DAVAO City––Progressive groups here fasted for 12 hours on Wednesday in support of 35 political prisoners in Southern Mindanao accused of “trumped-up charges” during the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners.

“There were also 14 NDFP (National Democratic Front of the Philippines) consultants who have been jailed despite the ‘immunity’ supposedly granted to peace consultants of NDFP through the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Grant (JASIG), one of the agreements, which was signed by the government during the previous peace talks,” Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Southern Mindanao secretary general Sheena Duazo said.

Bayan was joined by members of Samahan ng mga Ex-Detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto and other militant groups at the city’s Freedom Park in Roxas Avenue.

The activity was part of the 10-day “people’s camp” for human rights and peace.

Duazo urged the Aquino government to address the root cause of the armed conflict in the country and release all political prisoners and peace consultants of NDFP immediately.

BBL triggered resurgence of moves for federal gov’t, says advocate

AVAO City - Some provisions in the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law have fueled moves to push for federalism in the country, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said.

Speaking during the Mindanao Leader Summit, Duterte said that with the “privileges” given to the Bangsamoro, it was also time for the rest of the country to ask what is due them through a shift to a federal form of government.

One of the provisions he cited is the wealth sharing arrangement between the Bangsamoro and the national government.

Duterte said a federal form of government would help address the unrest in Mindanao, which he blamed on inequitable sharing of wealth and resources.

“Ang mga hinanakit lang naman ng mga taga-Mindanao ay makukuha nila kung ano dapat sa kanila,” (The cudgel of the people of Mindanao is simply to get what they deserve) he said.

Reuben Canoy, an oldtime advocate of federalism, said that the pending BBL would allow the Bangsamoro government to get 75% of all its revenues.

“If approved, the revenue-sharing arrangement would be clearly unjust to other regions and makes it all the more imperative to federalize the government so that all regions—whether Lumad, Christian or Muslim, whether Tagalog, Ilocano or Visayan—will be on equal footing as Filipinos.”

Former North Cotabato governor Emmanuel Pinol, one of the summit organizers, cited the case of Palawan, which “has to go to court for its share of the Malampaya natural gas.”

“But with the mere stroke of a pen, hundreds of millions go to big name politicians close to the powers that be,” Pinol said.

“The whole idea is for the [Bangsamoro people] to catch up on development,” Ferrer said during the forum “Piecing a Consensus for Peace: Comparative Perspectives on the Proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL” in Quezon City on November 27.

Federalism advocates gathered in the city on Monday for the First Mindanao Leaders Federalism Summit, which was attended by at least 300 people coming from different parts of the country.

Many of them were incumbent local government officials, former politicians, retired ranking military and police officials, representatives from civil society organizations and religious groups.

Duterte, on the other hand, said he was hoping the BBL could hurdle questions on its constitutionality which may be filed before the Supreme Court once it is approved by Congress and signed into law by the President.

If the BBL fails, he said, it will be a failed dream for everybody, adding it could lead to further conflict in Mindanao.

During the House public hearing on the BBL in Iligan City last Friday, Muntinlupa Rep. Rodolfo Biazon warned that rejecting the BBL could mean “more death and destruction” in

Mindanao.

Duterte said the proposed Bangsamoro already serves as a catalyst for federalism in the country. “ Binigay na kasi nila sa Bangsamoro. Hihingiin din yan ng Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), ng mga Ilocano, ng mga Bikolano, at iba pa.” (They have given it to the Bangsamoro. The CAR, Ilocanos, Bicolanos and others will also ask for it.)

He further disclosed that he already had the support of the leaders of the Nur Misuari and Muslimin Sema factions of the Moro National Liberation Front.

Not for presidency During the summit, Duterte dismissed rumors that the resurgence of the federalist movement in the country was a prelude to his rumored bid for the presidency.

Several groups have been urging the mayor to run for president in the 2016 elections.

