DOH adopts ASTM Medical Center Your Mindanao-wide Community Newspaper

ANDAG CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) has entered into agreement with the provincial government of Surigao del Sur, the Montero Medical Missions and 10 other public and private corporate groups, embracing the Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center into the “Adopt-aHospital Program (AHP).

DOH Secretary Erique T. Ona, who physically came for the occasion, explained that the AHP goes in line with DOH Administrative Order 2012-0030, the guideline on Foreign Surgical and Medical Mission FSMM) program.

The program supports the Universal Health Care/ Kalusugan Pangkalahatan and the public- private partnership (PPP) strategy of the Department towards better delivery, efficient and quality health service to the public.

Secretary Ona said FSMM sets a series of activities where medical intervention and surgical services are provided to select underserved areas and communities by a foreign individual or organization, in partnership with the local government unit, non-government organization, hospital or medical society.

“FSMM can either be a one-time conduct of medical mission or adopt a hospital program” he said. (GGC/asf)

Students to launch anti-teen pregnancy drive

BUTUAN CITY - Students from various colleges and universities in Caraga Region are converging in one of the schools here on August 1 to map out priorities, in support of government initiatives against teen pregnancy and other youth issues and concerns.

Initiated by the Commission on Population (POPCOM-Caraga), in collaboration with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED-Caraga) and the Caraga Youth Leaders Network (CYLN), seeks to mainstream Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD) program into the affairs of the student councils.

This is a follow-up activity to the commitment made by student leaders during the recent Student Leaders Congress here.

PopCom-Caraga will assist the student leaders in launching such projects and activities against teen pregnancy.

A regional training on Events Organizing and Leadership Program shall be conducted on August 10-11.

BUTUAN CITY – Agusan del Norte First District Rep. Lawrence Lemuel Fortun has expressed full support for President Aquino’s drive of getting more aggressive in going after grafters in government.

Fortun made the statement in a radio interview after the President delivered his State of the Nation Address saying the chief executive was “moving in the right direction” by employing aggressive measures against corrupt people in government as he had lost his patience in urging them to change their ways.

“This was a very strong statement coming from the President, that he will pursue his drive against corruption and abuse of power in the government. I believe that more effort should be taken in this campaign that will involve all of us,” he said.

As the government is deep in looking into reports that the P10- billion PDAF funds went to fake non-government organizations, Fortun is set to file his proposed bill seeking the solons’ pork barrel allocations disbursed for school buildings and other local projects directed at the people’s well being.

The new solon expects strong opposition to his proposal vowing to defend it “to my utmost best for the sake of the bill’s intent and purposes.” He hopes that “At the end of the day, good sense and enlightened minds will prevail.” ( with report by Eldie David)

Cebu Pacific launches bigger Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge for university students

Bigger prizes and more exciting adventures await young explorers in the Cebu Pacific Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge, now on its second year. Once again, the Philippines’ leading low-cost carrier will bring daring students with an insatiable thirst for adventure and a knack for budget travel on the ultimate all-expenses paid backpacking trip around the country.

Cebu Pacific representatives will tour different colleges and universities all over the Philippines this July in search of fun-loving students who want to join the Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge. The contest is open to college and university students who are 17 to 23 years old and residing in the Philippines.

To join, interested participants must form a team with three members and upload a short video to www. juanforfun.com. The audition video should answer the question “Why

should we send your team to a fun adventure?” Deadline of application is July 29, 2013.

The five teams with the best and most creative audition videos will be chosen to explore six of the best destinations in the country from August 27 to September 2. During the week-long backpacking challenge, the teams will be tasked to have as many fun and adventurous experiences and discoveries within a given travel allowance. They should also complete the special fun challenges prepared by Cebu Pacific in each destination to earn extra points and win additional prizes.

At the end of the challenge, the team with the most number of experiences and the least amount of total expenses will win the competition, based on these criteria: Fun Activities (50%) and Budget Friendliness (50%). The team will win 12 round-trip tickets to any

short-haul international or domestic destination, plus a three-day, twonight Philippine tour package for three, courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Gamba Artsada features CdeO culture, arts in LKK

By Elaine O. Ratunil The City of Golden Friendship will host an art exhibition of the Artsada team of artists on July 22 to 28, 2013, at LimKetKai Mall, Lapasan, this city.

