Another Oro cop in ‘drug buy bust’ By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Barely two weeks after agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) collared a policewoman for alleged drug trafficking, another police officer fell into the drug net, the PDEA said on Tuesday. PDEA Regional Director, Emerson L. Margate, identified the police officer as PO1 Darwin Maputi, 35, of Indahag, Cagayan De Oro City along with another suspect identified as Arsad Ayunan, of Marawi City. Margate said that the PDEA operatives nabbed the suspects during a “buy-bust” operation in a downtown barangay in Cagayan De Oro City last Sunday afternoon. Recovered from the suspects was one gram of dried marijuana leaves and about 5 grams of white substance believed to be “Shabu” (Methampethamine Hydrochloride) with an estimated street value amounting to P 40,000. in the region had a dialogue with Duterte Friday. The mayor also acts as chairman of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC). Hanimay Suazo, secretary general of Karapatan, said that “militarization and righs abuses in the region are happening on an almost daily basis and we trust that Mayor Duterte, as the current chair of RPOC, could help the victims.” During the dialogue, various cases of militarization in the region were shared by the victims and

their families including the harassment of paramilitary group Alamara in Kapalong, Davao del Norte last September; forced evacuation of Indigenous Peoples and red-tagging of pablo survivors in Baganga, Davao Oriental, and the killing of Bernardo Clarion, Sr. in barangay Talisay, Mandug, Davao City last Oct 1, 2014. Duterte said that he would personally visit the areas to get the side of the military and to start the investigation.

He added that he will set another dialogue inviting all concerned parties including the different Infantry Divisions mentioned by the victims. “If on ly t he admin [Aquino administration] pursued the peace process to the CPP-NDFP-NPA, these [human rights violations] will not happen,” Duterte said. Meanwhile, Pastor Sarly Templado of Exodus for Justice and Peace presented to Duterte during the dialogue the request of support

for their peace education campaign to be launched in the city. Templado explained that this would help in informing the public of the peace process between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). Templado said that the launching, to be held next month, will invite members of peace advocates and families of human rights victims from different provinces in the region.(davaotoday.com)

NPA casualties recovered in series of encounters

A total of three bodies and 11 high powered firearms were recovered by the Army’s 73 Infantry Battalion troops in a series of encounters the lawless armed group “NPA” in Malita, Davao del Sur, starting with a two skirmishes in the morning of October 11, and followed by a 45 minute clash on the afternoon of October 14. A squad of 73rd IB soldiers led by Corporal Luis Lausan reportedly made their way to the hinterlands of Purok Kyawon of, Sitio Tabuducon, Brgy Kinangan, of Malita last Saturday on the responce of persistent reports from civilians of the presence of the armed

group. The group was also reported to extort from civilians, while others reported being ordered to run errands such as buying groceries. The 73rd IB patrol encountered the lawless armed group in the vicinity of the sitio, first at around 8:30 in the morning, then was followed at around 10:30 am, yielding a dead body identified as an alias “Renz”, an M16 assault rifle, ammunition, and two backpacks. Just three days after the two clashes, follow up operations led to another encounter between 73rd IB squad led by Corporal Oliver Ramirez and some

seventeen lawless armed elements in th vicinity of Sitio Tungcan, Barangay Kinangan, Malita, on October 14, in the afternoon, where two bodies were recovered and two were captured. In addition, five M16 rifle, three AK 47, one M653 rifle, and one M14 rifle, Three Improvised Claymore mines, One fuze switch, Two rolls of detonating cord, One hand grenade, four bolos, assorted medicine, 14 backpacks containing personal belongings documents, 10 pairs rain boots, three cellular phones, and three bandoleers were seized The two killed were identified as Mark Bryle Garduque, alias Brian and

an alias Daniel (True name not identified). And the captured were identified as Ritchie C Abrenica alias Pedro and Marilyn A Magpatoc alias Tonyang. Mark Bryle Garduque alias Brian was said to be the groups’s platoon leader. ATIN-AY, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur - Some 50 young leaders from all over the province took over the reign of the provincial government of Agusan del Sur Monday (October 20) to let them get the “feel” of effectively governing the provincial capitol. The one day governance of young provincial leaders is mandated under Article 4, section 46 of Ordinance No. 16, series of 2002 of the Agusan del Sur Children’s Code which states that “every third Monday of October of every year as children’s day of governance/ administration”. A female teener from Bayugan City named Princess Mae Rivera took over the seat of Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza as governor while Nino John Honteveros from Trento became the vice governor replacing Vice Gov. Santi Cane Jr. and presided the Sangguniang Panlalawigan session. All other 15 members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan from District I and District II, including the chiefs of offices of all the departments and divisions in the provincial government were filled in by the young