“I belong to the other side, where we only advocate for this federalism without going into politics,” he said, adding he did not want his intentions to be misconstrued.

He assured that his campaign for federalism is a peaceful one and will not eventually lead to Mindanao independence.

“Mine is I’m trying to save Mindanao from being fractured,” he said allud-

CAGAYAN de Oro City-National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), citing report from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC, said Typhoon Ruby with international name “Hagupit” is expected to maintain its typhoon status until December 7 (Sunday).

The government agency for weather forecasting––the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical Service Administration (Pagasa)––said the JTWC monitored a Low Pressure Area (LPA) near the Chuuk Islands of the Federated States of Micronesia on November 30.

T he fol l ow i ng d ay, the weather disturbance strengthened into a tropical depression due to warm waters and good atmospheric conditions, reported the panahon.tv on its website.

Six hours later, it intensified into a tropical storm category capable of generating heavy rainfall, the report said. It was then named Hagupit, an international name contributed by the Philippines, which means “lash” or “flog.”

According to the report made by panahon.tv on its website, Pagasa listed at least 56 areas as critical, 23 of them are in Mindanao.

Hagupit, according to weather experts, has the possibility of becoming a super typhoon with strength similar to that of Typhoon Yolanda that battered parts of Visayas in 2013.

The center of Hagupit, as of 4 p.m. yesterday, was located based on all available data of Pagasa at 1,278 kilometers east of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur (8.5°N 137.9°E), with maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 30 kph.

According to state-run weather bureau, the Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao region will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Cagayan Valley will have cloudy skies with light rains.

The region of Cordillera, Ilocos,and Central Luzon will experience partly cloudy to a times cloudy skies with isoalated light rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast to East will prevail over Luzon and Eastern section of Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming

from the Northeast with slight to moderate seas.

Quick response funds The various departments of the National Government are prepared to respond to the possible entry of Typhoon Hagupit into the Philippines as they have appropriate budgetary support worth P4.69 billion, according to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

DBM Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad said, “The departments are equipped with Quick Response Funds (QRFs), standby funds that they can readily access when emergencies or disasters occur. They can use these funds to mobilize the necessary resources and manpower to extend relief and immediate assistance to victims.”

The following departments have QRFs to draw from in response to the coming typhoon: the Department of Agriculture; the Department of Education; the Department of Health; the Department of National Defense, including the Office of Civil Defense; the Department of Social Welfare and Development; and the Department of Transportation and Communications.

Because the QRFs are comprehensively released to the departments at the start of the year as part of the GAA-as-release document regime, the departments have the capability to perform emergency response functions without the need to fulfill required conditions and processes that may take time during a disaster.

The National Government can also draw from the 2014 National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (NDRRMF) to deal with the after-effects of Typhoon Hagupit if it hits the Philippines. Additional funds shall likewise be made available once the proposed 2015 National Budget is approved in Congress and signed by the President.

Abad said, “Given our country’s location along the typhoon-belt in the Pacific, the National Government

knows it must prepare for any calamity. But we cannot predict the future. That’s why it’s essential that our national budgets have special purpose funds (SPFs) like the QRFs and the NDRRMF to address any contingency.”

A lawmaker has called on the House Committee on Ways and Means to conduct an inquiry into the judicial setback of regulations issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Department of Finance (DOF) outside the authority given them by the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC), as amended, which may lead to capital flight and bear crippling effects on the economy.

Rep. Sharon S. Garin (Par ty-list , AAMBISOWA) sought the inquiry through House Resolution 1645, saying that since 2010, the Supreme Court has successively issued Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) on the BIR and DOF for their issuance of regulations in the implementation of tax laws.

The SC ruled such issuances have constitutional infirmities.

Taxation is inherently legislative in character.

As clearly interpreted by the SC, the rule-making power should be within the scope of the statutory

Editorial authority granted by the legislature to the BIR. The BIR may not make rules and regulations which are inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution or a statute, particularly the statute it is administering or which created it, or which are in derogation of, or defeat the purpose of a statute.

