension skills. For teachers, reading means updating one’s self with the latest trends in learning and teaching.

Learning does not end when one leaves college or the university; it is a continuous process. So, whatever ideas, techniques, theories, or methods were taught in education classes can be constantly updated. Thus, teachers must find time to read – journals, books, studies, blog posts, and whatever

written material relevant to their teaching career is available.

2. Of course, reading is not enough. Teachers need to practice what they read and learn. This will help identify which of the new learning will work and return positive results. Teachers who want to see their career fully develop should not be afraid to try out new things. The trick is to take in something new and adapt it to the classroom environment the teacher and then, once proven effective, share it with fellow teachers.

3. Teachers need to find time to improve their knowledge of the subject matter they are teaching.

As such, English teachers are encouraged to read and research about or enroll in language-related courses; science teachers should be updated with the latest in scientific research and studies.

These are three very simple steps that can help reinforce the importance of career development.

However, these can only be carried out if a teacher fully understands why there is a need to do such; why it is essential to develop his or her career.

Teens use technologies in many means, like using computer for their school stuffs and researches, using of mobile phones to communicate with their families and most common is using the online world or the social media for entertainment purposes.

Most of the parents find online world and social media as distraction towards a child’s education. Parents think that when their child exert more time in exposing their selves in the online world, they will likely get more disadvantages. Yes, using computer will help their child for faster access for information for their school matter. On the other side, online world and social media cater their children to the harm that they less expected.

There are many reasons why parents should monitor their child in exposing their selves too much on the online world. The most

common problem is the cyberbullying case. Bullying doesn’t happen only in school or in the real world, but it also happen in the social media. It has bigger impact to children who are bullied in the online world, for it spread faster and will be known by many in just a second of time. Second, it will be easy for predators or the bad people to access their new victims through social media. There are many cases today that harassment happens in the social media. Lastly, exerting more time on the social media will lessen the time to have a personal bonding with their families. Children today often forgot to spend time with their family because of the online world, and that’s the sad fact of today’s generation.

To avoid these nega-

tive and bad things that might happen with your children, parents should reinforce their selves in monitoring and educate their children to how to socialize online in a safe way. One is parents should set rule with their children upon using the computer.

Examples, children should use computer which their presence is visible to their parents, so that their parents can check on them time to time. Second, parents should have an access with their child’s social accounts.

Like creating an account that will connect to their child’s social account. Most importantly, is to educate and teach their children on the pros and cons of using social media.

It is not bad to let your children be exposed with the techy world, but parents should be careful enough to manage and check their child’s doings in the online world.

EXPLANATORY NOTE In compliance to Section 212 of Republic Act No. 7160, also known as the Local Government Code of 1991, local assessors shall undertake a general revision of real property assessment every three years. This assessment will made as basis of the real property tax. However, before the general revision of property assessment is made, there shall be prepared a schedule of fair market values by the local assessors for the different classes of real property situated in the local government unit concerned for enactment by ordinance of Sanggunian. Hence: PROVINCIAL ORDINANCE NO. 2016-11 Be it ordained by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Camiguin, in session assembled: Section 1. TITLE. This Ordinance shall be known as “AN ORDINANCE APPROVING THE NEW SCHEDULE OF MARKET VALUES OF REAL PROPERTY IN THE PROVINCE OF CAMIGUIN”.

Section 5. MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS. 1. As a general rule, 100% base value per square meter for urban commercial, industrial and residential lands shall be applied to all lands within the first strip of 20 meters on commercial and industrial sections of zones, and within the 20 meters on residential sections or zones fronting asphalted or concretes streets or roads.

Section 6. SUPPLETORY DOCUMENT. The book prepared by the Office of the Provincial Assessor as indorsed by the Honorable Governor to the Sanggunian Panlalawigan of Camiguin, entitled: “SCHEDULE OF MARKET VALUES, 2014-2015, CAMIGUIN,” shall serve as a Suppletory Document to this Ordinance.

2. Lands beyond the standard depth of 20 meters for commercial and industrial lands, and 20 meters for residential lands, if any, shall be valued 80% for the 2nd strip, 60% for the third strip and 40% of the based value fixed for the street or roads fort the reaming area, Provide, however, that in the case the parcel of land abutting two streets or roads on two sides with the different base values stripping and valuations thereof shall be base on the principal street or road with the higher base value, but no lower than the schedule of value of the other street.

Section 7. REPEALING CLAUSE. Any provision of Ordinances which runs counter to the provisions of this Ordinance is deemed repealed or modified accordingly.

3. A reduction of 20%, shall be applied from the based value fixed for lands along gravel, earth or dirt, and proposed streets or roads, in similar manner, if the street or roads and/or sections thereof are subsequently improved or constructed, the appraisal and assessment of the same shall be adjusted accordingly.