officials with the real officials serving only as guides. As main sponsor of the Monday flag raising ceremony held at the Naliyagan Cultural Center, the elected and appointed young provincial officials and chiefs of offices with all the participants of the two-day children’s congress held from October 18-19 were introduced to all who attended from the national and local government offices. Cane who delivered the message of Gov. Plaza said the children in Agusan del Sur are very lucky to be given the chance to explore the world now occupied by the government leaders. He added that since the year 2007 when the provincial government, thru a resolution that he passed, granted scholarship to poor but deserving students, all students who compete in the national and foreign competitions were also given resources and financial support by the government of Agusan del Sur. “That is why, we, the youths of Agusan del Sur, always do our bests when we compete abroad in order to bring the honor back to our province,” little Gov. Princess Mae Rivera said. He said, this program of the provincial government will also help develop the potentials of the youths to

the fullest. Cane added this is one way children can gain self-confidence and with dignity in facing problems that they may encounter in the future. It will also help the youths in discovering where their strengths lie, and to encourage them to pursue those avenues. Cane added that knowing that everyone has his strengths and weaknesses, this program would show that leadership is working to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. “Children’s Governance will let the youths experience something new in dealing with different people with different personalities, while working together in order to achieve one common goal, and that is development. It helps the children realize how important they are in the society even as young as they are, and they can do positive changes that will help the community they live in. Above all, we believe that children are the key to change the world,” Vice Gov. Satiago Cane Jr. said. After the flag raising ceremony and program, the youth leaders were guided to their respective assignments to execute and perform their duties and responsibilities according to the mandate of the office.

BUTUAN City – Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala paid tribute to Filipino farmers and fishers who perform the huge task of feeding a population of 100 million and counting, as the Philippines joined the world in commemorating the annual World Food Day. In a media release, Mac Garcia of the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Alcala, during the celebration at the Liwasang Aurora of Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City, re-affirmed the DA’s commitment to the long-term recovery of farming and fishing communities hit by typhoon Yolanda in central Philippines. “Ang pagdiriwang na ito ay pasasalamat po natin sa pagkakaroon ng higit na kasapatan sa pagkain,” said Alcala, highlighting the attainment of 96 percent sufficiency in rice by end of 2013 from merely 82 percent in 2012. He said closer cooperation between DA and

its stakeholders made this possible, with DA personnel exerting extra efforts to go down to the grassroots to deliver the needed interventions. The DA chief said such favorable condition also encouraged additional and younger entrants into the agri-fishery sector as suggested by separate surveys of the National Statistics Office )NS0) and the DA-Philippine Rural Development Project. Both surveys point to a changing profile of a typical Filipino farmer, with the nearly-complete results of NSO’s Registry of Basic Sectors in Agriculture and DA-PRDP’s baseline survey showing 43 and 47-48 as the average of Filipino food producers, respectively. “At ngayon po, nakikita sa ating pamayanan, may buhay po at kinabukasan sa agrikultura,” he pointed out. But beyond meeting local requirements, he said Filipino food producers and entrepreneurs should aspire for more profitable markets abroad considering that the country has the resources to

No to Emergency Powers, Use Brain Power instead to address energy problems Consumer group People Opposed to unwarranted Electricity Rates (POWER) has emphasized that granting Pres. Aquino emergency powers to address the projected thinning of power reserves during the summer months of 2015 has become unnecessary. What is needed they said, is brain power. Only the brilliant strategies can solve our power woes. The Department of Energy has admitted that the much-hyped power shortage was actually just a deficit in the estimated net reserve equivalent to 21 and 31 megawatts on the first two weeks of April. According to a representative of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) who was at the same hearing, this would translate to a possible 30-minute, once-a-week brownout for those

two weeks. The government do not need to rent or buy additional power as data gathered by the Joint Congressional Power Commission (JCPC) reveal that 1,531 megawatts of additional generating capacity and 1,773 megawatts of saved electricity can be made available by summer of 2015. If a shortfall in the reserve of 21 and 31 megawatts in a week is all that the government aims to fill, there is more than enough supply. Certainly there is no need to grant the President emergency powers to sign negotiated contracts worth P6-P10 billion for 300-500 megawatts, as proposed by Sec. Jericho Petilla. We are glad that the Committee has realized this,” according to POWER Convenor and former