Instead of effectively implementing the tax laws, the BIR through such issuances has been causing chilling effect on taxpayers, stockholders and investors, which could cripple the economy and trigger capital flight.

The rule-making power of the BIR Commissioner, who has recommendatory power to the DOF Secretary, emanates from Section 244 of the NIRC, as amended.

“Such power is for the promulgation of needful rules and regulations for the effective implementation of the NIRC provisions,” said Garin, a

Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Ways and Means.

But since 2010, the SC issued TRO on several regulations issued by the BIR and DOF because of constitutional infirmities. One of these is Revenue Regulations (RR) No. 4-2014 dated March 3, 2014, prescribing for the guidelines and policies for the monitoring of service fees of professionals. The BIR was stopped from implementing this because such issuance was not within the scope of its rule-making power under Sec. 244 of the NIRC, as amended, according to Garin.

BIR’s RR No. 1-2014 dated December 17, 2013, mandating for the submission of alphabetical list of employees/payees, which was likewise impeded because of alleged violation of the policies of due process, the Tax Code, Securities Regulation Code and the Data Privacy Act. BIR’s Revenue Memorandum Circular (RMC) No. 65-2012 dated October

31, 2012, clarifying the taxability of association dues, membership fees and other assessments/ charges collected by condominium corporations suffered the same judicial setback issued by the Makati Regional Trial Court on ground that the BIR failed to conduct public hearings before the new tax imposition was promulgated.

The lawmaker said these same issues were raised in the issuance of RR No. 2-2014 and RMC No. 9-2014, prescribing for the new BIR forms which require supplemental information on individual and corporate income taxpayers.

The House did not hesitate to call for an inquiry of such issuances, and requested the BIR to stop the enforcement thereof on ground of violations of the right to privacy, Tax Code, Bank Secrecy Law, lack of proper publication and consultation, and administrative infeasibility thereof.

BIR and DOF should take heed.

Be prepared: Listen to authoritative sources The Japan Meteorological Agency has reported on Wednesday that Typhoon Ruby, code named: “Hagupit,” is moving to the Philippines at a speed of more than 200 kilometers per hour. The agency described “Hagupit” as very strong.

The tropical cyclone “Hagupit” is expected to enter the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday. Incidentally, “Hagupit” appears to be a Tagalog word, which means “to lash,” “to whip,” or “hit with a belt.” Whipping or lashing has a smashing impact that the cyclone “Hagupit” could be that much.

The country’s weather bureau described Ruby as almost closer to Yolanda’s strength and destructive power that the local government units in the affected areas have been advised

to take all precautionary measures this early.

In the province, the PDRRMC calls the shots at times of emergency, which should always be the case.

In Cagayan De Oro City, the CRRMC appeared to be under the beck and call of the City Engineers when it should be the CRRMC that would issue all directives during emergencies. Isn’t it true that most, if not all, members of the CRRMC are Consultants.

Anyway, we don’t want to share an unsolicited advice to the city government on matters of preparation in times of emergencies.

After all, City Councilor

Candy Darimbang once said that the consultants at the City Hall are “useless” other than serving as the “stool” of the City Mayor.

Thus, we could not also blame Mr. Lago. Perhaps, the guy does not simply wants to be in loggerhead with his “consultant bosses” at the City Hall.

Well, with or without the advisories from the city government, it is incumbent upon the residents and everyone else to be prepared all the time. There are other means of monitoring the real situation in times of emergencies like the local radio stations, which plug every now and then the latest advisories from authoritative sources. Let us also rely on other authorized government agencies who monitor actual and real time conditions in times emergencies.

Remember, most politicians and their minions are unreliable because they almost always capitalize the situation to deodorize their rotten images in the pursuit of their political ambition.

BUTUAN City––Agusan del Norte First District Rep. Lawrence Lemuel Fortun said he hoped the newly-completed P2-million mini-market in Barangay Lingayao and P3.4million road in Barangay Pinanaan would redound to the economic development of the municipality of Las Nieves.