4. For low and sunken areas of the land, a reduction from the base value per square meter may be allowed due to the cost of filling and compaction to bring the same at par with the adjoining developed lots, provided, however that such reduction will, in no case, exceed 30% of the base value thereof.

Section 8. EFFECTIVITY. This Ordinance shall take effect after compliance of Section 212 of the Local Government Code of 1991 on publication requirement.

5. Adjustment value of the frontage shall be added to the valuation of all commercial lots fronting streets or roads. The same is derived by multiplying the length of frontage in lineal meters by 50% of the unit base value thereof.

6. Corner influence value of 15% of the base value shall be added to the valuation of lots situated at the corner of the two street or roads. Provide, however, that if the streets or roads have different base value, the higher base value shall be used in the computation thereof.

7. Vacant or idle lands located in a purely residential area, shall be classified as residential. If such land is located in a purely commercial area, the same shall be classified as commercial. Mixed residential-commercial area the same shall be classified according to the class which is more predominant.

8. As far as property applicable, this schedule of base market values shall be controlling, but where the property to be assessed is of a kind not classified in this schedule or any for which a value is not herein fixed, it shall be appraised and assessed at its current and fair market value, independently of this schedule.

The Department of Trade and Industry Misamis Oriental Provincial Office seeks to continue it sterling performance in 2015 to the current year and beyond.

Foremost among its most notable accomplishments for 2015 were in the City Municipalities and Cities Index (CMCI) ratings where it sought to put both Misamis Oriental and its capital city of Cagayan de Oro in the Top 10 of their respective categories.

The CMCI rated Misamis Oriental as the 2nd Most Competitive Province in the country while Cagayan de Oro ranked sixth among the Highly Urbanized Cities evaluated.

Under the Shared Services Facility (SSF) program where industries are introduced to new appropriate technologies through the provision of production equipment, its SSF to the Linabu Agrarian MultiPurpose Cooperative was cited as the SSF with the Most “Ramdam” effect.

In Business Development, Misamis Oriental not only became the first operational Negosyo Center nationwide, but reaped another accolade as the Negosyo Center with the most number of trainings conducted (175) for 2015 Nationwide.

In fact of all targets set by the office itself for 2015, it attained its goal in virtually all categories, exceeding 10 of the 12 metrics.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) development and promotion remained high in the unit’s agenda, resulting in PhP 434-million of domestic sales generated; 1,106 MSMEs assisted (vs. 950 target or 116% actual); 33 SSFs were established (vs.

28 target or 118% actual); 8,260 jobs generated (vs.

8,252 target), and 24 MSMEs availed of loans (vs. 11 target, or 218% actual).

DLSU, Steag ink partnership on R&D Manila - De La Salle University (DLSU) and energy-firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) are collaborating on Research and Development (R&D) aimed at scaling-up the use of power generation by-products and offer alternatives to the growing challenges in the country’s construction industry.

The R&D partnership will explore, among others, appropriate applications of coal combustion by-products to further optimize the environmental, economic and social benefits apart from its current use in the cement industry.

“It is our desire to look further into the other product applications apart from existing current use in the

cement industry in order to bring further more social, environmental and economic benefits to our local communities” says SPI President and CEO Dr. Bodo Goerlich.

At present, the coal-combustion by product of SPI’s 210 MW (net) coal-fired power plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental is mostly used up as raw material in the cement industry. Aside from that, SPI’s host municipality is also using them as replacement material in producing bricks and hollow-blocks through the LGU-initiated Villanueva Fire Bricks Making Project.

“I believe that the reuse of this by-product has significantly reduced energy costs associated with mining virgin materials from

the earth and thereby cut back on greenhouse gas emissions” Dr. Goerlich explained.

“Using this by product to replace conventional materials not only conserves natural resources, but also improves the strength, durability and quality of construction materials” Dr. Goerlich added.

For his part, DLSU President Br. Raymundo B. Suplido cited the R&D partnership as a significant milestone in the university’s thrust of helping find opportunities to develop innovative solutions for technological and industrial challenges in support of the country’s development goals.

DSWD turns 65, highlights partners’ contribution Butuan City -- In the regional celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) which happened on February 19, 2016 at Almont Hotel’s Inland Resort, this city, Field Office Caraga highlighted the significant contributions of its partners and stakeholders in the implementation of various social protection programs and services.

His message emphasized the essence of the Convergence strategy and its high importance in excellently delivering the programs and services of DSWD. He encouraged the present partners and stakeholders to continue their support.

Gudmalin also commended Brigoli for her leadership and cited the various awards that were reaped by DSWD-Caraga in the previous year, highlighting the ISO certification.