POWER is correct that what the DOE should do now is sit down with the NGCP, ERC and various stakeholders to come up with an action plan to increase the power reserves for next year. What is needed here is brain power, not emergency powers., they added. Indeed it is. In its position paper presented to the House Energy Committee yesterday, POWER proposed the following to address the projected thinning of reserves: 1) Ask the operators of Malampaya and Pagbilao 1 to postpone their maintenance shutdowns; 2) Require private power plants to deliver on their dependable capacities from March-May 2015 as stipulated in their contracts; 3)

Ensure that government-owned plants particularly Malaya and CBK are able to run at their full capacities at that time; 4) Implement an aggressive energy saving and efficiency program for the same period; 5) Require privately-owned generating sets to run during periods of acute shortage to complement existing supply. These options, if properly implemented during the critical months of March and May 2015, will be enough to produce that additional 300-500 MW of reserve power without the President having to invoke emergency powers to enter into expensive, negotiated contracts. Hopefully, this is reliable. The DOE is urged to be assertive and creative in protecting the public interest.

To Differ in Opinion Driving in big cities like Manila is not a joke for beginners. It’s an ordeal, especially during heavy traffic hours. In Manila, I guess, it’s indeed 24/7. One must know where he is going, and which way one is taking. Otherwise, one will end up bumping a wall... But driving a car in small villages where roads are simple is, for neophytes, an enjoyable one. No traffic, no traffic lights, no complicated ways or detours! In the same way, rail roads can make drivers ill at ease when they are in big cities, like in the German Munich i.e., where railways or trams appear like a spider’s cobweb. They go to several directions. No wonder, accidents happened and are still happening. In life we, too, have roads which leads us to several directions. To go to heaven, man’s eternal destiny, one can either choose the shortest road or make detours. Not so many perhaps fall by the way and end up in eternal

damnation. There are some of us, Christians, who take the short-cut road to heaven. This is the road of suffering, of the actual practice of Christian virtues, of serving God and our neighbour. Others take the circuitous road of easy life, thinking that at the end they still have time to amend themselves and lead a good life. This is risky, since no one, not even God Himself, can guarantee that an opportunity will be given at the eleventh hour. Unfortunately, there are still others who prefer to take that opposite road which leads to eternal damnation. So they live, so they die! In John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress’, we read: “Then I saw that there was a way to hell, even from the gates of heaven!” Homo, quo vadis? Having a different opinion is not new. It’s a must. It should be a must! Where ever one stays, people differ in opinion, people disagree, even quarrel, and show

Last week, during one of my several visits in the Bureau of Immigration in Davao City, I really felt ashamed to meet other countrymen or foreigners. MISAMIS Oriental––Provincial Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano on Tuesday has ordered the provincial treasurer to collect about P 206.5 million delinquent real property taxes in the province.

Emano has instructed the provincial treasurer to organize a 2-day conference with all municipal treasurers to map out measures to recover the province’s lost revenues. “The province could have earned some P 87.7 million, representing our share of 35 percent of the

basic tax and 50 percent representing the Special E duc at ion Fund. This amount has the potential of several development projects for our people,” Emano said. Emano said that the conference should outline concrete measures to unify the actions of the respec-

tive municipal treasurers in the enforcement of collection remedies provided by the Local Government Code. “The treasurer’s office is the implementing agency tasked to send tax bills after delinquencies occur. This is why the said office must be more aggressive to col-

lect this tax,” Emano said. It is expected that after the conference, the municipalities will start posting, publishing and ser ving notices to delinquent real property owners. “It is the prerogative of the treasurer’s office to subject to levy and auctioned off these proper-

ties, should owners still refuse to pay their taxes,” Emano said. Emano, however, said that his administration would not implement new taxes this year, but the a revision of the tax base might be adopted while keeping the same taxation rate.

