BALANGAY, the most wellknown historical figure unearthed in Butuan City, is a wooden boat excavated in 1979 in Northeastern Mindanao near the city at a depth of about two meters. The original boat is said to have measured about 15 meters long and three meters wide across the beam. The wood of the boat has been dated to 320 A.D. Also known as "The Butuan Boat", this discovery boasts the name of Butuan City. (Google Image)

RDC asks PNP to form tourist police force

UTUAN CITY – The Caraga Regional Development CouncilDevelopment Administration Committee (RDC-DAC) has requested the Philippine National Police (PNP) to fast-track the creation of tourism police force.

In its second quarter meeting last week, the committee chaired by Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr., expressed optimism that such a force will greatly boost the region’s tourism industry. During the occasion, Assistant Director Ma. Aurora Faye Cariño of the National Economic and

Development Authority (NEDA-Caraga) emphasized that since Caraga is given an important position in the country’s tourism map, it is but necessary to give tourists the assurance of peace and security. “This is one way of drawing more local and foreign TOURISt | page 11

RODRIGUEZLibertad, Butuan City - The killing of five persons on June 18, this year, by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur has gathered adverse comments from the public, all over Caraga Region. They condemned such a ‘barbaric act’, while describing the issues being raised by the rebels as no longer relevant, and “their actions are purely terroristic.” The shocking and horrible death of Angel Cosan, Danny Linonsag, Felipe Hadraque, Remy Polintan and Jun Tria in the hands of the NPA was the center of discussion during the press conference at the killings | page 11

Sen. Manny Villar was recently conferred the 2013 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award in the field of Real Estate Service by the Professional Regulation Commission for “revolutionizing the housing industry as the biggest homebuilder in Southeast Asia, having built more than 100,000 houses for the poor and middle class Filipino families” (rigth photo). Villar was accompanied by his wife, Senator-elect Cynthia Villar, during the Awards Night held at Manila Hotel’s Fiesta Pavilion in Manila.

BUTUAN CITY -- The Commission on Population will award on June 27 the Local Government Units (LGUs) for their contributions to the attainment of the thrust of the country’s population program. Nominees to the 2012 Best Program Implementer will be evaluated based on the LGU’s accomplishment, primarily on such components of the Philippine Population Management Program (PPMP), as Organizational - 20%, Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RP/FP)- 40%, Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD) – 30%, Population and Development (POPDEV) Integration AWARD | page 11 – 10 %.