Gamba Artsada is intended to help promote Cagayan de Oro as a place of unique culture, heritage and visual arts, said Marigold Cherie RamosGarrido, Artsada artist.

She said it will display oeuvres of the Artsada artists, showcasing the city’s rich heritage and culture in recognition of the Kagay-anon cultural heritage, history, natural wonders, values and socio-cultural and economic aspirations.

The team members are composed of “tubong Cagay-anon” promising artists. Some of them won in the various regional and national art competitions.

The exhibit is also supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Visual Arts Committee, as part of their off-shoot activities in promoting local arts and also R Productions for promotions.

NCCA now accepting project proposals for 2014 DAVAO C I T Y — T h e Nat iona l C ommission for Culture and the Arts (NC CA) is calling on cultural and art groups, individual artists, nongovernment organizations, local government units and academic institutions to submit project proposals for the 2014 NCCA Grants program.

Deadline for submission is on August 30.

Marlene Ruth Sanchez, NCCA deputy director, said during the “Salabat at Sining” press conference at the Philippine Information Agency-11 Friday that proposals should be in line with the theme “Filipino

culture as the wellspring of national and global well-being.”

The theme is decided annually by the 19 committees of the NCCA based on the identified priority needs of the sector.

“Projects must establish culture as pillar of sustainable development, advance creativity and diversity of artistic expression, and promote a strong sense of nationhood and pride in being Filipino through culture and arts,” Sanchez said in calling for project proposals.

Grace Reytes, NCCA project development officer and cultural dis-

semination chief, said that they received at least 1,000 proposals last year but approved only about 450.

“The problem is some proposals are not geared towards the priority set by the committee,” she added.

tional office at Intramuros, Manila addressed to Marichu G. Tellano, chief of the NCCA’s policy, plan, formulation and program division.

Make corruption a capital offense CORRUPTION in the Philippines is so rampant it is happening nearly every moment of one’s life. It is taking place in so many government offices, in congress, in public work projects, nearly everywhere.

The country ranks high according to foreign observers and yet the government is just silent and not doing anything about it. Because of this catastrophe, the country is dwindling. We cannot lift a bit because our money is tied to the corrupt people.

So many of our government workers and executives are wealthy people.

They have mansions in exclusive villages and private areas.

They have properties nearly everywhere including in foreign lands and many of which not registered in their names.

They have flashy cars, resorts, vacation homes and a lot of them make frequent trips to cities in

The government is aware about it but is helpless to run after its cronies, its relatives and political supporters. We are just helpless in this regard the reason why corruption thrives freely, smoothly and constantly.

It is high time something is done. The general public should march forward and denounce this great monster in our society.

Our politicians should be thought of the effects of corruption in the general appearance of Philippine society.

We should express our indignation over the government’s inaction and exhaust all our efforts to bring justice to the country.

We must change our attitude and behavior and reform the ugly appearance of our country so foreigners will respect us better.

We must make corruption a capital offense and restore the death penalty.

Corrupt people must die either by hanging or before a firing squad.

Whatever way, they should be eliminated and get rid of the terrible effects of their stupidity.

The country must change its approach and appre-

ciation of criminality. We must destroy the network of corruption because our country has suffered so much.

Under its youth program, PopCom is helping adolescents and youth avoid risky sexual behavior (e.g.. Pre-Marital Sex, smoking, alcohol drinking, and drugs) to reduce incidence of teenage pregnancies,

early marriages, sexuality transmitted infections and other psycho-social concerns.

PopCom provides ageappropriate and valuesladen sexuality education for the youth through the formal educational sys-

tem and the various youth programs of partners and provide parent education on adolescent health and sexuality in partnership with the LGUs and stakeholders.

In the said Congress, Alexander A. Makinano, PopCom officer-in-charge,

urged members of the local media and religious groups to support the Commission in working proactively in addressing the issue on teen pregnancy in the region.

PopCom Acting Executive Director Rosalinda D. Marcelino in her press