Proposed ordinance requiring malls to provide wheelchairs under study CAGAYAN de Oro Councilor Dante Pajo, chair of the City Council committee on health and sanitation, filed a proposed ordinance requiring shopping malls in the city to provide free wheelchairs to customers or patrons who are persons with disabilities (PWDs). The counci lor cites that PWDs frequent malls to buy the supplies they

need. He said it is imperative that wheelchairs be provided for them inside malls. The prop os ed ordinance imposes fines to the management of shopping malls or shopping centers who fail to comply with its provisions: P3,000 for the first offense, P4,000 for the second offense and P5,000 without prejudice to the suspension of the

business permit for a period of not less than one month for the third and subsequent offenses. On August 26, 2014, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima signed a 16-page resolution ordering order the filing of murder charges against Cagas, Fernandez, Ali Ordaneza and Bado Sanchez. Ordaneza and Sanchez were also involved in the planning. Bedolido was the third journalist killed on the week he died. The first one was Desidario Camangyan from Mati City who was shot dead on June 14, 2010. Camangyan worked as a radio anchor of the Kalayaan Broadcasting Network’s Sunrise FM. The second one was Jovelito Agustin who was killed June 15, 2010 in Ilocos Norte. Agustin was a radio commentator at dzJC Aksyon Radyo Laoag. The Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) during their two day Philippine Export Competitiveness Seminar in the city revealed that a lot of complaints raised to them are result of either importer’s claiming of defective products from exporters or exporters complaining of non-payment of balance shipped to importers. DBM releases P2.1B for DAR’s ‘Tulay’ project The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released P2.1 billion to the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to pay for bridging materials and services to be used in the Tulay ng Pangulo para sa Kaunlarang Pang-Agraryo (TPKP) project. Sourced from the 2014 budget of the Department of Public Works Highways (DPWH), the amount will pay Matiere SAS, a French company that supplied the DPWH with the materiel to be used for the construction, installation, and establishment of the girder-type universal bridges (unibridges). The TPKP unibridges will connect agrarian reform communities and the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP)-covered areas and road networks to main markets nationwide under DAR’s Program Beneficiaries Development (PBD) support services delivery component. Budget Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad said, “This release will jump-start the construction of these unibridges, so that we can link our farmers to commercial areas where they can sell their produce. The goal is to allow our farmers to become more active participants in the local economy, and ultimately, to expand the reach and development of the country’s agriculture industry.” The DAR will be the executing agency for the TPKP project while the DPWH will be building the pre-fabricated modular steel bridges as supplied by the Matiere SASEiffel Consortium. Of the 418 bridges to be constructed, DAR has already endorsed 287, of which 15 have been completed and one is undergoing construction. “ The Program Beneficiaries Development is an important component of DAR’s mandate to help achieve agrarian reform. At the same time, the infrastructure developed by the TPKP will help our agrarian reform beneficiaries as they make themselves more competitive in the agribusiness sector,” Abad said. The DAR and the DPWH also agreed to replace the damaged Desamparados and Tultugan bridges beside the Bohol circumferential road. However, this is subject to the assessment that the replacement bridges will help develop agrarian reform communities and CARPcovered areas within the region. (DBM)

NEDA calls for greater support, opportunities for small farmers Greater support and opportunities for small farmers in the Philippines and Asia are needed to enable agriculture workers to take part in the growth process, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan made this statement in a video message for the 8th International Conference of the Asian Society of Agricultural Economists (ASAE) at the BRAC Center for Development, Savar, Bangladesh on October 15, 2014. Balisacan said that despite their size, the importance of small farms cannot be overlooked, as countries in Asia are among those with an overwhelming panorama of small farms. The latest statistics from the World Census of Ag-

riculture reported that 90 percent of about 428 million agricultural landholdings in Asia are small farms, which are less than two hectares in area. “In Asia, which is home to around 4.4 billion people, including two-thirds of the world’s undernourished, majority of people living in poverty rely on these small farms for food. Thus, potentially, further development of the agriculture sector, specifically the small farms that constitute it, could redound to rural welfare improvement and poverty alleviation,” said Balisacan, who is also NEDA Director-General and ASAE President. He also noted that although the role of agricultural performance in reducing rural poverty may be less clear today that it was during the Green Revolution

