THE National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) is on blue alert status as Typhoon ‘Henry’ is still in the Philippine Area of Responsibility, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said on Monday. Under the blue alert status, half of the personnel of all regional and municipal disaster risk reduction management offices, regional civil defense offices, and other concerned government agencies in would-be affected areas should be at their posts to monitor the situation. The areas of concern for this alert are the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya and Batanes. Lacierda said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is continuously monitoring the situation and disseminating weather bulletins and flood advisories, while the Department of Social Works and Development’s (DSWD) Municipal Disaster Response teams and Social Welfare Assistance and Municipal Development teams are on alert to be readily available for duty. Plane disaster and number ‘7’

THE other night, I stayed up almost until dawn monitoring the new tragic airline disaster in strife-torn Ukraine involving, yet again, another Malaysian Airlines aircraft that claimed innocent lives. I felt sad for the so-called “collateral damage” of war. The agony of relatives and loved ones cannot be fathomed by us observers, although I was in the middle of that kind of human anguish and grief when I was crisis manager of another plane crash in Mindanao many years ago. As I went to sleep already almost dawn, something strange struck my mind as I suddenly jumped out of bed to check some data. I found an interesting common thread to those earlier disasters: the number “7”. Consider the following: 1) Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crashed after being reportedly shot down by a surface-to-air missile over Ukraine a few days ago. It was a Boeing 777 aircraft and flew its first inaugural flight on 17 July 1997. It was exactly 17 years to the day when it crashed last 17 July. Strange coincidence. 2) Still remember Malaysian Airlines MH307 which is up to now still missing and being searched ? It was also a Boeing 777 aircraft. By the way, Boeing 777 entered commercial service on 7 June 1995. 3) Many years ago, in 1998, it was Cebu Pacific Flight 387 that crashed in the outskirts of Cagayan de Oro City. I took charge

That was one of my unforgettables. 4) Then I remember a similar airline incident in September, 1983. Korean Airlines flight KAL 007 was shot down when it strayed into Russian territory. All passengers and crew died. It was a Boeing 747 aircraft. FACEBOOK POSTS --Mere coincidence, I am sure, but this sounds eerie. So I posted my initial take on No. 7 on my Facebook account. Gods! I got a flurry of interesting but spontaneous, off-the-cuff comments. An FB friend going by the name PHOTOVISIONEERS FOTOGRAPINOY simply said: “The ancients said that 7 is the number of God”. Another one, ROMAN RAMA GUERRERO ( from North Cotabato) posted: “Shouldn’t we alert Malaysian Airlines with these obser vations Sec Jess? It’s time to turn away from #7 as we did with the President whose favorite number was 7.” Another FB friend KUMAW MONTECLAR SEBALDA posted an internet-generated fact sheet about MH17 and Boe-

ing 777. An FB post from ELTON CERNA ( In Davao City) said: “Seven is God’s number. Take this: a) God created the world in six days and rests on the 7th; b) He commanded his people to labour for 6 days and to rest on the 7th; c) Noah’s ark during the biblical great flood floated for 6 days and rested on Mt. Ararat on the 7th; d) in Revelation, God warned of the 7 last plagues. In fact, there are many other biblical accounts that mention 7 as having close association with God.” A veteran journalist friend CHARLIE SENASE ( from Cotabato) had this to say: “Looks like seven connotes rest and believed to be the number closely associated with the Lord in biblical times. Why not? To rest in peace, indeed; and rest in peace is eternal”. A university official, RONNIE AMORADO (from Davao City) posted: “Sir Jess, isn’t it that #7 is somebody’s lucky number? He hated the unlucky #13 but got elected as the 13th haha. What say you sir?” Another post from NIMFA ESGUERRA ( a realtor in General Santos City) said: “Those coincidences

really sound eerie. And it somehow bothered me because 7, 8 and 13 are my considered lucky numbers. My sudden reaction was to take a look at my booked ticket if it has the number 7. I think you scare me. Pero okay na. Hirap nyan ha.” Shucks, my not-soserious take on No.7 is spinning to other things. Someone suggested that airline flights change 7 to 6 or 6.5. Then someone suggested we change the unfamously unlucky 13 to 7; that high rise buildings that skip floor No. 13 also skip No.7. But Blogger REX VINCENT LUMAPAS LARIDA asked: “And who said 13 is unlucky?? Hehehe...” Well, before this spins off to a more serious discourse, let’s leave it at that. But I would be glad to continue compiling some more coincidental info on the matter. I am sure there are more facts out there. Do let me know. In the meantime, since I take the plane almost every week, I’ll always be on the lookout for No.7 in the flight numbers, just like what my FB friend Nimfa said. You can’t blame me! But for the moment, being preoccupied with this is a good break. At least, for a change and for a brief, fleeting moment, we have temporarily forgotten DAP, PDAF, Napoles, and other bad vibes and the toxic air that we have all been swimming in and preoccupied with for sometime now.