Fortun made the remarks during the December 5, 2014 inauguration of the infrastructure projects which the Department of Public Works-Agusan del Norte District Engineering Office implemented.

Las Nieves is Agusan del Norte’s remotest town which Fortun described “has potentials for economic advancement owing to its rich natural resources if its need for infrastructure projects are addressed.” The solon pointed out that government intervention in the form of infrastructure are needed to spur economic activities in Las Nieves to create better opportunities for its people.

Fortun assured that more projects for the municipality and his district will be completed within this fiscal year.

Earlier, the young solon opened to the public several completed projects including the Lumbocan seawall, Barangay Imadejas road, Port Poyohon multi-purpose building, and the Social Welfare and Development multi-purpose building here.

Agnor PDRRMC prepares for Typhoon ‘Hagupit’ BUTUAN City––The province of Agusan del Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) chaired by governor Ma. Angelica Rosedell M. Amante-Matba is now ready for the possible entry of Typhoon ‘Hagupit (International Name) to the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), says PDRRM Office chief.

According to PDRR-

MO officer Erma Suyo, PDRRMC chair Matba has issued an Executive Order No. 39 Tuesday activating the PDRRMC and the Incident Command System (ICS) Incident Management Team of the province effective immediately.

Public Consultation for Cassava practitioners, stakeholdersheld “We need to disagree to be able to agree to a standard that we aim.

For us to be globally competitive in the sector of cassava in preparation for the ASEAN Integration in 2015”, said Chedy V. Ansale, Interim-Chief of Marketing AssistanceDivision (MAD) of the Department ofAgriculture Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10) in a Public Consultation on the Philippine National Standard on Code of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Cassava and Code of Practice for the Reduction of Hydrocyanic Acid (HCN) in Cassava and Cassava products in Region X held in the city.

According to Dr. Antonio G.Gerundio, National Focal Person andTWG member of the Cassava Program, the GAP addresses the essential principles of food safety applicable to primary production through primary processing of cassava to chips. He added that it encompasses Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) that will help minimize microbiological, chemical and physical hazards associated with all stages of production.

On the other hand, the Code of Practice for the Reduction of HCN, a highly volatile, colourless, and extremely poisonous liquid that can be present in Cassava and Cassava products seeks to reduce the HCN content in Cassava products as it can be toxic to humans and animals. Thus, there is a need to provide national and local authorities, manufacturers and other relevant bodies with guidance on how to produce cassava with safe concentrations of residual cyanogenic

compounds, Dr. Gerundio further said.

“Region 10, as one of the major hubs of c ass av a pro du c t i on and trade, it is but essential to include the stakeholders in the said region to partake in the public consultation of the draft of codes on cassava production so as to ensure accuracy of st and ards draf ted” said Dr. Rodel G. Maghirang,university professor of the University of the Philippines Los Banos.

Cassava, locally known as balinghoy, balanghoy or kamotengkahoy is mainly used as a food or feed ingredient.

It contributes P18.74 Billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2013.

Further, according to Dr. Gerundio, 75.8 M Filipinos depend on it as a food, more than 200,000 farmers depend on Cassava farming and it generated over 48,000 jobs in the Calendar Year (CY) 2013.

Spearheaded by the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) in coordination with MAD-10, the said consultation was participated by the local government units (LGUs), cassava stakeholders, experts/practitioners, consumer organizations, and academe, technical and regulatory personnel of DA-RFO 10. ference, urged for the immediate shift to a federal form of government as the current government is “incompetent” and “morally bankrupt.”

He called the summit timely and said somebody should lead and actively push for the movement for federalism.

“If changing the present constitution for federalism is morally important, relevant and urgent, who would call for a national convention and supervise it freely and democratically? Is it the present government, which has been accused of rampant corruption and declared morally bankrupt?”