period, there are remaining areas for policy interventions that can strengthen smallholders’ agricultural performance for them to continue their role as backbone of rural economies and key vehicle for more rapid poverty reduction. “Smallholders are not a homogeneous group. These smallholder farmers need a policy environment that would support and nurture this transformation and help them overcome the challenges they face,” said Balisacan. B a lis acan s aid t hat small farms are the major sources of raw materials for agribusiness and manufacturing industries and that agricultural commodities geared for exports are good sources of foreign exchange earnings to finance capital accumulation needed for industrialization. “As the economy goes through an industrialization process, agricultural workers, especially during off-planting and harvesting seasons, are often employed in other sectors as contractual or

part-time workers. And as agriculture modernizes and links with the industry and services sectors to increase value adding in agricultural production, more remunerative jobs are created. The range of products and services becomes wider, and markets expand,” Balisacan explained. Balisacan recommended policy levers to further develop the initial conditions that would facilitate propoor growth. “Interventions should be focused in improving farm productivity, especially in areas where topography is not conducive to agriculture. It is also very important to facilitate the linkage of smallholders to supply chains and markets and overcome the threat of climate change,” he said. Balisacan also cited that agricultural investments in adaptation to help farmers improve land management, adjust their planting dates, and introduce new crop varieties are increasingly becoming important. “The increasing complexity and diversity of the environment in which smallholders now exist would not warrant a single policy, but rather a mix See neda, page B3

She said that an exporter must be registered in the Client Profile Registration System (CPRS) because export declaration is filled up online. However, for first time exporters, they need to go to Philexport in their regions. Accreditation of exporters has requirements particularly export performance, audited Financial Statements (FS) from last year and bank certification to verify that the exporter has had inward remittances. After having CPRS approved, exporter may now go to shipping/airline office to get schedules of shipping. Fill up export declaration online and get government commodity clearance. Some products are regulated or prohibited, usually handicrafts don’t need regulation but furniture might need certification from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Cortez said. The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will then handle these goods to load via pier or airport. Since the government is promoting export activities in the country, BOC do not require taxes for export commodities only fees. Through Export Development Act (RA 7844), Export Assistance Network (EXPONET) of EMB facilitates accreditation of exports and processing of Travel Tax Exemption for exporters. 2 OFW families from Normin receive awards T

he families of two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Northern Mindanao were honored by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) last Monday to vie for the national Model OFW Family of the Year Awards (MOFYA) to be held on December 4 in Manila. The families of Wilfredo Ancajas (land-based) of Lugait, Misamis Oriental and Capt. Calvert Ramos (sea-based) of Linamon, Lanao del Norte received their respective plaques and cash from OWWA Administrator Rebecca Calzado. The two families were chosen for the solidarity in their family, prudent lifestyle, and moral and financial impact to the community and society. Ancajas was born in 1953 in Tubod, Lanao del Norte. He married Bernardita Damasing. The couple has four children, all professionals. Ancajas worked for 20 years as foreman piper in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in four different companies. Last June, he decided to forego his overseas job and be with his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Ancajas have four children and is proud of their achievements both in school and in their individual

profession. Wilbert graduated BS Mechanical Engineering in St. Peter’s College of Iligan and presently employed in a construction company based in Manila for six years now. Wilfredo Jr. finished BS Industrial Automation and Mechatronics at MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology. He followed his father’s footsteps and became an OFW. He previously worked in Saudi Arabia for four years as an instrument technician and is now presently employed in New Caledonia, a French territory in the Pacific, as a commissioning technician. Michael Feliciano is a graduate of an Electrical Machinery course at MSU-IIT. He works as cabling technician in Qatar and presently processing the renewal of his overseas employment contract. Joana Lou graduated cum laude BS Chemistry at MSU-IIT under full academic scholarship and is now a licensed chemist. She is a quality analyst at Nestle Company factory in Cagayan de Oro City. Mrs. Ancajas is an officer of the Handmaids of the Lord where she actively participates in every community and church activities of the group. She serves as catechist and seminar facilitator

for couples in the Family Life Ministry of the parish. Meanwhile, Ramos’s career as a seaman overseas spans 16 years. He is presently on board as a master mariner under the principal with Britoil Offshore Services Pte. Ltd. He is married to Ida Aranas, a certified public accountant. Mrs. Ramos decided to give up her work at the National Steel Corporation to devote her time in rearing and caring the children. The couple is blessed with four children, three boys and four girls, all of them are now professionals. John Daniel, the eldest and firstborn twin, is a licensed physician for internal medicine and currently pursuing further training in adult cardiology in Philippine General Hospital (PGH). He finished his degree in Medicine at the University of the Philippines – Diliman. At present, he is happily married to a pediatrician. He plans to practice in Iligan City once he finishes his training in adult cardiology. Jay Davi Ramos, the secondborn twin, is an accomplished comic book artist for Walt Disney, Marvel Comics, Time Warner, DC Comics, Dreamworks to