A N F R A N C I S C O, Agusan del Sur - L awmakers of the neighbouring provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur have come up with a “win-win” solution to settle their long overdue political boundary disputes. In a joint session held recently, the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the two p r ov i n c e s r e a c h e d a consensus to fairly divide hundreds of hectares to the respective villages within the contested boundary lines along the national highway between the towns of San Francisco in Agusan del Sur and Barobo in Surigao del Sur. Based on their agreement, a total of 1,737 hectares of contested areas will be divided with 232 hectares in favour of Das-agan village and 505 hectares in favour of Alegria village in San Francisco town and the rest will be divided after this

CAGAYAN de Oro City– –A passenger, waiting for a ride died while five others, including a police officer and 2 security guards, suffered bullet and stabbed wounds in a stabbing rampage in a bus terminal in Cagayan De Oro City Sunday morning. Police identified the lone fatality as Elmer Berden, of Bukatol, Kinawayan, Arakan, North Cotabato. Berden died of bullet wounds in a government hospital past 12 noon Sunday. The wounded were Pol.

GPC manufactures food supplements based on the humble malunggay (moringa oleifera), spirulina, and other indigenous herbs. Among its fastest moving products are Moringa Superfood, MoringaPlus Superfood, and GoProtect. With the arrival of its machines, it has now ventured into the manufacture of beverages like Moringa Gold and Moringa Silver Coffee. Although it was only registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on January 2012, it has its beginnings as early as 2004 when it started as a distributor of other products. However, the transition from a micro scale momand-pop operation to small industry size operations was extremely trying and there were many times when the proponents were ready to throw in the towel on the ambitious automation project. GPC maintains its moringa farm in Baliwagan, Balingasag, Misamis Oriental while its production office is situated at B1 L13 SilverCreek Townhomes, inBarangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. “Previously, we had done all our manufacturing manually using simple machines like blenders, sealers and the like,” said Felomina P. Luceno, marketing manager. “DOST recommended not to source our machineries from outside the country because of the extreme difficulties in importing machineries,” said Mirasol A. Padillo, GPC administration and purchasing officer. “The machines had to be shipped from four origins in China (Ningbo, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Guangdong) and when they arrived in Cebu, we were aghast to find that we had to pay customs duties and brokerage fees that cost more than twice the total cost of all the machines!” Since there were no direct shipping routes from the four Chinese ports to Cagayan de Oro, all the equipment had to be routed to Cebu and trans-shipped to Cagayan de Oro, further padding freight costs. Despite all the additional costs, however, Paraguya said the total cost they incurred was

still cheaper by a third than if they had sourced their machines domestically. “But that wasn’t the end of our problems,” said Ma. Cristita V. Dagaraga, GPC business development officer. “When we unpacked the machines, we encountered technical difficulties in operating the machine!” They had to hire local engineers to make the equipment operational and the machines for the food supplements were finally operational by November, 2013 significantly increasing production fourfold from 120 bottles daily from the manual production to 540 with the machines. However, the coffee powder packing machine proved particularly vexing and the technical group of formulators was just about at the end of their rope when miraculously a local engineer finally managed to operate it successfully. “After a very trying period of adjustment, we are happy that we are now reaping the benefits of the new technology,” Paraguya said with obvious relief. “Not all enterprises which took the leap to automation in the region had been successful, which makes GPCs success all the sweeter.” He said he knows of at least two companies similar to theirs which had abandoned their expansion projects after one got bogged down in customs (where the machine remains to this day) and another which has not ever managed to operate its machines bought at great costs locally. Utilizing a multi-level marketing network, the company now has over 2,000 Authorized Business Centers, Mobile Business Centers and Individual Business Owners all over the country, mostly in Mindanao and the Visayas. DOST remains optimistic GPCs success will blaze a trail for other enterprising entrepreneurs in the region who can appreciate the opportunities opened by the integration of the ASEAN market next year. “Some 3,267 new jobs were created in Region X for 2013 as a result of our interventions,” he noted. “A total of 273 technological interventions were provided to 97 existing and 15 start-up firms in the region resulting in accumulated gross sales of PhP 222.7 million. Fifty eight enterprises and institutions in the identified

priority sectors benefitted from the program and other Grants-in-Aid programs last year.” DOST-X is also aggressively establishing additional support facilities and services in anticipation of the ASEAN integration such as the launching of its High Impact Technology Projects during the recent start of the 2014 Science and Technology Week: a Food Innovation Center, a Packaging and Labeling Center and Complementary Foods.