Capalla also asked whether people were also

obligated to “peacefully demand and compel” present officials to relinquish their power given that the unitary form has been “abused and misused.”

“If peaceful departure of high officials of the present government is not carried out in soonest possible time, does this non-action by the people not appear approving of scandalous wrongdoing?”

He also demanded that government officials appear before those who were “visibly suffering, dying as unnecessary victims of poverty.”

The archbishop said support for a federal form of government would assure the “adequate and humane

promotion of the common good ...these are the two moral objectives according to the teachings of the second Vatican Council.”

He said that the formation of a federal government should also abide by the moral values of self-nourishment, self-sustenance, and self-governance.

But Capalla admitted he did not know the specifics of shifting to federalism. “All I know from common sense is that a national objective is easily and effectively seen when the federated regions continue separately and independently in the process.

Capalla clarified he was expressing a personal opinion and his view did not reflect the stand of either the

Catholic church or the BUC. Con-Con Randolph Parcasio, who sat in the MNLF peace panel called on Congress to call for a constitutional convention.

Parcasio called the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) a “failed experiment,” with the national government failing to implement the 1996 Final Peace Agreement.

A councilor representing the indigenous peoples in Davao City said the sector he represents is also advocating for federalism.

Councilor Berino Mambo-o, an Ata from Paquibato district who represents the indigenous peoples in the city council, urged Duterte

to lead the federalist movement.

“The indigenous peoples dream of federalism, too,” Mamboo said, adding it would benefit them if governance was more localized, even if there was already assistance coming from government and nongovernment organizations.

He said health and other social services were lacking in the city’s far-flung areas like Paquibato and Marilog.

anti-biotic medicines did not work on him. When he tested positive he thought it was the end of the world. For months, he stayed home reflecting on his situation until he learned of a support group that has helped him from then on.

His family eventually understood his condition and has expressed support for him to live a normal life.

“There is hope for people like us,” said “Bobby”, one of 269 cases of HIV infection in the region reported from 1984 to August 2014. He cited that among the problems people like him encounter is possible stigma and discrimination due to lack of education.

This is despite Republic Act 8504, the law that seeks to ensure protection of people living with HIV. The law mandates that government programs and policies must make eliminating stigma and discrimination central to ensuring that all people feel safe in accessing HIV and AIDS testing and treatment services.

“Bobby” lamented that rumors especially those rooted in misinformation on people with HIV/AIDS do not help. Education, he added, helps address ignorance citing the reaction of his mother, a nurse practicing in the United States. He said there is better public understanding of HIV/ AIDS in the US so people living with the condition are not discriminated.

Organizers of the local commemoration explained that the theme “Getting to zero” means they are

aiming for Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination, and Zero AIDS Related Deaths.

Dr. Melrose Deticio, of the Malaybalay City Health office asked for the participation of different sectors in educating the public as the health sector alone cannot do it.

“There is a need for alliance work, for other sectors to collaborate.

Let’s treat government organizations, nongovernment organizations, and individuals as partners,” said Michael Jesus A. Mahinay, project officer and HIV Counseling and Testing Trainor of Alagad-Mindanao Inc. “Bobby” still spoke with traces of sadness in his face. Several times, he would pause as tears rolled down his cheeks. He cited that he had thoughts of being cursed. He admitted though that he lived an active sex life as a bisexual many years before learning about his condition.

He said his sex life started at the peak of his curiosity. He drank just anywhere, and he could no longer identify who infected him. He said that during those times he did not think of the consequences.

But “Bobby” quickly regained his composure. He said his condition helped bring him back to God and see meaning in life. He attributed his source of strength to God and the encouragement of groups like Alagad-Mindanao.

Now an advocate of education on HIV/AIDS with Alagad-Mindanao, “Bobby” said there is a need to help prevent the spread of the disease and help support people like him.

Mahinay said that of the 269 cases in Northern Mindanao, AlagadMindanao is handling a total of 70 cases.

