Police vows to tightly secure Nilayagan Fest By Arjay S. Felicilda, Assistant Editor
M
ORE police personnel shall be fielded during the annual Nilayagan Festival, June 12-17, to prevent a repeat of previous sad experiences. This assurance was made by Police Sr. Insp. Joseph Ejercito P. Lambaco, head of the festival security force, in a meeting with the Provincial Tourism Council (PTC), Tuesday. As part of pre-festival operations, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has started thorough inspection of the Naliyagan Cultural Center where the festival is taking place. The PNP is the lead
agency on safety and security during the celebration backed by other law enforcement agencies, like the Armed Forces of the Philippines, among others. It was learned that the PTC has already finalized the program of activities, with measures to avoid the unwanted experiences in past Naliyagan Festivals. In a meeting with the PTC, Professor Theresa Baylon of the Philippine
Normal University recalled the account of an eyewitness relating to a group of spectators jeering and throwing plastic bottles after the cheer dance competition two years ago. “(It was) shame for us that the incident happened,” Prof. Baylon said. That incident, she added, gravely alarmed not only the members of the PTC, but everybody around. NILAYAGAN | page 11

DOH-Caraga Regional Director Ariel Valencia said that as reported by the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, dengue cases in Region
13 from January 1-June 1, 2013 had climbed to 1,150 or 135 percent higher than the 509 cases recorded for the same period last year. Valencia added that in response to the surge in dengue cases, they had to revitalize the “4 o’clock Habit: Stop, Look, Listen” adopted in 1996. The measure encourages people to stop at 4 o’clock, look for mosquito breeding sites, destroy them, and listen to barangay officials