name a few. He graduated cum laude in UP Diliman, taking up Fine Arts in Visual Communication. He was once nominated for an Eisner Award and featured prominently in Animax. Jason Dana Ramos, third child, is married and a father of four kids. Presently, he is connected with Convergys Makati. He was once an indie composer and songwriter with an unreleased debut album that consists of 15 original songs with his cousins as bandmates. Maria Mikhaila Ramos, the youngest and oly daughter, is enrolled at PETA for Creative Musical Theater Workshop to fulfill her aspiration to become a musical stage actress. She finished her degree in Broadcast Journalism from St. Paul Univeristy in Quezon City in 2011. Mrs. Ramos helped in founding the organization of seafarers’ wives in Iligan City, the Apostleship of the Sea and its precursor, the Star of the Sea – Iligan, which provides various socio-psychological activities intended for the wives of seafarers. Capt. Ramos is now an incorporator of a manpower recruitmen agency.

10 Corn Congress to gather corn farmers, stakeholders th

hilippine National Corn Congress happening on November 17-21, 2014 here in Cagayan de Oro City is expected to bring together farmers, agriculture officials, local government units, private sectors and other corn industry stakeholders in the country. Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary and National Corn Program Coordinator Edilberto M. de Luna said in a held press conference that PNCC, in its 10th leg this year, is aimed to showcase not only latest technologies and best farm practices but also to serve as an avenue for discussion of current issues and share knowledge and views among stakeholders. Further, the congress will forge market linkages and generate policies to be pushed through for the development of corn industry in the Philippines.

Exhibits on agricultural products are also being displayed in the area.

Philippine Maize Federation Inc., partnering Department of Agriculture, set the congress as grounding for 2015’s integration of ASEAN community, having the theme, “Corn Farming in the ASEAN Integration: Maximizing Opportunities.” The corn congress is to prepare farmers for the ASEAN Economic Integration kicking off next year. This could be done through the partnership among agriculture department, private entities and farmer groups coming from different delegations not only in Mindanao but also in Visayas and Luzon islands. During the gathering, Corn Quality achievers Awards will be given to outstanding local government units or provinces that performed best in ensuring the quality and sustainability of the corn in their places. The event also targets further push de-

velopment in corn. Asec. de Luna disclosed that Philippines is already sufficient by 90% when feed stock is concern. This year, his department is targeting 100% sufficiency level. He also said that such achievements and targets could not be hit without the help of new technologies. Thus, de Luna expressed that embracing modern practices is good because the development encouraged through Science’ wide array of technology cannot be prevented. The corn congress will also involve individuals

coming from the academe especially those into agriculture. DA-10 Regional Director Lealyn A. Ramos said that the congress will help motivate students to appreciate agriculture and make them take up agriculture courses. She said that because a lot of courses that involves modern technology are being offered, the rate of students under Agriculture each year is decreasing. She explained that being into Agriculture is not just simply planting and harvesting, it is also a field that involves Science. Thus, studies and researches are needed to be done to further improve the quality of farming and other areas. Further, students should take up Agriculture also. Philippine Maize Federation Inc. President Roger V. Navarro agreed to this. He cited that 1.8 million Filipinos depend their livelihood on corn and another 11 million of those directly employed in corn plantation. Thus, Corn, and Agriculture as a whole, should be given importance to because it

feed a number of individuals. Prior to the corn congress happening almost a month from press time, demonstration and field tour on Corn Technology are also conducted along with Farmer’s Field Day held October 20, 2014 at Manresa Farm, this city. The field demonstration is a five-day information drive on Corn Technology. More or less 400 individuals participated on the opening day of field demo, that includes farmers coming from Cagayan de Oro, Opol in Misamis Oriental, and Sumilao and Impasug-ong towns of Bukidnon. Agricultural Training Institute scholars, students, instructors and seed companies also converged in the event. Moreover, participants toured the corn plantation. They are given ideas about different kind of corns and important points in growing such crops. Further, various agricultural products and technologies are exhibited in the event.