“Bobby” is one of the 26 patients in Cagayan de Oro who is receiving free anti-retroviral drugs. As of November 2014, a total of 15 patients they handled had died.

Only five of the 70 patients they handled are female. In the region, 245 of the 269 patients are male.

Of the 269 cases, 125 are homosexuals and 84 are bisexuals.

Only a little above 20 percent are heterosexuals.

Most of the 269 cases (159) are in Misamis Oriental. The rest are in Lanao del Norte (38), Bukidnon (30), Misamis Occidental (20), and Camiguin (5).

Mahinay cited that a number of the cases have sought treatment and attention outside the region.

Of the 269 cases, 149 belong to the 25-34 age group, where “Bobby” belongs.

In the Philippines, AlagadMindanao said, there are a total of 20,989 reported HIV positive cases and 318 deaths so far. About 90 percent or 18,948 of the cases were males and only 2,030 cases were females.

According to the UNAIDS 2013 Report, worldwide there are 35.3 million adults and children estimated to be living with HIV and AIDS. Around 2.5 million of the cases are children below 15 years old.

Around 28 million people already died and around 7,000 people get infected every day.

“About 95 percent of those living with HIV come from developing and poor countries (like the Philippines),” Mahinay said.

Alagad-Mindanao said the HIV is the virus that causes AIDS by attacking and destroying the body’s immune system.

There is no known cure for HIV or a vaccine that can prevent it.

The disease shows no signs and symptoms at the early stage.

AIDS on the other hand is the end stage of HIV infection where symptoms of diseases, infections and malignancies occur.

HIV can be transmitted through body fluids like blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.

The group said the modes of HIV transmission include unprotected sex and having multiple sex partners.

It can also be contracted through blood transfusion, organ transplant, and sharing of syringes. A mother can also infect her child during pregnancy and delivery.

Mahinay said among the methods to prevent infection is abstention from sex, mutual monogamy, and careful sex through correct and consistent use of condom and non-penetrative sex.

For mothers, they can avoid transmission by either avoiding pregnancy or consulting a doctor if pregnant for proper intervention and monitoring.

Mahinay added that Ceasarian section delivery can prevent transmission. Once the baby is born, the mother should also avoid breastfeeding.

Earlier this year Greenhills Park officially became part of Eternal Gardens, a leader in local memorial park development, which currently has nine other parks located in different parts of Luzon. Greenhills Park, as the 10th in the Eternal Gardens chain, is the first outside Luzon.

Known for its promotion of religious art, Eternal Gardens has made it a company tradition to adorn its parks with plazas dedicated to saints and holy men and women. The plaza of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception at Greenhills Park pays tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of Barangay Bulua.

The plaza features a beautiful image of the Virgin Mary rendered in concrete by notable artist Conrado F. Balubayan.

This will be the second religious image to be inaugurated at Greenhills Park. The first

was the towering statue of the Transfiguration of Christ, another work of Balubayan, which was unveiled last October 25, 2014. Known as Eternal Gardens' symbol of excellence and a popular landmark in the cities where its branches can be found, the Transfiguration of Christ is originally designed by National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva, who executed three of the now 10 renditions of the iconic image.

The blessing of the Immaculate Conception Plaza, which will take place two days before the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, marks another milestone for the company and for the people of Cagayan de Oro City. It also affirms the commitment of Eternal Gardens, through Greenhils Park, to provide the Kagay-anons with only the best memorial care products and services.

“It is time for us to succeed another level of awareness on Halal. Awareness that may lead us to better respond and put our acts together to take bolder steps in creating a momentum by harnessing science and technology for the advancement of Lanao to take part in the global Halal economy and in preparation for the ASEAN Economic Integration in 2015,” Hadji Raof Laidan said.

The world has welcomed the Halal economy, a radical opportunity many non-Islamic nations as far as United Kingdom and the rest of Europe has incessantly endeavor to gain advantage of.