“I share with your pride of being the FIRST Field Office of DSWD to be ISO 9001: 2008 certified,” he said.

The Challenging Roles of a Public Schools District Supervisor

Public Schools District Supervisor (PSDS) is the key leader in our educational system. He is responsible of carrying out the district vision and mission. Public Schools District Supervisor plays integral roles in making schools in his district function smoothly. He is involved in all aspects of the school’s operation. He is the leader responsible in providing leadership in the development and implementation of all

educational programs and projects in all schools in the district. He further plays a vital role in achieving the government’s aim to provide quality basic education to all school children.

It is evident that the quest for quality education has resulted in a number of initiatives which have made significant demands on the Public Schools District Supervisor to transform leadership towards improved school performance.

Public Schools District Supervisor has to face new challenges brought forth by rationalization law. PSDS monitors the implementations of all DepEd programs and projects. Furthermore, the birth of the K to 12 Curriculum which entails a huge change of the educational system of the country most especially in the implementation of the Senior High School.

Chapter 1 Section No. 7, Letter D, Paragraph 2 no. 1-2 of Republic Act No. 9155, states that the Public Schools District Supervisor shall be respon-

sible for providing professional and instructional advice and support to the school heads and teachers/ facilitators of schools and learning centers in the district or cluster thereof; Curricula supervision; and performing other functions as may be assigned by proper authorities. Thus, the success and failure of the school and district operations depends of the kind of PSDS it has in the district.

It simply means that the life of the Public Schools Dist r ic t Sup er v is or is packed with challenges.

Health is a combination of physical, mental, and social well being.

These play a vital role to individual’s success especially the academic performance of the schoolchildren. Some failed to perform well in the school because of

the factors that hinders them to do so. One of them is for being malnourished.

The Department of Education implemented School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) to a d d re ss ma lnut r it i on problem among public school children. This aims to enhance health and education status of

the children. It also targeted the beneficiaries to have normal nutritional status.

Salawagan Central Elementary School is one of the schools nationwide that feeds malnourished schoolchildren. The said feeding started last November 3, 2015, .There are twenty-four malnourished children from PreSchool to grades III receive feeding in the Home Economics building every day. Mrs. Edna T. MAG-

DAYO, MT I, together with the parents operated the program for 120 days. Delicious and nutritious foods will serve daily because it is mandated by the Dep Ed to provide and give such foods to the recipients.

The active principal Mr. Vicente F. Garciano, ESP II together with the teachers supports the program for the betterment of the schoolchildren.

What matters most is the manner how these challenges are being dealt with.

It simply requires a paradigm shift, from the traditional way of management.

It also requires change, collegiality, teamwork, and even efficiency and effectiveness in whatever level of the educational system.

These new challenges require PSDS to take on new leadership skills in quality development and quality assurance. They also highlight the need for more focused and systematic leadership training and development programs to

enhance the quality of leadership they already possess embedded with courage and determination.

The government through the Department of Education should take into account the training needs of the Public Schools District Supervisors to fully capacitate them towards the full implementation of all DepEd programs and projects for them to be able to favorably embrace the new challenges as it captures the whole educational system.

ZAMBOANGA City -- The National Housing Authority (NHA) and local government marked the 30th EDSA-1 anniversary with the distribution of 233 permanent shelters worth PHP137.7 million to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in this city.

The IDPs are among the families displaced during the 21-day September 2013 Zamboanga siege.

The 233 houses on stilts, which were constructed in Barangay Mariki, are among the 642 permanent shelters to be built in the area through the Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and Reconstruction (Z3R) project.

“We want to let the people know that we are building back a better Zamboanga, and today, as we celebrate the EDSA-1 revolution, it is also a freedom day for them (IDPs),” said Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar.

The six housing units are among the 79 permanent shelters to be built in Ayer Village.

According to a hand out graciously provided to this guest by Vice President Tony Uy (who did a splendid job hosting the event with Secretary General Ricky Go), “lion dance troupes from the Chinese martial arts schools or Chinese guilds and associations visit houses and shops of the Chinese community to perform the traditional cai qing (literally plucking the greens) whereby the lion plucks the auspicious green vegetables like lettuce hung on a pole or placed on a table in front of the premises.”

The “greens” (qing) are tied together with a red envelope containing money and may also include auspicious fruits like oranges. In Chinese cai (to pluck) also sounds like the Chinese words for “vegetable” and “fortune.”

The lion will dance

and approach the “green” and “red envelope” like a curious cat, to “eat the green” and “spit” it out but keep the “red envelope” which is the reward for the lion troupe. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to the business.

Besides the production numbers, the officers of the MOFCCCII led

by President Greg also distributed the traditional “red envelopes” to teachers from Oro Grace Christian School and Kong Hua School.