We in Lanao can neither simply close our door nor can we afford to neglect this same opportunity at our own threshold. Lanao has great advantage to tap into the global Halal economy.

It is known to be the only place in the country solidly populated by Muslim Filipinos with rich cultural heritage, natural resources, and human

resources with unique entrepreneurial skills and core competences.

This Royal Forum is envisioned to inspire and motivate the people of Lanao particularly the Maranaos to foster Halal Science culture to enable them to become producers, manufacturers, suppliers and exporters of world-class products of Halal Premium Brands globally competitive in the world halal market.

Rechanneling youthful hormonal screams

WHEN humans reach puberty, two distinct hormones are released, depending if you’re a male or a female. Males release testosterone while females release estrogen. Initially, these hormones make you feel queasy and awkward but as the longer you go through adolescence, you will feel more excited, hyperactive and stimulated all at the same time. You may feel confused or have strong emotions that you’ve not experienced before. If you do not know how to contain or channel all these excitements into positive vibes, chances are you’d go into a darker path – a path of drug addiction and

misplaced sexual awakenings. Drug addiction begets mayhem and murder, early sexual intercourse begets teenage pregnancy and AIDS. That’s why parents are there to guide their teens during this vulnerable stage. (On this note, I’d like to say kudos to the City Council for initiating an ordinance to penalize parents for the delinquencies of their kids.) If the high school teenagers find it awkward to talk about sexual things to their parents, then there are peer and guidance counselors in their schools. Parents must also encourage their kids to join peer groups at

K-pop in CDO goes mainstream

hen Liceo de Cagayan University HRM student Mary Jocel Quimno discovered that there’s no organized society in CDO of K-pop lovers like her, she presented a solution. She organized one. It was when KHIBI or the Korean Hearts Inside Beautiful Individuals was born in 2012.

Their initial goal was to gather all K-pop fans and K-pop cover groups in Cagayan de Oro in high schools, colleges and even out-of-school youth. They then organize concerts and shows, espousing K-pop culture and of course, K-pop fashion too. Pretty soon, the 1st Khibi Music Awards was held.

“We are a group of friends who share the same love and interest to Kpop who really wished to bring what Manila is organizing annually--- the Kpop Con-

vention and Kpop Nation.

Since we are too far to experience the fun that they are enjoying, we decided to join forces and bring the event very similar to the

event that they are doing there,” Quimno said.

Now on its fourth year, the Khibi Music Awards has happened eight times already or an average of one such event per quarter.

Quimno is proud to say this is the biggest and the only K-pop event of such magnitude held in Mindanao. The last one was held in November, the next one will occur in January 2015.

Panasonic ‘eco learning’ held to advance environmental education 28 November 2014, Manila, Philippines - A month after the company mobilized its employees to plant trees in Tanay, Rizal, Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation (PMPC) resumed conducting its series of Eco Learning (environmental education) Program or ELP on Friday, November 28 with one of its elementary school partners.

Led by PMPC president Nobuo Yasuhira, the company’s management and staff provided environmental lessons and inspirations to the students and teachers of Don Jose Elementary School in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“Since the establishment of Panasonic in 1918, we have been carrying out all our activities along with our management philosophy with the basic concept of ‘company as a public entity of society’. Thus, our commitment to help create a sustainable society through environmen-

tal activities such as our ‘eco learning’ program is also an expression of the purpose of our company’s existence. The company’s brand slogan “A Better Life, A Better World” also encapsulates the same vision of pursuing a better life for each individual customer, and realizing a better world globally through its

contribution to the environment and other activities,” Yasuhira said in his message during the event.

ELP is part of the various children-oriented programs called Panasonic Kid’s School.

It is an environmental education program for children around the world with Panasonic employees as teachers

to provide lessons through a variety of local activities, such as factory tours, lessons at schools, and at Panasonic showrooms. By providing an environmental education program to foster interest in global warming and biodiversity, the children are encouraged to take specific actions to protect the global
